Historically speaking I think Bandai has been getting the balance right. Their Macross DX releases never have shelf warmers and we’re all  still gaga about them.

scarcity fuels desire. :(

i think scarcity on its own doesnt fuel desire as much as quality/price/branding does..

although for one of its kind releases, like the yf-30 or vf-31A, scarcity in that "product/mold/shape" certainly fuels desire :p

I think a lot of people here are forgetting that bandai is taking care of its primary market, which is Japan.   They're not conducting these new releases and preorders for the sake of the rest of the planet.  If they did, you could be sure that it would go much easier, smoother.  Any talk about the brand drying because of westerners not being able to buy their products isn't an issue, because they're not focusing on the world, they're focusing on japan...

Point isnt abt westerners or japan, but rather scalpers becoming a barrier to get the product out to consumers.
We havent got to the point where the scalpers have totally cornered the macross DX market (and i need to emphasize Macross DX chogokin as HMR's dont face scalping madness), but in the event they do, it might really pose a problem for bandai's Macross DX chogokin brand

I guess NY already saw how nin nin crept up in price and said, thats amateur hour, let me show you how its done and came up with 35k

I've had two experiences with NY--one bad (horrible packaging and damaged item) and one good.  Anyone have experience with Nin Nin?  The reviews are mixed from what I've Googled... I've seen some bad reviews out there, but more with PO cancellations rather than packaging/service.

I’m resorting to getting a friend in Japan to buy the Super packs from P Bandai for myself and a work colleague. Uuugh, still don’t have a PO for Focker yet. :(

Ask your friend to go to bic camera at akihabara on release day, they should have some in stock.

If the consumer can’t experience the product, they will be accustomed to forget abt it. Or live without it so to speak.

Bandai is clearly not having an issue selling every unit they make....in about 5min. They are headed in the opposite direction of "going out of business". One could argue that by making them scarce/hard to get they have increased the desirability.

Sure, some people will simply stop buying. Or buy less. But, they could make up for that and then some with people that get hooked into "the hunt".

You're looking at this from your perspective. There are other perspectives out there.

To you. Not everyone thinks like you do. No judgement, just pointing out that across the human spectrum there are a lot of differences in what motivates people.

-Roy never had them in the show. I'm not a "cannon slave" but I'm not interested adding non cannon stuff to my Roy display. I have plenty of cannon stuff to fill the shelves up.

-I'm not interested in them for a potential Hikaru TV Skull One. My Hikaru display is done for the most part. The only thing that could change is replacing the Arcadia GBP with a DX. And putting a "Roy" (with Hikaru's name on it) in the Hikaru display doesn't interest me at all.

-As far as red tipped missiles go. I have elevindy billion missile sets. I'd paint one if I felt I needed a red tip set.

So yay for me! No PO stress!:yahoo:

Oh yes, i certainly agree bandai isnt going out of biz. Definitely not because of macross.

Branding includes the impression of quality/price/exclusivity or joy in your mind when you receive the product. Its this branding i mean, that gets wasted/dies when the consumer doesnt get to receive the product as smoothly as possible.

Just like when one gets rude customer service during buying their favourite branded item. It will cloud your experience of the brand, when they use it after, even tho one might have a very good impression of the brand.

None taken, we are all fans here! :yahoo: My view is from bandai's branding effort in driving us to buy it.

Yes i agree there are lots of motivations amongst collectors! Like some just go for MISB collections!

Not me tho! ^_^ I like to swoosh em!

p.s. btw its canon not "cannon", unless of course you mean ....cannons!

Ok shall zip it....am not a grammer prof....  apologies :hi:

Yeah i paid the first round yesterday. Then they cancelled today.

But hopefully you get it. :good:

Am not gonna feel pressured to get one. Its a lottery to me now. :p

I've learned with FromJapan that if they let you submit a request for quote, they'll let the first payment round happen even if they can't actually place the order, so I don't get my hopes up. They don't check to see if they can place the order in advance of the payment request, so for TWE items they usually end up refunding your payment with an apology unless you happen to submit a request--and pay--within a short time window after the item becomes available on the P-Bandai site. It's only marginally less stressful than full PO Madness. Enough people had their orders cancelled yesterday that by the time FJ asked for payment from me last night, I cancelled mine since I knew it was going to happen anyway.

That's in line with prices from third party sellers on Amazon Japan the morning after PO Madness, which then climbed to ¥38,500 before dropping to ¥37,500 today. So, NY is "competitively" priced, but it's still a lot to pay. Prices on release day should be more reasonable.

Honest question here.

Can anyone explain me the logic of showing TV Super Parts in a Tamashii event on a Roy TV VF-1S??????

I know Bandai shenanigans, been a MW member since 2000!

But why??? If it was Yamato doing this back in the day, there would have been angry fans with pitchforks waiting in line.

What's the point of marketing these Super Parts with Roy's VF-1 when they are only canon to Hikru's VF-1S??? They pay the Hoary Froating head toadvertise the DX but canon be damned!!!

I'm not judging anyone, we are all adults and we can do as we please with our hard earned money. But are these parts confirmation of a Hikaru VF-1S in the future????

Nothing is ever surely confirmed with Bandai (Yes, Bandai, I'm looking at those still to be released HMR Tomahawks, Phalanxes, and Scout Regults). But a lot of us have theorized that they'll come back and double-dip with a TV Hikaru Skull Leader. Considering we haven't had TV-version red-tipped reaction missiles properly released one toys for quite some time, ity's like one step forward canon-wise while they take a different step back.

NY quickly sold out of their Roys at ¥35,000. That's not a good sign. Although, technically, this is only their second round, which they normally roll out during PO Madness, so they could come back with a third round at ¥40,000. I think it took three rounds for the Hikaru 1S and the YF-29 Durandal Full Set Pack to stabilize to the point where stock was available for days/weeks. With third party seller prices on AJ at ¥38,000, and most of them only shipping domestically, I could see NY coming back in a little higher to see how far they can push it. That seems to be their pattern.

So how do pre-orders from AE work? I made payment for the item but not shipping. Will they email me later with shipping cost once the item is in hand?

Theoretically, yes. I say "theoretically" because depending on where you live, they might have to hang onto your item for a while. Looks like you're in the US like me, so it's really down to when Japan Post can start shipping here again. They normally send you an email saying your item has arrived, at which point you can combine it with other items they are holding for you (if applicable) and select a shipping method (some form of air mail, including an EMS option). You'll then be charged for the cost of that shipping. It's similar to HobbyLink Japan's Private Warehouse, but not as sophisticated and several MW members have noted that the longer items stay at AE, the more likely they'll disappear and the store will stop answering your emails. A lot of stores catering to international buyers are hanging onto purchased items and doing so conscientiously. The alternative is to stop accepting orders, which would kill their business. Many of those stores do offer private courier options like DHL, FedEx, and UPS for an additional fee, and all three can still get items here pretty quickly. In some cases the option is advertised, in others (like Nippon-Yasan), you have to ask. AE is an outlier. They're using some weird off-brand local courier that is both expensive and requires you to provide lots of personal information. No thank you. There is sometimes a "ferry" option as well, which can take 2-3 months. Right now that's actually a decent timeframe if you're not in a hurry. I've had a small EMS package sitting at the Tokyo airport mail facility since mid-April....

Adding to that, if you get anything else from them, you can load them together to reduce the cost of shipping a little. I have missiles already paid for with them but I've been holding off on shipping until I had something else to bundle with. Was hoping I would bundle with Roy's 1S but AE crashed and burned for me. At least in this case the shipping for missiles and super parts should help a bit.

Personally I feel that part of the issue is collectors buying 3 or 5 units when most of us can't even get one. That's like going for thirds at dinner when some people haven't even sat down yet LOL.

Slightly off topic but related: Bandai DX fans are used to this insanity but Transformers collectors are not. The Back to the Future crossover Transformer had a "PO Madness" last Thursday and it sold out in about 1 second because only 1985 units were available and Walmart.com allowed up to 12 units per person. It showed up on Ebay minutes later at $800 and up (It only costs $30 normally). Anyway the Transformers fans lost their minds and could not believe it. But at least there's a larger release with many more units coming later and everyone should be able to get one that wants one.

I understand that Bandai is only catering to the Japanese market but isn't the Japanese market hurting as well because there aren't enough units and lots of people from outside the country are buying them all up? Personally I think they should just make more available or try to fix the scalper bot issue. Maybe every site should use a captcha? I know that's not a popular opinion but it might slow down the scalper bots.

And yes I'm bitter because NY sold out of Roy at 35,000 Yen before I even woke up today......WTF??? That's ridiculous. I'm really hoping they do a DYRL Roy in the future and make it more available. On the "plus" side I may buy that Bandai YF-19 set since I aparently can't get a Roy.

I haven't been tracking Mandarake prices of the Yamato 1/48 GBP for a while, but it has come down to 10,000 yen apparently: https://order.mandarake.co.jp/order/detailPage/item?itemCode=1142437633&ref=list&keyword=VF-1&lang=en

To keep this relevant to the thread, could this price drop be a sign that the Japanese market is expecting a Bandai DX GBP announcement in 2021??

I still think that the 1/48 Yamato GBP has its place in a collection with its sheer presence and heft, and the individual missiles.
