If we're going conspiracy theory we might as well go all out and say this is a way to gauge interest outside of Japan and finally curb stomp HG's illegal stranglehold on the word "Macross." Plenty involved with the production have expressly states their frustration.

All good things could happen...eventually. It would be nice if the original creators and some of the old fans were alive to see these hypotheticals come true.

No HD? What is this? 1995? Boooooo.... I'd rather watch the Shadow Chronicles!!!!

:ph34r::lol::lol::lol::lol:

[edit:] Conspiracy time: what if this is a testbed for Big West to gauge the interest in Macross Delta from different regions around the world due to Google Analytics? Maybe they try to figure out if it is a good idea to include English subtitles to their releases on a disc. Or even better, if interest is high enough, find a way to distribute it in other regions than Japan.

It would be better if the legal tussle's are done and now onwards delta is free to roam.

Let's just keep it as a mistake. Honestly though, if they're gauging interest to do subs, subs don't cost that much. To add to that, they're not uncommon like they were 5-6 years ago. The guys that did the subs for the Shudista box set did a great job, and I'd hope for them to get back on board for bluray sets of this series. Maybe that Shudista box set wasn't enough to gauge interest, but it sure made a lot of fans happy and did increase the interest in it inside the U.S., as well as other parts. Because of that, while technically it could be a gauge, I highly doubt it is one, and most likely just some strange error. I doubt this is hurting anything of HG's sales, as they really don't have any, and nothing in this relates to what they make, produce, or create for a screen.

Ugh. I care not what Kotaku says about anything. Terrible site.

I thought the reviewer expended a lot of effort complaining about being inundated with too many characters and subplots.

I for one was delighted with amount of stuff we were introduced to in character, plot, setting terms.

FAR too many anime suffer from sluggish/turgid/painful exposition and plot development.

If Delta can keep the tempo the of 1st episode (most of the time at least) it will buck that god awful trend and hopefully keep us all interested.........except for the guy who wrote the review obviously

He spent a lot of the review complaining, but concluded that it looked interesting and that he wanted to see more, though...

What he failed to mention is that it's not even a complete episode. Wasn't it stated in an interview that there are still more storyboarded parts of this first episode that we didn't see?

Also, it seems like he expects the entire series to be explained in the first episode. Nobody has any patience anymore it seems. That's the fun of watching a series. I think if they held back people would complain the pace is too slow. You can't win these days.

IIRC, the preview only had 390 of the 450 sequences planned. Some of those sequnces probably include the opening and ending themes and then whatever else they haven't completed. It's called "Mission 0.89" probably cuz it's roughly 89% done. It's also a weekly TV series with likely 6 months of episodes to come so if he's impatient, maybe he should wait till the end of the year to binge watch.

The other thing that bugged me about that review is when he mentiones that he feels Fronter was an homage to SDFM while Delta is an homage in a similar way to M7. But, with selective memory, he forgets all the tons of M7 and M-Zero references (and a little Plus as well) that Fronter had. Not to mention that Frontier was literally more similar to M7 with it being set on a colony fleet. If I was to call Fontier an homage to a Macross series, SDFM would be towards the bottom of my list. I mean they all have their similarities that make them Macross, but I think they are all actually different enough to stand on their own, Delta included. It would seem to me that is what Kawamori is going for.

Kind of makes me think about The Force Awakens and how many people are saying while it was a decent Star Wars movie it let them down a little becuase it seemed so simliar to A New Hope. I think there is an inherent danger in trying giving the fans more of what they want in that it could be viewed as the same old thing and not fresh.

Personally, I just wanted the music to be as good as Frontier and I could use less of the Walkure shenanigans, but I was fine with the rest of the content and what I saw in the preview episode. I think all the questions and speculation about what this show is going to be is exactly the intent of this episode. Show us a bunch of stuff and leave us to wonder how it's all going to fit together. Why were the enemy valks attacking and why did they want to put an end to Walkure? What exactly is Var syndrome? How do you get it? Is it genetic? Why did it seem like someone was causing it on purpose? Will we get an explanation of how Walkure seems to perform so fantasticaly compared with rest of the technology? etc...etc...

kotaku review? roflmao!

I pity those who take their stuff even halfway seriously...

---

At any rate, imho, Delta 089 episode was actually rather homaging MII quite heavily rather moar than M7.

Just minus the bikinis and the sexay Ishtar...

(and a little Plus as well) that Fronter had.

Speaking of, was anyone else weirded out by... I think it was in the first Frontier movie... when they listed Sharon Apple among the likes of Minmay and Fire Bomber? What the heck happened to THAT in the canon? Like, what's the "in-universe movie" version of M+? Did Sharon Apple team up with Guld and Isamu to take on Producer-san, who had hacked into the Macross's computers and was using a Ver. 2.0 of Sharon's evil AI chip to take over Earth? Is THAT why she's talked about as a savior idol instead of literally the universe's most dangerous computer virus?

Finally got around to watching episode 1. If you enjoyed Macross Frontier, Macross Δ is pretty much the same, but with more idols, more CG effects, more dogfights, and more deculture. While it's already a given that Freyja is a key component to the series' storyline, Hayate's role leaves a big question mark, as unlike the protagonists of the previous installments, he's not a Valkyrie pilot. Also, as this is a preview episode, a lot of character development is sacrificed for non-stop mecha porn.

Speaking of which, it's good to see old-school TV Zentradi mecha again. The Valkyries look sharp, but they haven't evolved much since Frontier.

Overall, Macross Δ has a very promising start. Can't wait for the full series premiere on April.

You are really unsure of his fate? He's a mecha driver and I'm positive he'll end up piloting a valk. I'd be surprised if they don't have him in a Valk in the 1st 3 episodes. Or, maybe they'll throw us all off and give us a plot twist by not putting him in a valk.

I think they spent about half the episode developing the 2 main characters and then gave us a mecha battle for some action. I'd say it was a fair balance between character development and action. I personally wouldn't say they sacrificed one for the other. I feel they gave a fair amount of both for one episode.

I read that as" most famous idols ever".

Fire Bomber are not widely known inworld as "saviour idols", the PD war is not really publicized. But they are very popular as a music band. I assume that Sharon Apple's popularity also lingers.

Basically, I think Grace would have put Elvis and the Beatles in there before Minmay if she could, but because of Doylist (real-world) considerations, she could not.

I won't say that, at least the "idols" part. If Zola heard about the Protodeviln, then the rest of the universe knows about them too. However, the rest of the universe probably heard a slightly different version of Fire Bomber's exploits during that conflict.

Sure...but they're also a century past those artists and, more importantly, beyond a huge upheaval that made them matter even less. Especially compared to an Idol that kinda saved humanity!

Ya gotta wonder how much of that stuff was actually saved from destruction aboard the Macross, right?

Sure, it wouldn't be surprising for a substantial amount of really popular music to be saved simply by coincidence of it being on some dude's harddrive as an MP3, so I give that a bit of a pass.

But the cultural destruction of the bombardment would have been astonishing. It would have very nearly been a complete reset on popular culture.

This brings up my pet peeve about Frontier and Delta's props/setting design:

Why are folks in migrant fleets and colony planets flying around in Blackhawks and driving Priuses? This especially goes for a a world where the Earth was almost entirely annihilated so even a "classic" car guy would be SOL. And also the military is way beyond the level of a helicopter.

This is especially because + and 7 was pretty much all "fresh".

I know the answer is probably "it's easy to find a computer model for those" (and I bet someone's come up with a proper, in-fiction, explanation for justification after the fact). It's too bad that GC sort of encourages this kind of thing, because I'm really not opposed to it in general. It just really grates on me because it breaks even the fluid idea of continuity that Macross has.

Could be convergent evolution. Or whatever it's called when something's invented in two different places/times independent of each other.

But seriously, WHY Sharon Apple? They must be really good at separating the artist from their music...

Well, in the liner notes for the Macross 7 album, Music from Galaxy Network Chart, it looks like they just rejiggered her and called her "Sharon Apple-R." And she's still in the top 5.

Well, she was highly popular (and perfectly legal) right up to the point where Marj went and installed an illegal/restricted bioneural processor in her that made her self-aware.

(I vaguely recall reading something about virtuoids being not-uncommon in the wake of the Sharon Apple incident, but they're all restricted to the "all flash and no substance" non-interactive/non-learning type by law.)

They had colonies on the moon and space colony clusters at the Lagrange points too... so I'd wager a lot of stuff probably survived.

The familiar-looking cars could also potentially be excused by the fact that the entire Macross Frontier emigrant ship is basically a huge, deliberately retro recreation of various areas from prewar Earth (San Francisco, Shibuya, etc., allegedly for psychological reasons), and that dedication to the prewar Earth aesthetic may have carried over to the automobile designs on offer in the fleet. Though I'd expect the resemblance to modern cars is probably superficial... the one car we see up close (Ozma's replica Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evoluzione, circa 1992!) has visible vernier thrusters and other bits of hardware that were definitely not available on the original, and is likely using a hydrogen engine like the cars in DYRL? for low emissions. (Or it may be battery-electric or using a fuel cell.)

Well...that was fun while it lasted.

Most of the Macross Delta videos on Big West's channel are back to being region locked.

I'm getting the uploader has not made this video available in your country message again.

Sigh. I just got around to watching the M∆ preview. Man I don't know how I feel about this story. Disappointed maybe? Shrug.

Walkure feels like a Magicgirl Gatchman team. The mech all seem tacked onto the story, like they're only there cuz its under the 'Macross' name banner. They don't seem necessary to the plot. Hopefully additional episodes will prove this wrong to me.

...Can't be the only person that feels this way can I?

According to the poll at least 49 people feel the way you feel.
