Macross Δ (Delta) - announcement thread

Does anyone know how many ep Macross Delta will have? 25-26?

One concern I have is the amount of characters they're showing. I mean unless this is going to be some epicly long series, it'll be hard to properly develop all these characters.

Between the Valkyrie girls singing and high speed mecha porn action to push toy sales, that doesn't really leave a whole of time for anything else.

This makes me sad. The only thing that makes it Macross seems to be the mechanical designs. Everything else is just...

just looks like everything else. Cute girls and girly boys in fancy costumes is popular let's make another generic looking anime.

It is sad that this is the only way that we will ever see new macross series. The people funding these series are looking to make a profit. They aren't making that profit by music and toy sales. They're making it on advertising. Sissy character designs and sissy storylines are required because obviously there's an huge existing market for it. Maybe real Macross can be just as popular but no one is going to risk their money to find out.

Ha, I woke up this morning to a text, "New Macross looks like ass."

I'll be reserving judgment until the end of December. The new mechanical designs look good so I'm still excited.

This is what bums me out so much about how terrible the Frontier movies are. They could have been like "Yay, we get to make some OVAs where we can take things seriously and do what WE want." Instead they made extravagant music videos and didn't clean up the story particularly well. I hope this new series is super popular as that's good for all Macross and if they get another chance at doing some OVAs, I hope we get a better effort.

Whoa! you guys need to be careful about showing any sort of negative opinions or disappointment. Other die-hard Macross fan will jump down your throat for disliking what they like.

You've spoken to Flying Dog about this? Somebody might want to let them know that they aren't making money on music anymore, and should stick to advertising. The truth is, they (assuming you're talking about Satelight, the subsidiary of Sankyo) do make money off of the toys, music, and whatnot. They license the toys out to Bandai, who gives them money as a sponsor of the show, which funds production. The music is given to Flying Dog (the anime music label of Victor), in which they make CDs. I don't know through which venue, or how much money there is, but through all of it, there is money being made. This is how Frontier was done, and while it may not be every person's favorite series, it did extremely well. So well, in fact that even two months before the first episode airs on New Years Eve, there is still Macross Frontier merchandise being made and sold.

Speaking of Macross Frontier, is it just me, or does this seem like a repeat of the same comments we heard before that came out? It is a business, and people don't go into business to lose money. If this sells, the mission is accomplished. I'm hoping for a great story, and if it is, that will be the biggest hurdle for me to get over. The mecha designs seem to hold up well, the characters, love them or hate them, seem like most of the other stuff, but that's what's selling. Give or take, if anyone is hinging on that alone, you may need to start looking now for another hobby, or buy up all the classic anime titles. Not trying to sound harsh, and this isn't directed at anyone in particular in this paragraph, it's just the classic MW.com panic button going off well premature.

I'll never understand why is so hard for Japan to make an anime with mature characters dealing with adult situations instead of teenagers saving the world all the time.

It's hard to take you seriously when the very first Macross starred a 16 year old boy and girl that save the world. If you want more mature anime then you should look outside of anime geared specifically towards teenagers.

I could be wrong, Jasonc, but I recall everyone going bonkers over Frontier footage when it came out.

Half did it seemed, the other half had the same sort of sentiments expressed here. Frontier also had a new alien threat, that got the gritty fans happy about because they all wanted to see action like Starship Troopers. That, I do remember quite well.

I honestly gotta say, I laugh every time I see someone whine about the girl idol group thing. Not interested? Don't worry, it wasn't made for you in the first place, so it's not like the sentiment matters to anyone for whom it was intended for. No need to change it, and I'll reserve my likes/dislikes of the series until it's being shown. As far as what I do see, I'm not stuck in the "What I grew up with is best" catalogue. I'm gonna keep my mind open to whatever it is that comes out. Hell, if I can watch Love Live and find it entertaining, I think I've expanded my horizon well beyond my nostalgia boundaries. I'm not saying everyone has to be on board with what they see. However, for us who live outside of Japan, we should all understand that, as I said above, this isn't made for us gritty westerners who need death, blood, and grit 100% of the time. I honestly believe that it's what makes the franchise successful. I'm sure we'll see some of that, but not in a way that many here may want or feel entitled to.

Amen to that. I can't believe how much negativity Delta is getting over a freaking trailer. I'm old enough to have grown up watching both the original Macross and Robotech as a kid living in Asia and I love a lot of older series but I still get hyped over all the new stuff that comes along. It seems like too many people nowadays are too caught up in either being wanna-be-cool hipsters who only like what's "new" or curmudgeonly nostalgics who only claim to like the "classics" without giving the new stuff a chance. Ferchrissake wait for the first episode at least and give it a chance people!

You don't have to like it, and you can voice your opinions to that effect. I think the reactions you are getting are because you literally said you wanted to see all these characters KILLED.

That's pretty alarming to read.

I'm wondering if Var Syndrome is perhaps short for Varauta Syndrome?

Heh, heh

Honestly, I was wondering the same thing.

Actually, what he said was he wanted to see half of the characters in each poster killed off by the end of the series.

I was half joking in regards to the post I made about characters death, and I did not said I want ALL of them killed off. So don't twist my word, but I do apologize if I offended anybody with that post.

But let's be honestly here. Character death is pretty much a staple in Macross.

Original Macross: Roy Focker

DYRL: Roy Focker (again)

Macross Zero: Roy Focker (he lived because we needed him in the original series. :p) Nora/DD

Macross Plus: Guld

Macross 7: Can't comment since I didn't finish.

Macross Frontier: Michael

So, when I asked who's going to die in Delta you don't think that's a legitimate question?

As for my reaction. I'll just say this. If some of you claim to be open minded you wouldn't be telling other Macross fan to get out of anime/hobby because they don't agree with the direction Delta is heading.

This is all I'm going to say about this issue. Let's move on.

IMO the Frontier movies were fantastic because they were extravagant music videos! OK, well, some of the first one, but most of the second one. The second movie in particular is great because it shows just how much visual creativity is possible with animation, and the artists are EXTREMELY talented, I am very jealous.

Delta isn't blowing me over, in that respect, so far. Not too crazy about it just being LoveLive/AKB0048/Aikatsu/IdolMaster/PriPara yet again. It's going to be all about how the action syncs up to the music, and whatnot, for me. I think the main girl's design and costume is nice enough, but the rest is just like.. Gaudy. Risa Ebata had a graphic designer background, right? It shows. This designer has a videogame background, and hey, that shows, too. Not my cup of tea.

I gave up on story and characters in Macross long ago, and it still manages to entertain me, I think it's all fantastic in the end. Looking forward to seeing what this brings to the table.

But even if you ignore all that, look at all the awesome stuff it's gonna wash in with the Delta tide!! Giant VF-1J Chogokin toys chock-full of gimmicks! An ACTUAL FB2012 No-BS-this-time VF-4G!! HiMetal Super Ostrich! Some MacrossII crap! There is a heck of a lot to be excited about, and it's all thanks to Delta, so you all better hope it does well!!

Well said Jason and Renato. What little has been shown is way too early to judge this series. Lets judge it after viewing several real episodes. It's Macross so I plan to be in hell or highwater. But it reminds me why I don't always enjoy being around older people. The older we get, the less accepting of things that appear to be new, different and a little out of our comfort zone.

I enjoy being around older people because their tastes are often more refined and matured.

I'm really looking forward to this. And I really love when we get a glimpse of the capital ships. For instance is the SDF type another sister ship like the Global? It'll be fun to find out.

Also, as someone who enjoyed AKB0048 I don't get that vibe from the trailer. The trailer makes it appear as though these different groups are fighting for territory. Could that be control of the planet or something else? Again, it'll be fun to find out.

Not sure if I'm thrilled yet with the arm-mounted cannons, but I will be much happier if they are eventually revealed as beam weaponry. As beam guns it would be a great way to give more attention to beam weapons which is something that get's ignored so often in the animation. Which has always seemed bizarre to me given that the creators keep including such weapons in every valkyrie, yet we almost never see them utilized. The Frontier valkyries largely featured the most beam weaponry of the valkyries since the Macross Plus era, yet we barely saw them. I don't want to see the Gun Pod phased out or absent, but if we get more than a few YF-21-styled forearm gun action sequences, that would be a VERY welcome trend in Macross combat. Give those beam weapons at least some love.

The trouble with Directed Energy Weapons is they are not as efficient as projectile weapons. DEW's require significant energy to produce and they do dissipate over long distances. In space, projectile weapons retain most of their velocity, whereas DEW's will eventually dissipate. Once I understood that fun fact, I came to love projectiles gun pods...

Crazy idea...

Legacy of the Protoculture... What if the planet colonized already has inhabitants, Kingdom of Wind, and the UNG did an uplift like the Zolans except it didn't turn out well as expected? Resulting to two planetary wars called Delta Wars. This could be why invading or colonizing planets with sentient life became a no-no in the Galaxy Treaty which NUNG members are supposed to abide by.

Which could explain the lack of NUNS.

With Grace's attempted invasion it's a political and diplomatic clusterfrak for the NUNG with the locals.

Hey, I like that "Crazy Idea"! Sounds like a very cool angle. The question is, where does the virus fit in?

I'd say "Varl" rather than "Var," and the "va" here is spelled differently than the "va" in "Varauta," so I doubt there's a connection.

Wait, varl as in "sounds like snarl"? Or maybe a mispronunciation of vowel? Yeah, "Vowel Syndrome" and perhaps everyone stops being able to use consonants. Wow, that could be terrible!

:p

If Delta is good, it's good; if it's not, it's not--regardless of the niche it's trying to fit into. It could very well be a serious, gritty war drama that falls flat on its face and sucks. Who knows, we've seen so little. If it's stupid we'll know within the next few months.

That's not far off from Aquarion Logos...

And yeah, sounds like snarl. It's ヴァール, whereas "Var" would probably be ヴァー.

Agreed. Just getting really tired of people from both side being over-sensitive as heck when it comes to their favorite show.

I'm just here for the toys man. ;)

Well...My heart is in pieces..I think upcoming Macross realeases won`t be for me anymore. I am just keeping my original SDFM memories for the moving on, maybe as some guys here have said, we don`t belong today`s anime target...I guess I will find shelter in the upcoming Star Wars Movies, they will ease my dissapointment...

You'll always have Robotech.

It's too bad their forums are gone. I wonder how they'd react to this.

I've seen a few reactions in some of the Facebook groups. Most of them aren't saying anything, but among the vocal ones, most are saying it's probably going to be bad or not their thing.

Only one guy I've seen (so far, at least) has suggested adapting it as a new Robotech series.

I've enjoyed reading all the posts since the reveal. Nearly everything I wanted to say was already summed up by Marzan:

Time difference meant I could only see this a couple of minutes ago. I was excited and extremely suprised by what I saw. It' didn't blow me away immediately like Frontier did, but I was encouraged.

I fully expected Kawamori to go full AKB0048 with the new Macross series (Idols and young girls sell guys, get over it) and instead there was lot more of what looked like a neo-medieval fantasy thing going on. Almost reminded me a bit of dare i say Escaflowne?

The Valks are impressive and I was happy to see some good old Zentran action. The character designs I didn't like too much, but I suppose that after 3,4 episodes one gets used to them.

I hope we have a really good script for this one.

All I'll add is that I'm actually sorta bummed by Tochiro's info that the idols won't be pilots. More than anything, I am looking forward to a Macross show my wife may actually get excited about; she's never shared my enthusiasm for Macross, but we both loved Escaflowne and AKB0048.
