The first couple of years of Diaclone were sci-fi based designs, but the later "Car Robots" sub-line (based on realistic, present-day vehicles) were released in the US as Transformers. Arguably the first transforming robot toy was Popy's DX Raideen chogokin released in 1975, so transforming robots have been a thing for at least 44 years. I'm definitely a beliver of the shrinkwrap to a board method though. After seeing so many packages shipped that way come with the contents safe inside, seems to be working well.
