Looks like Hoobyshop2go.com   finally has the Gernsback for Pre-order.   Don't think I have ever tried this company online, but I have bought from their physical store before.  At least its USD $267.41,  cheaper than where I preordered from.

https://hobbyshop2go.com/en/metal-build-m9-gernsback-ver-iv

Shows that they are in hongkong ,  if you convert the price , they are charging 29356 yen.

If you live in hong kong you can preorder it direct from hk p bandai .  They post the M9 for preorder on all the Asia p Bandai sites now .

It would be great if they have the flight pack for the Metal build Laevatein..   Maybe when the next season of the FMP comes out on tv, Bandai will make one...

they kinda did a couple of years ago. ;)   still waiting. ........

The old Laeavatein and the new Laevatein also have the same attachment points on the back too so that's somewhat a good sign that it's coming in the future.

hopefully.

Cool!  Is there a way to find out approximately when it will be released?

So... two months late, here's a preorder link (for a February release): https://hlj.com/1-60-scale-hg-arbalest-ver-iv-with-emergency-deployment-booster-ver-bans56756

There's also an "Aggressor Squadron" M9 (March release): https://hlj.com/1-60-scale-hg-gernsback-ver-iv-aggressor-squadron-bans57066

And while I'm at it, re-linking the 1/48 Laevatein + Booster kit: https://hlj.com/1-48-scale-full-metal-panic-invisible-victory-arx-8-laevatein-last-battle-mode-aos00955

I'm tempted just to see the line art (it will have it right?), but I have no budget for this. I'll put this in the list of 'maybe' future purchases and forget for now.

My copy just rolled in this morning, practically still warm from the printing press.

It's not quite what I had expected.

Indeed, in the most erect of dick moves the MITHRIL M9 Gernsback isn't even on the actual cover... just the obi.  It feels a bit like false advertising since that's the M9 that everyone's most familiar with from the light novel, anime, manga, etc.

Virtually all of Master File Arm Slave: M9 Gernsback is about the mass production Geotron M9 Gernsback used by the US Army.  Most of the coverage is of the initial production type M9 Gernsback (front left) that appeared only briefly in the ninth volume of the Full Metal Panic! light novel in the hands of Delta Force.  The M9A2 Gernsback Enhanced (facing right) and M9A2SOP Gernsback Sigma Elite (top center) from Full Metal Panic! Another figure less prominently, but still get a decent amount of attention.  All mention of MITHRIL and the M9s it used are crammed into the last ten pages, which is mostly "amateur photos" of them in the field.

Not a bad book by any means, but I feel like more attention should've been given to the MITHRIL XM9D Falke, XM9E Gernsback, and ARX-7 Arbalest.

EDIT: Will post some photos of the contents later today.

That is terrible and amazing at the same time.

From an in-universe perspective, it makes sense. I mean, Mithril's basically a myth, and how would you get documentation of their elite custom mecha anyways? And there'd be wildly more documentation of the "real" version even if all else was equal.

But from a real-world perspective... it isn't a screw-job, it's a screw-career.

Despite name-dropping the main Full Metal Panic! series on the obi, it does seem to be written more with fans of Full Metal Panic! Another in mind.

Most unhelpfully, Master File Arm Slave: M9 Gernsback omitted the Master File/Master Archive series's usual dated foreword.

When it was active, MITHRIL was an open secret among the NATO brass and SpecOps units.  Civilians were dimly aware of it only via conspiracy theories, which MITHRIL encouraged to discredit anyone who attempted to publicize their existence.  This book appears to have been written in-universe a couple years after Full Metal Panic! Another (2011-2012), so by then MITHRIL had been a defunct organization for 15+ years and its few surviving staff had moved on to the private sector or disappeared.  I guess the MITHRIL section is that there's not a MITHRIL AI operating anymore to discredit people who had photographic evidence of MITHRIL operations like the highly public confrontation in front of Tokyo Jindai HS.

Attached are some shots of the book's contents... it has an abnormally large number of full-page images, but they're pretty well done.

I rather liked this diagram, which shows the movement of the mechanical articulations inside the M9's knee joint.

The US Army M9 Gernsback mass production type eliminated the two 12.7mm chainguns in the head in favor of replacing the XM18 wire gun in the right arm with a single 12.7mm rotary cannon.

Thanks for posting these, Seto. I like those diagrams, but does not move me enough to purchase. The logic to set this in-universe does not make sense to me. Maybe the makers were just scratching an itch to do these 'real' versions? At least I don't have to worry about missing out on this book.

Not gonna lie... I'm rather disappointed with this book too.  It's well-written and informative, but I was expecting something more connected to the original light novel and/or anime.

(Also, I think the M9/M9A1 and M9A2 heads are kind of ugly.)

Writing the book as though it were an in-universe mass market publication wasn't a creative choice unique to Master File Arm Slave: M9 Gernsback.

All of the SoftBank Master File and Master Archive books I've read so far have been like that.  I'd assume it's a trait common to the entire line, including the other one-offs they've done for DragonarVifam, and VOTOMS.  The Macross Master File books are the most blatant about it, identifying their in-universe publisher and year of publication in-universe on the cover and even including a dated foreword from the in-universe publisher at the start of the book.  Most sci-fi tech manuals are written as in-universe publications in my experience.  They're just following the line's established and well-entrenched style, though I guess that's a detrimental approach for Full Metal Panic! since the story's focus is on an elite paramilitary outfit that officially doesn't exist.

(MITHRIL's strategy of suppressing evidence of their existence online by using bots to get the poster dismissed as a crackpot conspiracy theorist seems to have worked fairly well if their existence is still just a conspiracy theory 15+ years after the organization was destroyed in a surprisingly public show of force by AMALGAM.  About the only entity to actually acknowledge their existence is Ebisu Heavy Industries from Full Metal Panic! Another, who apparently reverse-engineered their TAROS from "a white AS of unknown affiliation that was destroyed in Tokyo" (the Arbalest).

Spoiler

Being written as in-universe publications is why Variable Fighter Master File self-disclaims as not official setting material.  Several of the books are written years into the future from the "present day" of the most recent series.  The VF-25 book that was released in 2011 is dated 2065, the VF-31 book is dated 2072, and the most recent VF-1 book was dated 2075.

In case you wanted to read the light novels these designs come from, a company called "J-Novel Club" are re-releasing the FMP! novels with a brand new translation.

https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2019/03/18/j-novel-club-announces-full-metal-panic-novels-and-more

You can read a preview on the product page: https://j-novel.club/s/full-metal-panic

I had thought that only the manga had been localized, but I guess some of those volumes I passed by in the Borderses and BnNs were actually the novels.
