John Carter of Mars 2012 Film

Recommended Posts

Trailer for it is finally up and I'm pleasantly surprised. I like that they used fairly mellow music instead of the scream-o or bombastic stuff normally used on trailers. I also like that they kept the framing story. I can live without everyone being naked. At this point, I'm cautiously optimistic for the film.

At first I thought the trailer was another Conan promo, but it may actually be good.

Looks promising, indeed. Hopefully, it will not end up looking like

.

I remember that. So bad that it got featured on The Soup years ago as a Sci-Fi Channel original movie and Clip of the Week.

Traci Lords, a former porn star from the '80s.

She's the one that almost killed the porn industry Oh yeah miss "I'm underage but I'll fake my ID, make a bunch of movies, become a huge star, and when I'm finally legal I'll make one film I only own the rights then come out and admit I was underage. That way I can make a killing and use the infamy to launch a mainstream career!"...

So how did that work out?

Regardless of the results, it was a brilliant scam. "Whool, meet eyes."

I'll check this out once it's released. Two stars from the Wolverine Origins film. I've been reading Warlord of Mars and Deja Thoris. BTW, why is Deja Thoris wearing so many clothes? :p :P

Lynne Collins is Deja Thoris BTW. I'm sure Tars Tarkas will be in the film. I wonder who will do his voice.

Can you imagine the pitch to Hollywood execs for that one Graham?

"Yeah, so our hero, he's this pasty white albino with a huge chip on his shoulder, in love with his cousin, and his sword drinks souls. Oh, and he's a drug addict."

"But he's cool, right?"

"Not really."

"He's the straight man in a twisted world?"

"Er, no - kind of the other way around really."

"Is there some sort of redemption arc to the story? You know, ending on a positive note, where he changes the world for the better?"

"Ah... no. Definitely not."

"NEXT!"

Needless to say, I would love to see an Elric series. I think a mini series might work well, as long as it had a huge budget. And it would tell the full story of Stormbringer.

yes so you cry when they rape the story. there has not been a decent tarzan movie yet so why would john carter of mars be any different

No idea if "Tarzan the Ape Man" followed the books, but it was most certainly a decent movie.

If you don't like that then there is always the Bo Derek version...

Wait a minute--so the mockbuster is going to beat the Disney version to the screen--er, the video store, anyway? Oh, those guys are good [at being bad].

It beat it by like 3 years. And at the time it was being sold as "based on classic story that inspired James Cameron's Avatar."

Cautiously optimistic about this movie. Loved the books as a kid.

At least they kept the Earth scenes in the correct era and didn't update them to modern day times, as I feared they would.

Far too many clothes though!

Graham

Probably why I'm going to avoid the books. Already bent by the diffirences in Walking Dead... And I'm still not over the Spawn film. :(

Saw it Friday, it wasn't bad. Having not read the books I didn't have any set expectations with regards to the story, etc. I will say that it was fairly enjoyable. Not anything that I would see again in the theater, but if you're a fan of Sci-Fi and/or the book I'd say it's worth a look (matinee).

The acting, effects and story were all decent and worthy of a big-budget Disney film - but how the story compares to the novels I can't say.

*edit to add Woola was freaking awesome and actually stole the show in many parts

-b.

Saw it Friday too, in IMAX 3D. Having read the original novels (a couple of them, at least), I thought they were a reasonable interpretation. As far as story goes, I found it simple but enjoyable. Definitely a pulp/action sort of air. There's one scene, inside the Thark temple, that's a little exposition heavy and, judging from some comments from fellow moviegoers, if you don't listen to it all then the next few scenes are a little fuzzy to follow. The performances were strong but nothing spectacular. I thought Lynn Collins as Dejah Thoris provided the best performance, and I was pleasantly surprised by Taylor Kitsch in the title role (although, admittedly, my only previous exposure to him was as Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine). Mark Strong and Dominic West provided decent antagonists, and the supporting cast was solid. Art and sound design were sufficiently epic and well-done all around. All in all, I found it a satsifying Friday night popcorn film.

And absolutely, Woola rocked.

That was crappy but then I saw another trailer on the "related" side menu.

"Troll Hunter", a Noregian film a bout trolls.

Just DL the 5 volumes from Ibooks. Going to read it on the plane.

Heh... when I read them, it helped to keep in mind that they were first published in 1917. Some of the concepts are a little dated. That being said, once you accept the central conceit of Mars having life in the first place, the rest of the story holds up surprisingly well. The whole "9th ray" idea isn't any more outlandish than half the wild things Star Trek has postulated... it's just wrapped in less technobabble.

Saw the movie it was ok adaptation and ok movie. I'm Glad I've read the books because I noticed a lot of subplots that were included were barely dealt with to the point where I think adding them in hurt the movie likeTars Tarkus and Sola. Overall I didn't regret watching it and woola was amazing.

You think they'll have a part 2 or a continuation of what happens after he gets back to Mars? I haven't read the books yet.. but I figured I'd ask if the book addresses that. I know its a spoiler alert but I think it would motivate me to read it even if my eyes fall asleep.

There are events in the first book that the movie doesn't cover, so a sequel could deal with those.

The following spoiler reveals events in the movie, and only a small one about the first book. :D

As in the movie, John does end up back on Earth at the end of that first book, but there are differences in the hows and whens of it, as you will see. The follow-up books deal with John's subsequent trips to Barsoom. I won't spoil any of how that happens.

Gonna have to try and catch this film, It has been totally slated in the U.K today they were saying it was the biggest loosing film of all time.

Experience has shown me the film critics are best mostly ignored, I have lost count the times they have said a film was crap or outstanding and I have completely disagreed with them.
