Batman Year One

I hope this is gonna be good. It's actually one of my favorite comic books to read, just a hair above Dark Knight Returns. But I can't tell from the trailer. Animation is so so but the art looks OK in stills. They just have to get the story right I guess...

There is a behind the scenes featurette of this on The Green Lantern emerald knights dvd. I think it's going to be very good. Thew producers state that they were trying to be as faithful to the source material as possible, including the artwork.

DC's animated movies have been great.

It actually looks good... but I am so, so, so over 'superhero origins' stories. I think we've seen the parent's scene time, and time again.

From what I hear, it's actually more of a Gordon story, than a straight up "Batman" story, definately looks interesting.

It is. Having read Year One, there is a stronger focus on Gordon than Batman. Not to say Batman is pushed back, but Gordon has a little more dialogue compared to Batman's. We see more Batman through that hard-boiled detective-style monologue.

My first thought was: Didn't we pretty much have a live-action version of Year One with certain scenes in Batman Begins?

Still it looks fairly promising.

Wonder if they'll do a Gordon trailer, since he's nowhere to be found in the trailer >EXO< posted.

The problem with this story is that even though it's pretty original when it came out, it's been ripped off so many times that this will seem kinda cliche by the time it comes out. But it's easily one of Frank Miller's best when he was actually a great writer. I'm not at all against CG animation but the book is also loose and natural in style that the movements don't seem right. Like I said, it's all going to hinge on the interpretion of the story for me.

Here's some older links to read thru:

Should have the Gordon thing because it's faithful to the story according to Bruce Timm... that's one comforting thing is that Timm is involved.

Under the red hood was really good!!!So I,ve got high hopes for this one.

Loved Batman yr:1 when I read it when I was 15.

If I remember correctly ,didn,t Batman have a holstered gun under his armpit(like a secret agent) type thing for an issue within the year 1 graphic novel?

Wasn't David Mazzucchelli the artist behind the original comic? I remember this one sucked big hairy balls, looking like the average mercantile follow-up to one of the greatest comics ever (ie Dark Knight), from the uninspired scenario to the bland art: a waste of time and money, basically...

Wrong book. You're thinking of the Batman/Doc Savage Special called First Wave.

  • 3 months later...

If they made The Killing Joke an animated short with The Dark Knight Returns when it comes out, you'd make a lot of fanboys (and me) very happy.

Speaking of Year One...I skimmed through it and it was fairly faithful to the comic.

Ditto. I had a nerdgasm the first time I saw the episode of the "New Batman Adventures" with the "Dark Knigh Returns" scene.

Can't wait for TDKR. And if DC does do "The Killing Joke"? sploosh

I saw it. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't as good as I'd hoped, either. It may or may not be faithful to the comic... I don't really read DC. I know Batman mostly through the Keaton films, the Nolan films, the classic Animated series, and the cartoon The Batman (and the two Arkham games, I suppose).

I mean, it was a good story about a good cop with human failings trying to take on a corrupt city from within a corrupt police force. It was a good Jim Gordon story. Batman, though, was more of a bit player in Gordon's story than the central character. So while I don't think it's a bad movie by any stretch, I (and I suspect other more casual Batman fans) much prefer Under the Red Hood.

Being a Gordon story was pretty much the point of this one, and I personally thought it came out great. Pacing wise, I'm suprrised how well it flowed and how full it was for the hour runtime. The Catwoman bonus was also pretty good.
