Hello all.  Long time lurker on this thread.  Some of you may remember me from doing custom 1/48 Yamato valks years ago.  Well after about a 3-4 year hiatus from modeling, I finally completed a project that was kicking around for over 15 years.  Yes, that long.  For those not in the know, it is an HO scale Grand Trunk Western GP38-2.  It is an unpowered Athearn shell with tons of aftermarket detail parts.  It is not 100% accurate but captures what I was going for.  I am happy with the loco itself.  The base I feel I could have done better on.  Applied several techiques picked up from other modelers and used this as a test for future projects.  Let me know what you think.

Up next, I am switching gears again.  Already started on 1/35 M1A1 Abrams.  I just hope this one doesn't take 15 years!

So I had some time today to work on the VF-19A and the X-29.

by the pacing and masking needed, I think the X-29 will be first to be finished.

Moving right along nicely @Urashiman 👍🏼

Here's a little update on my Megaroad-01  VF-4 Enigma. Still need to finish the pilot.  I have the load out pretty much figured out. Gunpod is almost done, a little more masking and paint and decals. Using these Bandai Super Parts set, i think the UUM-7 missile packs are a tad big, compared to others, such as Wave and Hasegawa. I originally wanted to position the UUM-7's on the inner wing , and have the gunpod alongside the AMM-1 cluster underneath the main fuselage. But the UUM-7's were crowding the thruster/leg stabilizers too much. So , as of now, the gunpod is being mounted to the the port side inner wing. Beside the RMS-1. Personally, i think it's better positioned underneath the fuselage. Most times a gunpod is mounted the the wing(on the VF-4) it's a symmetrical set up , with an additional gunpod on the other wing (that's an idea..) I may shave down the pylon mounts, so the armaments are more snug to the underside. In which case i may yet have the room I want to rearrange the load out to my preference. Any who, here's a few pics of where she's at..927A923D-90D8-4A50-B5C0-32869213A917.jpeg.069c9996741803ac25789d98352c1339.jpegFA798B8D-04A1-4745-B5BC-17E3A8D3EAC3.jpeg.e5afd7edb59bb7294942fb9ae3fc8448.jpeg

Nice chooch. My brother was the train guy in the family. We lived close to the tracks and while everyone else would be ticked because we had to wait for the train, he would be fascinated and watch it go by pointing out little details that no one else in the car really cared about, but we didn’t say that part out loud. Whenever I see a train model or electric set up, I remember the simple days of being a kid and having less important things to worry about.

Those are some fly boys you want on your wing!

And yeah, even though I haven't finished my Battlestar Pegasus, I'm cracking out another kit!

In 1922, the Washington Naval Treaty was signed to put a cap on the number of dreadnought-type warships being fielded by the most powerful governments. Battleships and battlecruisers from the major powers were scrapped, while a few were altered during construction, turning them into carriers. For the US it was the Lexington class, Lexington and Saratoga, and for the Japanese it was the Amagi class, Amagi and Akagi. Amagi never made it to completion, having been damaged during and earthquake, so only one of the four that started out as the Amagi class was finished, the aircraft carrier Akagi.

I've had it in mind to build the Akagi in all three phases of her 'life,' the intended battlecruiser version, and both carrier phases, the double deck version and the final, full deck carrier that served as the flagship during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Thankfully, Fujimi actually made a model of the IJN Amagi, the 'what-if' battlecruiser, and so that is where I am starting, building this as the Akagi as she was originally intended.

Any of you airplane buffs wanna give me your opinions on which 1/72 F-35 kit is the best?  Hasegawa? Tamiya? Italeri? I'm leaning towards Tamiya just because I've watched guys building the 1/48 version and it's an extremely well-designed kit, I'm assuming trickle down methods apply to the 1/72 kit...

All opinions welcome!

Hasegawa HAE46 F-35 Lightning II B Version US Marine Model Kit, 1:72 Scale (amazon.com)

TAMIYA 60791-000 F-35B Lightning II, Model Making, Crafts, Hobby, Adhesive, Plastic Kit, Gray (amazon.com)

Italeri 510001425 1:72 F-35B Lightning II V/STOL Version, -Standing Model Building, Crafts, Hobbies, Gluing, Plastic kit, Detailed, Unvarnished (amazon.com)

I had the Italeri one in a double pack with the X-32 as the X-35. The kit was building okay, but it lacks details. It seems that the italeri kit on your link is a completely new mould and has more details though.

My "game-related" shelf is growing a bit, and soon my little Ace Combat kits will have company. These both technically need some glue, and a lot of painting to look finished, but I'm actually really enjoying the quick snap-together build-ups.  Well.. I say "quick," but these kits are built like multi-colored jigsaw puzzles, especially the Raiden.  It's a fun challenge to try building them without looking at the instructions. ^_^

The Vic Viper is actually holding together completely unglued, which doesn't seem like it should be possible, but these kits are molded incredibly precisely, and those red control surfaces are held on completely by friction on absolutely microscopic pegs.  The Raiden's did need a little dab of cement to stay in place though.

Hey @derex3592  I've been on a look out for new 1/72 F-35 as well.  The Tamiya is not from trickle down from their new tool 1/48 (which I've heard it's outstanding!).  It's just a re-box of the 2019 Italeri kit; https://www.scalemates.com/kits/tamiya-60791-f-35b-lightning-ii--1305529

I saw somewhere online that Tamiya has teased that they are going to reduce their 1/48 F-35 to 1/72 sometime in the near future (its one of those silhouette announcements but you can recognize its a F-35)  however my guess its still a year away, but I don't think its a B - its most probably an A like their 1/48.

After a bit of a hiatus I'm finally back to getting some of these customs and restorations completed.

I'm working on my 1/72 Yamato VF-11C custom, I tracked down a Hasegawa VE-11 kit, so I can use the Fast-packs & proper gunpod for this plus its decals. Some of the white paint bled through the tape, so I have some touching up to do. :)

My 1/48 Max VF-1A has really yellowed despite being in the box all these years. I'm going to strip it of all its stickers, disassemble it, mask it off, primer and give it a full repaint. Then finish it off with water slide decals.

Is the backpack section for the 1/48's still available from shapeways? I need to replace that part too!

Another little update. I managed to finish the gunpod, but the darker gray jagged markings didn't come out as dark as they should have. I will more than likely do a few dark washes over them. And though the gunpod won't be as visible, I would still like to mount it under the main fuselage and position the UUM-7's next to the RMS-1's. Which will require shaving down the pylon mounts a bit. I've also finally just started working on the pilot.FB6C568A-0E49-40E2-91E9-B03E29873B59.jpeg.cdd8a825c0b36a7ef04dd167fffe8c41.jpegB61CAD41-839A-4F34-85F3-D1BE38D65EE8.jpeg.26f4f0ec416179bbbbfeb581b1a336aa.jpegB8C78521-0792-4928-BCEC-C8078828056C.jpeg.52491e1d3dc0c3cf2f8adc986fb71e13.jpegDCA291FD-1C4A-4078-8710-B2B60A9BC207.jpeg.8e52ab0331607ec8b2f75b1e1c8ee005.jpeg7D70ADA8-8515-4B6B-9A14-5BB11D5345EC.jpeg.acbca0167e1d291b7fc781ef5b6fbf8a.jpeg

Awesome VF-4! I like it!

Yesterday I started scribing new panel lines on the CF-116 (F-5B). So annoying, but I will do this slowly and carefully.

That is one beautiful VF-4, @Bolt! If I ever do mine, I hope it comes out half as good.

@Urashiman I try to steer clear of panel scribing! Or if I have to, use the raised lines (if they are) already there as a guide.

On the Akagi, I finished the first little modification.

Actually, the first was even getting a lower hull for this waterline kit!

It came without, so I had also bought a Hasegawa full deck Akagi just to steel the lower hull from it. (It has since been sold off as a waterline kit.) And since I also have another Fujimi's 1/700 Akagi, I compared the bottoms after thinking that Hasegawa's was a little too flat and featureless. And there is a notable difference.  Fujimi's has a longer, more gentle curve, whereas the Hasegawa is flatter and with a far sharper 'drop.' The keel ridge also doesn't go as far. I could leave it, but since I would eventually plan to have them side by side, I figured a closer resemblance is better.

It's also a little long compared to the upper hull, but I'll just sand that excess off.

rKQnxJo.jpg

But first, I added a strip of styrene that will be blended in, and then hit both sides with sanding sticks. (The bottom hull in the pic is the Hasegawa part.)

L1AiXEb.jpg

At the end, the slope is far longer and looks a lot better, and less toy-like.

bLZYO8j.jpg

Q0A4pTS.jpg

And with that done, I can now get to the first step in the instructions!😁

@Thom I usually try to keep the original panel lines as well, but for this kit, the panel lines were sacrificed during the process of fixing the kit. I had no other choice. I probably have to putty away the already done panel lines again, as I mixed up the F-5 versions. The F-5B and the CF-116 have slightly different panel lining. UGH

At that scale, you could always just draw them in with a mechanical pencil.
