Whats Lying on your Workbench MK IV

Hey everyone!

I did a bunch of sanding and filling and "pre-panel lining" on the F-5B (CF-116). So this is where I am so far. I have been sanding and sanding and filling and sanding. Rinse and repeat.

So I decided to spray the thing with the good old Tamiya surface primer to check for any stuff that needs even more sanding. And boy, the primer didn't fail me, but that #@%&$?! kit frustrates me. After all this sanding, there are still so many things to do.

Very nice photos of your staged progress.  It feels like we are joining you on the ride.  Hope you succeed to fix some of those in he next update.

@Thom @arbit @derex3592

Thanks for the encouraging words. No worries, the adventure (much more sanding) will continue.

But I got tired of that thing after sanding away and decided to work on the VF-1P a bit more. Here two renders fresh from the renderbakery.

I am not too sure if I will leave the canopy like this. It looks a bit too much like the weird 80s Bandai kit canopy.

Just started learnibg 3D drawing and printing. Bought the deck and elevator section stl file of the famous Prometheus. Planning Redrawing most of the files and adding details.

The pictures shows the  printed catwalk. The width of the thin bars you can see on the grille is 0.4 mm and the gap between is 0.30 mm.

@Thom Your ship mods are looking great!

@derex3592 Those lights AND your skylights both look really nice (other wise your furry friend wouldn't be there)😁

@electric indigo Your primer looks SMOOTH.

@Urashiman Despite all the flaws still on the surface, that is a VAST improvement over the original! You can do it!

@ahiachris Those look cool! What type of mod are you doing? - MT

@ahiachris Nice print! What resolution has you SLA printer?

@MechTech Thanks a lot man!

Working on the VF-1P again.

I think I have the canopy right now. Took me a while to get the proper form. In the back, canopy v1, in the front canopy v3.14 (the one I am satisfied with).

EDIT:

Some progress from today.

Panel lines in real life, as in virtual life are hard to carve, and take their time.

I repositioned the RCS quads from the cut out panels to the new trialing edge of the saucer. A little messy but some CA and sanding with smooth that all out. That should have been done before the upper/lower saucer halves were glued together.

r0a6Gc1.jpg

And then I skinned the opening. The new shuttle bay doors will be in the 'corners' and will be the last panels to go in. Those doors will be inset, so I'll need to frame and add them before gluing those opening shut.

More to come!

@Urashiman - Your digital Valk is looking good! @Thom -Red Alert! Shields Up! Looking good!

Over here this morning I tackled the forward and aft cargo area cleanup that's needed to happen for months now. Got that mostly sorted with skinny sanding sticks and a little good old fashioned hand painting with Tamiya acrylics believe it or not!  I also got my forward and aft cargo covers finished and test fitted! Ever so slightly crinkled kitchen foil painted off white...looks like a canvas cover!  With any luck we are going to get the bow and stern covers ON the ship tomorrow AM. Stay tuned!

The original 1974 Kroft version, the 1991 remake series, or the 2009 movie? :p

(hint: the first one was the best! :D )

The original is the best, I don’t remember the remake much and the goofy film had me laughing at times, mostly for the pure hatred towards Chaka.

I think it's the og series theme. Don't remember a remake in '91, and thoroughly enjoyed the 2009 movie!:D

It‘s putty time children!

grey revell putty for the things that need more sanding.

And then I noticed these giant gaps. Revell putty won’t help here.

PRO TIP that I wish I had known about an hour ago......When hand brushing Mr. Metal Primer onto a PE fret, DO NOT lay the fret on a piece of anything that you don't want the PE fret to be ATTACHED to! The damn primer dries quick and basically before I knew it had almost glued it to the damn cardboard sheet that came in the package with the PE. I managed to get it off but ruined some of the PE parts in the process...mind you this is the 2nd set of $20+ PE railings I have paid for...NEXT TIME I will definitely spend a little more $$$ and get the spray can of the Metal Primer and go that route....

If that ever happens again, try 91% alcohol to free it without harming the PE parts.

Could try silicone baking sheets. The paints I’ve used don’t seem to stick to that stuff

Oh boy! I'm pulling up chair!

Thanks Thom! :)

Now, I cannot promise anything with this, since my tooling is fairly limited and so is my materials supply. But as long as the ride goes, I'll be driving it! There's quite a bit of wood to remove, and sawdust makes my wife very ill (not to mention outside is a big no-no with our new property managers and the neighborhood already a bunch of punks!). All that said, we'll see if I have a ship at the end.

Stay tuned... we may just be off to outer space...

Good tips! In other news... @Urashiman inspired me to do this! Less than $13 shipped! Never built a Hobby Boss kit, but this will be a fun, quick (hopefully) after Titanic build before the Raptor.

Haha! Great! Have fun! I hope it won't be as annoying as my F-5B (CF-116). Can you post pictures of the runners?

@Urashiman I hope you you smoothed that over with water before it dried. That will be fun to sand down (in a bad way). It's looking good though!

@electric indigo Nice mod to the windscreen!

@pengbuzz WOW! Talk about whittling down some wood! I look forward to seeing what you do with that!

The hobby stuff has been slow. A lot of my spare time has been going to museum signage for the TACAMO organization guys.

For the Spitfire, this is the second canopy. The first was badly cracked by solvents I didn't know would kill it.

TF-59.jpg.dce94902cbfd26d709f6b93231e21c84.jpg

And the first pilot (for it too) I have done seriously in years! This is the OLD Monogram 1/72 Black plastic F-14 Tomcat snap-kit. Plane sucked, the pilot was cool and was kept over the decades. The visor is only Prismacolor silver pencil. Looks better in person. Also highlighted buckles with it too.

TF-60.jpg.27329bd108888a811a6f9aa213acc5f6.jpgTF-61.jpg.4edc363401016bb4ab01dd5c685c325b.jpg

The Spitfire needs an overcoat, but the humidity is too high right now. So I started a side project. This is for an upcoming light robot build. The model was cool, but as usual, the gun seemed to be an afterthought. So I drilled the holes out and made a steel barrel for it. Then a flash suppressor to make it look a little more cool.

That's it for now. Thanks for checking in guys! - MT

Cool @derex3592 - I just wished there was a pre-mixed with the grey solution.  If you mist it, would you do it as an overcoat or under coat and mist the grey over top?  Either way its a pretty risky and delicate paint job.  My guess is misting over the top might leave metallic particles/flakes that would be too big / out of scale.  Undercoat might be better but you have to work in both the lighter grey and darker grey without overlap on top.  There are pearlescent pigments that can be added to the base paint/grey (like how they do Star Trek Enterprise aztec paneling).  Maybe I'm just over-thinking it.  The canopy has gold reflective finish too doesn't it?  I'm thinking my F-22 kit might go to the bottom of my pile :(

@derex3592 haha, sound horrible. But no, I only build a hand full of 1/48 kits. Most were WW2 planes and one F-14 I think.

@MechTech no, I like it the hard way. Sanding until the fingers are bleeding.

I hope this is done now. Will test prime that thing tomorrow. Let’s see if it is good now. Then it is time to carve panel lines and make a new canopy.
