Things have been busy here lately! Here are some project updates. We had a Sci-Fi theme this past club meeting, so it was time to complete EVERYTHING with little bits waiting in the wings.

The oldest project was the AV-98 (2), I believe. Finally completed that! I LOVE this kit! Model accuracy with near "action figure" pose-ability.

A couple of building tips to help you with this one. Parts are Styrene and ABS. Superglue works, but could tough to get in small spots. I used Acetone which fused both together great. You might need a little more than standard thin cements. Acetone dries QUICK!

981292026_1-35AV-98(4).jpg.335cd856da790a91afd3e03e7211d095.jpg977944_1-35AV-98(5).jpg.79a9159b4907b1009ef7c2b31f3fce44.jpg

This kit has dry transfers and stickers. When you're careful, the transfers are awesome and look clean - no clear "halo" around decals and no clear coat needed (unless you want to seal it). I left off the clear coat since it could get scratched and look funny over time. You can see the micro power switch and push-button for switching light modes.

The "Remington 870" looking shotgun "chambered for 90mm rounds!" It actually has a pump-action movement!

1167790801_1-35AV-98(7).jpg.863da9e7d857a4acd6b409a750496c7c.jpg

I SUCK at painting figures! The PVC material didn't glue well either with super glue. The bad glue job didn't show up until paint was applied. I found out later that Acetone works on gluing this material too! Isao Ota's eyes came out looking like he was high. So what do you do when you look high (not that'd I know), you wear sunglasses! So I took sprue, shaped it and cut thin slivers to make him sunglasses. Now its harder to tell when he's angry all the time under there.😁

The 1/35th ARMOR Diorama was basically done, but needed a creative label for it. There were pictures posted before of the shell being soldered and lacquered. It took three tries to get this right. Here's the completed label now. "Assault Reconnaissance Mechanized Operations Robot."

The Turbo Spitfire is coming along slowly. LOTS of repainting parts to get a good finish on the name plate (to be shown later). A Zinc Chromate looking undercoating was applied. This will show up with chips and rub marks under the main color later on.

While waiting for paint to dry, I started work on the next base for an upcoming project. It is a sliver of oak cut from a fallen tree. It looked so cool and organic, I knew it would get used one day. Pegs were added to level-out the top of it.

That's it for now. Back to the Spitfire (hopefully this weekend). Thanks for checking in! - MT

LOOKS AWESOME!

UPDATE: trying for epic level on this one:

The explosion on the right side was a little iffy, as it kinda looks like some weird moon rock formation at certain angles. But I wanted more than just a static flight pose; this mech was meant for lunar defense, and that's what I wanted to show here.

Stay tuned... trying to get this one into the "I saw this cool model online" topic...

Hope everyone is having a restful holiday. Just got rid of the family and got a good amount of work in.

Using AK's Medium Gunship Grey and their F15 Grey. The F15 grey has a warmer tone while the GGG has a more teal look to the color. I'm not to happy but, kind of expected the result. The grey just hides me pre-work all to well which is why I went for such a high contrast base effect. Hope the darker post work and washes get it where I want it. Live and learn.

Wow...that just reeks about the paint covering your pre-shading! One possibility could be to take a rag dampened slightly with thinner (or 91% isopropyl alcohol) and gently wiping it across the surface to take a little of the coverage away. I've done that with a few models in the past, with more or less successful results.

This one seems to be intent on giving you grief; I'm hoping you can make it shine!

Close. Thinner is a bit hard to control IMO. It doesn't take much for a wet spot to ruin your streaking. I'll let it be for now until washes are complete. If need be I'll try doing similar to your technique but using sandpaper. Lightly wet sanding away the gray with 600-800g. That should be easier to control and do without the risk. It may not even need it. Just important to keep going and learn from it as the amount of aircraft I enjoy in black and dark grey schemes is too damn many! lol

The Titanic and I HAVEN'T gone down with the ship!! LOL..May has been just the very definition of insane with work and home life. Anywhooo...I have some cool WINS to report...1st off.. the 1st warped POS deck is DOWN and almost completely flat (only it's really slightly curved as the ship is actually curved from bow to stern) I weighted each section down as I went with some of granddads old 22 ammo boxes and just worked my way along the length of the ship with CA glue. It's on so whatever, few spots to putty up but not tooo bad all things considered!  Today I got the 1st side wall of the prominade deck on and used big fat rubber bands and did the same method of working my way down the ship length wise. I also had my 1st encounter with a photoetch stair case!  FUN! ... or not in 1/350 scale, however you wanna look at it. Bending the rails, no problem, easy with my PE bending tool, bending the steps at this scale???...yeeeeh...Whatever, the 1st two are painted and installed. Tomorrow I'm going for the other prominade side wall!  Stay tuned!

Does it count as lying on your workbench if what you're building is essentially.. a bench?

I'm finally taking the dive into building a simulator cockpit for DCS, and planning out the wood I'll need to buy to build the seat.  Figure that's a good starting point, since there are no electronics involved, and I can get my head around the types of wood I'll be using for the rest.

1006372887_ss(2022-05-30at01_26.48).png.a5322f8dd4b0d2175bce438e80bc9709.png

Going to be a big project and take a ton of space, but I'm trying to keep it modular.  The whole thing is going to be roughly 4'x5', and I'm going to be spending some time clearing space in the corner of my office.  Just hoping I can run all the necessary cables across to the PC so I don't need to relocate that.

Happy Memorial Day to all my fellow Americans! Thank you guys for the feedback! Things are coming along slowly but surely!

@pengbuzz Your model and diorama are looking great! I LOVE your effects and adding the missiles in there. It has a nice dynamic and dramatic appeal to it!

@Urashiman Looks like your model is being attacked by "the Pink Blob!"😁

@Rock It's too bad about your work being covered over. I know that feeling. You can still post shade with grays afterward. The cockpit details are looking good!

@derex3592 At $3.24 for a box of .22 ammo, I thought it had to be your grandpa's!😅 Ammo makes a great paper weight! Your deck work and PE work are looking GREAT! That stuff is a paint to work with too.

@Chronocidal That's cool building a simulator cockpit! Let me know if you have trouble with reference photos. We may have the seat you're building at our local museum. There's a nice collection there. - MT

So my 3rd PE staircase came out pretty darn good!  I came up with a better method. However, I have GOT to get some metal primer, the enamel and even Tamiya lacquers just flake right off the brass. I guess that would help??? I primed the PE with normal Tamiya white fine surface primer but same result.   Here's my 3rd PE staircase VS the 70's kit supplied staircase...

It's not your fault @pengbuzz. Just keep turning and burning, it will all turn out alright. Just about as right as your dio, great work!

@derex3592 Lightly sanding the whole fret may help, letting the paint get something to 'bite' on, as it were. Good looking 'case though. And I agree with Pengbuzz, that is from an inflatable bouncy house!

Also, I recommend acetone to clean the fret and remove any residual oils.

After cleaning up the seam lines along the blisters, I finally got the top deck in place. There's some over spray to clean up from the test paint over the seams, but a little thinner on a Q-tip will clean that up.

Sanded back with some rescribing to keep some of the detail a little heavier for the next stages following the gunk wash, gloss, decals, gloss, filter and highlight coats. We on the downhill slide boys!

@Thom Your mods are looking good!

@Rock Your paint looks good, even though you weren't happy with the other coats being hid. One thing, USAF aircraft are kept clean for the most part. Don't get too carried away with the washes. You'll make some crew chiefs upset😁 - MT

Been tinkering around on my VF-9 again. Getting the gunpod size right hard. I've been trying around and checking with reference material, but I think the size it good now.

Also decided on the basic shape of the back landing gear of the VF-9. I tried the F-18 one, with the "bend knees" but it looked horrible. So this is mostly like the standard stuff one would find in a F-14, F-22 or F-35. Any better recommendations are welcome.

SDF-1 project cancelled due to lack of base model/toy to work with. :( At this rate, it'll probably never happen.

Now working on a 1:1 scale model of a depressed Pengbuzz (OOB build).

I wanted to address this past post; who knew that I'd get one just four months later?

Anyways, an update on my 1/3000 Macross: the railguns on the shoulders I scratched up were coming apart, so I did an emergency transplant:

And while I was at it, I did a sludge wash and some drybrushing to bring out the panel lines and details:

And of course, the inevitable Photoshop job involving it:

Pushing myself to get the VF-9 done.

Only little parts left. I scrapped the back gear idea again. It didn't look good. Finally got the form of the engine exhaust/foot right.

@pengbuzz That's why we stay tuned in, you always recover in true style! Lovely Macross and great camera work. Did you hitch a ride on a Falcon and drift the Macross out there for that beauty shot!?

@Urashiman That's some real cool 3D work! Good thing it floats there while the main gear are being fixed.

For me, I've moved onto the superstructure.

The front piece is being kept 'loose' in order to put the 'glass' in after paint. And the pins for the red top of the 'stack' have been hacked to keep that removable until after paint. I'm also fixing the details that were ruined during snipping and sanding.

Yh7Yt7N.jpg

And being replaced with wide styrene strip and then some thinner follow on strips - not yet pictured.

@Urashiman Your rendering is looking line-art accurate! You better hurry, ONLY six months left this year!

@pengbuzz Your SDF-1 looks FANTASTIC Photoshopped with a background! The rail guns look great too!

@Rock That's the kind of pasta I don't like, no flavor to it. Cool idea!😁

@Thom Your work and improvements are helping to add realism to that kit!

@derex3592 In a square dance call: "Everyone prom-i-nade!" They're looking good!

Thank God the weather changed this weekend! The humidity kicked in earlier in the week and all the clear-coating I was going to have to do would have been delayed. Thankfully we got great weekend days where the humidity was low enough to paint!

Painted and clear coated the screws. Here they are masked for "chipping."

TF-49.jpg.727d47b2b07dd45945ac0c63396b845c.jpg

After FOUR long and frustrating tries, I FINALLY got a good decal and the gloss coat to work together! It's the models name plate and an actual shell casing.

TF-50.jpg.9a5f27e111d2516ffdcb3117bc8ece4e.jpg

The base after several coats of clear gloss (which didn't come out glossy). And then several coats of clear satin which DID come out glossy!?!?!?! I'm thinking I over did the chipping. I might hand paint over it to look like "corrosion control" paint. Then it needs a dirty wash of grime.

TF-51.jpg.65863656dc7273f1ba3de9b76d29b4e6.jpg

Don't get frustrated trying to mask a tough shape on your model. Paint a pre-cut piece of decal paper.

TF-52.jpg.45eb10795a15453ea72ef93574b02ddb.jpg

Apply it with some glue over your model.

TF-53.jpg.f58aab372fae36d8c01b586ed6fd1294.jpg

And then trim it! I'll have to redo the black lines around the shark mouth. Sadly, they chipped off when I was applying them. The sealer didn't work very well. Do you think the claws are too much around the cannon?

TF-54.jpg.2a0438d41e46c8e91762515f7be36649.jpg

Last step was to finally glue the props in place. CA sets too fast and might cloud the props. I needed something thin and that would clean up easily. So I used this glue and made a jig to set the blades all at the same angle.

TF-55.jpg.f3148ea6c9a85379b533099b129e072a.jpg

And the props ready to go. Excess cement just rubs off the aluminum hubs. I might put a cannon in the spinner. Someone suggested it in our club.

That's it for now. Thanks for checking in! - MT
