@505thAirborne I am loving that build! It looks like a DX! But without the stupid exploding waist! 🤣

Over here I needed something small and properly engineered to build over a weekend to get the bad taste out of my mouth over the past two years of old kits that don't fit together well..... before I jump back into the Titanic...which was designed in the 70s...LOL

I love this kit.  I have built 2 of them, one lighted and one not.  I found some scale star destroyers on shapeways for scale.  You can see it somewhere in the workbench.

O.O WOW!!! Serious detailing there! Wish my 'cat's cockpit looked that good!

UPDATE: reworked the hinge for the S-foils:

100_0600.JPG.1c42a5b6eb92a0e668255898a20fefd2.JPG 100_0601.JPG.db8e3ab72cf7d2d287b72d9ddec0cd54.JPG 100_0602.JPG.679592bc45a2e28813d2338900e6fb85.JPG

Using a hardwood dowel, I replaced the "plastic peg" that came with the kit. The dowel has a very  slightly larger diameter, so the wings aren't flopping around. I added plastic bulkheads to the inside top of the main body and ground a semicircle into each one (to mimic the lower body's versions). This way, the dowel remains compressed on all sides and provides enough resistance to keep the wings in position, but not crack the joint or bend the plastic.

On that note: I'm going to add sheet styrene to the part of the wing near the hinge on the outer top and bottom (between the hinge and the engine housing) , as that plastic looks way too thin to support much weight for any length of time. I'll trim a little from the wing opening top and bottom on the main body to make up for thew added thickness, but I don't want to have to try gluing a broken wing back on at that junction; it's already a pain with it accessible.

Trying to get in there with the fuselage closed would be a screaming nightmare.

I also cut the rear cover off the back panel and rotated it to match "Red 5" as per the movies:

100_0599.JPG

Planning on redoing the detail in the lower corner of the plate to match Red 5 a bit more closely. I also plan on replacing the laser barrels with dowels that plug into the cannons (for safer transport and repair if needed).

Stay tuned...I'm going in...

Woah, isn't that the kit that put Capt America on the map?  I remember when he was still prototyping it.  It was and still is absolutely epic, can't wait to see the progress on it!

Sorry guys, been kind of a ghost lately because of work, kids, and a new thing going on that I can't really talk about yet, lol!

Anyway, I managed to squeeze in some time with the Excelsior.

Photo dump time

Don't remember if I posted this, but this model... I swear I never got so many cramps with my trigger finger when firing real guns.

IMG_20211013_140103.jpg.7df90fdc0b635a468606af0e53f4f26f.jpg

I didn't even measure the ratio, just eyeballed it because I just didn't care anymore.

IMG_20211013_140110.jpg.eb7ed91ecc0d9d06e18a68a2f01f5b1e.jpg

Looks ok?

IMG_20211012_113610.jpg.313695e8c6b7bf9ff67abe91c0a14291.jpglol, first time painting a pinstripe.  Not that impressive, I know.

IMG_20211014_114424.jpg.d23bce6fdd1bcfc7144f8d2777531bbb.jpg

Saw it in a photo once....are they supposed to be that color?

IMG_20211014_114043.jpg.86f7795ad8951aeb0f4ebec1dc0544ad.jpg

Stripe turned out not horrible.... UNTIL I realized there is supposed to be an even thinner strip that goes with it.

Shaky hands adding detail, lol, don't zoom in.

The nacelles were a huge pain in the butt.  Held entirely together with CA.

Are there decals that go between. The pylon and hull?  I'm beyond caring at this point.

Yeah, Academy's 1/72 F-14A, though being built as a D as all the parts are present for it.

Decals! The decals in that Academy kit are awesome. A little bit of Micro Sol and they bedded right down to all the details. All I did was a gray primer coat, though the screens were painted silver first with either clear smoke or clear green afterward.

Your Red 5 is looking good, with a nice mod for the foils.

@peter Not impressive!? Ae you kidding! I see so many straight lines! That Excelsior is looking great.

@Ignacio Ocamica That is one impressive looking model. And it aint even done yet?

My history with airbrushing primers has never been a good story, I normally default to Tamiya Fine Surfacer Primer in a can, which is absolutely fantastic for almost anything. However, after watching a lot of model airplane guys use Mr Surfacer 1500 Black thinned 1:1ish with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner through an airbrush, I had to try it. I get it now. It's nice! Not cheap!, but nice! Comes in other colors as well...

Really looking the part of a Federation Starship there! I love the pre-shading/ post-shading you did on her; it gives your Excelsior that slightly worn "military" look. 👍 I'm looking forward to seeing this lady with decals applied!

UPDATE: I got a good look at the wing insets on my X-Wing, and found they were wrong:

100special1000.jpg.bd35e348fb92058a556b0de4139d5939.jpg

(Had to borrow a pic from online, as I forgot to take one before I worked on them!)

Here's how they're supposed to look (from MR Replica's photos of the actual screen-used Red-3 filming model):

kg-lucasfilm_archived-red3-reference-013.jpg.e7203800ac9dd381c31c95540fb12a72.jpg

So... I fixed that:

1176911750_100_06031.JPG.965955c100611ba928d4e336a570212a.JPG

The openings were the wrong size, shape and position, so I simply used parts that I removed to fill in the opposite side, and then added styrene to fill in the rest.  A little rescribing of panel lines later and we have progress. Still some remedial sanding to do, but it shouldn't be too bad.

Stay tuned...

Primary painting done on the SSD. 70 degrees and 30% humidity in the garage this morning....Heaven. Didn't break a sweat painting for the first time in a long time. Mixed Tamiya Sky Grey and Flat White for the light grey and Medium Blue and Flat White for the darker sections.

VERY nice super-detailing with the copper wire, silver wire and some bits and sprue! This is one reason I come to the workshop: every time I think of just "doing it OOB", I get my rear-end kicked by folks doing this stuff and I have to up my game! :D

Speaking of which:

I've never added detail to a wheel well, might I might give it a try on my 1/48 VF-1 if I ever get around to it.

Thanks guys! I worked very hard to get it that way! lol

Seriously though, it's good to know that Luke passes muster with the gang here! Just need to dirty his helmet up a bit, then get the canopy on. I decided against putting in the horrifically thick glass in the rear windows of the cockpit and instead used acetate for that task. Meantime, I photocopied decals for the cockpit panels and glued them onto the control panel areas in there.

So now the cockpit is glued into place along with the pilot. Hopefully, this looks more convincing than Ertl's "suggestion" (*cringe*) :

@Ignacio Ocamica Wow that Mospeada is a beast!  Loved it when Moscato was starting it up but it was just too big and rich for me - so glad to see someone tackle it and it looks like its in amazing hands!!! Thanks for sharing - can't wait to see the finish beauty.

@peter What scale is that Excelsior?  That's not the old AMT/Ertl one is it?  I love that design and I built that back in my high school days before all the aztec wallpaper decals were around.  Its still one of my favourite designs (not the model though!)  Looking great!

@derex3592 I have that kit too, you're is looking great, I can't wait to see how you finish it up - have you seen that some crazy people actually have it lit up?!?!  That's just unreal magical wizardry.

@pengbuzz I have that old AMT/Ertl X-Wing as well and I remember how much work it was 20yrs ago to make that look decent.  Bravo, I admire your tenacity and its turning out great.  You definitely have more patience that I.

A little more progress on my F-15C.  As with all G.W.H. kits, there are tons of mistakes in the instructions and even pieces but the surface molding is phenomenal!  Overall the fit is pretty great, but there were the usual problems around the intakes and forward fuselage to main body seam gaps to deal with.  Lots of study with Danny Coreman's book to find the right optional pieces and parts to glue as the instructions were definitely of no help and were all over the place - but to GWH's credit, all the optional bits and pieces were there, you just had to find them and glue them appropriately.  Thanks to @David Hingtgen who put me onto these great KA Models (Korean) 3D resin printed engine nozzles, they are quite spectacular in person at this small scale, I might need to do a little more dry brushing to bring some more details out, but when I first saw the kit's nozzles, they are pretty amazing for styrene at this scale, but they don't compare to the aftermarket ones (although with shipping from Korea it wasn't cheap!)

I've been thinking about the camo pattern as I've always liked the slightly feathered edge but at 1/72 scale, that feathered edge needs to be pretty sharp, but not masking sharp.  When I was younger, I could probably free-hand the airbrush, I used to be able to free-hand an airbrush to look like a pencil line / NOT ANYMORE in my old age.  I decided to take the safe route and scan the pattern and scale it to 1/72 scale.  Then I cut out the pattern and used some Tamiya tape rolled into a tube and lightly placed it on the model so it was 1-2mm above the surface of the plane.  I tried to spray directly down perpendicularly to the mask and that 1-2mm did the trick of softening up the demarcation line (it might be exaggerated at 1/72 scale, but I like it this way that its slightly fuzzy).

finally 'Done" after a month of painting, detailing a bit

1/144 Yellow submarine Mk-II Mac Monster- with designation; 01.

I purchased it with some parts pre-assembled, glued and some lightly broken. there was some light warping on one of the arms from the casting.

I believe in both the cartoon and movies only the ones designated 01 and 02 are seen in the episodes we never see the details of the others; 03,04,05, etc

The Excelsior is 1/1000, and I think it's a retooling of the old one because the saucer and secondary hull have recessed panel lines instead of raised ones.  The nacelles still look like a ribbed condom with the raised panel lines, but I think they are fine enough not to really draw major attention..

That F15 looks amazing, the stencil, wow.  I have a few fighters in my queue, but I've never really ordered aftermarket parts for any of them.  Might consider it those engine nozzles are amazing.
