Soooo close now on the Runabout - gotta fix some paint boo boos around the windows, which I knew 3 months ago was gonna bite me in the butt, but I just kept going, now I'm gonna have to remedy it. After that, it's gonna be time to get it on the stand and have a grand unveiling! Stay tuned!

It feels like it's been forever since I built anything, but at least I have these two on the work bench. 

My sciatica has been bugging me so I can't sit for long periods of time. 

Picked this up at Michael's for $23 with the 30% off coupon. 

The last TOS I built was only 1/2500 scale and it was already packed with more detail than I knew there was on the ship (always just looked like a gray blob to me on the show).  

Got this as a freebie for buying something else that was really big and really dumb, and definitely beyond my abilities to do justice (any guesses?  Lol!). 

Will post pics of that later

Transformers!!!  

 

I love G1 but the new Netflix series is falling a bit short for me. 

I finally got around to building the little Yunagi that came with the 1/1000 Yamato (not the one in the photo).  One of the laziest builds I've ever done.

I forgot where the instructions were but didn't have a lot of problems figuring out how it should go together.  I didn't primer or paint this thing apart from the white bits, and that was just Tamiya white primer.  After that, I just hosed it down with Tamiya Clear from a rattle can, threw the decals on, a bit of Tamiya Panel Line and then Tamiya Flat Clear.

Probably the quickest and laziest builds I've done recently, and it didn't come out looking like a potato.  Also, it might be the only Yamato series model I have that has anything close to anime correct colors. 

Still irks me that it doesn't really scale with any of my Yamato models. 

The Botany Bay is the side ship that reminded me I even had the Yunagi. 

This is just after the gloss, decals and panel lines.

Ok, some work on the Enterprises.  Pepper your angus, this is going to be a *itchfest and a total hate-build. 

Great place for an injection pin, thanks. 

I'm wondering why they decided a seam was needed right down the edges of the pylons. 

Or the secondary hull needed 4 seam lines in a very inconvenient place to fill and sand. 

Or have a seam in a really hard to reach part of the ship. 

Folks, the USS Puttyprise. 

It was nice they gave us so many options, but the numbering and instructions were a bit confusing. 

One of the nacelles needed super human strength to close. 

Snap fit my muscular buttocks. 

I haven't used this much hardware since the 537 Refit. 

More putty

I wasn't even going to bother building the Botany Bay (Kirk should have torpedoed the thing), but decided may as well dig it out while I watch the putty cure. 

Meanwhile I'd been so spoiled by my airbrush, I'd forgotten how thick rattle can paint goes on.... Ended up with some paint drips. 

Back to the Puttyprise and seam lines I can't unsee. 

More putty after the primer. 

And back to the NX.  Tamiya Flat aluminum with some opacity on top of Tamiya white primer comes out like pearl.  I'll have to remember this when I build another Refit. 

More sanding. 

Back to the NX.... Some detail painting. 

Not lighting it but it would look good lit. 

I'm not filling anymore.  I know the seam line is there, but I'm choosing to ignore it, lol! 

OK, back to the NX.... This is going to be another lazy build... Almost no sanding or filling.  I'm hoping my sins will be hidden behind wallpaper Aztec decals, hahahahaha!

After two months I finished the repaint of Altos' VF-25F DX.

Transformation is possible, although you have to be extremely careful as there are a lot of sharp edges which will scratch the paint easily even with several layers of clear coat I've put on. Before painting I sanded down the edges where the wings fold into the fuselage, the area around the hinges of the tail fins and the inner edges of section where the cockpit/nose rotates in. This seems to be enough as I found no wear resulting from the regular transformation process until now. Still, there are issues where you have wear at points were sections are clipped together. At the point where the forward engine section of the legs is attached to the upper fuselage and on the side of the leg section where where the wing section is hooked. On the former one the paint is stripped from the pins that go into the fuselage but this is only visible from the rear in battroid mode and only from certain angles. The latter is only a tiny white scratch of 2-3 mm length. All in all I can live with that, but by now the VF-25F is transformed back into fighter mode and will stay this way for quite while 😉.

Concerning the building process I went through painting relatively smoothly but ran into several issues while applying decals and panel lining. Those third party decals tended to break easily, especially on the edges. My decal softener had almost no effect on them. Panel lining turned out to be even more horrific as my new thinner I intended to use to remove surplus panel line color rather took away the coating and base color instead of the former.

I the end I luckily could fix all these issues and after reassembly of the valk I'm more than happy with the result!

@electric indigo Your FSS stories collection is looking great! I have to watch that anime again. I haven't seen it since the 80's! That paint color and finish on your model is great!

@pengbuzz Those upgrades are sweet! You're collection now has a great place to "hang out" in.

@peter That "Puttyprise" is a sad engineering job! Those seems are big enough for a scale figure to walk through; but you're making it look great!

@CrossAir SUPERB finish on that 25! It's hard to believe looking at the before and after pictures how different it looks. Congrats on getting something that was so tough to paint and decal to hold up. ABS plastic is not fun to work with and can be tough to get paint to adhere to.

I'm starting to get "a-head" on the twins. I added in a spot light for "low tech" use. It's a Gundam nozzle with a foil sticker (save the foil borders from your Gundam stickers) and a custom cut lens from what used to be a ships window to give it that circular pattern. There is STILL A LOT of painting and touch ups needed on these models (to include cleaning fibers from the rag used to wipe excess glue).

Also save the optics from your old cameras and phones. For the top optics glass on the head, I took optics glass from an old camera and got that anti-laser coated look on so many military optics today. The bottom blue optics are cut spare clear pieces with a piece of acrylic mirror inside coated with a blue Sharpie. It has a nice reflection with light like laser designators have.

Also new on the head are the spring cable conduits. They're already a bit weathered so they didn't need any "help".

The decals are also finally picked out from my spares, so that will hopefully get done soon! Thanks for checking in! - MT

Yeah, I'm not big on the "War for Cybertron" versions; I prefer the original G1 myself.

Meantime, your ship work is really something!! I still can't get over the weathering on your Yamato, and your other craft really stand out!

Thanks guys! I'm super proud of this! 11 months! Longest build of my modeling career thus far!  There are a couple of things that still annoy me, but at this point, no one but me would ever notice. It's on the stand as of last night (HUGE shout out to wifey pooh for helping me with THAT little ordeal!)   I just need to solder the wires to the switch/plug and heat shrink it sometime this week when I have time and she'll be ready for pics!

@peterFull painting and panel lining does a lot to a toy indeed. But honestly this one is now rather a model than a toy as you have to be incredible careful while transforming to not chip any paint!

@MechTechThose spring cables and optics look great. And I just recognized the shoulder part where you attached the spot light to - I think I have this on one of my mechs, too 😉. Although in another function.

@derex3592Amazingly rich in detail. I think with a space background this will look super realistic.

Not much going on with the NX apart from gloss clear for now.... Was even too lazy to load the airbrush with Pledge, decided to rattle can it instead. 

As for the TOS, I decided to try something I haven't seen yet.  Trying that splotchy marbled effect on a model devoid of surface detail.  I usually only do this for models with lots of panel lines or one I'm going to cover in decals only.  

Taking a risk here. 

Gradually add more layers. 

OK, so it doesn't look like a total potato. 

Also doing something the screen accurate purists will probably get triggered by.  Added blue to just behind the deflector dish. 

Also added blue to the chillers. Crossing my fingers and hope the end result doesn't look too wierd.

The Botany Bay is totally getting half-@$$ed and just not worth posting a picture of, lol!
