Whats Lying on your Workbench MK IV

Thank you very much guys!

Thom - I didn't post the photo, but the secret to the ejection port cover was to cut/carve it from the end of very thick sprue. The sprue was almost 1/4" thick from an Airfix ship kit. Don't throw away stuff you know you can use. The sprue stayed in my lathe chuck until it was finally cut off. Otherwise, yes, flying all over the shop! That is the backside of masking tape you see keeping it "tied down" to the bench.

Derex - I agree and know what you're talking about! I had the Nichimo Yamato in 1/200 scale. It is ABS so after a little work, I sold it. I had all the gun barrels for it and about two, roughly 11 x 17 PE sheets. It was insane! The kit is older so there were a lot of PE "fixes" for it. PE IS a pain!

Arbit - I have to agree with you. I have made ONE model my whole life in gloss coat! It was my 1/200 Fan jet. The decals were line thin lines and the gloss paint took like a week to cure. I painted a test piece and kept checking it. Everyday I got home from work, I was like, "Are you kidding me, still not dry!?" Tamiya flats all the way! I polish the areas the decals go and then clear/flat coat them. -MT

Why do you guys fear gloss coats?  Tamiya spray can gloss coat TS-13 is all I ever use. Never had an issue whatsoever. Two coats and all is well. Nice and shiny. Easy peasy.

I was able to finish up and snap together the Death Star interior yesterday, not sure how much will be seen, but hey, whatevs! I had an audience yesterday whilst painting...no pressure...

"So MechTech, what did you do this weekend?" Most of my weekend was spent on this tiny part. Third time's a charm. A 10X magnifier was a big help too. That's a #11 X-Acto knife blade and tweezers in the photo.

Lol, that is so tiny, I can't believe the level of detail in such a small piece, wow!

I was just going to paint mine gray and go over the whole thing with Tamiya panel lining, but after seeing yours, I don't think I can in good conscience be lazy now.  Damn you.

@peter -- honestly, yeh, I thought the same thing, but after watching some YT videos and looking at the parts, it just really doesn't work doing it with panel liner. I also tried drybrushing with silver along the edges, that kind of worked..kinda...but you have to put in the work and go in and paint the edges of the parts so they show up from the side. I could have kept going for days, but I wanted to move on. It's tedious to say the least. Had to wear my magnifiers the whole time...

You're right Derex. I'm just mostly military stuff, so not much gloss coating going on. Your paint is looking great! By the way, it looks like you got a great Christmas ornament going on there. It's just the right size. I wonder what the inhabitants of the Death Star think of the giant furry creatures waiting to bat them around the "galaxy."

Thank you Convectuoso and Derex! I thought of cheating and just making it a flap, but realized how much other detail is on the turret. It would look unfinished. - MT

Woke up early this morning  before work and got the outer DS panels painted with some Tamiya light blue mixed with about 1/3 flat white for a good base color. Gloss coated and ready for hand painting other panels at some point....give me strength!

Looking real good.  The time and effort you've spent on the interior makes me wondering if I should crack mine open and add a few highlights to the interior too... (I just panel lined/weathered my "Christmas ornament" ;) )

However, when building mine, that long straight joint from to bottom between the pieces that you've labelled 0 and 5 (or 10 and 15) doesn't sit flush on mine.  I just snap-fit mine together, and I *may* not have correctly assembled the interior.  However, it's something to be aware of (you may need to use glue to get a flush surface).

As it's only visible from the rear, I display the Death Star II as it appeared in the movie—so no one's the wiser.  ;)

Over the past couple days, I found some more time to work on my SV-51. Applied decals but they looked so bright, especially the whites. So I tried toning them down some by brushing a dark filter over top and I think it looks more blended afterwards.

After that, I started adding some paint wear/scuffs like Ivanov's SV-51 had in the anime.

At the same time, I weathered the combination fuel tank/missile launchers, boosters and gunpod. Used the stippling technique with several layers of different colors to make the booster's paint look patchy and uneven. The gunpod barrel was painted a metallic color to match how it looked in the show.

Still need to do the hands and feet. Then put some finishing touches and the final satin or matte clear coat.

Also doing a VF-1S as can be seen in the background of one of the pics. Tried my hand at salt weathering with this one... and I hate it and I will never do it again, but I've already committed so I had to make the best of it. Here's how it is currently. Waiting on additional decals to arrive. I think it looks okay in person, but the salt weathering is too subtle to show all that well on camera. 20200902_031839.jpg.640b4cf88c534599290da8b2113e1fe0.jpg.

Great weathering on the 51! It takes a lot of stamina to work your way over such a large toy.

My Fitter build turns out to be more of an obstacle course, too. Basically, I only need to install the various antennas & stuff, but after finding a photo of a polish Fitter with the bomb rack, I noticed that I need to cut off the pylon that is part of the outer wing fence - kind of adventurous on a finished kit...

Alternatively, I could loose the bombs and install two more drop tanks, which use the pylon.

I also ordered an Aerobonus aftermarket pilot, only to find out that it was apparently sculpted after a lean 10 year old boy, and looks totally lost in the spacious cockpit. Any ideas for an alternative resource?

LOVE IT!!!  Awesome work @MacrossJunkie  Its tough to weather dark planes and you did a fantastic job on that one.  Looks just like the anime and very realistic.  Especially the love the orange tinting to the canopy - really adds to the overall custom.

@electric indigo - phenomenally smooth paint job as always - I wish I can get mine so smooth.  I must try your method of using flat paints (which always goes on smoother and better coverage) and then clear coating for decals.  I try to use glossy paints first for decals as I find I want to try to minimize the layers of paint before I do the Flory Wash for panel details, the clear coat over that for decals.  I'm having a heck of a time with the white belly on my Tomcat at the moment.

Thanks guys! It definitely hasn't been easy. Especially something as large and unwieldy as the 51.  It's a challenge just trying to find places to hold while working on it!

Well you're knocking it out of the park, sir!

Macross Junkie - Your weathering looks terrific! Nice choice of colors and hues of shading too!

Electric Indigo - Don't you hate getting that far and finding out major changes are needed!? Sorry about that. I would not lose those bombs. You did so much great work on them! - MT

Derex - So you decided to not put it off after all? Cool. Yeah, you need to "replicate" a fruit bowl to put on the table!

NZEOD - So how do you like your printer? I'm thinking of getting one someday. - MT
