Another thing bothering me is that the Yamato hands hold badly the VF-25 gunpod... ho well, when such small details are bothering me, this is time to stop tweaking things, otherwise I will end making a whole VF-1 from scratch.

Pretty much been there. Not fun.

UPDATE:

101_1043.thumb.JPG.1b47985dbccc9c85464ef27d3454383e.JPG101_1044.thumb.JPG.154984706b7499a492e18143637870c9.JPG

Right now, it's just in "marker colors" to give me a sense of the placement of the parts and an idea of how it will look when finished. The feet still need some bulking up (they look small) and I still need to refine shapes and add stuff to the font and back of the legs. The "pads" on the feet need to be filled in and hemispherical (working that out now), and I need to start weapons soon.

Overall though, I don't think it's too bad for a 1/72 scratchbuild.

Stay tuned...

The Battle Pod is really coming along. Nice.

Quick question for you model buffs, what scale would I need to get to have a valk in bioroid mode be ~6 inches tall? Need to know for a project.

Here's an opportunity to teach a little model math.

So basically your question would be this:

1/x = 6/499.2 (Battroid height of 41.6 feet x 12 inches per ft according to wikipedia).

6/499.2 = .012

...so

1/x = .012

Solve for "x" and you have your scale:

1 = .012(x)

So, what (x) multiplied by .012 would give you 1?  That will be the "x" in "1/x."  You do that part.  ;)

ok, model scale is 1/x = (wanted height/actual height)

Simple enough, now to hunt down 1/83 scale valks.

I was gonna say go with 1/100. It would be real darn close.

Thinking of it. Might as well get one and see how it compares to what I want to the valk to stand in for. Worst case I have a new model to build and add to my collection.

Finished some detailing. Looks like a duck!

Struggling to mold some tiny clear eye holes for the bridge. Lets see how that works out.

I was wondering if 1/72 be closer instead, but after measuring my 1/72 battroid, it was like 7 and a half inches tall. Guessing perhaps 1/100 would be closer.

Meantime, I found this:

Top half done, bottom half, 95% done.. getting close to final assembly time!

Okay... any day now, ILM should be calling you to ask when you can come in to interview with them! :D

Seriously, that is looking just plain sweet. You really brought out the details in the hull, and those engines look fantastic!

UPDATE: Starting to close in on the finish myself , with the Regult. It may be a little oversized versus a 1/72 valkyrie.

My scale reference:

What I ended up with:

101_1023.thumb.JPG.183d89e8084b06d9fd70d963e128cece.JPG

VF-1J: "Umm... can I go get my gunpod?"

Regult: "Why don't you go get your mommy instead?"

VF-1J: "How about you go get slagged, eh?"

In any event: even if it is too big, better than to be too small and not seem like a threat. Besides... I have Photoshop. :p

Anyways, here's the latest:

101_1069.thumb.JPG.30fa96652d1434728f44bef0bc709faa.JPG

Not much more to do with this one; all that remains really is just final burnishing on the tape surface, minor details in tape, sealing with clearcoat and primer, then final painting.

Stay tuned...

Man, Pengbuzz, the stuff you do with masking tape is just amazing! That pod is coming along very nicely.

Can I suggest revisiting the top guns?  They should be more turret like as one unit.  Yours look a bit too much like the "front" guns, if that makes sense.  I think they're meant to be some form of anti-aircraft guns, possibly even mounted on a swivel turret system so they're one unit (both guns pointing in the same direction, on the same mount).

Actually, after I took that pic, I realized what happened and fixed that! lol

Thankfully, the main head is just styrofoam, so it was only  a matter of drilling a new hole into the main unit and resetting them. Aside from that, I checked the shape on them and they seem about right. Thanks though mickyg! :)

Those Bandai Star Wars kits have a lot of detail.

But my eye is on that gray vf-31!

Well, it still needs some mods (gotta redo part of the top "gun turret" as mickeyg suggested, as well as add/ modify a few other details), but here it is in paints:

Not bad for a ball of masking tape and Styrofoam on a couple of pieces of PVC pipe, huh?

Stay tuned folks...

Wow, and you know what, I am more amazed by the paint details. It looks like the "tatoos" are stickers, or did you paint them ?!

Something I am wondering, if you added in the process the appliance of a white putty layer, you could have clean surfaces and they would be strong enough to be panel lined on top of that. Considering how fast you finish your scratch builds, that should be a small delay in the process

Everything is either painted on or markered in, Xigfrid.

As for putty: I've tried that when i had putty to use, and it doesn't stick very well! It tends to crumble off, so I just go with what I have. After a few dozen more paint applications (I usually end up doing several coats in acrylic, which holds up better!), the surface should be good. Then I'll go in with a pen and paint to do the panel lines.

Thanks for the input; I think you'll be surprised by how this one progresses from here! :)
