Okay, that makes sense....Is Mars inhabited in the "present-day" Macross universe? Or did they decide finding other habitable planets made terraforming too much of a pain?

Yes. In fact, Macross 7's Gamlin Kizaki is a Martian... his personnel file lists him as being from H.G. Wells City, Mars.

Is there a compiled list of all the episodes that featured (not sure if "featured" is the right word) the awful Filipino-quality artwork by AnimeFriend/Star Pro?

Like many others, I recently re-watched the series. After all these years, I'm still floored by how good it is – and how excellent it has held up. It's up there with some of my other favorite viewing experiences like The Godfather, Once Upon A Time In America, Star Wars, Justin Bieber's Never Say Never, etc.

However... coming across episodes like Virgin Road would ruin the seamless experience. Not only was it horribly written, but the artwork/animation was beyond pure sh*t! It didn't look rushed, it looked like someone didn't care. Period.

Sometimes it was hard to catch (as they were mixed in the same episodes, in small portions, or with re-used cells, etc), other times, it was like looking at a Filipino train wreck.

Roll your cursor over the # of episodes where they animated key and in-between scenes and you'll see which episodes they were known to have participated in. That's probably the best you can get.

I was looking for online photos of the Angel Birds demonstration team from SDFM and noticed this reference in the Macross Wiki summary of Episode 1:

http://macross.wikia.com/wiki/Boobytrap

It describes the Angel Birds as being led by Max Jenius and references this photo:

Max_Jenius-1_VF-1A_Valkyrie_Angel_Birds-

I have never thought that was intended to be Max - just another guy who happens to wear glass. It's always been my understanding that he was a new pilot when he was assigned to Hikaru's squadron, and certainly not experienced enough to be leading the demonstration team.

Is this info in the Wiki legitimate, i.e. is it backed up by any other Macross literature? Thanks!

No, that claim on the Wikia is not legitimate... Roy calls up Max and Kakizaki's personnel files before introducing them to Hikaru, and they're both green as hell when they're given their assignment to Skull Squadron's Vermillion Platoon. IIRC they both had less than 200 hours of flight time to their names.

I know this goes a long way back, but does anyone remember the opening credits to Robotech, when it became something not related to the original Macross? I've searched Youtube for what I remember as a teenager and I just can't find what I remember.

I seem to recall seeing some blue flying mecha and that's about as much as I can recall. They weren't VF-1s (at least I don't think they were) and for a while, I thought they were VF-4s. Was it the opening for the shoe-horned Mospaeda final series, maybe? I don't think they were Legioss/Tlead combos flying but I could be wrong.

What I do remember was it being blue, and I could have sworn there were a few onscreen at the same time. And I recall thinking they were beautiful designs. Does anyone have any idea about what it is I'm remembering?

Ah, the mecha you're thinking of is not a VF-4... nor is it even from Macross.

What you're recalling is the Mars Colony AFC-01 Legioss transformable Armo-Fighter from Genesis Climber MOSPEADA, which was adapted to become the so-called "New Generation" of Robotech. The specific model was the AFC-01H Legioss (AKA Eta Legioss) that was used by the show's main character, Mars 21st Battle Company 1st Lt. Stick Bernard.

Thanks Seto. I was aware of what it is, as far as the so called "Alfa/Beta" in the series. However, that lone blue one in the opening credits, just doesn't seem like what I remember from my youth. I'm going to have to assume myemory is in fact flawed though.

Thanks guys!

The opening credits of RT had a mash up of cuts from all three series.

Yeah, I've watched them over and over again the last few days, just to be sure. None of them are as I remember. The copies I watched in my younger days were all VHS and I do remember seeing "the Sentinels" and wondering what on earth had happened. I thought maybe the opening credits there would be different but even those aren't what I remember.

I'm still going to have assume my memory is flawed or the Legioss/Tlead combo is what I remembered. So bizarre that a memory so clear turns out to not be accurate...

I probably should have been more specific; is this legitimate concept art from RT3k, or is it just some Robotech fan being silly. and if it is Legitimate, why does it have a badly rendered VF-2SS SAP?

AFAIK it's legitimate... it's part of a set of concept art done for the series that did the rounds a couple of years back.

One of the other pieces of concept art from that same set labels the VF-2SS knockoff there as a placeholder so they could illustrate various aspects of the "Proteus group" starship, which was to be the main ship in Robotech 3000's godawful excuse for a plot. Presumably they never got as far as a finalized design for an original fighter before overwhelmingly negative reactions to the public screenings of the first teaser trailer got the project canceled.

By the way, is it possible to share zntradi into separate sub-race?

I mean - if the skin color that is pale, dark-skinned and green; if the shape of ears, almost human, and there are elven, etc ...

As far as I am aware, the only way that Zentradi have ever been officially sub-divided based on physical traits is the particular job they were engineered for.

Macross Chronicle Worldguide Sheet 10A classifies them in three groups:

  • General Soldier type - the typical Zentradi soldiers
  • Staff Officer type - the administrators, like Exsedol, who manage fleet records and advise commanders
  • Commander type - the leaders, like Vrlitwhai, who are bigger and tougher than the average Zentradi

I'd guess that the female Zentradi who are engineered to be superior pilots might be a fourth type or a sub-type of the General Soldier.

Episodes 1-2 of Macross 7 mention "Markreis" and a "Shibacris" (or Shibakurisu?) for defense perimeter ships. These names seem to be guesses on the CA subs.

Any idea of what the correct names may be?

I got nothin'... the closest I get when I search the kana version of Markreis redirects me to "Marx" and "Marcus".

By ear it kinda sounds like "makurisu" and "Shibakurisu."

It's probably one of those things that are impossible to figure out, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

My best guess is that it's a place name that has a non-standard romanization... many of the escort detail ships in Macross 7 are named for various locations from Earth, like the carriers Maizuru (a city in Kyoto prefecture, Japan), Mamoi (an alternate spelling of Mawei, a district in Fuzhou, China), Brampton (your guess is as good as mine which one), Aberdeen (in Scotland), or the Bolognese frigate group (named for Bologna, Italy).

When they're not named for places and terrain features like mountains, bays, etc. they're usually named for modern or historical warships, which are much easier to identify... and these names apparently fit neither that I can find.

EDIT: I have two probables for "Makurisu". There are not one but TWO Greek islands that have borne the name Macris/Makris... one is now known as Corfu and is associated with a mythical figure by the same name , the other is now called Icaria. No clues yet for the other one.

  • 2 weeks later...

Someone told me somewhere a long while ago that Zolans can't procreate with Humans is this true or false, but since Michael is thought to be part Zolan and so is Mirage I guess that notion is false?

According to Dynamite 7, no, they can't. According to Frontier, they can.

i think some of the Frontier staff simply failed to check Dynamite thoroughly.
