Wow Chronocidal, I've never seen someone spend so much time trying to conduct a pseudo-intellectual discussion over something so innocuous and harmless. Perhaps you should write a letter to Bandai expressing your displeasure at these kinds of fighter marking sets? And maybe ask them to stick to "realistic" paint schemes like every other VF in the Macross universe. :p

If you look at some of the anniversary and Tiger Meet schemes of real life fighters, it's really not all that unrealistic.

plus space is usually really really dark.

Much like "space is cold" this is a misconception. If you're anywhere close to a star, there will be light. Of course, colony fleets and such could be deep enough in space that there's no significant light sources nearby, but in the neighborhood of colony worlds there would almost always be direct exposure to the local sun, and without any pesky atmosphere getting in the way. Space (in the neighborhood of a sun) only looks dark because there's not much out there reflecting light back at the viewer.

Space is dark. However dark is relative. On planets with atmosphere and in nebula, light is diffused to reflection and excitement of minute particles. This produces a nice all over lighting effect. However in the rest of space (probably 99.99_repeating% volume), there's none of this nice diffusing element. If you are lucky enough to be lit by a local light source, you're either going to be very brightly lit, or in shadow. You can see some of this effect in space shots released by NASA.

Actually space is quite cold. However, because vacuum is a great insulator, if you have excess heat, it's actually difficult to get rid of it, which is rather counter intuitive. Unlike being in an atmosphere where natural air turbulence generated by the heat will help get rid of it, in space you have to find new ways to get rid of excess heat that your machine/body/etc produces.

Anyway, back to normally scheduled viewing...
