Finally saw it. Great movie.

Loved all the fighter scenes, especially the last dogfight because it featured my favorite real world fighter.

Is it strange I was also admiring all those beautiful white landing gears? 🤩

Love the movie. The dogfights were awesome. Love the maneuvers. :good:

I'm imagining somehow how it would look with all those moves and transforming in Gerwalk in-between evasive manuevers. That would be spectacular. I wouldn't mind Tom Cruise piloting a prototype VF-1X in the movie. ;)

Yup, especially the scene when the Su-57 evades their missile! Lol

wasn’t there talk a few years ago about Cruise wanting to make a Yukikaze movie?

By the by, the entire movie is basically available on Youtube now, both officially and in chunks.

I have a feeling that "split throttle" is going to be the next Thing that people latch onto. Watch it become a major game mechanic in the next Ace Combat or go-to trick in the next blockbuster movie, like thrust vectoring and Cobras before it.

So i finally watched the movie last night and loved every second of it! I am just unclear on one thing and i am going to warn you i am very ignorant on the topic...

It seems like there were some of the F-18 that were two-seater aircraft and others that were one-seater...did i miss something or what? How does it work in real life aviation? Are there two versions of the same aircraft? I was so excited while i was watching it that i might have missed something....

Ok so, both the original (Legacy) F/A-18’s (A,B,C,D) and the completely new Super Hornets (Seen in the movie E,F,G) have single and dual seats.

The Single seaters are: A and C for the old legacy Hornets and the E in the Super Hornet.

The movie kind of did a tricky thing for filming to make you think Mav, Rooster, and others where actually piloting the aircraft. All the actors are in the BACK SEAT of an F/A-18F for FILMING while some of their CHARACTERS are supposed to be in the single seat F/A-18E. They did this because from the PERSPECTIVE OF THE CAMERA LOOKING AFT,  the back seat of the 2 seater can pass as the single seater. External shots would then have to filmed using the single seater E without an actor on board, obviously, to represent Mav, Rooster, Hangman or any other single seat pilot. Hope that helps, I added emphasis because for a while people on the internet were convinced that Tom Cruise was actually flying an F/A-18 when he was just in the backseat of a 2 Seat aircraft.

Here is a picture of 3 Single seat E’s and a 2 seat F for comparison

Thank you very much for your explanation, now everything is much more clear. For what it's worth i never thought Tom Cruise was actually piloting the aircraft himself. Not only because i am pretty sure the navy and the military have a very strict policy about that but also because if something would have happened to him(or the aricraft), goodbye Top Gun 2.

So let me ask you another question then...is there a specific reason why they chose to go into the final mission with that particular squadron(some dual-seaters some single-seater)? I mean, the dual-seaters can do things that the single-seater can't and viceversa?

The back seater is a WSO (Weapon System Officer) so while the pilot Flys the plane the WSO can concentrate on targeting. Why the lead single seater dropped instead of the trailing 2 seater which was lazing the target I don’t know. Maybe in case there was a problem with the lead there would still be a few seconds for the 2 seater to drop instead. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Even though it is now on streaming, I still haven't watched it yet. I want to rent it, not 'own' a digital copy for $20 that won't be on my shelf at all. So a few more weeks.

I've seen it once in the theater, but like you, I am going to OWN the 4K BluRay on the release date and try to destroy my home theater speakers in the following weeks... "Honey???...Ummm we now NEED to buy a new Dolby ATMOS receiver and ALL new speakers!!!..." =@

That guy flying the 'cat is NOT Tom Cruise! It's about who's in the 'pit!

Just saw it today, and I loved it. I didn't think I would, as my reminiscence of the first movie is not that good. Generally, I just remember too much hokey-ness. But I loved the action and drama they were spinning out. Esp how Maverick would basically have been done if not for Ice constantly uplifting his career. Real great Kilmer in there too. These 'feelsz' yo! As to those 'feelz' I think not having seen the original in almost thirty years was a good thing, as when Maverick would clearly have his moments of nostalgia, I would remember those scenes too, though not as something I had just seen before this one. Just like the character, I was remembering things from thirty years ago, with that hazy quality that time gives any memory. Really added to the experience, esp with Maverick clearly wanting to settle down now

As to the dog fights, even though there was a measure of unreality to them, they were still exciting and fun to watch. This was clearly aircraft porn! And as to the F-14 fight at the end, though exciting, I think it dragged the movie out a bit. Still glad to see it though!

If they ever decide to continue this with Rooster as the main, I'd be in to see it!

True…though GS is having surprisingly good results with split engine throttling that Maverick used. He is even impressed with the results.

Chris

Yeah, though I think that's something they never would have done on purpose in the original F-14A.  That thrust differential is how you go two-for-two with shoving your RIO through the canopy.
