Are Macross fans as self-hating as Star Wars fans?

Sketch

Recommended Posts

I came across this article the other day, and aside from being funny and biting, I feel it is a fair assessment of the Star Wars fanbase; http://www.jivemagazine.com/column.php?pid=3381

Reading through I couldn't help but draw parallels to Macross fandom, not the casual mecha fans on other boards who generally enjoy the series as a whole, but the caustic and divided hardcore fanbase on macrossworld.

The final remark in particular seems to sum up what I see here;

Maybe I'll put it like this. To be a Star Wars fan, one must possess the ability to see a million different failures and downfalls, and then somehow assemble them into a greater picture of perfection. Every true Star Wars fan is a Luke Skywalker, looking at his twisted, evil father, and somehow seeing good.

My earlier statement needs slight revision. We hate everything about Star Wars.

But the idea of Star Wars…the idea we love.

Thoughts?

Why is it if you like Macross 7 you're some mentally stunted, pedophile homosexual to be pitied for enjoying J-Pop?

Why is it if you hate Macross 7 you're an over-30 American who grew up with Robotech and thinks Macross is SRS BZNS?

Why do fans spend so much time rationalizing what they like and marginalizing those with whom they disagree?

"Do not meddle in the affairs of fanboys, for they are blunt and quick to anger"

Sums it up pretty well, actually. I'm going with March on this one.

The original post was mostly facetious, but parallels can definitely be drawn between the two fandoms. Particularly with the more rabid/obsessive fans.

But that can exist in any kind of fandom, especially since this is the Internet, no matter the subject. It's possible that any fandom can have these kinds of problems as well, not just macrossworld.

I think it's a good point, and a funny one.

If you took the whole of Macrossworld and pulled out something about Macross that each person hated, there would be nothing left. SDFM has inconsistent animation and pacing problems. The last nine episodes were unnecessary. Minmay sucks. Hikaru sucks. Misa sucks (I'm sure SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE must believe that...). DYRL was confusing. FB2012 adds nothing new. MII was a retread. M+ lacked likable characters. M7 has too many problems to list. M0 was too "hippy" and made no sense. Frontier has too much fanservice.

All of this has been mentioned (except Misa sucking) on these boards again and again.

However, the corollary is also true. If you put the whole of Macrossworld together and extracted one thing that everybody loved, you'd cover pretty much everything, including Space Whales, Valks with faces, the Macross getting destroyed by the Mardook, flying rocks, Sheryl chasing after her panties, Kaifun, Basara, and Ranka.

Well, maybe not the Star Pro-created episodes of SDFM...I don't think anyone likes those.

Just like starwars fans who dislike lucas, i dislike Kawamori for the direction in which the new macross series have taken in giving music mystical properties etc.... like in mac 7, zero......

And just like star wars fans who don't like the new prequels, i don't like the new macross series all that much compared to the first, but then i don't like the animation mistakes/quality in the first show.........

But like star trek fans who like Gene's work, its the same for me for Gundam, in which I like tomino's work.............

I like them for the same reason I like low budget porn - so I guess that qualifies as a positive :)

Internet allows you to externalize your hate. You feel you got to share to everyone what you hate about something and the worse part, always repeating it.

I just ignore the parts that I don't like. I don't think too much about them. After all, why remind myself of something I don't like?

The only thing I hate of Macross right now is the lack of more Macross right now...

Yes, yes...apart from drama albums, Macross Chronicle, and Macross Ace, there won't be any Macross for three or four WHOLE MONTHS! <_<

Having sat through both the '87~'92 and '97~'02 dry spells, I have no sympathy whatsoever.

Let's also not forget that too much of a good thing is a bad thing. We don't want Macross to become ingrown and festered like Gundam.

Also... VF-X wasn't very good (lot's of "fly to next destination" to pad the missions.) BUT VF-X2 is the sex! Sure, it's dated (10+ years old), but the game play is quite decent, and the story of the game is very interesting - not least of which is that the player gets to choose the outcome of the events.

Exactly. I've said it before, but one of the things I like about Macross is that the entrie saga is quite long, but completely manageable. Watching a couple of episodes a day, it took me about two months to get through everything.

Even if you only stick to U.C. timeline Gundam, however, it'll take quite a bit longer to get through all of it, and it ain't over yet...

Hmm...it looks fun, but I have no video game system, and I don't really want one. It's not because I don't like video games...quite the reverse. If I got into a game, I'd never leave the house. So I'm, um, game-abstinent...because I actually enjoy having a social life. ^_^

I kind of envy other people who can play them without them taking over their lives, though.

I tend to play them until I beat them, or get bored of them. But I do get obsessed about them while playing. So, the trick is to not get obsessed about games, in general, and limit yourself to one or two titles every 2 years or thereabouts.

- I guess I was lucky, as I was able to get a PS1, and the 3 Macross games released for it, all from used shops, during the run-up to the release of the PS3. It's starting to become nigh impossible to find any PS1 stuff in any "conveniently" located store anymore.

I'm trying to convince the wife to get a PS3, so that I can get the PS2 Macross game AND a BD player. But, she's quite resistant, and is insisting on a standalone player "when the price comes down". So, it looks like no more Macross games for me.

Anyhow, you can get the gist of the game, the mecha lineart and game-stats, as well as an overview of the story in the VF-X2 Special Visual Guide. It's recommended.

Thanks! I'll pick it up.

It's kind of bothersome to have the entire Macross continuum spread across so many different mediums. Comics and books I can deal with, but games? I really wish Macross Chronicle were devoting some time to them...

Macross for me is like pizza. Pepperonni Pizza. Cheap pizza. Expensive pizza. All awesome. I would not expect a cheap $5 pizza to be featured on Top Chef, nor do I expect $5 pizza to be a work of art. But I still love pizza.

With Macross...some of it is gourmet pizza....some of it is $5 pizza, but dammit it's my favorite thing to eat.

So for the next Macross...I hope for gourmet, but I'll still eat the hell out of it if it was the $5 variety.

So I don't have any of this complicated self-hating psychology...I like to keep things simple...

I just like pizza (especially whilst watching Macross)

There were four, though. VFX1+2, DYRL and MacPlus. Which one are you missing (the correct answer should be VF-X1!)?

Hee, hee, hee. I actually forgot about Macross Plus Game Edition.

Yes, have all four.

It's a shame I forgot the M+ game, as it's the most fun - especially because of the player vs. player mode.

Fine, I hate the soda machine robot. Unreliable when you need it the most and annoying every other time.

SODA!!! emot-argh.gif

Just like real life soda vending machines...

Nope. I heard the VF-X 1 and 2 and M3 weren't very good, anyway...

Actually those games weren't that bad at all (For the average Macross/mecha fan at least). Even M3... Btw, u forgot to mention the Macross Scrambled Valkyrie SNES game, the Macross 2036 and Macross Eternal Love Song PC Engine games, the Macross/Macross II/Macross Plus Arcade games, the DYRL PS1/Saturn game, the Macross Plus Game Edition PS1 game and the Macross Valkyrie Overdrive for the Pc...

I'm still waiting for a new Macross Ace Frontier version for the PS2. <_<

Dammit Kawamori!!!

We need more Macross games!!

How about a new VF-X3 game for the PS3/XBOX360/Pc?
