That eva looks too mechanical and weird......it might not be an eva, but something like the artificial mechanical evas (JET SOMETHING? forgot the name). I'm guessing it plays more of a support role than a combat role. Looks too flimsy.

That seems to the whole point behind it.

Because the Angel body (which is what inside the EVA's armor) is supposed to be humanoid right? Unless I'm missing anything here.

Actually EVA are cloned Adam, so yeah they should be humanoid since Adam was humanoid.

You mean the Jet Alone, which is a giant robot made by rival company.

Oh well, this could mean NERV took some advices from them and made an EVA by strapping some mechanical legs/wheels to a crippled Angel body.

I think that NERV had the ability to do whatever it wanted to EVA bodies and be able to repair them later. Don't forget when they blew an arm off Rei's unit to stop ti being taken over by an angel and Asuka's had both arms chopped off by an angel as well as its head and they managed to "repair" it.

Modifying one to run on wheels should be easy by comparison.

I think, re-attachment of limbs seem to be easily done by NERV....but regeneration might not be viable. All limbs that were chopped off were easily replaced, whereas EVA 00's hand got blown off so they couldn't replace it. Like a human body i guess...except re-attachment isn't 100% foolproof for us either.

Boy is Eva-5 WEIRD!

http://ngeekhiong.blogspot.com/2009/05/rev...-and-5-new.html

Don't know about the story but the new designs are getting more "toyetic".

I like the Unit 02's shoulder sheaths.

The 05...could grow on me. I have to see it action first, though.

And I have to ask...what's a "Provisional Unit"?

Eva-00 is the Prototype, -01 is the Test Type, -02 through -04 are Production Models. Is the -05 experimental or somethng...?

Why is it that Eva always gets attacked for commercialism? It seems to me that Bandai has been far more mercenary with Gundam than with Eva.

At least, I don't see Eva coming out with a new TV series every other year just because Bandai needs to sell more toys.

I don't know, but I've seen a lot of merchandising involving Asuka, Rei. and Misato ever since it started. There's probably more figures, statues, etc. for those girls than the Evas.

So...if they were making Lalah or Sayla figures instead of the millionth version of the RX-78-2, then Gundam would get attacked for commercialism?

HHAHHAA! Good one. Now it needs more nipples, a** shots and pantsu.

There's a difference. Bandai has to make new series to sell more toys.

EVA doesn't need no new series. Its just being milked from a single TV series (and now a movie) and the milking doesn't look like its slowing down anytime soon.

So...if there's an unnecessary sequel made, milking is okay, but if there is no unnecessary sequel, it's just greedy.

Gotcha.

It might be commercialism for both but with different priorities; Gundam for the mecha and Eva for the hot girls despite being a mecha show(?). It's working for both though.

And neither of them approach Pokemon levels of crap-producing. And yet everyone seems to act like Eva's the only one committing this sin. Why?

Hmm...that seems too easy.

I *think* it may be due to a lot of mecha-fans' ambivalence or outright hostility towards Eva, especially towards its characters, which (as you say) get the bulk of the merchandising.

But then, the pertinent question for non-fans wouldn't be "Why are they still making all this crap?" but "Why is this half-assed show still popular?"

And THAT'S a question that I've rarely seen asked.

I am not a consumer of products of this "Pokemon" that you mention thus I have no idea of the "crap" its producing. It troubles me that you are part of the target audience though.

In all seriousness though, Pokemon is selling toys to kids that have less purchasing power than young adults and i really have no idea on how its milking is comparable to Eva.

But till the day I see another anime's IP (other than EVA's) being used in everything from canned coffee to pachinko machines, I daresay nothing comes close to EVA.

I worked at Borders bookstore during Pokemon's heyday in the U.S. We were FLOODED with Pokemon stuff, and what we saw wasn't even a large percentage of what was out there.

Hmmm...true. I've never seen Gundam Doritos.

Gundam generally confines itself to toys, models, school notebooks, magazines, comics, books, beach towels, T-shirts, arcade games, home games, cigarette lighters, pens, pencils, pencil cases, jackets, jeans, statues, chess pieces, bedsheets, pachinko machines, and the like. No canned coffee (or tortilla chips).

Yes, very different indeed. :p

I can tell you're attempting sarcasm here, but thinking back, Gundam had condoms didn't they? Not sure if Eva had those but if they did, it had to look like an entry plug.

I don't think the "Gun-doms" were official, fortunately or unfortunately...

I'm not sure who would buy those, though...the only female Gundam fanatic I've ever seen was the heroine of the "Gunota no Onna" comic, and she's fictional...

They would make a good gag gift, though.

(Oh, and I wasn't being COMPLETELY sarcastic...I've seen all of those Gundam products for sale; getting "Gundam Ace" every month REALLY makes you realize just HOW MUCH crap they make for Gundam...)

Point duly noted about Gundam merchandising though.

But consider that Gundam has been around since 1981 and has a coupla sequels up its sleeve whereas EVA has a TV series that started at 1997 which is more recent, thus the more common perception that EVA is solely milking a cash cow because its more obvious.

True, true. (Although the TV show started in '95...and Gundam started in '79, but still, you're right).

I guess what I'm really trying to get at, though, is the hostility I see from a lot of people. Yes, Eva merchandises more than a lot of anime, but that's because it's been more popular than most anime.

The mention of two new Evas for the next movie has brought about a lot of howls about how its all about marketing. Armies of new Gundams and Valkyries, though, are (usually) met warmly. And I still think that's weird.

Personally I like the updated and new designs for...well..most of the remakes/reboots/revisions whatever that are around. If you didn't add something new and different both visually and story wise...well then there wouldn't be much point.

As far as merchandising goes, I'd like to see EVA get more on the robot side to be honest. Finding nice, detailed, high end products of the "mechs" themselves can be kinda tough. I definitely don't care if they make another statue of Rei in her underwear though.

You guys have it all backwards.

There's way TOO LITTLE commercialism in all of this.

Why don't I wake up in the morning, step out onto the street and see girls in cute Ranka Lee outfits with green hair? Why can't I to a restaurant and see the waitresses cosplaying? Why is it that when I walk down the street - chicks dressed as carrots don't jump out at me to tell me carrots love me? Why can't the Metro be colored red and instead of being called "the metro" or "the tube" instead be called "the red commet?"

Why can't my drivers exam also consist of "piloting the car once it has transformed into super robot mode?" Why can't I own a customized mecha? Why doesn't Fire Bomber come sing in my town? Why can't I just walk into the store and BUY oneo of those Miosha academy shirts that Alot wears?

Why don't 15 year old girls get some bottox or silocon injections so they can look like Nanase? Why can't McDonalds sell 1/200 Yamato Macross mecha instead of the crap they usually put in there? Why can't blimps fly over head blaring "What Bout My Star?"

Why can't I go to a movie and trip only to catch a cute girl's ass? Why can't people on stilts routinely walk around town with long flowing robes pretending to be Lord Boldoza and other Zendradi big shots?

I dunno. As far as I'm concerned - this stuff should be marketed a lot more than it is now.

From what I've heard..it's certainly different than the TV series now.

Apparently everyone is just a little bit sane-er. Like apparently Asuka has some outward signs of actually liking Shinji this time around. *gasp*

This comes second hand from translations I saw on 4chan...so...yeah.

Of course...if they are just a little bit more sane...I wonder how much worse everyone will end up getting it in the end?
