Macross Chronicle Translations

DOMO ARIGATOU GOZAIMASU. This translation will be very useful for fans who cant read Japanese like myself. Im taking up Japanese classes starting next month. Ill be helping you guys with future translations projects after I get the hang of it :-)

Keep that optimism as long as you can! Realistically, it takes a couple of years to get the hang of the language...I studied for three before I could make my way through the Area 88 manga (which was the first long thing I successfully read in Japanese).

Oh, and start studying katakana on your own as soon as possible and STICK WITH IT. It's momumentously useful for anime-related stuff, but Japanese classes tend to give it short shrift.

As Gubaba said: it's a life-long learning process and it will take time. That said, it is much more logical and far easier to learn to be able to communicate at a basic level than English is (minimum words needed to converse: 200 Japanese, 400 English).

There is only one proven, successful way of learning a language: a little bit every day. 5 to 15 minutes. Just keep things fresh and circulating in your mind.

Of course, if you're learning at a high school or university it'll be like water thrown at a wall. Most of it will fall off, but some of it will stick.

Depends what kind of course. Japanese studies was my major, so it was one or two hours of Japanese everyday, then hanging out with Japanese exchange students, organising Japanese Society events, and watching Macross and listening to Fukuyama CDs in between. Constant exposure soon gets you thinking in the language. Even if you cannot pick up on everything at first, as soon as your brain is working in Japanese it will help fill in the blanks on its own and will eventually guide you towards what sounds "natural".

Kanji will always, always, be a b**ch, though.

UPDATE: I still haven't finished the Zentradi page, since I've been working on Frontier scripts for Xeros. I'll finish it sometime this week, for sure.

After that, it depends...no matter what, when issue 10 comes out, I'm dropping everything and doing the VF-25 sheet. But if I finish the Zentradi page well before I get issue 10, then I'm either going to start in on one of the History Sheets (probably either the "Bird Human War" or the one about Sharon Apple's concert), or keep plugging away at the Timeline Sheets.

I didn't get as much done during the downtime as I would've liked, alas. But I've started in of the VF-25 sheet. So far (and I'm still on the first page) it's not remarkably different from what's up at the Compendium. In fact, I have a sneaking suspicion that wherever Egan or Azrael (or whoever translated the introductory info on that page) got the information from, the paragraph was also plundered for the Chronicle.

BTW, do they list the Battroid height?

Quickee scanlation of the VF-25 article I did:

New info from Chronicle #10 on the VF-25S

Length: 18.72 m

Height: 4.03 m

Width: 15.50 m

Empty weight: 8,450 Kg

Max G: 27.5+ G

Engine: Shinsei Industry/P&W/RR FF-3001A stage II Thermonuclear Turbine Engine x2

Max thrust in space: 1,620+ kN x2

Max Speed: M5.0+ at 10,000 m

Weapons:

option of: Remmington ES-25A 25mm machine gun / Mauler ROV-25 25 mm beam cannon x2

Mauler ROV-127C 12.7 mm beam machinegun x4

Howard GU-17A new type 58 mm gun pod x1

Energy Conversion SWAG system

Pin Point Barrier System

Active Stealth System

Chaff & Flare & Smoke discharger system

AK/VF-M9 Assault Knife: equipped for use in battroid mode. Gaabaa Otec company. 1.65 m. Stored in the shield block. Super (something, probably the material) and able to be coated with the pin point barrier.

In addition, some groovy stuff from Model Graphix #290 (I'm not sure the canon accuracy of the following):

VF-24 from 2055

VF-25 from 2059

They also have VF-25's with the following squadron paint schemes:

NUNS 25th Long Range Immigrant Fleet

"Macross Frontier" Escort Force

5th Wing 1178 fighter squadron "tricksters"

Shinsei Industries, LTD.

Macross Frontier Arsenal/LAI

Variable Fighters Development 50th Anniversary Marking (and another with "2nd idea" added)

The mag has some other groovy things, such as:

VF-0 "Moth Ball" (yup, a model of a moth balled VF-0!)

S&C Weapons System VF-1QR (a VF-1 with a GU-17A new type gun pod)

Full scratch build of a variable VF-4! Not only is there some new lineart (engine nacelle w/o missiles and landing gear extended (shame that it's a picture of the lineart lying on a table... >.< )), we get a nice rear view, as well as a wicked looking loadout: 2 UUM-7 missile pods mounted between the center fuselage and the engine nacelles, along with 4 RMS-1 missiles on the wings!

In case you're wondering, here's one of the images from the mag:

Fighterrear.jpg

The article even says that the VF-4 has six (6) engines!!! Jet engines, rocket engines and ramjet engines (though I can't figure out where these last ones would be located. Perhaps in the fuselage between the engine nacelles and the center pilot's compartment?) The article also states that the semi-recessed missiles, of which there are 12, are AMM-1 type (same as the VF-1.)

That looks real, real yummy. ^_^

I wish Hasegawa would make one, although I know it'll probably never happen.

Who knows, as it's a full-scratch build, the creator may "garage kit" it, and release it himself! Though, it looks like some to a quite a few parts are taken from VF-1 kits. The article even mentions uses the tips of GU-11 gun pods for the nacelle beam cannons.

Possibly. I haven't really done anything other than a cursory scan for what I can comprehend without having to pull out a kanji dictionary. I'm leaving it to Gubaba, as I've got my own Chronicles translation headache(s).

The one other thing that I noticed is that it mentions the Planet "Messiah" and said planet being the 3rd in a star system (don't have the book in front of me, going by memory as I type.) Which basically is the same as what Azrael posted awhile back in a different thread regarding the development of the VF-25.

Hmm anybody remembers what was written about that planet? I must have missed it.

This was from the DVD/Blu-ray vol. 4 Liner notes:

http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?...st&p=685579

Judging by the info I've seen from a few places, what they said about the VF-25's first test flight seems to make more sense than the VF-25F kit manual. The VF-25F kit manual says the first test was over Eden. The liner notes and Chronicle said it was some system that MF ran across for resources. Official File vol. 2 mentions that Shinsei Industries sent designs for the YF-24 to the fleets. And since both the VF-25 and VF-27 are based on the YF-24, it makes some sense that the first test flight was not done on Eden but was localized to where the Frontier fleet was.

On a slightly related note, there are small paragraphs in the Official File #2 linking the VF-25 and the VF-27 to the YF-24--- individual sections for each VF.

They mention that each one stems from the YF-24.

AK/VF-M9 Assault Knife: equipped for use in battroid mode. Gaabaa Otec company. 1.65 m. Stored in the shield block. Super (something, probably the material) and able to be coated with the pin point barrier.

I like what I've seen of the model but I'd love a scan of that lineart if someone has it.

Can you make a quick translation on the Macross 5 article, I want to know how they explain the City 5 ships when they make landfall in Lux.

One thing I'm learning about Chroncile is that there is no such thing as a "quick" translation of ANYTHING in it, unless you skip a lot of stuff. The Macross 5 article is still eight none-too-short paragraphs of rather dense text.

I may get around to it eventually, but it won't be soon. But if you have a specific question about the page, I'll look and see if I can answer it.

I've skimmed it looking for anything that mentions more than one Battle & City ship in the fleet, and I didn't spot anything. That doesn't mean that it might be there, nor does it mean that what we saw on screen needs to be reconfirmed by text.

The rest of the article states that the fleet is composed of: Macross 5, Battle 5, Neo Noputi baganisi bis, and Stealth Frigate Zentoran type. All are non-quantified.

Also, it's odd that there are none of the other big Super Long Range Emmigration Fleet ships (Factory, Science, Farm, Training, etc.) mentioned. Maybe it'll be clarified in a later sheet.

This is not surprising. The Macross Chronicle failed to mention the Mark Twain when providing a count for the Macross 7 fleet. But we do know at least one Three Star Factory Ship was in the Macross 5 fleet, since it's seen landing along with the rest of the fleet on Rax.

  • 2 weeks later...
Gubaba, sorry to be a pest, but how is the VF-25 article translation coming along?

Graham

Slowly. Last week at work was pretty rough. Thankfully, I now have two weeks off, so I can concentrate on it more fully.

Today, however, is my birthday...so I'm going out to dinner tonight and don't plan to work on the page until tomorrow's hangover subsides. Sorry.

Strangely, grammar seems to be giving me more problems on it that terminology (although that's no picnic, either). There are a number of sections that defy any attempt I can make to render them into readable English.

All that said, I'm nearly done with the first section (which includes all the stats) so I should have it up in 24 hours or less.

Macross Frontier: Citizen Sheet 02A: VF-25S

Pages 1 & 2

Crossing the limits of manned aircraft, HUMANITY'S "MESSIAH" against the Vajra!

Aircraft Introduction

The greatest shackle imposed on manned aircraft is said to be the pilot, but the VF-25 Messiah (used by the Civilian Military Provider SMS) sails past those limitations thanks to several technological breakthroughs. The Extended Gear System, a new type of piloting system, improves both piloting and survival ability by use of the ISC (Inertial Store Converter), popularly known as the "Inertial Buffer," which reduces the effect of Gs in the cockpit. Because of the limits of the pilot's body, it has always been nearly impossible for a fighter to reach its full potential. This problem, as addressed by the AVF Development Project in 2040, has finally been overcome. Moreover, the power output, armaments, sensors, etc. have all been completely integrated, resulting in greatly enhanced performance. Even the VF-171, the primary fighter of the the tail end of the 2050s, lacks teeth in comparison. Keeping with tradition, the S Type is for commanders, and it features more powerful communication systems, as well as an on-board AI equipped with battle tactic command programs for assistance.

Documentation of Use

Using the YF-24 Evolution, jointly designed by Shinsei Industry and General Galaxy, as a base, the VF-25 was created specially by the Shinsei Factory on the Macross Frontier Fleet and the LAI Corporation. Although further developments of the YF-24 exist on other Emigration Fleets, Frontier's VF-25/MF25 is one that can truly be given a new model number. In 2057, the fighter's maiden flight was performed at the orbital base of Messiah025 (the third planet of the M55 System) by the Uraga Class Carrier "Shanghai III." In 2059, testing was conducted by S.M.S. on the Frontier Fleet. That same year, when Frontier encountered the Vajra, Skull Squadron was assembled to try the fighters in actual combat. Of the VF-25 models, the S-Type is the command unit, reserved for high-performance combat operations.

[Picture Caption] The VF-25 is used by Major Ozma Lee of Skull Squadron, which forms the nucleaus of the S.M.S. Wing.

[Picture Caption] Because it is the command type, it is frequently equipped with an Armored Pack (APS-25A/MF25).

Standard Equipment

Mauler ROV-127C 12.7mm Beam Gun

When in Battroid mode, the VF-25's monitor head block is equipped with beam guns. The guns may also be fired in fighter mode, but the aiming range is limited, being used mostly for rear defense. They can also function as a long-range laser communication device. The S-type has four barrels, the G-type has a single barrel, and other types have two.

Howard GU-17A New-Type Gunpod 58mm

The primary armament that has been adopted for the VF-25 is the new type of gatling gunpod manufactured by the Howard Corporation. Compared to the previous gunpods, it is larger, but the design of the front armor plate covering the barrel has evolved in order to increase firing time. Also, it is placed under the body in fighter mode (in the place for an engine nacelle), enabling it to be used by either arm. Later, as the battle against the Vajra continues, it is switched out for the upgraded GU-17V, which is fitted with MDE warheads.

AK/VF-M9 Assault Knife

For close combat operations, the VF-25 is equipped with a Ga-Bar OTEC Company Assault Knife (length: 1.65m, commonly stored in the shield block). Constructed of super-hard alloy, it can be used together with the fighter's pinpoint barrier.

Fighter Mode

The VF-25's fighter form draws from the same well as the VF-1's, in that it uses a blended wing body structure, where the wings fold back after transformation. Also, it can be said to have superior air power ability because, even if it loses its wings, it can still fly at subsonic speeds. In its goal of being the most maneuverable fighter, the VF-25 receives its greatest strength from from the benefit of the ISC Unit (TO21), which reduces the effects of the fighter's ability to maintain its highest acceleration force of 27.5Gs for 120 seconds. As such, it has enough agility to rival even unmanned fighters.

[Picture Caption - Screenshot] Many parts of the fighter's body have high-maneuverability thrusters, with variable nozzles on movable axes. Because of this, the VF-25 has excellent agility.

[Picture Caption - Front view, top caption] In the tip of the nose, there is an integrated Radar AA/AS/SF-06 Unit, and the ISC Unit is built into the avionics bay in front of the cockpit. The ISC Unit, being the most closely-guarded secret of the fighter, is fitted with a self-destruction device.

[Picture Caption - Front view, lower caption] The slits on the front of the fighter's body take in air and can also act as a Boundary Layer Control system, which lightens air resistance on the wings and body.

[Picture Caption - Rear view] The special characteristic of the X-shaped vertical tail and ventral fins is that even if one is lost, the plane can still fly with the remaining three. The rear section of the vertical tail fins also contain various antennae and radar systems.

[Picture Caption - Underside view] The stationary gun mount in the wing joint can be equipped with anything from beam guns to gatling cannons. In addition, the pivot under the wing is provided with three variable pylons for auxiliary weapons systems.

Page 4

Gerwalk Mode

The integrated flight computer loaded onto the VF-25 allows the fighter to be controlled by the Extended Gear. It can gauge the unconscious movement from the nerve impulses in the pilot's muscles, and it can allow the fighter to be controlled by a continuous link to the pilot's thoughts (the concept is similar to to the YF-21's BDI system). Because of the complex operations and aerodynamic control needed to transform even one part of the fighter mentally, there are a number of advantages using only gerwalk mode, especially in cases where mobility is most important.

[Picture Caption - Screenshot of Episode 2: Ozma fighting a Vajra] During close combat with the Vajra, Ozma performed the advanced skill of changing from battroid to gerwalk as an evasive maneuver against a point-blank attack.

[Picture Caption - Screenshot of Episode 2: Ozma being deployed] The characteristic function of gerwalk mode is hovering just above the ground at high speeds, with a greater level of control than fighter mode can provide. Of course the VF-25 can handle this easily.

[Picture Caption - front view] The VF-25's gerwalk form resembles the progenitor of all variable fighters, the VF-1 Valkyrie. But while it has a similar orthodox outer construction, everything on the inside has been massively upgraded, starting with the piloting method.

[Picture Caption - rear view] In full gerwalk mode, the shield on the right arm can be used. The skull marking on the back is Ozma's personal mark.

Battroid Mode

The VF-25 has adopted a newly developed structure for variable fighters, called the Linear Actuator. This is an improvement to the transforming system in which the majority of moving parts are never in contact, but shift electromagnetically. This shortens the necessary time for transformation by two-thirds. Also, many of the more fragile mechanisms have been abandoned, resulting in fewer malfunctions and less maintenance time. This is also connected to an improved durability for the battroid mode. As a result, because the VF-25 battroid has a high capacity for hand-to-hand combat, it has been equipped with the aforementioned assault knife, and has been spotted actively engaging in close-combat operations. In truth, battles against the Vajra are often hand-to-hand, and the two are evenly matched.

[Picture Caption - Ozma vs. Vajra] There have been many cases of pilots getting obsessed with fighting the Vajra, and frequent bouts of hand-to-hand combat (or, as they call it, "wrassling") have been confirmed.

[Picture Caption - Ozma's glowing knife] When it became clear that some weapons had become ineffective against the Vajra, Ozma in his Skull Squadron VF-25 confronted the Vajra alone with only a single assault knife.

[Picture Caption - Battroid Hand] Battroid Hand Parts.

[Picture Caption - Front View (Small] The Vf-25 has not only all the previous defenses, it also employs anti-optical-weapon armor, for a superior, completely integrated defense.

[Picture Caption - Rear View] In battroid mode, the majority of each wing is protected by being folded into the "Wing Grooves" on the back of the torso.

[Picture Caption - Front View (Large)] Also in this mode, since the protection of the cockpit and the avionics (particularly the ISC Unit) is given priority, all of the electronic mechanisms are collected in the cockpit block area, in the frame of the torso.
