What Current Anime Series Are You Watching? v2.0

Oh hey, I found both seasons of the Tower of Druaga on Crunchyroll. Problem (for Australians and New Zealanders) is that you gotta watch all the first season before they take it down in three days. :(

Frontpages aren't episode 1 by the way...

oh it WILL get better. much much better by far. at least watch until ep8 before judging the series. ;)

i now know what you mean... dammit! why didn't anyone warn me about ep8? :(

i only occasionally catch GL in the evenings to unwind with something light, entertaining, funny...

i wasn't expecting it to get serious!

...now i have to properly schedule my viewing hours so i can follow the remainder of the series <grumble, grumble>

I'm onto Ideon since last week: it's rather hard to get into it, mainly because of the old animation and the slow pace of the story but I like it. A lot of elements are similar to Macross: it seems that Ideon was not a source of inspiration for Eva only...

Why? I thought the voice acting in the english dub was phenomenal.

No accounting for taste. :)

Pales in comparison to the original japanese. An almost total miscast in the english dub.

Indeed, but I think Crispin Freeman actually does fit Kyon... sometimes.

Semi-related question: Does it bother you guys when they translate honorifics when dubbing?

I would be hard pressed to name any anime where the English voice acting is better then the Japanese one. Sure, sometimes an individual does a great performance but then just as often gets let down by the co-actors. Voice acting seems to be a side job for actors rather then an actual specialization. Japanese seiyuus recieve years of professional training, same goes for VA's in countries where dubs of foreign shows/movies are common.

Incredible, I found a local channel that's airing Eureka Seven and the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya subtitled!

Eureka Seven airs Sunday at 10:00, playing two consecutive episodes. Haruhi airs at 10 pm.

Too bad I jumped in at episode 23 for Eureka Seven :(

[edit]Sweet, found the site and program guide.

I'll go one step further than that... I don't see how a dubber from another country can ever ever do better than the voice actors from the country that created the show in the first place. The show is voiced by the japanese seiyuus in the way that was truly intended. An english dub may be good (sometimes.... um... rarely... um... never? hehe), but it can never be better than the original, imo.

Only good dub i've seen (only some clips actually...i dun watch dubs if i have a choice) was Cowboy Bebop. I thought that was done quite well.

ToraDora was surprisingly quite good for a tsundere anime. And my favourite girl is Minorin. :3 What a trooper. You go girl!

And also one of the few anime you get to see girls punch and bash each other with furniture. Heck its the best animated catfights i've seen in a long while.

 "Forwarned is seldom forearmed". Even a warning wouldn't be able to prepare you for Ep8. :)

I'd go with that. I've seen the Simpsons in Japanese, German, and Spanish...and while sometimes it's ALMOST as good as the Enlgish version, it never quite gets there.

THAT i'd love to hear. :D but what about "d'oh!"? do they retain the castellaneta's voice for that, or is it also dubbed?

Actually i was pretty impressed with kingdom hearts when i heard the "original" japanese dub for the disney characters. OMG they sound exactly like goofy and donald would but they are speaking in Japanese! I never felt so mind f***ed as i did that time. Hahaha.

Oh, the whole thing was dubbed. I didn't think Flanders or Chief Wiggum sounded very good, but the Simpsons themselves were very well cast.

Funny, though...I don't remember the "D'oh," so it couldn't have been TOO remarkable...

You see, anything related to Disney in anyway (that's including Spirited Away and such) is always an exception :p

I would agree that it is next to impossible to beat the original language track. However there are large differences per country in the quality of voice acting work. The voice acting industry in countries like Japan, France and Germany is strongly developed as a lot of foreign works get dubbed for national television and cinema. The voice actors are professionals who specialise in this type of work. I'm from a country where most foreign works get subbed, dubs are rare and the quality of those dubs is generally low. Same goes for english, voice acting for animation and foreign shows is not a specialisation and it shows in the quality of dubs. I prefer German dubs to Dutch or English ones (although I try to avoid dubs in general but thats a different discussion). Once upon a time....life (or the lesser known O.u.a.t. space) is a nice example to compare the different types of VA work.

Miyazaki for example has received some critism for using normal actors and actresses to do VA work. Those actors are just not as good as real Seiyuus. Disney circumvents the problem by modeling characters to the actor that voices them, giving actors more space. Simpsons, South park, American dad etc are too cultural specific to translate well, I doubt they work in any other language then the original.

A sunfish apparently...which after googling i found out looks kinda odd.

And can grow to be quite huge.

Oh those fish, those things are freakish. Though I had to admire it when I saw an adolescent sunfish at the Long Beach Aquarium, oh do I long to go there someday again...

I didn't catch that Mugi-chan actually said what it was since I was watching it raw...
