Summary of all SDFM/DYRL references in Macross Frontier

Since MF has now been completed (sans the incoming movie), maybe it's time to summarize ALL the little references to SDFM/DYRL/FB2012 that could be found in Macross Frontier - from the most obvious, to the most subtle; from the intended to possibly mere coincidence, let's put it all on the table. i'm sure some of you are embarking on a joint SDFM/MF marathon by now; and as d3v pointed out in another thread, there are some that we could have missed that will only be evident after these marathons.

I'm limiting this to only SDFM/DYRL/FB2012 references, so we can focus. if we open this up to all macross works, it'll be kinda crazy (just with SDFM, there's already SO MANY!), and we'll lose sight of SDFM/DYRL. (not to mention, gubaba will keep screaming Bomba!! )

And i think by now we can objectively (and good naturedly) list these references without having to complain and cry out that "it's all references!! no originality!". That ship has sailed. :p

So, let's do it on a per episode basis:

Ep 1 (Broadcast):

- Of course, the entire prologue (war against the Zentraedi, DYRL scenes, launch of Megaroad1, space colonization project)

- Alto riding the VF25 for the first time as a civilian due to a sudden alien attack, similar to Hikaru riding the VF-1J.

- The VF25 Alto happened to pilot is red-trimmed, similar to Hikaru’s colors.

- Alto shooting his gunpod at the alien, reminiscent of Hikaru firing blindly at the Zentraedi

- Nyan nyan restaurant!

- The red-trimmed VF-1 on top of Mihoshi Academy (could actually be Hikaru's original one, for all we know)

- Skull team! Ozma Lee is the new Roy Focker

- Vermilion team is mentioned as one of the teams initially wiped out by the Vajra

- President Glass sure looks like the mayor in that city in SDFM which houses the macronization chamber which will be stiolen by Kamjin (ok, this is just for kicks. )

- Nyan nyan's mascot Minmeh looks exactly like a Minmay doll. (from hulagu)

- Sheryl's concert being called of due to the Vajra attack just like Minmay's concert was called off due to a Zentraedi attack in DYRL. (from d3v)

-The way the VF-171s position themselves (complete with wing verniers firing for stabilization) as well as how they line up their targets to lock on their missiles is just like the opening battle of DYRL. (from d3v)

Ep 2:

- alto keeps shooting the vajra with his gunpod in gerwalk mode, like Hikaru shooting the Zentraedi in SDFM

- Alto, still in gerwalk, scoops up Ranka with the VF's right hand, similar to the way Hikaru rescued Minmay

- zero-g love! alto's VF's right arm gets shot and separated, ranka falls (this time upwards), alto opens the cockpit to rescue her. Direct reference to Hikaru rescuing Minmay mid-air in SDFM.

- ranka sitting on alto's lap after the rescue, somewhat reminiscent of Minmay sitting on Hikaru's lap in his jet (Hikaru you sly sly dog)

- Sheryl's glasses (while in disguise) looks a lot like Minmay's glasses in DYRL, also while in disguise

- Sheryl's hat (while in disguise) looks a lot like Minmay's hat in SDFM, also while in disguise (from d3v)

Ep 3:

- The way Alto and Ranka would meet on the observatory on the hilltop overlooking the city is reminiscent of how Hikaru and Minmay would meet on a park on a ledge overlooking Macross city inside the SDF-1. (from d3v)

- alto, sheryl and ranka being trapped in a hold, is a nod to Hikaru and Minmay being trapped inside the Macross in both SDFM and DYRL

- maguro buns is a nod to the constant reference of maguro in SDFM/DYRL. in fact, it could be a reference to the fact that in both DYRL and SDFM, Hikaru and Minmay always found a tuna while they were trapped. this time, it just happened to be a tuna bun.

- Cathy Glass' (when she rescued sheryl) suit looks like a curious version of the SDFM flight suit.

- Ozma getting injured with blood in the cockpit felt a bit like focker getting killed (at the time ep3 came out, we had no idea that a more blatant reference to focker's death would still be coming)

- ranka is about to join a miss macross contest!

Ep 4:

- Miranda Merin shares the same family name as Jamis Merin, the actress who lost to Minmay in the original Miss Macross. In a twist, she doesn't get upstaged by the moeblob protagonist and claims the Miss Macross title avenging her ancestor. (from hulagu)

-Alto missing out on the Miss Macross contest because he had to sortie, just like Hikaru (although Alto was at the very least, able to get a seat inside the theatre). (from d3v)

-Just as Alto was launching for his final enlistment test, Bridge Bunny Ram Hoa says "Goodluck Skull-4" with Alto replying the memorable "Thank you" ala Hikaru Ichijyo in DYRL when flight control told him "Goodluck to you" at the start of the movie. (from adrianop)

Ep 5:

- Sheryl's "Atashi to ishou ja, iya?" before her Star Date with Alto, is verbatim Minmay's words to Hikaru just before their date in DYRL. (from hulagu)

Ep 7:

- When Mikhail covers Alto with the Sniper Rifle as Alto is about to go inside the Vajra warship. The scene of Mikhail's VF-25 firing the rifle is similar to the scene in SDFM where we first see Max fight with his preference for battroid modes. (from grss1982)

Ep 8:

Ozma handing in the report to Cathy a bit pissed off, and then calling her a nag... reminiscent of a pissed-off Hikaru submitting his report to Misa, while berating her for being a duty-nag, or something of the sort.

Ep 11:

-Hikaru bails on Misa to go on a date with Minmay. Misa waits for him in vain and feeds the picnic basket to a cute lost puppy. Alto decides to go to Gallia IV with Sheryl instead of meeting with Ranka. Ranka waits for him in vain and feeds his cookies to a cute lost alien larvae (Ai-kun). (from hulagu)

Ep 12:

- The opening scene is a homage to the opening scene of DYRL. Two zentraedi which look a lot like Britai and Exedole. Both of them are speaking in Zentraedi language, in that typical booming voice, the exedole look-alike is giving a report to the commander.

- Exedole look-alike's head/brain also glows, like exedole in DYRL

- Appearance of Temjin, the look-alike/clone of Kamujin.

- Zentraedi uniforms are the same as the zentraedi uniorms in DYRL

- Temjin demands to be given a ship in exchange for the lives of the hostages, including Sheryl the galactic fairy. Exactly what Kamjin did in SDFM.

- Ranka singing while on the backseat of the VF25, as Alto pilots. reminiscent of Hikaru and Minmay around saturn's rings in DYRL.

- Sheryl looking out a balcony/ledge, presumably thinking about alto and ranka being together. Misa does this in SDFM. a lot.

- VF25 crashing, and the passengers seeing some shocking wreckage afterwards. Reminiscent of Hikaru and Misa crashing the VF1, and discovering the wreckage of the Prometheus in DYRL.

- ummm.... WTF-1! nuff said.

- and right after that, another healthy dose of "Ai Oboiteimasuka". really, SK wasn't trolling everyone. suuuure. LOL

- preview for next episode: "first-class generation Macross. Rise of a Legend. Memory of Global". wow, all this remembering the WTF-1 fiasco is giving me headaches. LOL

Ep 13:

- "Memory of GLOBAL". what, the title not enough for you?

- A MACROSS! a friggin original-design MACROSS!!

- The number of the pill (639) that Grace was giving Sheryl is the same number attached to Milla's name (Milla 639) in DYRL.

- Ranka was trapped in some kind of cage/bubble in the Bajra mothership, with alto trying to get in and rescue her. However, a strong blast drives Alto away, thus he was unable to rescue her. Much like what happened in DYRL where Hikaru (and Misa) was trying to rescue Minmay (and Kaifun) before a blast forced Hikaru's VF-1 out

- Sheryl in Michael's VF25, about to take control of the plane from the backseat by grabbing the stick. good thing she didn't; she might have crashed the VF like Misa did.

- The exedole look-alike was blown away, screaming "de-culcha!", similar to how Laplamis died in DYRL

-Alto almost goes out like SDF Kakikazi on Gallia IV, trying to outrun a fold fault. (from hulagu)

Ep 14:

- When Alto shouts "ATTACK" when launching reactions missles. It's a direct reference to Hikaru who also shouted "ATTACK" in when luanching nukes in Episode 27, IIRC of SDFM.(from grss1982)

- When Alto prepares to fire at the Queen, it's reminiscent of Hikaru about to take down Bodolza in DYRL. (from grss1982)

-Apale Genki can missile, similar to the beer missile in DYRL (from morpheus)

- Leon scolds Pres. Glass for smoking a cigar, similar to how Shammy always used to scold Cpt. Gloval (and the other dude) about smoking on the bridge. The only difference, Howard at least actually got to smoke his cigar before Leon caught him. (from d3v)

Ep 21:

- Michael's death scene is a visual homage to the aftermath of Max and Millia's fight in the Meltran airlock in DYRL, with a wounded Max looking on the prone defeated giant Millia for the first time, like a mortally wounded Michael looking on the prone giant Klan in the micronization chamber for the last time. (from hulagu)

Ep 23:

- Alto reprimands his squad member for breaking the Valkyrie Pilot Jinx (teasing someone about a woman during operations). Reminiscent of Kakizaki in DYRL. (from mechaban)

-To add to this, the guy later screams a "death scream" very like Kakizaki but instead it was revealed he was actually gawking at Sheryl. (from wolfx)

Ep 25:

- "Watashi no kare wa pilot" sung by Sheryl

- "Ai Oboitemasuka" sung by Ranka and Ranka/Sheryl duet

- Sheryl's stage on Battle Frontier reminiscent of Minmay's stage in DYRL

- Quarter's Macross Attack reminiscent of the original Daedelus Attack in SDFM

- Ranka's "Minmay Slap" on Sheryl, and her immediate reaction after (then she starts off by saying "oboite..."). And the way they float facing each other, reminiscent of Hikaru and Minmay.

- Ranka reaching out to Sheryl, similar to the way Hikaru gave the lyrics to Minmay

- Macross Quarter in battle form after the final battle on the vajra planet, reminiscent of the original Macross landing on earth after SW1

- of course, the original SDF-1 Macross in Macross City. duh. :p

- Alto drilling a hole on the wall with lasers to rescue Ranka, reminiscent of Hikaru using the lasers to rescue Misa

- Alto's VF25 salutes before the final charge, and Sheryl returns the salute, similar to DYRL.

- Alto lining up grace in her sights at the end; similar to Hikaru lining up Bodolza in his sights in DYRL (from taksraven)

- As alto poses to give the final blow to grace, sheryl and ranka's image is behind him, much like Minmay's image behind Hikaru in the end of DYRL (from Tcracker)

- Minmay's picture in Bilrer's ring

- the scene where alto and ranka convince sheryl to sing again could be a nod to allegorical scene at the end of Flashback 2012 where Hikaru hands Minmay back her microphone, Misa holds her by the shoulders like a friend, and a veil drops over Minmay turning restoring color to her life, turning her black mourning clothes into her bright concert costume (from hulagu)

- Wilder's speech about the Vajra not being the true enemy and that grace is the true enemy and then inviting everyone to fight alongside him. Reminiscent of Britai's speech in DYRL.

-Alto was knocked out for a while during the final battle, until he woke up to Ranka singing; much like Hikaru in SW1, waking up to Minmay's singing (from Redwolf).

-Few second into the episode, a Vajra gunship approach Battle Frontier while opening its hull, it was destroyed by Quarter shortly before it could fire, reminiscent of DYRL (from morpheus)

- CF pilot uniforms = DYRL pilot uniforms (Also, the uniforms themselves are a mix of designed from previous series. The striped shoulders are reminiscent of the DYRL and Macross Plus flight suits while the chestpiece would fit more in 7.-d3v)

... a work in progress.

Don't forget the way that Alto lines up Grace in his sights at the end being very similar to Hikaru lining up Bodolza in his sights in DYRL.

Absolutely correct!

While in DYRL, Minmay was projected on the background of Hikaru's VF-1S, we have both Sheryl and Ranka naked astral form (in green and pink) colors standing behing Alto's VF-25F :D

So, let me start with Ep 25 first, since it's the freshest in our heads:

- Alto's VF25 salutes before the final charge, and Sheryl returns the salute, similar to DYRL.

- Alto lining up grace in her sights at the end; similar to Hikaru lining up Bodolza in his sights in DYRL (thanks taksraven!)

- Minmay's picture in Bilrer's ring

- Wilder's speech about the Vajra not being the true enemy and that grace is the true enemy and then inviting everyone to fight alongside him. Reminiscent of Britai's speech in DYRL.

- CF pilot uniforms = DYRL pilot uniforms

... to be continued. :D

The fold network scene between Alto, Ranka and Sheryl where they convince Sheryl to sing again with Ranka curing her restoring colour to Sheryl's costume is similar to the allegorical scene at the end of Flashback 2012 where Hikaru hands Minmay back her microphone, Misa holds her by the shoulders like a friend, and a veil drops over Minmay turning restoring color to her life, turning her black mourning clothes into her bright concert costume.

I personally think that the naked astral forms of Sheryl and Ranka was THE hottest part of the series. Yummy!

You guys forgot the pineapple cake!

And those 2 Zentrans from that hillybilly marine battallion were such Britai/Exedore wannabes! There is that mad Kamjin lookalike too. I can't remember their names.

edit : Ah crap! Its Ep 25 only for now?

Klan flying the VF? Flash to Miria flying a VF instead of her Qrau in the final fight?

Why don't we just make this topic encompass all references?

- When the Ghost V-9s are launched by the Galaxy fleet, everyone pisses their pants. Apparently, the Sharon Apple incident is not only canon, but also well-documented.

- When Luca turns on Program Judah, Luca states that he is, in fact, unleashing the terror that attacked Macross City back in the day.

Don't forget Captain Wilder's announcement to the fleet. "The Vajra our not our enemy! Macross Galaxy, and Grace O'Connor who has hijacked the Vajra queen are our true enemies!", very reminiscent of Vrlitwhai's announcement to the fighting Zentran and Meltran fleets, "We have one enemy, Gorg Bodolza! Defeat him and bring culture back to us!" So much so, I called him delivering that line several weeks before episode 25 aired. B))

damn your avatar. i actually tried to flick the bug off my monitor.:p

hehe. well, i'm taking it one episode at a time. but hey, if anyone is willing to make a list for any particular episode, that would also be great. :)

it also had little jetplanes that grew legs and arms !!!

im not sure if theyre related to the VF-1, but somebody called them VF-25 !!!!

LOL!

the most evident for me from the start was the way Alto's VF-25 comes up to the flight deck just like Hikaru's VF-1J. Also similar color scheme valks and both w/ 2 antennae. Also, when they say "thank you"...

- The trash/streetsweeper robot that ranka accidentally tripped over is basically the same robot in DYRL (from morpheus)

- i'm sure there's also a soda/coffee machine somwhere in this episode

- President Glass sure looks like the mayor in that city in SDFM which houses the macronization chamber which will be stiolen by Kamjin (ok, this is just for kicks. )

what else?

He was till Ranka sang.

Wouldn't you be a little shellshocked if Grace beam spammed you with her Vajra pets.

oh yeah, now that you mention it... :)

i thought you were referring to after he was shot down by brera.

yup, though it was only for a split second, ranka's song may have woken up alto, much like Hikaru woke up to Minmay's singing.

Episode 7:

* When Mikhail covers Alto with the Sniper Rifle as Alto is about to go inside the Vajra warship. The scene of Mikhail's VF-25 firing the rifle is similar to the scene in SDFM where we first see Max fight with his preference for battroid modes.

I posted about it in the MF Episode 7 Thread. :)http://macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?show...st&p=639898

* When Alto prepares to fire at the Queen, it reminded me a lot of Hikaru about to take down Bodolza in DYRL.

Ep. 23 - Alto reprimands his squad member for breaking the Valkyrie Pilot Jinx (teasing someone about a woman during operations). Reminiscent of Kakizaki in DYRL?

Ep. 24 - This one is a bit of a stretch. During Ranka's flashback, while being put in the escape pod and then seeing her reflection in the multifaceted eye of a Vajra, the music is similar to the Sharon Apple concert and makes me think of Sharon's distorted HAL eye.

Of all the references i would've love to see but didn't get was battroid mode shooting down missiles. :(

Guess no one can be as good as Max or Roy. :(

And remember how the Macross Quarter landed down?

It's exactly how the SDF-1 is position on Macross Island, I remember them showing the same viewing angle when it was in the ocean from the T.V show.

Edit: Here we go, hell it would make a nice wallpaper.

Episode 17. -

* Ground crew looking into Ozma's cockpit and presumably noticing blood/damage indicating that he was wounded was almost exactly the same shot as SDF:M when ground crew look into Roy's cockpit. Cathy's subsequent discovery that Ozma was wounded in combat similar to Claudia's discovery that Roy was mortally wounded.

2. Apale Genki can missile (episode 14)

Apale Genki itself being a sub-homage to Macross Zero, where Aries bribed the villagers using the juice as freebies.

Grace using Ranka's holographic image projected over Battle Galaxy, like Sharon Apple did with the SDF-1 in Macross.

Grace's Vajra interface form in the Queen's head is a cross between Sara Nome in the Birdman head and Ivane Gunther's torso embedded inside the head of Gepernitch's Spiritia Black Hole form.

Possibly plot foreshadowing and not a homage at all because Grace said the Bird Human was based on the Vajra, the Vajra Queen head/command node can be removed without killing the Queen.

Michael's death scene is a visual homage to the aftermath of Max and Millia's fight in the Meltran airlock in DYRL, with a wounded Max looking on the prone defeated giant Millia for the first time, like a mortally wounded Michael looking on the prone giant Klan in the micronization chamber for the last time.

Sheryl's "Atashi to ishou ja, iya?" before her Star Date with Alto, is verbatim Minmay's words to Hikaru just before their date in DYRL.

Miranda Merin shares the same family name as Jamis Merin, the actress who lost to Minmay in the original Miss Macross. In a twist, she doesn't get upstaged by the moeblob protagonist and claims the Miss Macross title avenging her ancestor.

The parts of the "Bird Human" movie we saw is scene for scene exactly what happened in the "real" Macross Zero. How the heck did they manage that?

In a non-Macross reference, Leon's public address is patterned after Mobile Suit Gundam's Giren Zabi's speech at Garma's funeral.

When Leon slams the podium and rhetorically asks why the Vajra are attacking them, it cuts away to Grace (who provoked said attacks) elsewhere smirking and answering that it was because they were a nuisance, similar to when Giren asks rhetorically why Garma Zabi died, and it cuts away to Char (who caused said death) in a bar smirking and answering that it was because he was a dumbass kid.

Alto almost goes out like SDF Kakikazi on Gallia IV, trying to outrun a fold fault.

Nyan nyan's mascot Minmeh looks exactly like a Minmay doll.

Hikaru bails on Misa to go on a date with Minmay.

Ozma names all his battle formation orders after Fire Bomber songs.

Ep. 1

-Sheryl's concert being called of due to the Vajra attack just like Minmay's concert was called off due to a Zentraedi attack in DYRL.

Ep. 3 (and multiple episodes afterwards)

-The way Alto and Ranka would meet on the observatory on the hilltop overlooking the city is reminiscent of how Hikaru and Minmay would meet on a park on a ledge overlooking Macross city inside the SDF-1.

Ep. 4

-Alto missing out on the Miss Macross contest because he had to sortie, just like Hikaru (although Alto was at the very least, able to get a seat inside the theatre).

Ep. 25

-The Quarter shooting the Vajra ship as it was about to shoot Battle Frontier at just about point blank range is just like in DYRL where Vrlithwai's ship shoots another Zentraedi ship that was colsing in to fire at the SDF-1 (right before Vrlithwai make's his speech).

Also, are we still sticking to simply original series/DYRL/FB2012 references, or are we adding in references from others - because in the case of the latter, I'm calling Sheryl's "Atashi no uta wo kike!"

thanks! 1st post updated. :)

References from 7, plus and zero are welcome, but i'll only be adding the SDFM/DYRL/FB2012 references to the OP summary. it's long enough already. :p
