2nd to last post. :D

I guess I better change my avatar <_<

I'm sure you'll find something equally Klan-tastic.

I set mine as Michel's VF-25G from the ep.20 eyecatch, I figure it is appropriate and pays homage to his heroic death.

Mine is back to good 'ol Master Chief ... he beats the hell out of any Valk :p.

anyway seeing that they edited back in the earings, does this mean that earing is gonna play a big part in the future?

So.... Sheryl Nome may be related to Sara and Mao after all??

Goddammit, Kawamori!!! Just wonder what he's gonna put into the BD editions of M7 and SDF...

In Mac7: a 14-year-old Ozma rocking out at a Fire Bomber concert.

In SDFM: 1. Mao onboard the Macross, saying, "One day, I'll be a great scientist! And then I can find some chick to give my earrings to!"

2. Roy saying, "Man, if they ever make a clone of me, I want him to be named 'Aegis'."

3. Claudia talking about her cousin Edgar, who died recently from an allergic reaction to plaster after breaking his leg.

In DYRL: A new epilogue showing some movie critic (circa 2031) complaining that the filmmakers couldn't even get the basic facts of recent history straight.

All except the Edgar part. I mean, he was the best character in Macross Zero aside from maybe Roy. I was always more concerned with whether Edgar was going to come out alive than Shin. I'm sure that with his luck he's probably still kicking around in the Macross Frontier timeframe.

I dunno about adding new stuff into already canon material.

Bad idea Kawamori.

I don't see anything wrong with that. At least the addition of the earrings is not as bad as Enterprise writers adding by force the NX-01 into Star Trek timeline. Macross canon has been altered to make more sense in the Macross continuity and not to damage it or even worse destroy it.

Personally, I don't care about M0, but if he touches the old stuff I'm going to Japan just to kick his butt!!! ...

I wouldn't be upset if they fixed the bit in SDFM episode 3 where Focker is taking Hikaru and Minmay up to the Macross and his VF-1S has unaccountably morphed into a VF-1A...

Likewise, I would be quite glad if they edited the Fire Bomber scenes so that it looked like Basara was actually PLAYING his guitar instead of just strumming one chord over and over again.

Can someone post a comparison pic of the scene where they put the earrings in? I never pay attention to details in anime (except for mecha stuff) so I want to make sure.

Dude he's already touched it. The liner notes of the first Frontier OST suggest that there is a TV series about SW1 and Triangular is its theme!

I am expecting BW and Kawamori to be quietly relegating SDFM as a TV series within the Macross continuity, so they can avoid further legal entanglements with the Tatsunoko evil alliance. However I've noticed they've firmly hung on to DYRL (at least the art from it). The contract to produce that movie must have been much more clear than the series was. Hence the conspicuous absence of the TV version of the SDF-1 (thus far) in the Chronicle...

It would also allow them to tweak the history to better harmonize with what has come afterward. No more conflicts between the histories presented in SDFM and Mac Zero for a start.

I hope you're wrong here...

In the Nyan Fro liner notes, it says that the trendy drama about Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay not only has "Triangler" as its theme song, that's also the show's title. I think it was an in-joke, not an indication of future plans.

Similarly, for the Chronicle: DYRL is separated from the other series (and so is MacII), being absent from the Timeline, Technology, and Worldguide sections. The Macross is clearly listed as the DYRL version, but the first Timeline sheet shows the TV version. Likewise, they have the VF-1J, which was only seen for a split-second in DYRL (and not at all in Max, Millia, or Cannon Fodder colors), and the section on Minmay is strictly TV-Version-Only.

If they do have plans to retcon the TV series into "Triangler," I'll be plenty annoyed.

We do know that the tv series as we know it is not the actual events of SW1, remember that Kawamori stated that the "real" SW1 is somewhere between the movie and tv series, and in every series since we've see plenty of evidence of a merged version of those events, right up to and including Frontier.

My only problem with using that quote is that he said that in the late '80s, well before they decided to make DYRL a movie-within-the-series. As such, I'm not sure it's still valid.

Not that any of the designers or animators pay attention to it, of course...

Ok, i understand your loyalty to SK's old statement (he is the hory froating head after all), but as a fan, would you really like your canon to be some non-existent limbo that floats between a series and a movie? wouldn't you really like some closure on the matter? i mean, sure saying that the real truth lies somewhere out there (cue X-files music) is ok, but you can only fence-sit so long until someone really asks you, "so what the frack really happened? tell me or i'll kill you." (yeah, it just so happened that the one asking the question is a deranged psycopath. hehe.). :p

But seriously, what i'm saying is that it's a complete mindjob if you give me a tv series, and a tv movie, and i'm supposed to keep in mind that both of them are not accurately true, but just sort of. if this were non-fiction, i would understand. but this being fiction, i would eventually have to make a personal decision which to take as the "true story". thankfully, in the macross universe it just so happened that a statement was made to make me lean towards one over the other. a quite ingenious one at that. :)

Actually, I'm perfectly fine with the events of SW1 being in that kind of limbo. Sure, I'd love it if they went back and did a great job remaking the events of SW1 in some definitive version, but that's not gonna happen. Given the choice between SDF:M or DYRL I'd rather not choose, since there are things I greatly prefer from each.

Also, it's not simply loyalty to an old statement, and I'd argue that "Not that any of the designers or animators pay attention to it, of course... " is incorrect. We see with our own eyes in Macross 7 and Macross Frontier ample evidence of a merged universe taking bits and pieces from both SDF:M and DYRL, as well as things that occur in neither as presented.

From the liner notes, i always had the impression that the "triangler" show focused solely on the triangle, with minimal mecha porn. to suddenly dismiss the series as a TV drama... i doubt that they could pull off a retcon this big. and besides, that would be like saying that Ben Reilly was the real spiderman all along.

On the other hand, with the earrings, they opened the door to a possible retcon that could have the vajra arriving on earth even before the protoculture did. not saying it's probable, just saying it's a possibility. as far as retcons go, that takes the cake.

I dunno...I'm okay with the ambiguity. In fact, I kind of like it. But then, I liked the TV ending to Evangelion, too...so maybe I'm just weird.

I got that impression, too...mostly because they describe it as a "Trendy Drama," i.e. a love story/soap opera. I doubt it would have been a mecha show....probably bad actors walking around the same sets over and over again, having arguments and sighing a lot.

hehe, but that one i was able to harmonize. tv series inside the mind. movie, actual events. (obviously i liked the TV ending too). in that sense, both of them can be 100% accurate.

i dunno, maybe i just love the TV series (SDFM) too much to think of it as anything other than 100% accurate.

but as they say, once you watch/read a work of fiction, you kind of own the thing anyway. so as to how you perceive the show, to each his own. :)

yeah, probably a drama with lots of crying scenes, sex scenes, hysterical confrontations, numerous slaps, someone getting drunk, someone getting pregnant, an abortion, a quick marriage and an equally quick divorce. think One Tree Hill, with a VF-1 instead of basketball. hehe.

i wonder how Hikaru and Misa reacted when they watched it.

Your next mission (should you choose to accept it):

Try to figure out the relationship between the Escaflowne TV series and movie...
