Hmmm? The Compendium only lists 13 known Megaroads, then the NM class is introduced.

I assumed it meant start of colonization as well, except that the date starts to change with Eden. It too was listed 2012, then counts up as soon as it's fleets launch, along with Earth. It gives the impression of a real time timeline, suggesting that they where all launched in 2012. Something we know isn't true. It just seems confusingly contradictory.

It starts by showing:

Megaroad-01

Megaroad-02

Megaroad-04

Megaroad-06

Megaroad-09

Megaroad-13

Macross-001

Macross-003

Macross-005

Macross-007

M-Frontier

Obviously, this can't be real time, as Eden shows the launch of

M-Galaxy

Macross-006 (M7 lauched before M6 as the prelude depicts, despite launching in 2038, she is the 7th, not the 8th)

Macross-009

Macross-015

Macross-018

Macross-020

Macross-023

?

and at least two, maybe three Macross-017. Either parallel fleets, or a mistake.

Maybe they did combine sister ships into one fleet, explaining the omission of ships. That, or listing close to forty fleets on screen would be too much clutter.

Anyway you slice it though, the prelude is royally messed up in it's presentation thanks to the poorly thought out clock.

And this still doesn't explain where the heck ships like the Global came from outside of, "Hey, lets depict the Macross in an episode and just claim she's a sister ship" Maybe there were 17 Macross class ships built alongside the Megaroads. I haven't watched all of M7, so where are you getting the info on M1 and M5?

It could be that "colonial expedition" might not just refer to colony ships but also to research ships like the Global. if so, then M7 could still be the 37th, despite being the 7th in her class, and the 20th overall.

Either that, or Megaroad 14-30 sure weren't worth mentioning.

Heh, I came in here wondering about a lone vessel, now I wonder about whole fleets. Nice one, Kawamori. Only fans wonder about ten seconds of throwaway back story. ^_^

Don't forget that there are two types of emmigration fleet: long range, and short range (less than 100 light years from Earth.) <- this info's in the compendium. One such fleet found and colonized Eden (being within 100 light years...)

It's highly probable that the SDF-1 lookalike ships were originally used as the flagships of these short range emmigration fleets. Once the majority of colonizeable planets were found in this "short range" zone, some of the SDF type ships may have been transferred to flagship other fleets, such as the one that the Varuta blew up real good.

Another thing to consider is that we have never seen a New Macross Class ship operating for any length of time away from a City ship (aside from the one in VF-X2, but as that was just launched from the Factory Satellite...) Therefore, it is possible that SDF class ships are used because they are capable of operating for extended periods of time independent of support from other ships.

One way to blow the whistle is Ohgathwai and a portion of the 33rd Marines surviving, confirming there was no Galaxy survivor on Galia 4.

Also if Temzin survived and blabed about Grace.

I really really hope that happens to be the case eventually... ^_^

(Need more classic Zentradi action!!!)

Ah, so you're saying that it could be that they didn't list short range fleets (except Megaroad-004, which found Eden according to the prologue). That makes some sense. I'm still getting used to the Compendium's new layout.

According to it, there's a whopping eleven year gap between the Megaroad-13, the supposed last in the line, and the M1.

Besides if ain't broke why scrap it? That there is Zentradi philosophy on equipment.

Well, if you do consider that the Macross class is based on a reconditioned Supervision Army gunboat, and if those things were as durable as their Zentraedi counterparts, then you've fot a design that can last a few decades (not to mention a few hundred thousand years).

Trust me, I know well about the Megaroad/Megalord. It doesn't surprise me that the UN Spacy would be able to produce MP Macross' either. What does surprise me was that they're apparently still in use, and postdate the Megaroad-01.

Why would that be odd at all? The Megaroad class are colony ships, the first generation Macross class are gunships. Would the navy stop building, and immediately retire, their main class of battleship just because someone came up with a new trans-atlantic liner?

All the little recaps about the colonization process list MR-01 as the forebearer. It just strikes me as odd that a mass production version wouldn't be based on the Megaroad, or the New Macross-class in M7. it would be like them building new B-17s for the air force (which would be awesome, however unlikely). I'm basing it off the M7 recap, but it seems to imply there were only two classes of colony ship, the original Megaroad class, and it successor, the New Macross class. This ship looks like the original Macross, neither MR nor NM. Unless you mean the Battle 7 was different from the New Macross class.

Maybe Macross classes were cheaper to build and used for smaller expeditions. 117 was a research mission after all. It just seems strange that such an antiquated design is still in use, given the evolution of the colony ships as detailed at the start of M7, and Frontiers even more modern style (Macross Quarter).

Ah, here's the problem. You're confusing the battleships with the colony ships. New Macross Class ships are actually two ships. The Battle ship and the Colony ship. The Megaroad was all colony ship. It wasn't meant to go into battle. I could easily see them continuing to construct what was, at the time, Earth's only long range battleship design to accompany colony missions.

You also have to remember, we're talking galactic colonization here. If a fleet leaves Earth when those are still the ships of the line (and actually, you also have to remember that the design of the mass produced Macross ships are based on the SDF-1 refit, which was not completed until shortly after the Megaroad 01 launch, which in a sense means that this design post-dates the Megaroad) they're not likely to be swapping out all their ships the moment something new comes along. That's just not feasible.

Also, because it seems to have reared it's ugly head in this thread, I'd like to remind everyone that the magical explosion of colony fleets seen from Earth and Eden are shown that way solely for dramatic effect. Megaroad 1, Macross 7, and Frontier did not all launch the same year. The visual effect just looked really cool and they needed it to fit into a very short time frame, that is the entire explanation.

I suppose so. Maybe it's the lack of mention of a mass produced Macross beforehand that throws me off. You'd just think they wouldn't be in service either given the number of new fighters already. That, and it's sort of portrayed as a colony ship for research expeditions. So pardon my confusion. Megaroads always struck me more as escorts of island ships like we see with the New Macross.

I also get the dramatic effect thing (I know full well they were launched then), but it still could've been done better.

Thanks for the imput, but please take a chill pill.

Megaroad class ships are colony ships; they have a city inside of them. It is a class of ship that needs escorts, and should never be taken into battle.

For a colourized (and larger) image: http://www.new-un-spacy.com/flashback2012/.../megaroad01.gif

It's hard to get a sense of scale with the image - so consider the things near the lower rear as being similar in size to an ARMD you'll get an approximate idea.

I guess you haven't seen Flashback 2012, because just like you, I once thought the Megaroad-01 is not really big, until I saw that particular ship in FB 2012. In comparison, Macross looks like a dwarf. :)

To give you the hard data, Megaroad-01 is as big as, if not bigger, than the City 7 section of Macross 7. City 7 is about 5000 meter, and Megaroad-01 is approximately 5000+ meter.

Only in terms of length but in terms of width, height and area a NMC city block is bigger than a Megaroad.

You know, I was a bit mad at Nanase for how she treated Luca. I mean, she's a complete airhead!! She has absolutely NO idea that he's interested in her even though it's been obvious for some time. Yet she consistently seems to have no clue. <_<

I fail to see how that makes me appear like I haven't seen FB2012, nor thinking the MR1 small. I've seen it multiple times actually, and am aware how big the ship is.

I was merely saying I never thought of them as not being able to hold their own.

Yeah, sorry if I offend you somehow. :)

Just like others have said before, Megaroad-01 is a colonization ship, not a warship. I guess that's why they bring along the Nupetiet-Vergnitzs when launching Megaroad-01, to add up the firepower needed if they ever encounter another Zentradi fleet.

I liked episode 15. A little clipshow action and then some Alto - Ranka - Sheryl development. The Ranka Sheryl duet was a nice touch. A nice pick up from episode 14, which I thought was a bit lackluster. This episode confirms my suspicions of Sheryl being a "manufactured" pop icon (literally and figuratively). Hmm, maybe Leon, Grace, et el are the Protoculture and after all these millennium are trying to take over the cosmos once again.

I really enjoyed this episode. The little sing off great. Alto's expression was priceless. I liked how Ozma had put the skull design on top of his Lancia.

The YF-24 was a nice design even from the limited view the gave.

And to think a few episodes ago some people thought the idea of a Macross Class vessel that wasn't the Macross was crazy.

I know what you mean about Nanase, MisaForever. I guess she's too wrapped up in her little world of Ranka worship. I have a feeling she will eventually make some Pineapple Salad for Alto for "good luck" and to show "no hard feelings" about him possibly pursuing Ranka...

To come to Nanase defense, I don't think it's because she's clueless. She probably sees Luca as just a friend and not a potential boyfriend. Plus, given the fact that he has not exactly come across as the most manly of the trio (Alto, Michael,

Luca), it places him in the "sidekick" role. Nanase's concern about Luca being able to handle combat without Alto and Michael seem to show more of a sisterly concern; perhaps she views him as a little brother. If Luca want to get anywhere with Nanase, then he'd better tell her how he feels, and fast before the steak and pineapple gets past around!! B))

Yes he also better starts wearing pants instead of shorts, no lady is going to date you if you are always wearing a pair of shorts

I can't really blame Nanase for being clueless when we have that sterling example of cluelessness known as Hikaru Ichijo!

Misa was only letting herself into his home to make the bed and clean the place up, and he STILL didn't completely get it until one of the bridge bunnies flat out told him!

it wasn't so much that Hikaru was clueless, than the fact that was too hung up on Minmei, thus he really didn't pay that much attention to other people hinting at their feelings for him... so he can't be compared to much to nana-- waitaminute. nanase is also too hung up on someone... ranka! and ranka just happens to be the newest idol of the macross fleet! :o

ladies and gentlemen, the new Hikaru Ichijo... Nanase!! :D

Sweet...

Actually, didn't she say that she has a thing for Alto as well? That's another strike against poor lil Luca.

Nah she didn't, that would be a blow to her friendship with Ranka. In fact, I think at one time Nanase was cautioning the development of Alto's relationship with Sheryl.

At least Cathy is an homage to Misa. Perhaps you consider yourself multi-generational in your Macross women. You have one for each series... but wait, Klan and Cathy are in the same series. Now I know you aren't planning on a threesome between you, Cathy, and macro Klan are you?

MACRO klan? hehe. as austin powers would say, the sheer physics of it is mind-boggling. :p

but, hey, i'll leave it to misaforsakenandtiedup's imagination, i'm sure he's already thought of something.
