Macross Frontier music

Recommended Posts

Lion is definitely growing on me. I suppose it is one that I had to hear a couple times to really dig it. Northern Cross is still win in my book though.

More importantly, any word on Ranka's new song in Episode 19? Title, possible release, etc? That one seemed to (pleasantly) come out of the blue.

Edit: Quick check on http://gabrielarobin.com/ says it's Anata No Oto and has what little we know about it...

Am I really one of the few who actually prefers May'n's version of "What 'Bout My Star?" over Megumi's? All I keep reading about is how Ranka's version is preferred over Sheryl's version. Bleh. I don't know about the rest of you, but out of "What 'Bout My Star?," "Diamond Crevasse," "9PM at Sagittarius! Don't be late!," "Triangler," and "Aimo"...I just can't seem to get enough of Sheryl's version of "What 'Bout My Star?" I listen to Sheryl's version of that song (on a regular basis) more so than I do any of the other songs. Not saying that the other tracks aren't great...cause they are! ...But I digress....

This is how I rank the vocal tracks thus far:

  1. What 'Bout My Star? - May'n
  2. Aimo
  3. Diamond Crevasse
  4. 9PM at Sagittarius! Don't be late!
  5. What 'Bout My Star? - Megumi
  6. Triangler

As for the BGM...I'm waiting for more track listings. I cannot wait for the rest of the BGM tracks to be released on CD!!!

As for Yoko Kanno. As others have stated, I too believe she deserves some credit! Despite the said similarities in that one YouTube video, she still does amazing work! Yoko Kanno comes in a close second, behind Shiro Sagisu, as far as my favorite composers are concerned.

Also, as Gubaba mentioned...Macross is very fortunate to have the composers and artists it has had...which I am very thankful for as well. Hell, if it weren't for some of the music found in Macross...my love of Macross would probably be to a lesser degree.

As someone else also mentioned...IT'S A GREAT TIME TO BE A MACROSS FAN! ...If only the SDF would actually crash land on earth.... =(

My intuition says that the Ranka version had more effort put into its construction, and then the song was "reverse-engineered" into a Sheryl song. There's simply more going on musically in the Ranka version (of course, more is not necessarily better) with all those "Baba O'Riley" synthesizer burbles and guitar riffs coming in where you least expect them. I like the Ranka version better, but I think there's a case for the Sheryl version as well.

At this point, I pretty much have almost every Macross-related album, either physically on CD or in mp3 form. I made a huge, 36-hour playlist of all of it on iTunes, and there are only two albums that I genuinely dislike (Live Fire and English Fire). The rest of it, ALL of it, ranges from good to great. Of course, I'm sure some of it is merely passable, and I like it solely because of its connection to a show that I love, but still...Macross has benefitted from A LOT of remarkably talented muscians over the years.

As someone else also mentioned...IT'S A GREAT TIME TO BE A MACROSS FAN! ...If only the SDF would actually crash land on earth.... =(

Hey...ten years late is better than never. But if it DOES crash here, I'm moving to Atalia Island and reserving my seat on board the ship early.

I hate Sheryl's "What 'bout my Star?". All synthesizer and drums.

Same here, Ranka version is better, however her version Diamond Crevasse is just went off, Sheryl is better for this one. I think there are several song that is suitable for each of them.

IMO, Sheryl voice is similliar like Basara while Ranka's is Minmay.

BTW, is there a Sheryl version of "Ninjin loves you"? ^_^

And where can one find a decent recording of the GARby version of it? The youtube version's audio quality SUCKS, and I'm actually willing to pay for that song and Sheryl's enka (I would have done that already - if the announcement of it on the Macross F webpage had a link for the japanese impaired to go straight to wherever they have to go to leave their credit card number <_< )

I wish I knew. I figure it's gotta turn up eventually, though...right?

The one Macross OST I didn't like was Macross Zero. As a matter of fact, there's not much I liked about M0 except the mecha fighting and that the plot sets us up for Frontier.

On the subject of track rankings as mentioned by Kronnang Dunn, here's mine:

My Top Frontier Vocal Tracks Ranking

1) Northern Cross

2) Infinity

3) What 'Bout My Star @ Folmo

4) Sagittarius 9pm Don't Be Late

5) Interstellar Flight (SO CUTE!!!)

6) Lion

7) Diamond Crevasse

8) Welcome to My Fanclub's Night

9) Triangler

10) What 'Bout My Star

My Top Macross Vocal Tracks:

1) After In the Dark

2) Angel Voice

3) Northern Cross

4) Tenshi No Enogu

5) Mou Ichido Love You

6) New Frontier

7) Watashi No Kare Wa Pilot (Minmay, Mylene, or Ranka ver)

8) Infinity

9) Information High

10) Ai Oboete Imasu Ka

Honorable Mention for topping the Galaxy Network in 2 alternate realities: Soko Ni Aru No Ga Mirai Da Kara

My top Macross Instrumental Tracks:

1) Dogfight - the song by which all other BGM is measured by

2) Fly Up In the Air

3) Takeoff

4) Breakout

5) Vital Force

I may throw the generic SDF:M guitar and horns BGM that's also used in the next episode previews there as well.

Not as comprehensive of a list because the BGM of the original and movie weren't that well defined, M2 BGM was sort of forgetable in comparison to it's vocal tracks, M7 had no true BGM - just a handful of Galaxy Net instrumental songs, the game level songs were little more than chiptunes, and M0 was about 13 different kinds of fail. It really just leaves M+ and MF.

U gotta be kidding me... ARKAN (part 1 above all) was a beautiful track!!!

Arkan hurts my ears. I'm very glad it was replaced with Aimo Tori No Hito in the Frontier version. And I wasn't on board with Aimo until around that episode.

I think the BGM for M0 really fits the animation, but it wasn't enough that I ever wanted it on my iPod to listen to on it's own. It very well could be that I was so turned off by the anime that I had negative association with the music.

Could be.

I think the Zero music is excellent. I especially like how the BGM seems Pacific Island-y and Macross-y at the same time. And "Yanyan" is a seriously underrated Macross song.

Still, I completely agree with you that "Dogfight" is the standard by which all others are judged. Well, that and the original SDFM eyecatch "Dudl-ludun, DUN DUN Dudl-ludun" music...which I'm rather surprised has never popped up on any other Macross soundtrack.

(Y'know, it's actually really difficult to find a verbal approximation for that fragment of BGM...)

MF so far have covered music/song from SDF:M and M7, I wonder if we get more homage from M:Plus or M:II. IIRC several M:II song are used in M7, the Jamming Birds squad are singing Wendy's "Riding My Valkyrie" and there's a music group on a casino ship which are singing "Banana Moon Love".

I don't think this has been mentioned yet...we have a title for O.S.T. 2: "Nyan Tora."

EDIT: I'm guessing the "Tora" is short for "Triangle," but I could be wrong...

Nyan Toransuformation? Nyan Toraburu? Is it Tora as in "Tiger" ? ^_^

Can't wait for the track listing. I hope its an entirely different than OST. 1.

Tora can also mean "torpedo attack", so mayhap this is Nyan Tora, is cat attack or mean the RANKA ATTACK! ^_^

Diamond Crevasse always has been my favorite, but the version in episode 20 is outstanding

Was it really a different version, or just the same Diamond Crevasse with different track mixing? Kind of like the one version of Don't Be Late that played when Sheryl flew the VF-25 or in the previews for All That VF.

It sounded mostly like it was a mixed track. Without instruments at first, then slowly bringing them in. M7 did this with a few of their songs where the vocals were the same but the instruments were removed from the song.

Actually, the vocals themselves for the new Diamond Crevasse were re-recorded, listen to how she curls some of the phrases to achieve a more dramatic effect, like in "mou nido to...", and the instruments are partly different (original didn't have a plucked acoustic guitar).

Regardless, new Diamond Crevice needs to be on OST 2, he'll I'd like that battle version of Sagitarious too, espeicially since they're likely going to dump battle aimo on us.

I actually just picked up OST 1 last week, along with Fukuyama Fire, & the Lion single. Don't know w hy I waited so long, but that error has been corrected. I've wanted Welcome To My Fanclub's Night since the clipshow episode.

I'm more curious as to why you waited so long to pick up Fukuyama Fire...it's better than the original Fire Bomber stuff, IMHO. Gift 25 is pretty awesome, too.

According to (Mainichi News, Lion has appeared in 3rd place on the Oricon charts, with more than 56,000 copies sold.

It also states that all 4 of the Macross F CDs have debuted within the top 5 spots, and the reporter is calling it a

Cheers to the music team behind MF! ^_^

It's usually not in stock at CDjapan when I'm ordering something, so I usually pass on it. But since I was pre-ording Lion, I figured they'd stock it before that shipped, and viola., and yes it is an awesome album, though I do still like the Radio Zola version of Starlight Dream better.

Agreed. I also like Dynamite Explosion better without the Humming Bird extended intro, but the one thing that I never liked about Fire Bomber was the glossy production. Fukuyama Fire sounds much less "produced" (and Fukuyama himself sounds like he's about to tear your throat out with his teeth), which I think makes it heaps better as a rock album.

But then, most of my favorite albums sound like they were recorded in two days in an abandoned warehouse somewhere...
