I just love the comedy in this episode, all brilliantly timed. From Sheryl screaming for her underwear just before the door slides shut to Cathy immediatly checking for wrinkles after Ozma's comment and Sheryl's laundry method of just tossing in the whole box of detergent.

Btw, is it just me mis-hearing the music track or did the little green limbless creature squeeked in dispair when it lost Sheryl's underwear on the roof?

And isn't anyone worried that there's a giant unattended blue winged cat that's sleeping round the Folmo mall at the start? What if it starts chewing microns?

So we now have Sheryl wanting to join the pilot training part of the school... so are we going to get some weird song bird squad? Then again with Sheryl's temper she take out a whole swarm of Vajra if they accidently float past her panties. I am also starting to wonder if the carbuncle is actually Ranka's pet, all of this still tying into those repressed memories.

A light hearted and fancyfree episode to help bring us down from the Mecha porn of last episode. I had fun with the episode, the humor was well done, very slapstick with Sheryl slamming into the walls left and right. Everything involving Luca had me chuckling as well. Ranka has me rooting for her, I'm always a sucker for the underdog :D I didn't think mystery boy would appear so soon, but here he is with his harmonica. Looks like we also get a Gubaba type in the the green squirrel thing that took Sheryl's panties, another plus.

Nice touch making the VF-1 on the roof of the school 011 a la Hikaru's VF-1A in DYRL.

I would imagine it would be easier just to paint any old VF-1A in Skull 011 colors rather than get the offcial movie prop, but you never know...

I hope they have some kind of conversation about it at some point...

Student A: What kind of fighter IS that?

Student B: Some old plane from some movie that my dad likes...it was on TV the other night and he tried to get me to watch it, but it was too boring. And racist, too: the Zentradi were the bad guys! That's SO '20s!

What did Leon mean when he said V-TYPE INFECTION? Why were the Dulfim crew members quarantined...?

The Vajra are xenomorphs. Ranka has a chestburster stuck in her.

On a more serious note, I don't expect that we'll find until maybe the next action episode, which seems to be a fair bit away.

Sheryl is going to learn how to fly a valk, AND sing? It's Basara all over again, noooooooooooo!

Ozma would probably be cool with it.

(And to think, we all figured that her shout of "Atashi no uta o kike!" was merely a cute joke, when actually, it was foreshadowing...)

Whether or not this actually happens in the series, I would love to see one of the customizers here do a "Sheryl Custom" VF-25 when the toys come out B))

Heh, if Ozma finds out, he'd probably go out of his way to buy Ranka a bass guitar, Klan a drum set and a keytar for himself.

Most likely something attached to the Vajra if they are biomech could be they have a parasite of some sort.

Well the next episode seems like an action on so it doesn't seem too far off. Considering that it is about Mikhail and such.

This makes me wonder just how far does the cover-up goes. As of right now it seems to be instigated by Leon who seems to know much more than anyone else about the Vajra, the events of the 117th Research Fleet, the VF-27s and Ranka herself. He is certainly perfectly positioned for it being a high ranking officer of NUNs with an ear to the President whom probably is in the dark a great deal about the matter. We've also yet to figure out just where does Briare(sp?) fits into all of this.

Considering that Leon works for THE President of NUNS and is intimately connected with THE presidents daughter, I would say he is perfectly positioned to manipulate the flow of information and cause events to happen when he desires. I also think we hear Brera's voice on this episode.I think he is the one talking to Leon on the phone. ^_^

It seems that people who come in contact with the Vajra show some sort of taint in their blood. Or some marker, I don't know.

On the surface, episode 8 was a light, comedic filler episode. However, under all the fluff, some serious questions were raised.

Now it's time for me to don my tin-foil conspiracy hat, and present my latest round of theories.

Previously, we've speculated, that the VF-27 and Brera Stern belong to either Macross Galaxy special forces (beacuse the VF-27 seems to use advanced technology that Galaxy is famous for). Or, as some members have suggested, they belong to some as yet unnamed organization (perhaps another PMC).

However, what if the VF-27 and Brera Stern are actually from some secret black op group within the Macross Frontier NUNS, known only to Leon and a select few others?

Leon definitely seems to know something about the VF-27 and his sentence "Nothing else has been leaked right?" to which the mystery voice on the other end of the line replies: "We've confiscated all the data", seems to imply that Leon is actively trying to cover up the existence of the VF-27.

Now we know that cybernetic technology is illegal (or highly frowned upon) on the Frontier fleet, so this could be one reason why Leon is going to great lengths to cover up the existence of the VF-27. We know also that during the previous battle to save the Dulfim and Kaitos, Leon asked Cathy to obtain data on the Vajra. Perhaps Leon was also the one that sent Brera Stern to obtain additional data, once the Vajra carrier defolded.

Other questions raised:

  • What is the type-V Infection?
  • Presumably 'V' is for Vajra, which raises all sorts of questions!
  • Is the possiblity of the type-V infection why the Dulfim crew are still under quarantine?
  • Alto and Ranka who also came into contact with the Vajra in episode 2 were tested and released with no quarantine, so why do the Dulfim crew need to remain in quarantine?
  • Who is the mystery voice on the phone with Leon that asks "shall I continue observing her?" (refering to Ranka). - Could it possibly be Brera if he is working for Leon?

And who was Ranka talking with on her phone after the carrot song? I'm guessing it's Alto, which would make sense, but the voice sounded more like Mikhail to me.

Oh and............"Carrots love you, yeah!" (I'll never look at carrots in quite the same way again).

I don't like the mp4 format. Most of the time it crashes on my system, and no other video of the same type does that. Even on three other computers owned from 3 different people I've tried have the same issues.

Sounds like a specific issue. I run Media Player Classic w/K-Lite Codec and never have had a problem unless I use VLC and/or Modern Media Player to play the file. I also use Real Alternative.

Yeah, that sounds like a codec problem. I'd try downloading Gom or VLC (both which internal codecs, I think) and see if that doesn't help. Viewing something shouldn't crash your system.

As for the "V-type infection":

I bet they gave Luca an anal probe, and now he likes to sing-a about the moon-a and the june-a and the spring-a. :D

Seriously, he was either knocked out, disoriented or drugged when Alto found him. There has to be a reason they kept him alive, even if it was just as a prisoner. It could be they purposely infected him with something, or it could just be that exposure to these things is dangerous. They're supposed to be "biological weapons", right? There's no telling what kind of other kind of "biological" technologies running loose in that ship, part of that could be pathogens that attack intruders, make them susceptible to interrogation, etc.

I use VLC player for playing .AVI files and Media Player Classic for playing .MKV and .MP4 files. After installing the CCCP codec pack, I have no problem playing any of the Frontier fansub eps from Gattai, AiA I-Z, or Shinsen on my laptop.

The only Frontier fansub episode that has given my problems was the episode 8 by G.G. The audio and subtitles were completely out of sync with the video. I just deleted it. More than happy with the three aforementioned fansub groups for Frontier.

After some consideration, I gave this episode a neutral vote. First time I've done that. My votes for eps 1-7 have all been positive.

It wasn't terrible, but then it didn't blow my socks off either.

It did raise several interesting questions though IMO (see my post # 442 a few posts up).

It will be interesting to see the Japanese ratings for this episode. If it beats episode 7, I will well and truely give up in my efforts to understand the Japanese anime viewing public.

I suppose the Dulfim crews are still quarantined as there are a large number of them as opposed to Alto and Ranka, just two individuals that are easier to keep an eye on. This could mean that the V-virus may not be contagious but it's effects are of interest to whoever is manipulating events behind the scene.

And it has to be Alto that Ranka is talking to Alto on the phone as there was mention of Luca and both of them are the only ones that were onboard the Vajra carrier and exposed to open space with the cockpit opened. They needed to be checked for this "V-virus" and possible space radiation sickness, an ever present danger in space. Everyone else was safely enclosed in their craft the whole time so there is no need for them to be checked.

As of the moment the motivations of characters such as Leon and the President of SMS Harbere(sp?) are still shrouded in mystery. As it is I won't be surprised by the end of it we find that the Vajra end up being one of the elements we are sympathetic to and it's the human elements in the show that are antagonists.

And yes, eat your carrots! Ranka says so.

You can't dismiss the fact that the nose of the VF-27 bears the Galaxy insignia. There is definitely something shady going on, but I don't think you can pin it just on the Frontier. The UN is involved, the Galaxy is involved (atleast, its private backers), and the Frontier is involved.

Perhaps the V-infection virus is related to the Virus Theory mentioned in Macross Zero?

Dude...you mean the Vajra are turning people into GIRAFFES??? How fiendish!

Actually...that's an interesting idea. That the Protoculture stimulated human evolution, and now the Vajra are stimulating it again.

But evolution into WHAT would be the question...
