Definitely looked like Cheyennes to me.

Actually they looked more like a mixture of both the Cheyenne & the Tomahawk to me... (the torso of a Tomahawk with the arms and legs of a Cheyenne... an APACHE Destroid?).

They looked EXACTLY like Cheyenne model Destroids to me. (If anybody picked any differences, let me know, I am interested in this.)

Taksraven

Definitely some differences. Let me get back to you on that. Need some time to compare the Frontier screen capturers, with the CG pics of the Cheyenne that were published in an old issue of HJ.

I couldn't figure that last one out. I know for sure the second line by Alto is hedgehog. I don't know what the line by Mikhail was (which means I probably got it wrong). There's a word pun/joke in there that I couldn't figure out. Oh well, screw the hedgehogs.

The first Ozma line I had fun with. I actually mentioned it earlier in the thread. There's two ways to interpret it without knowing the kanji. "尻の匂い" or "smell of my butt" or "後の匂い" or "the smell behind me." I went with the second replacing back with afterburner and smell with scent. It works because the latter is euphemism. I actually thought "smell of my butt" initially but I remembered the other kanji and went "OOOH, I GET TO MAKE THE LINE FUN WITH PLANE RELATED TERMS" verbally. Oh, and Ozma boosted away.

i think AIA-IZ version is better.

not that AIA-IZ is perfect, but it is closest to perfect. they made mistake, i notice they call alto skull 5. ok, the other just translated, AIA-IZ translated and change to closest english sentence.

gattai is fast, but i hate mkv, because i use windows and mac, not linux - mkv work best on linux.

on vlc gattai mkv is very shaky. not good, gattai members use linux. if they use windows, they would do something about it.

The gun-hands were what struck as most similar to the Cheyenne.

Gattai looks fine to me in Media Player Classic on Windows.

I personally prefer mkv since that provides the best mix of audio and visual quality. And there's something nice about being able to turn off the subs. For instance the launch and fold sequence of episode 6 had more impact without the subs getting in the way.

Well, looks like it's that time of the week again where we wait for the next episode, just hours away.

Got to say this has been the most active thread yet, and we didn't even discuss the animation quality. Well, not much anyway.

Look at those hours just ticking away.

That may bound to change, especially with the animation quality of the preview.

As early as now, I'm preparing for a lot of negative votes for episode 8. :(

I don't hear a onegaishimasu anywhere in that dialogue neither do i hear a yasashiku shite

I'm quite sure it says "Kouchira Dulfim, *** *** tanum"

Translated: "This is Dulfim, *** *** leave it to you." AiA and GG is more accurate

Yeah I stand corrected about the yasashiku shite thing.. I went back and I think I trusted the subs too much and started hearing things. its definately "something something tanomu".

At this point it's just nitpicking, but Valkyries don't have afterburners since they use thermonuclear engines.

(Afterburners work by shooting jet fuel into the hot exiting gasses in a chamber after the turbine, where it then also combusts and adds to the thrust. Valkyrie thermonuclear engines just heat up inert gasses or other such material(such as air while in atmosphere) and push them through the engine. So unless they carry around a seperate tank of jet fuel, they don't have afterburners, and are not listed to have them on Macross Compendium  )

PS:The exception being the VF-0 and SV-51, since they use normal jet turbines.

i dun want to load a ton of codec

so i go for vlc, but not good for mkv.

I prefer using SMPlayer its like VLC but it has a ton of options e.g. screen equalizers(built-in contrast and brightness even gamma settings), filters, subtitle positioning, audio equalizer and amplifier and many more.

so far it works OK for me even in MKV file(i mean especially MKV files)... just try it you have nothing to loose ;)

no need for downloading codecs!!!!

The Destroids on the Macross Quarter are definitely a variation of the Cheyenne, but they are different. The "Quarter Destroids" have very similar features to the Cheyenne, like the torso, head and similar arms, but they appear to have much larger guns and larger missile launchers. Plus there seems to be some stylistic alterations, though I need better pictures to compare them in depth.

For curious fans, here's a screen capture of the Destroids on the Quarter:

ANd here's the old Destroid Cheyenne:

The Valkyries have "overboost" which basically the sci-fi equivalent of an afterburner. It's part of the statistics for the VF-1 and basically doubles the thrust of the reaction engines. It's also included in the official line art:

It's figurative.

Think of afterburners as "hitting the gas." I mean, most peopel won't know how afterburners work. They just associate rush of power to engines and speed boost. =o

People like to nitpick about things like that (especially me), but that doesn't mean that the line doesn't work.

Is that the offical explanation of the Nuclear Reaction Engines? That's not the idea I had about them. What gases then do the engines heat up for thrust when in space then, some type of hydrogen or something the valkyrie has on board?

My theory on it, and this is just the idea I got in my mind, is that since they are nuclear reaction engines I thought it was something like hydrogen* (stored on board somewhere I figured) was fused (I figure they would have good fusion capabilities then and wouldn't be using fission anyway) into helium and the resulting energy from the reaction not only powered the craft but was 'somehow' channeled into thrust (perhaps as well with the resultant helium) in the form of some type of plasma.

Granted that idea of mine relies on that 'somehow' to get the immense energy/plasma from a fusion reaction to be propelled out of the engine, but it made sense in my mind. If any of that method sounds familiar it's because that is how impulse engines in Star Trek create thrust, it is the plasma directed from fusion reactions in the impulse fusion generators on the ship (whereas the warp core/matter-antimatter reaction assembly powers most of the ship as well as the nacelles for warp).

*Although Hydrogen is the most likely element to be used in a fusion reactor, helium-3 is also a likely candidate as it is believed easier to fuse, but there isn't much of that on Earth but the Moon has a ton of it.

They're Cheyennes for sure, different weapons packages from what we saw in Zero, but definitely Cheyennes.

Here are the civilian variants that are shown putting out fires and cleaning up bug-guts in episode 2.

Uhh... the mkv container format is an open standard, and it is just as well supported on Windows as it is on Linux. The reason you're having problems is that VLC's h.264 playback is TERRIBLE, and it only has provisional support for SoftSubs. There are very few fansub groups who still use hardsubbed XviD avi's; and within the next couple years as more and more content moves to high-def, nobody will be using avi anymore.

So rather than making accusatory comments directed at a group who is doing us a favor by releasing fansubs in HD, how about you fix the problem with your computer. Download CCCP and use Mediaplayer Classic, it works perfectly. If your computer is a Pentium 4 or earlier, and high definition h264 playback is choppy, buy a copy of the coreAVC codec.

I assume whatever gas can be compressed the best for longer sortie time. But yeah, the thermonuclear reaction's job is to just heat incoming gas into plasma and shoot it out the end. The stuff that's actually driving the reaction isn't shot out.

you're actually insulting the general culture of a people that is coming up with... let's see, i dunno, anime??

well sure if you don't like anime, thats fine.but if you do, and you still insult the japanese as opposed to america, then there's something wrong there. stick with shrek. or ice age. or surf's up. take your pick. they all broke box office records there anyway.

Hey I don't have to like everything japan throws out there ok, just like I dont have to like every tv show made in america or every american made movie. Im just stating my opinion based on facts, and the fact is that I don't agree with the trends in popular entertainment currently taking place in japan that is all.

I assume the Overboost works by upping the reaction temperature past safe operating limits for short bursts at a time?

Oh wow, the fact is your opinion? What happened to this thread? Let's talk about Macross F and not Japanese culture or whether or not a valk has afterburners (although I was with it at first when it pertained to subtitles).

I see, very well then, I didn't know there was an official explanation, but that actually makes sense, and probably is simpler than my idea. Thanks for the info.

wow, this thread reached 58 pages before going into the next episode. must be some kind of record. :)

haha I was actually going to make a comment about this a couple of days ago, when the thread had even less pages, on a side note, did anyone mention that one of Alto's VF wing gets blown off right before he makes it in the enemy ship?

Oh I'm not brave enough to start that kind of discussion. I'm a follower, not a leader ;) . It doesn't bother me either way though.

I haven't said much on the VF-27, but after seeing everything from everyone I have to say insignia's don't lie. It is a NUNS plane, and being from Galaxy makes sense... now if we only know what exactly the VF-27 is, lol... as I used to say (not that anyone here would know) "Terribly Mysterious."

But then why would he shoot Luca's gun away when he could cut it in half with his mind?

(Sorry if it's already been said... didn't feel like searching for it...)

Hahaha, no you are the first in this topic to catch that reference. Good Job, for when you notice the references of others, others will be more likely to reference you. I couldn't resist.

What's with all this drama over Ranka's stomach? So the poor girl has some pudge and she slips from holding it in FOR ONE SECOND and you all give such critisim over her. Just because some of us have tendancy to have fat accumulate over there... :( Although I admit it'd be funny if she had Dr Venture's "problem" lol

The thing that kinda turned me off to the red ship being NUNS-based is if you're going on a super-secret mission why'd you have markers associating you to a group that could be easily picked up?

Ep. 7 had a nice set-up of finally having a big space battle. Looks like Ep. 8 might slow the story down with a more introspective look at the character's civilian lives again. I was hoping to see the new Q-Rau in some more battle scenes besides the few seconds it was shown in.

I also had trouble watching the .mkv files via my GOM player with the sound not syncing and locking up. I switched over to VLC and it ran much smoother, some sections had a brief pause but it was watchable again.

P.s. Don't know if it was mentioned earlier, but that new enemy battleship design sure reminded me of that medical ship from the end of SW: The Empire Strikes Back.

Not sure. Maybe it just works by dumping more reactant in and firing the engines at double thrust for as long as they can withstand the temperature :)
