Battlestar Galactica Discussion III

....

I wish RedWolf hadn't told me that the first earth they find isn't OUR earth, though. It didn't ruin it for me, but it made it much less of a mindfrak tha it otherwise would've been.

You're never going to let him live that one down, are you? :D:lol:

Nah, it's not worth getting upset over.

Hell, I even took him off of my Ignore List a few minutes ago. :D

But I do want to thank everyone for being considerate and using spoiler tags and stringing me along and dropping fun hints and things like that. Y'all didn't have to do that, and it made my viewing of the series a lot more fun than it otherwise would've been. So, YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!

And David mentions a line that I thought was interesting, too, but perhaps for a different reason. I loved the structure of the episode(s)..taking us back to before the Fall of the Colonies, and showing us stuff we didn't know about these characters. Baltar's embarrassing father (and Caprica Six's role in finding him him a good place to live out his remaining years weeks), Roslin's odd date, Adama's lie detector test, Lee and Kara doing shots, Boomer messing up her landings...most of the threads woven into the finale as though commenting on the main action (although the only symbolism that I caught was with Lee and the pigeon, which obviously represents Kara).

I totally wasn't expecting nearly an entire episode's worth of time to be devoted to setting up life on Earth, but it was rather gratifying, after spending so much time with these characters, to see how they'll live and what they'll be doing for the rest of their lives. I feel bad for Chief Tyrol, though...since it seems that he'll live and die alone. I mean, so will Adama, but Adama's a lot older...

I'm a little surprised that so many of the characters survived (Sorry, Racetrack), and I was also surprised that it had such a positive (if bittersweet) ending.

So, um...on to The Plan, I guess. B))

the one nitpick I have with the ending is when the Galactica jumps out from the uber cylon base, shouldn't the jump have ripped the thing in half or something? Considering how a little raptor jumping next to the galactica nearly tore her apart.

Not in half more like a wider hole. Like what the Raptors did.

The Cylon Colony is 30 km in length and 45 km in width. Which is to my disbelief that the Cylons could build something that big. Even if the said ship's core is the vessel Ellen, Saul, Galen , Tory, and Ander's escaped in.

Plus where the heck are the First Cylon War Basestars?

At least the Cylon Colony has point defenses. Unlike the Basestars which are missile ship/carrier hybrid.

On the tech contrast and comparrison notice there is some symetry among Colonial Fleet and the Cylon Fleet.

Five armed Colonial ship classes and variants seen. Columbia being a Galactica type variant.

Five armed Cylon vessels. The retcon of the Basestar can be creatively interpreted as two variants of the double Y basestar. Two types of Vipers and the Raptor. Two types of Raiders and the Heavy Raider.

Gubaba I suggest you watch the Caprica pilot first. There is some minor spoiler in the dialogue that directly relates to major plot points of Caprica.

Plus watching both chronologically as of release you get a feel of what the Colonies were like before the fall of the Colonies.

Done and done. (I didn't quite feel like strapping myself in for the BSG finale last night, but I wanted to watch SOMETHING, so I saw Caprica. I'm not sure what I thought of it yet, though... It doesn't seem terribly promising as of yet, but I'm interested enough that I'll watch the series when it starts.)

Wow dude thanks. I'm supposed to be on a zero-spending plan but that's too good of a deal. Seasons 4 & 4.5 here I come...

I stilll haven't decided whether i'm going to punge in or not, but Gubaba's positive experiences with it are tempting me to check it out. Good on you for avoiding spoilers for as long as you did, I just kinda followed along topics here, and watched the last 3 episodes when they aired just to see how it ended. I've always been terrible about spoilers :)

I agree that what was done with the final five wasn't a retcon, but it was sloppy plotting. They spent two and a half seasons building up these characters (well, Tigh, Tyrol and Anders, anyway) only to throw it all away because making them Cylons sounded like a good idea at the time. It would be different if it had been planned all along, if the writers had been consistent with developing these characters from the beginning of the series to the end, but they weren't.

[...]

It's not the idea that these characters were Cylons that bothered me, it's the way they undercut good characters for the sake of a big reveal and the logical inconsistencies that followed that bothered me the most. This could have been avoided, and been much more interesting if it had been planned and plotted all along.

You just put my main gripe with BSG in to words. Still I can't blame the writers for making decisions on the spot that turn sour later on. That's the price of having to make things up as they go along. To compare the script of a novel can be revised and polished untill it shines. This is really where BSG pushes the limits of television productions. Unless we reach a point (if ever) that shows like this can be fully planned out in advance, BSG is probably the best we can hope for.

The Plan is going to be shown on Jan 8 on Sci-Fi (I refuse to spell it with a Y) according to an ad I just saw.

I just watched it earlier today.

Not bad, but...I dunno. I can see why most people seem to be so "blah" about it.

In a kooky sort of way, it kind of reminded me of "Back to the Future Part II"...y'know, kinda "Here's a scene you've seen before and here's what was REALLY happening before and after that scene." It was clever, and it's a testament to the writer and EJO that it hung together as well as it did, but it still seemed rather superfluous.

The opening attack was pretty cool, though. And I liked the subplot about the little boy. And if anything, it made Boomer seem even more tragic than she already was.

The opening attack was pretty cool, though.

Which proved some theories that basestars weren't designed to fight battlestars but for planetary bombardment.

Who knew they can spin like that?

A nice contrast to Galactica's flight pods that can retract while performing FTL.

We also got a final confirmation how big the Valkyrie is. If you look closely it is one of the battlestars along with the Yashuman.

The Valkyrie type battlestar is smaller. Around 700 meters. This is what I assume is the bulk of the Colonial Fleet. During the First Cylon War twelve Galactica type battlestars were built. Out of the twelve only three including the Galactica survived the war. This would suggest building such sized warships is expensive. By the time of the Second Cylon War the Galactica types were either retired or upgraded. With the newer and bigger Mercury class battlestar such as the Pegasus taking their role as flagships. Also there is another warship other than battlestars in the Colonial Fleet. The "Berzerk" Fleet Escort, as the name suggest it is an escort ship for a Battlestar Group.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I finally saw THE PLAN, and I must say, was nice to see BSG again on TV, however very little PLANNING went into this story, never thought i would down talk Galactica but I was not impressed with this very much. a few good parts but overall.....

We get it that the Cylons Plan was to destroy humanity as a type of revenge & make it a Cylon only world. But like many shows or movies now a days, you are simply given a hint of the idea or the gist of whats happening and your supposed to finish the story in your head. I would have preferred to see the events after the 1st Cylon War, some parts of the 40 years in between, them massing their fleets, Daniel??, the Fall of the Colonies and then the fact their PLAN failed.

As someone else wrote, more of a clip show with a few new scenes tossed in.

Hmm...I think it's unfair to expect the movie to cover events that it never promised to. I thought it was a nice little coda, cleverly done (although I'm not sure why David Hingtgen said I shouldn't watch it before Daybreak...to me, it seems like, for a first-time viewer (something I'll never be again, alas), it would slot it quite nicely right before the final episode).

I couldn't shake that feeling that it was written primarily to apply a hasty coat of spackle to some of the nastiest plot holes in the series, but I thought it did a pretty good job of doing it.

But...did I miss something, or did they not say what happened to the Simon-the-Cylon who was with Anders' resistance? As far as I can recall, he just kind of disappeared...

It also seemed to me that, rather than being "a clip show with a few new scenes tossed in," it was mostly new scenes with a few old clips tossed in for context. :)

Anders tells someone to head back to their base to deal with the Simon-model.

Especially the whole invasion force scene. A thowback to the mini-series with extra scenes with the Cylons and Final Five.

It was a few days after the Cylons blew up the Armistice station.

When you think about it the Colonial Fleet should have been alert when they didn't hear as much as beep from it.

but remember, by that time the colonials thought the cylons weren't coming back. Baltar was on TV saying it was time to end the restrictions on computer tech and people were mocking Adama for having his "no network" rule.

"The Plan" isn't a plan. Well, it was, but its as much of "a plan" as a baseball player saying, "I am going to hit the ball with my bat." Well, duh. I guess I expected some reasoning or motive behind the Cylon actions beyond what we've already heard.

Unnecessary TV movie was unnecessary.

Finally watched The Plan over the past few days.

Definitely agree with most of the sentiments here.

It was okay, but I'll probably not add it to my DVD collection of the series.

When I heard this was coming out, I was hoping it would all take place before the war and show the events from a cylon perspective that lead up to the attack. I miss the S1 & S2 machine-like thinking of the Cylons. That scene was there, but it took about 5 minutes, and there wasn't anything machine like about it. :(

It was ok, and worth watching, but there's really no new revelations.

Pretty interesting excerpt from Katee Sackhoff's interview with IGN. More here:

http://tv.ign.com/articles/105/1054694p1.html

=========================

Q: And Adama always seemed to be shaving.

Sackhoff: Eddie [James Olmos] was always shaving. I have such an awesome story about Eddie and this is so inappropriate. So I get a phone call from one of the executives over at Syfy or NBC, I don't' remember what it was. He's like, "You have to come and see these dailies." I was like, "Dailies from the movie The Plan? I'm not even in The Plan! What do you want me to see The Plan for?" I ended up not being able to [go see them] but he walked me through what happened.

Because it was straight to DVD, they didn't have to worry about nudity. So when it was discovered that they could have nudity, all of a sudden they got really excited and Eddie was like, "Fantastic, it's my goal to have nudity now because we could never have it." So there's a scene in the head where everyone's just naked and Eddie on the day is going, "Zoom in on the c**k. Zoom in on the c**k." The camera guy's like, "I can't zoom in the c**k. He keeps covering up the c**k." They're like, "Zoom in the c**k. Get him to do something else with his hands." They're like, "What do you want me to do with his hands?" [Eddie's] like, "Make him shave." So then he's shaving and he's like, "Now, zoom in on the c**k!" And that's on the dailies. I thought it was absolutely hysterical. I was told this and I was like, "That is so Eddie."

What do you see Starbuck?

Nothing but the c*ck

Grab your gun and bring the cat in.

Aye-aye, sir.

I wanted to put something like that in, but there wasn't enough room.

(For the record, my version ran: "What do you hear, Soldier?" "Nothing but the rain." "Then grab your gun and zoom in on the c*ck.")
