From Anime News Network:

NTT Resonant's goo Internet portal website has confirmed that the Macross F (Frontier) sequel is planned for a Spring 2008 broadcast. The finalized story will take place in A.D. 2059, five decades after the story of the first Macross television series and less than two decades after the last two sequel stories, Macross Plus and Macross 7. In the story, the Macross Frontier space colonization fleet is hosting a concert of an idol singer from the nearby Macross Galaxy fleet when a mysterious enemy attacks.

The January issue (on sale December 10) of Kadokawa's Newtype magazine will confirm the project's voice cast. Newcomer Megumi Nakajima had previously won a nationwide audition to perform and sing as Ranka Lee, a high school student who works part-time at a Chinese restaurant. Yuuichi Nakamura (Mobile Suit Gundam 00's Graham, Clannad's Tomoya) will play the main male lead, the fighter pilot trainee Alto Saotome. Aya Endo (Lucky Star's Miyuki, Gundam 00's Kinue) will play Sheryl Nome, the current top idol in the Macross universe. Hiroshi Kamiya (Honey and Clover's Yuuta, Gundam 00's Tieria), Jun Fukuyama (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion's Lelouch), and Houko Kuwashima (Gundam Seed's Flay, Inuyasha's Sango) will play the supporting characters of Mikhail Buran, Luca Angeloni, and Nanase Matsuura, respectively.

The official Macross website has confirmed that this month's Macross 25th Anniversary Special program will feature co-creator Shoji Kawamori as a guest and a 27-minute director's cut of the first episode of Macross Frontier. Kawamori will be working with the studio Satelight (Noein, Macross Zero) and composer Yoko Kanno (Macross Plus, Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop) on the new series. The special will also feature the television entertainers Hiroyuki Miyasako, Chihara-Junior, Shinya Arino, and Akane Ōsawa.

2059??

Definitely looks like a radar on the top of that Amored VF-25 Gerwalk.

Another reason why I think the Armour & FAST Packs are different between the grey & yellow VF-25 & the red and white VF-25 is that in the shots of the grey Armoured Gerwalk, it appears to have additional armor over the nose, something which the white & red VF-25 Fighter with FAST Packs does not.

The January issue (on sale December 10) of Kadokawa's Newtype magazine

Aiaiaiai. What's with the Newtype magazine release dates? Kresphy's already got (low quality) pictures, ANN says the 10th, and the shop I went to today says the 9th!

The fan service is not surprising given the character designers other projects. (How many of you other than wilfx did their research on the artists?) Though, it is an intriguing new direction for Macross in general. Sex sells, and I guess they want this new Macross to sell...

Those next generation Bolognese Frigates look mighty sweet. Though, I am reminded of ships from Space Captain Harlock and other 80's anime.

Agreed on the "generic gas giant".

Seems like Graham is not gettin turned on by Sheryl Nome at all, but by the armoured VF-25 :p

Somehow, the magazine pics of the VF-25 Battroid :"face" remind me of Tekkaman Blade.

I agree on the potential introduction of two different armour systems. Ozuma's VF-25s seems to carry WAAAAY more stuff than Aruto's 25.

Tell me about it, I was expecting it would be released on the 10th.

I'm wondering if there will be another page or two of lineart perhaps?

Hmm......the 2059 date if correct makes having the VF-171 in frontline service more believable age-wise.

But on the other hand makes it harder to swallow the jump from VF-19 & VF-22 to VF-25 in only 14 years since Macross 7. Heck in 2045 the VF-19/22 were only just entering limited service.

Newtype usually has a 6 or 8 page section on line art for a currently-airing TV series. I doubt that feature will be on Macross F in the January issue, but I am seriously wondering when - as that'll be the first published lineart for the new series.

I can understand places like HK and North America receiving the issue a day later from Japan due to shipping/air mailing, however Kresphy's already got a picture of it!!! Which means that the magazine has already been printed!

We may yet see the VF-19 and VF-22. That said, they may have only entered limited service, due to their manufacturing and deployment costs.

Though it may simply be like the VF-1. The VF-1 was the main mecha of SDF:M, thus it only makes a handful of rare guest appearances in Macross 7. The VF-19 and VF-22 being the main VFs of Macross Plus, and the VF-19Kai being the main hero VF of Macross 7 makes me think that they may deliberately not focused on them in Macross F, and only make guest appearances like the VF-1 did in Macross 7.

On the other hand, Yamato is pumping out a new YF-21, and they completed a YF-19 in the past year... it may just be a coincidence (as there's been no mention of a VF-17), but it may not be...

Yeah, I know, been buying it on and off since the mid-90s'.

In the December issue, we had the two page spread, plus a single page, so I'm hoping for at least the same in the Jan issue.

2059 is good. 2070+ was too close to Macross II. With 2059 we are only 14 years from Macross 7. Max would be just be 66 and still would look around 25.

Anyone want to bet that the mysterious enemy attacks on the Macross Frontier are from none other than the nearby Macross galaxy fleet?

Characters designs first looked like they were designed for little girls. Now they feature boobs for us boobs. They still stink IMEO.

I seriously doubt that, especially as Sheryl Nome has just come from the Galaxy Fleet.

I'm still wondering if and how they might market this in the West?

At the very least they have to loose the name "Macross" here or duke it out with HG over the name trademark...

As for the fanservice, I have no issues. It isn't nearly as bad as Godannar was.

I have mixed feelings about 2059, it does and doesn't work with previous history.

The lack of VF-19 could simply be explained that it became the "Military" front line fighter and that emigration fleets no longer fall under military jurisdiction as the trends in Mac 7 suggested. The VF-171 is the new main fighter and serves in the escort fleet, while the civilian ships have their own defence forces.

We'll find out the premise soon enough with the pilot episode this month.

Great new stuff!

The new date set as 2059 is great. It solves most of the problems of variable fighter progression that were brought about by a 2070 date. I'm not too concerned if we don't see any more of the VF-19 Excalibur or VF-22 Sturmvogel II. After Macross Plus and Macross 7, we've seen more than enough of those designs in animated productions. I have to say it would be unusual if the VF-19/VF-22 were already out of active service after only 14 years, but seeing the VF-171* means that not all the older valkyries will go unrepresented in this new Macross series. And it's possible the VF-171* became a much more mass produced fighter than was originally intended for the Nightmare.

It's interesting to see a new ship design. That big blue craft in the fleet battle looks interesting and I can see Bolognese Class Stealth Frigates in the background! That's good because I love those designs :)

I wouldn't be surprised at all if there were two armor sets. Most of the other Macross productions featured a Full Armored varaint and a Super variant, so it's to be expected. I agree that the leaf-shaped object on the top/rear of the "armored" VF-25 looks like a radar of some kind. It looks very similar to the VE-1 Elint Seeker radar unit.

So far, I'm adoring the character designs. Sheryl Nome looks great. I'm not all that worried about fan service in Macross. Macross has always had it and likely always will, but for the most part it's been kept well within reason. Just as long as the fan service doesn't become intolerable like many a poor anime, I can live with fan service. I'm not going to have any problems looking at Sheryl :)

The VF-25 might be specific to the Frontier fleet (developed and deployed there). We already have the mystery of what exactly "SMS" stand for, and what it means. The Frontier fleet, numbering some 10 million people, may be, in some sense, independent from UN Spacey. Or maybe they just wanted to get new fighter into the series. They've been playing fast and loose with Macross for a long time now. Something seeming not reasonable, not probable, or just not fitting in, doesn't mean it is not what is going on.

Yeah, and that picture Valkyrie addict posted has me a bit worried. I could really do without Spiritua and the mystical mumbo jumbo from Zero.

I still think the series would be alot more fun if the Frontier had been a Megaroad class ship still looking to settle some 40 years after its launch.

My early viewpoint:

Macross VF-X2 Story in 2050.

In this period, Racrance(ラクテンス)hold U.N. real power. This group want take all power in Earth U.N., it prevent Frontier Planet has autonomy(辺境惑星自治). So, there is autonom conflict between Earth U.N. and Immigrant Fleet.

Feb. 2051, U.N. and Vindirance(ビンディランス)defeat the Macross 13 of Racrance. Racrance's ambition is broken.

So, I think Macross Frontier separate from earth U.N. in 2059.

Independent, but not necessarily in conflict with.

It follows my idea that colony fleets are no longer under the jurisdiction of the UN military forces.

Who said anything about marketing to the international community?

One nice thing to see is finally we get to see ship-based anti-aircraft weapons being used by the fleet. :)

Sheryl's look'n very Britney isn't she! A trashy singer who woulda thought! ;) But it plays well since you've got "the little traditional girl" in RR (that dog eared hair still freaks me out).

I really don't like the Spring '08 release date because there is gonna be no way that they can clean up the 3D so it matchs the 2D in that short of a time span. Which leads me to believe that there will be A LOT less action(recycled transforms here we come!) and more storyline.

I also don't like the new setting date of 2059. It's just too close to M7.
