Macross Mecha Manual

Mr March

Recommended Posts

These models are a good representation. Apollo Leader. Purple Leader. Basically the color schemes are identical in execution to the standard ones but in different colors. In fact, there are six selectable colors in the game with Purple and Gray being the default player colors for Purple and Apollo squadron respectively. The others are carmine, orange, indigo, and brown. The brown is just the standard brown like on a VF-1A.

Those seem simple enough to do. As you say, I'm not noticing any changes in the color layout, aside from the insignia, which sadly I wouldn't be able to include. Other than that, I don't see any reason why these variants couldn't be included. Since I'm just going off description for the other four colors, I'll make up some demos and post them for your opinion.

Oh, the MAHQ will likely always have more Macross content than the M3. But I'm confident my site sells itself with the presentation of the content it does have :)

I'm considering doing a playthrough video of VFX-2 when I have the time, if I can manage to actually finish the last stage on Maniac this time. XD Only downside is that I won't be able to show the ending due to freezing issues... >_><_<

Mr March,

I was cruising through your awesome site today and noticed a few things.

1. The DYRL VF-1S has red triangle instead of yellow.

2. Are there anymore pics of the hangar bays? Maybe a pic that shows the exact location of the areas? I remember seeing about 3 of 4 different lineart pics somewhere.

3. Are there any pics of the launch arm?

Keep up the fantastic work.

1. I never noticed this one. You're refering to the red triangles on the shoulders, yes? I'll make a note and get it changed. That's an easy fix :)

2. There may be, but I likely won't include it at this point. I prefer the focus of the site remain on the colored line art.

3. There is a piece of line art in the VF-1A "Super" Valkyrie entry showing the launch arm. Here's a direct link: VA-1A Super Valkyrie upon launch arm

Make sure to keep visiting! :)

Actually, I don't see that in the future. Yours is more detailed now in the areas you gone through. You presentation of the data exceed theirs, even better than the series that they put the most effort in, which is Gundam.

Mind you, they will only be ahead of you in terms of the latest mecha. I forsee them getting specs on the VF-25 first though. Unless Egan Loo beats them out on the compendium, and you can work off that.

BTW, very minor point:

The goal of the Macross Mecha Manual is to present the mecha of Macross in

the best possible quality artwork and hopefully offer fans insight into the

remarkable machines found in the various Macross anime shows. In addition,

the Manual will also provide some size comparison pictures, featured mecha

of the month and the odd, rarely-seen drawing that is sure to please fans.

We will also have a bit of fun too, with some subtle tongue-in-cheek humor

and the occasional humorous picture, cause we cant take ourselves all that

seriously.

Thank you for saying so, kensei

To be fair, the MAHQ has a huge mandate. The website covers a lot of mecha from numerous shows like Macross, Patlabor, and many more. Plus, their main love is Gundam, as you say. So they have much more work to do and can't put the same level of detail into just Macross, or even their flagship mecha section for Gundam. ChrisG can only do so much, just like me. Nonetheless, I think the Macross Mecha Manual and MAHQ both serve good functions. The MAHQ serves as an all-encompasing visual encyclopedia that has an entry for almost everything. The M3 is an expanded fansite that embellishes upon the basic framework of the old Mecha Domain in great detail and the best quality art possible. I think of both as complementary. Even if some duplication does occur, the spread of Macross mecha information is the primary concern.

Like I always say, we need more Macross websites, not less. :)

The limitation to quality line art will be the big stumbling block for Macross Frontier and the new mecha like the VF-25, just as it is for the Macross Zero section. However, I'm not going to miss the boat on this one. I'm going to obtain the new japanese magazines and do my own scans to include Macross Frontier vehicles on the M3. At least, as much as they publish. I will have to rely upon Egan for translations.

I've looked at the paragraph you posted and noticed the little character error. Not sure what that is, but I'll have to fix it. Thanks for letting me know.

Actually, it may be appropriate the update the introduction. The original 6 month mandate of the M3 has long since been acheived and the website has continued beyond my original plans. I should reflect that in the written introduction.

wow! great website! very, very comprehensive. if it gets any bigger you may have to do thumbnails so people can more easily find what they're looking for.

just a question on the FP micro-missiles: you indicated an estimated 24 micro-missiles (12 per FP) and i can see that you are basing this off the VF-1S xray poster that came with the gold book. the yamato 1/48's though feature 40 micro-missiles (20 per FP) and i don't know if the ClubM Ultimate Detail 1/48 also features the same number.

i know that lineart should settle the score, but the xray poster offers the possibility that some of the micro-missiles may have been obscured, though that seems unlikely. would you know of any other lineart or official text that can validate either one?

thanks and keep up the great work!

Yeah! Another fan :) A big "Master List" of all the mecha has been suggested and I think I'll likely implement that.

We had a big discussion about the FAST Pack missile count when my website came out I think and it was very constructive. There are no official numbers for the missile count of which I'm aware and the cross-sectional line art is the only guide I've ever seen that comes close. Officially, the count could be as much as 40 micro-missiles or as few as 16 missiles.

However, I strongly believe that the correct count is 24 missiles. Why? Allow me to explain my case.

Aside from the cross-sectional line art, the only benchmark we can use is the events in the anime itself. We know that when Hikaru launched in the "Booby Duck" in Episode 24, he rescued Max and Misa by destroying 30 Reguld Battle Pods himself. If he fired every missile in the FAST Pack set (all 24 in the two HMMP-02 dorsal pods and 6 missiles in the two NP-AR-01 underarm pods) he'd have just enough to destroy every Reguld with a single all-out fusillade as was shown in the anime. I believe the numbers are very significant. Most of the time, specific unit counts are not given in SDF Macross battles. Numbers are usually only given when there is a reason (often to establish proportional size of the forces and give the audience a sense of scale). In Episode 24, they specifically state there are 60 Reguld Battle Pods, exactly half of which Max and his flight destroy on their own. Thus I believe this number was not arbitrary, but was chosen so that the audience would know exactly how many missiles were inside a fully armed VF-1S Super Valkyrie without having to be told through exposition (like a conversation) outside of the action. And more importantly, the cross-sectional diagram of the FAST Packs clearly suggests 24 micro-missiles which added to the six in the arm parts, agrees with the events of the anime perfectly.

Of course, this is all just a lot of fact checking and educated guessing. It might be totally wrong :) But based on the best information available to ME, this makes the most sense :)

yeah, i'm with you. i think 24 is the correct count.

the explanation you provided makes a very interesting anecdote. might be worth putting up in the "notes" section on fastpacks.

plus it should be easier to scratchbuild in 1/60 ^_^

for reference, here's an alternative source which pegs it at 40:

http://www.steelfalcon.com/Macross/fastpacks.shtml

i seem to recall it from the Robotech RPG Manual i had when i was a kid. that was before i was "enlightened" to the true macross series, so please don't stone me for mentioning the "R" word

can't help but wonder though what made yamato do 40, and if graham ever asked them or wrote anything on that.

edit:

hey, i just realized it debuted in episode 24. could that be another hidden sign?! lol

No worries, Major Focker. We all know Robotech sucks, so we can use the word with impunity :)

Seriously, the RPG stats are something I've worked very hard to avoid. Most of them are incorrect. Some truth may be found in bits and pieces of the game statistics, but as a rule it's best to ignore them entirely if one wants to get it right more often than not. Im unsure why the Yamato product does 40, but there is always the possibility they know better.

I doubt the episode numer "24" is signifcant in any way. It's likely just coincidence.

Problem RPG Stats is that it is hard to determine fact from fiction. RPG stats might contain accurate speed for a lesser known VF in fighter mode. If the author can't find that speeds for the other mode. They'll make it up. For RPG stats that is fine. Then someone might come around and start repeating those estimates as fact. RPGs stats are fine in one world only. Games.

MAJOR UPDATE!

Macross Mecha Manual Version 2.0 (Our One-Year Anniversary!)

It's 2008 and the Macross Mecha Manual celebrates it's first birthday! It's been a lot of work and I want to thank all the fans for visiting and supporting this website (including patiently enduring the recent server switch which had us down for a while). Today the Macross Mecha Manual not only features an update with 50 new profiles but also a website-wide revision making this one of the most important updates in the M3's history. Without a doubt, 2008 is going to be a big year for Macross as the newest animated television series in the franchise, Macross Frontier, begins airing in Japan in April. This past December fans were treated to a special promotional release of the first episode of Macross Frontier and the reviews have been largely positive from the fans and the larger anime community. It's an exciting time for Macross and I hope this website helps fans world wide enjoy the newest jewel of this long time science fiction franchise!

This update also adds Information Headers to all sections of the website. The headers feature production information and relevant trivia for each Macross anime. These headers will help website navigation as well as provide fans and non-fans alike with relevant reference points for properly placing each vehicle within the larger Macross continuity.

The new Macross production titled Macross Frontier now has a very rudimentary section on the Macross Mecha Manual. It is my hope that line art for Macross Frontier is made available much faster and in a more comprehensive book than that which was published for Macross Zero.

Macross World forum member Dante74 has created Custom Banners for each section of the website as well as new Navigation Buttons. I am extremely pleased to present his work and hope that these new additions make the website even more enjoyable for our visitors. Lastly, the for fans only section debuts which contains fan-made line art, custom color schemes, variant squadron colors, wallpapers, line art comparison pictures and other miscellaneous goodies. Due to visitor feedback, I've simplified the website by relocating Features and Humor (along with the sub-sections) into the new for fans only section.

Refer to the list below for all the new profiles in this update.

The link to your page doesn't seem to be working Mr March!

Works fine for me.

Great work on the M3 v2.0 there mr. March! Looking forward to seeing all the new stuff you've done wen I get home tonight.

Shouldn't the "main page" button in the navigation bar link to the index page instead of the splash page?

Thank you, sir. Your work has made my site all the better and I can't thank you enough.

As for the main page navigation link, I'm not sure it's much of an issue. Besides, the splash page has to get some love :)

kensei

Thanks for visiting.

The presentation really needed to be improved and I can't imagine it any better than it is now. It feels more like a real website :)

Do you have any plan to include the Macross 2 mecha into it?

Howdy stranger! :) I'm glad you had some time to check out the site.

I have nothing against including Macross II on the M3, it's just the lowest priority of the franchise. I also have no access to Macross II line art and I don't think briscojr84 does anymore either. I'm also very unfamiliar with Macross II. I saw it only once or twice years years ago and didn't like it (thus I don't own it). The near total lack of official statistics for the MII mecha also makes building profiles very hard. It's likely worth doing a proper profile for the VF-2SS (especially because of fan interest). I might do a rudimentary section that just features one b&w drawing of each Macross II mecha and very short profiles, like the VEFR-1 profile but without the stats or text. There's just so little to work with; I think Kawamori put more thought into the official mecha statistics of the Flashback 2012 music video than the creators of Macross II gave for their whole anime :(

Actually I have both all of the RPG books and the main artbook, although it doesn't have everything unfortunately. And I have MII on DVD, so I can snag some screenshots.
