Yeah I'm not too sure why she starts out with black hair in the opening, maybe its a nod to the manga?

I recall Mamoru Oshii saying (I think in a commentary

track somewhere) that the opening animation was created separately by a

different director.

The OP song (Miraiha Lovers) is one of all time favorites.

The OP with Condition Green is used in the last few episodes of the TV

series and in the first couple of episodes in the 2nd OAV series.

The "Early Days" OAV series is noted for having the AXIA cassette tape commercial.

Kinda shows the age :)

Managed to score a CLAT version off 2nd hand Amiami recently for pretty cheap. Had to take the plunge and went for a 2nd hand Ingram 1 for close to retail.

Now I'm making the Ingram 2 my current grail (because of how difficult it is to get at non-rape price).

CLAT version arrived recently, and it looks fantastic! I was in awe at its huge box first and foremost, and then the heft and build of the Ingram itself.

That command car looks great Darrin, do they make figures to pose with it or am I thinking of another command car toy/model?

The kit CC does comes with pre-painted figures...

I've never had multiples of any collectable, until now. Managed to get a second WAVE Helldiver.

Also picked up a Hasegawa 1/48 ground crew set to display with them. Should look pretty cool together. You can swap off the landing jets, parachute pack, night vision goggles and more.

WAVE makes a very nice piece. I recommend this to any hardcore Patlabor fan...

Any good inexpensive patlabor figures even still out? Something under 60 dollars I might wanna sink my teeth into?

Not too many choices in that price range, but the first things that come to mind are the various Kaiyodo Revoltech figures out there. I've also seen the Bandai Labor in Action Ingram for cheap, but that line was killed only after one toy.

The CM patlabor line was fun, I just did a quick search on ebay and found this for $60. Only problem is US shipping rate. http://www.ebay.com/itm/CMs-Patlabor-Brave-15-Ingram-1-2-OVA-Ver-Gokin-7-Action-Figure-/161046758015?pt=US_Action_Figures&hash=item257f22827f Even though it says ingram 1&2 I believe it only comes with one figure and parts change to unit 1 or 2.

Yes, the CM's figures are really awesome and can still be found at huge discounts. Ingram 1&2 is a good set to start with (1 main figure, 2 head sets and shoulder pads to turn it into labor 1 or 2), then try to get a Griffon. They also did 2 figure sets which had in scale crew and vehicles in addition to the main characters figures.

If you want more there are other Patlabor figures that can be found for cheap on Amiami but they are definitely weaker releases from CM's, especially the Brocken which varies from pretty awful to downright nightmarish, depending of your luck :

Those CM's don't look to bad, the Revoltechs are TINY.

What about the old Bandai MG's?

The MGs are great kits and they don't look too shabby either even when left unpainted. I have read several other hobbyists say that the overall sculpt of the MG Ingrams are "stretched" out, but it doesn't bother me, they still look awesome-especially the Griffon flight type. During the time they hit the market I was just glad that Patlabor got the MG treatment. So do pick them up if you don't mind assembling your toys.

And don't count out the Revoltechs, they're fun little trinkets to tinker around with when shelf space is a commodity.

I had a couple of the old MG Ingram back in the day. I had the regular Alphonse and the reactive armor type. They're pretty typical of MG's from the time period. it's got a mostly complete inner frame with fairly decent articulation. There are quite a few screws used in the inner frame which make the construction less fun and don't really make the kit any better (I'll never understand why bandai was so into including screws in early 2000's MG kits, but I'm glad they've stopped).

It really does need a fair bit of paint to make it look legitimately good,IMO. None of the clear parts are colored and there are a lot of little parts that just don't look right until they're painted (tip of the main head fin, gun, shield, baton, etc). The single worst part is that the pilot is completely unpainted which looks pretty bad considering how big and visible it is in the figure.

Really though, the worst part of the kit is the rubber sleeves they included to replicate the cloth coverings on the joints. they don't look good at all and are a paint to clean up and make look decent. they're also very springy to the point that they can overcome the tension of the joints and make posing difficult. The way they anchor the shoulder and hip sleeves to the main body is terrible, it involves attaching a plastic rig to the sleeve with pegs, but the pegs pop out constantly and frequently tear the holes in the sleeve open; even if you glue it in place it will easily pull out of the torso and leave unsightly gaps when you try to move the arms or legs. Also, being rubber, it will dry out over time and after a few years it will become brittle and start to shred apart on you if you try to pose it.

The armored version is even worse. the hands on it are this funky plastic that looks like crap, the arms are completely cover in rubber sleeves that have the same problem as the rubber joint covers on the regular versions and the extra armor looks incredibly cheap and plastic if you don't weather it, paint all the buckle/strap details and give it some sort of matte coat.

I love the Revoltechs. The movie version Ingrams come with a ton of accessories and are very well executed. Recommended. The guns, and right parts to be so, are hard plastic, not PVC. The Helldiver is very cool and nicely done, so is the Type ZERO. Pick up one or two of the little HotWheels diecast Command Cars too - cheap and fun.

I did get the little Bandai Ingram 'In Action' toy, not recommended. It tried to do too much at the same small scale as the Revys, like opening cockpit. Everything was too loose and fiddly, not nearly as durable and posable. I remember feeling like it was a total piece of junk. Rubber guns permanently bent like bananas didn't help.

post-8486-0-27552400-1373891105.jpg

The only feature I liked over the Revys was the green face plate -- it was translucent, instead of just painted. I'm not surprised this line died a quick death. I Googled 'Bandai Ingram In Action' and got only packaged pics. It can't be shown actually in action or it falls apart.

What about a Robot Spirits Patlabor line?

With the live action movie coming out that a good possibility, though they will probably stick to just making movie designs.

By the looks of the teaser designs I will be able to save my money if they do figures of them.

Picked up the new 'Early Days DVD' - here are some screen caps from the opening...

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally got my WAVE Wham Ingram.

Very impressed on first handling. Nice heft, seems like lots of metal.

BUMMER right off the bat though as WAVE over protected this thing with tons of plastic do-dads and unnecessary rubber shipping sheaths on the antenna.

Three of these would not come off and I damaged one forcing them off! I made a miracle repair so I am relieved.

It was new and never opened all these years which I appreciated, but those particular protectors were not needed IMO - and fused to the paint apparently over time.

POSITIVES:

• Rubber joints look fine in person. They have been controversial, but look better to me than the cloth CMs used.

• Looks MUCH BETTER in person than in photographs - not sure why. It shouts high-quality. Cannot stress this enough - the sculpt looks wonky in MANY pics I've seen, but in person it looks great.

• Tons of great tampo printing and panel lining. They did not disappoint here. Even tampo on the pistol?

• Use of translucent plastic for lights and details amazing - A+. Even the little lights behind the foot are done in this manner - very nice.

• Pilot visible and well done - cute!

• Green visor is superb! --with cool details behind the glass a la Skull 1.

• Gun hand holds pistol perfectly - all gun hands should be this good.

• Dual clear plastic heads up displays look great. And the 3 windows right beside the word Alphonse are clear plastic instead of just painted.

NEGATIVES:

• Unnecessary rubber protective shipping sleeves on antennas! DRAT

• No painted detail on the arm extension mechanics. It could sure use some metallic paint here, and in the cockpit area, and on the 2 chest vent metal screen pieces - OH, and in the leg holster... All just gray plastic. This needs an upgrade.

• Pilot should have gone up about 1 or 2 cm higher. The space is there for the head but it just does not raise high enough.

• Baton hand not so good. The hole drilled to help hold the little peg on the baton not big enough - or right - peg will not stay in. And the fingers are not shaped well to look like its holding it. Baton does not stay in hand.

• Cockpit hatch doors a bit fiddly and can be bumped ajar.

• Gold sheriff symbol glued on a bit crooked!

OVERALL I am very happy. WAVE is one of my favorite companies and that's why I decided to track this release down. Its no OVA Galient or Helldiver like I have from them - but an extremely nice effort.

The first pic is the only one I took - posed with CMS command cars. The rest of the photos are the only way to do it justice - so props to all who took them. Unless I'm in sunlight I stink at photos...
