Nice find! According to this, Yamato is at #64 in Japan's highest grossing openings ever list:

That's not bad. Note that the oldest movie I can see on that list is Terminator 3, though.

Also, going slightly off-topic, it is surprising to see the apparent lack of popularity of films like Twilight if we look at the 2009 top rankings in Japan according to that site. And Macross F only made about $5 million, just a bit more than Yamato Resurrection (even though I believe they spent a lot more advertising on MacF than Yamato), and much, much less than Evangelion.

I'm guessing that it's because that website wasn't around long much before then, and probably cannot be bothered to dig into historical archives (language barrier notwithstanding).

Space Battleship Yamato knocked out of #1 spot by the new Kamen Rider and Tron Legacy.

That's easy - Tron Legacy has had a lot larger advertising push then Yamato.

Also, ask any 3 to 10 year old about the two franchises, and it's "Yamato, who?" Toys R Us also has a good half shelf dedicated to (the latest incarnation of) Kamen Rider (I nose, as it's what my 5 year old wanted for X-mas); with zero dedicated to Yamato. Macross F also has a poor performance - only a couple of the latest Bandai Kits piled on and amidst the other non-Gundam kits in 1/8 or 1/10 of a shelf. Ah well, at least it's there.

Really? I can't say I've noticed. I think I saw about one TV spot and a couple of posters in a train station, but that's it for Tron as far as I can tell. Yamato on the other hand, has been on TV constantly, in both commercial breaks and on TV programmes, with Kimura Takuya plugging it on every show he's on (and he's pretty much on EVERY SHOW anyway).

I don't know man, I've been trying to figure out that one myself. It's almost as if they don't want this film to make as much money as possible...

I wish they would release it here Stateside cause I wold be first in line with my ticket handy! This is one of those films that must be seen on the big screen at least once!

Haha, can't wait for a proper subbed one? Wait for the HK/PRC bootleg with crappy Chinglish subs...shouldn't take too long.

Hey Kronnang Dunn, is there any more to that image you're using for an avatar?

In our HD future, old school HK subs just don't cut it. Besides, anyone who cared about quality there got arrested/out of the business almost a decade ago.
