Heh heh--I just watched it for the first time tonight, too! And only an hour later.

I still want a VF-0D toy, not an S. My next big valk purchase will be whatever happens first in the next few months:

1. Yamato announces VF-0D

2. Yamato announces 1/48 Milia reissue. (You can still find her, but I'm not paying over 200 bucks for something I already have in 1/60)

Also having just watched DYRL to get in a Macrossy mood before watching Zero, I'm now thinking I need a DRYL Hikaru 1S...

But your gonna love episode 2 more, beacause of a certain battle. Instructor V. Student.

I couldn't possibly develop any more respect for destroids than I already have. But, yeah ...

No, if 'Perv watched the scene with the Monster and its fingers he's seen the end of it. I do find it hard to believe that anyone that has owned 'Zero, hasn't watched it yet. Seriously, the only other time I've watched anime with my mouth open in awe is when I picked up the G-Taste series...

Couldn't agree more. I had to watch it a few times myself. I recently rewatched it again about a month ago. I think I've gone through the whole series about 4x now.

My main gripe has to do with the way ivanov died. Would really like to have seen him and roy face off to see if roy could overcome his teacher. (similar to how shin kicks Nora into the water in gerwalk)

The Monster was cool! Really get to see its long range ability in this. It turned the fight around in favor of humans so it comes out as the true hero of macross zero not roy or shin. :p Whoever piloted it got no credit!

The Monster is ALWAYS the hero. Even if it just gets blown up.

Oh, bless you, bless you! I've been resistent to getting any sort of bittorrent programs or anything like that, so this offers a nice alternative. Sure the d'load times are s--t, but I won't complain. All I can say is GOOD LAWD!

Too bad I can't save it to h'drive in this format....godd--ned Macromedia Flash...

okay, so I'm d'loading/watching pt 5 now [again, crap-tastic load times], and all I can say is: Marvellous. Bloody Marvellous! I guess now I can go back and search the Zero-related threads, now that I can put what people said into context. Before, I figured "I probably won't watch this," so I never followed them closely before. Now people's discussions about "flying rocks," "bird man" and such make much more sense, and the series isn't nearly as abstract and nonsensical as I thought it might be. In fact, I love it! Thank you, Kawamori-san!

Finished Zero in two nights, had no freaking idea what the plot was 'cause I kept skipping to the dog fight scenes...that Vf-0S armour was just awsome!!! Yamato...yamato...yamato...

Just finished watching ep. 5 last night; the very end was a little bit fu--ed up. "...Shin is the bird man"? WTF is that?!

I think the series more than fulfilled its mission; i.e. giving us early Macross-era mecha [or at least, near equivalents], making much better use of high end animation and CG technology to provide visual punch that SK wouldn't have dreamed possible for his creations back in '82. A lot of the central themes from the first Macross are here, but with lots and lots more eye candy. And the details! The beautiful, beautiful details of the Valkyries in flight. Glorious...

I know if Yamato does go further with the VF-0 toy line, the A model is likely to come next. But I'd actually like to see a VF-0D more. I've grown attached to that one somewhat. It's overall shape brings to mind other canonical jets of that "era" like the Dragon and the MiM from Macross. It "fits" in that era of Macross best of all, I'd think...

With HK subtitles I could be wrong, however I don't think that Shin is the Birdman, rather he just "took flight" and disappeared in Birdman-like fashion...

Don't watch it like a porn movie. ;) It does have a story, even if it's somewhat hippie-ish. <_<

I'm glad you guys liked Zero, I found it to be a rather empty and impersonal ova, quite boring too, 75% of the animation is awesome and that's it, story wise it sucks, the designs are very good for the most part, the amphibian Octos should have appeared more and that stupid Monster with hands left out of the series, the characters were so so and that Afos was just awfull, although I enjoyed the series the first time I never went back to see it again, it only reinforces my opinion that Kawamori should be kept away of directing and writting more macross, he's an awesome mecha designer but as a writter he just lost what he had during SDF, dyrl and M+., just my 0.02 cents

Later B))

The way I see it is they will measure demand by how well S and A do. So what I intend to do is get one of each one that comes out. (as a way to support more macross zero toys) Eventually I want them to make the Reactive armor and ghost booster too.

I think most people should just watch macross zero for the dogfighting alone rather than going out of thier way to not watch it just because they don't like the story. To me it will always be a mecha show but with a hint that there is more to life than the happenings in our own dimension. (I have no problems accepting other worldly aliens living in different dimensions, just so long as the mecha half makes sense :D)

But somehow they have to put the 'music fixes everything' theme into each show to not piss off the diehard fans who will complain it wouldn't be macross without it. I don't mind the theme really as I think it ties in well with creation myth. ie the world being spoken into creation through the word/sound/song. If you thought this was wierd, you probably may not like rahxephon. (the whole show revolves around music theme and sound used as weapons) It's only when the focus is on music alone that it takes away from the mecha part that I get worried. Like when basara defeats people with no help from conventional weapons and hogs all the limelight in macross 7. (definately take away the usefulness of the valk imo)

Basara would have died really fast if it wasn't for those convential weapons. Without the other pilots running interference, he would've been swarmed and torn apart.

That's probably part of why Gamlin became a major character. It put a face on his protectors.

I thought it was funny when the little girl next to the Monster on the aircraft carrier pulled the Obi-Wan-Kanobe stunt and appeared in Shin's cockpit to give him guidance. Not-so-brilliant at that particular moment. The Monster sure was sweet though :)

It's not so much what they said, but the whole Shin-flying-off-into-space thing that had me thinking: hey wait just a dang a minute! didn't Sara just ask you to watch out for Mao? Where do you think you're going? <_< Yeah, it was funny when at certain parts bits of the dialogue was obviously "lost in translation" for the subtitles. LOL, by pt. 5, they were calling Mao "Mayor," and poor Roy was called everything from "Rooylu" to "George" at one point. And apparently, the alien is named Carlton? It was funny how they translated the air traffic controllers too, even though they spoke some English [albeit, through seriously heavy accents]. "Skull one, Skull two, cata-pult ready!" C'mon guys, why even translate for the subtitles? we can make that out; no need to make work where it isn't necessary.

The story wasn't all that bad to me, even if it was pretty familiar:

1. You've got the young "hero" in the form of Shin, who gets taken under Roy's wing so to speak, and gets somewhat involved in a love triangle with Sara and Mao. While it doesn't really develop into anything with either girl, it's apparent that there's some attraction to both. But it's good that nothing did come of Mao's attraction though; she just seemed too dang young. How old is she supposed to be? 14? 15? That woulda just been foul. :o

2. And there's the importance of music. Apparently it played a critical role in Sara's being able to tap into the alien powers, and its correlation to human emotions had something to do with awakening the bird man, didn't it?

3. There's your female ace and her equally skilled male counterpart; only this time, they're already lovers, and they're both on the "enemy's" side, in Lali and DD. [And boy, did they both die gruesome deaths!]

4. And of course, if you're gonna have anything Macross, you've got to have a scene in which a big-ass alien ship fires a big-ass gun and obliterates a bunch of ships in spectacular fashion, which we got. Straight-up peeled them destroyers!

But hey, at least Roy lived all the way through this one--I'll take that as a small victory! :D

Sure, there are inconsistencies with the "official" Macross timeline [i thought Destroids didn't come online 'til 2007, VF's until '09?]. True, the mecha did in some ways look more advanced than those that came "after" them in Macross [the Cheyenne looked like a really-advanced Tomahawk/Spartan cross]. Okay, so there are plotholes you could drive a pickup through [like, why would the Anti-UN want TF mecha anyway? did they have access to Ataria Island post-'99 too?]. Yes, there are some parts that don't make sense; like if the VF-0's use turbofans "tuned to the max" 'cause thermonukes aren't available yet, how the h-ll did Shin fly the 0D underwater? I do kinda wish the CG could blend a little closer with the hand drawn--maybe it's the color palettes used, or something. But all-in-all, I won't knock it. I got to see VF's in amazing detail, doing amazing things, which for a Valkyrie lover like me is one helluva good fix.

Now obviously, some of these are self-answering questions, I know. Why did the Anti-UN need TF mecha? So there'd be somebody for the Valkyrie pilots to fight, of course! Yes, I realize a lot of these things are plot-device concerned.

Was the SV-51 meant to be seen as superior to the VF-0? I know Lali and DD scoffed at them when they learned of them in the series; but they seemed pretty evenly matched in all the combat scenes. Naturally, I'm biased towards the Valkyrie. But was the Anti-UN's technology actually superior to that of the UN gov't or something?

Mao buttraped Shin with her stealth attack. It looked so painful. You could see her fingers pushed cloth in, because it took effort for her to pull out and you could see his cheeks vibrate. OUCH!

I swear if I ever have to take care of Japanese kids or be a teacher in Japan, I'm going to insert a steel plate in my underwear, since they love to do that attack.

Hot chick > hot chick's underage sister.

She COULD have been...

Sure, there are inconsistencies with the "official" Macross timeline [i thought Destroids didn't come online 'til 2007, VF's until '09?].

The VF-1 rollout was SUPPOSED to happen earlier, but they didn't have the engines ready. Development started well before '09, and the VF-0 was a fork of VF-1 development. Remember, it wasn't a mass-production aircraft, just a testbed.

Okay, so there are plotholes you could drive a pickup through [like, why would the Anti-UN want TF mecha anyway? did they have access to Ataria Island post-'99 too?].

Transformation capacity adds signifigant look-cool factor, thereby increasing performance. Similar concept to real-world "stickercharging." :p

More likely, they had a spy that got information on the VF project. They didn't know why, but dammit, of the UN needed it, then so did they. Said spy probably also stole a lot of data, saving them much R&D.

Yes, there are some parts that don't make sense; like if the VF-0's use turbofans "tuned to the max" 'cause thermonukes aren't available yet, how the h-ll did Shin fly the 0D underwater?

I hated that part. No attempt at justification whatsoever.

Frigging water-burning jet engines...

Oh yeah, I forgot about that part; in fact, I tried to forget that. What's that game called? Doesn't matter. I know, it owes to cultural differences and what-not--but straight up, to the honorable and good people of Japan: seriously, y'all need to stop that sh-t. Man, that'd be like, grounds for starting a fight in some cultures. I suppose in others, it'd get you a date.... :p
