Man I was just cleaning my shelf and i had forgotten these Garlands had a disintegrating shoulder problem cause it hadn't gotten me..

Ha.. I picked him up and his right arm fell to the floor. So I look at the left arm to see what I'm gonna have to do to fix it and that one comes off in my hand... So a quick search led me here.

VF5SS I just ordered a red and a white set on Shapeways. Looks like you may save my toy here. Also looks like I need to figure out how to get started in 3d object design!! This is great!

Thanks!!

Just got a used Proto-Garland - and I can certainly confirm the brittle plastic, everywhere.

Probably was not a good idea to get something like this used.

• Handle bars loose in box

• Hip broke on first touch

• Back leg hose snapped off at the ends - then broke in half

• Other leg hoses cracked

• Orange visor in front of rider will not stay up - keeps sliding down

• Right index finger snapped as I tried to put it in the trigger area

( realize now they forgot to make the index / trigger finger have the ability to go into the trigger like the VF-1 )

• Right thumb snapped off

• Left thumb snapped off

s h e e s h --- Snapped some pics while I was snapping parts off . . .

Panel lined and detailed it up. Usually do not do that kind of thing, but I did not feel at all like I was tarnishing a mint toy. Its held together with tape and bubblegum now!

The little bolts look much better in metallic - as does the front wheel hubs with the details brought out.

Was able to drill out hip and carefully repair with small screw. Scew cap very obvious though. No worries, will match when I have to repair the other side I'm sure.

Was also able to use micro screws to fix thumbs.

I will not be able to raise the back calf jets ever due to the brittle tubes - bummer.

Will have to look at this like owning an old MG, something that needs constant tweaking and repair.

Great sculpt and attempt - but poor materials. Needs a V2 . . .

Yeah, awesome looking but total fail as a toy.

Just picked one up! (i know, i'm a little late)

It doesn't have the shoulder bar issue, but it does have a broken shoulder joint where it connects on the other side of the tire.

Trying to get more now =)

I realize that this is akin to thread-necromancy, but I am in great need of your help.

Several years ago I was able to buy the Garland Operations Unit toy from Yamato Toys. It is the red, white and brown version. (1/15 scale) After the fact I found that there were a lot of issues with certain hinges/joints not holding up. Alas, I found one.... two actually. The shoulder assembly cracked and now the arm barely hangs on. BUT the biggest problem I had was the "Swing arm" that holds the half-wheel assembly and swings back around to form the left shoulder...

photo_19.jpg

The peg broke and now the shoulder is only held in place with the magnets.. The model is able to be transformed, but the "play" value is greatly diminished.

I read a post where Yamato was really good with replacement parts, but now I cannot find them online. Do they still exist? Does anybody know if there are replacement parts available anywhere?

I really need your help.

Yamato USA sent me replacement parts many years ago even though I live in Australia. You could try contacting them, but I don't like the chances of them still having any. Those toys were released about a decade ago.

There are a few upcoming Garland toys you could consider over the woeful Yamato version.

Thank you for the reply... I was afraid the thread was too far gone.

What are the other toys that you mentioned? 1/15th scale?

Can you send me a link?

Hi. These toys have been discontinued for at least a decade and Yamato toys no longer exists as a company, so your chances of finding factory replacement parts is extremely slim.

That said, there are 3D printed swing arm replacements available on shapeways designed by board memeber VF5SS that should work:

http://www.shapeways.com/product/85MQ9F2T7/mz-23-garrand-set?optionId=41038739&li=user-profile

as for upgrading to newer toys; there are three new Garland toys currently in development. the first is the non-scale EX Gokin from Fewture: http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=42181

it looks gorgeous but it's really expensive: http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?scode=FIGURE-017927

there's also a 1/24 scale Garland coming from Arcadia (the successor company to the now defunct Yamato): http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=42785

and just recently freeing anounced a 1/24 scale E=X Garland from megazone23 part 3: http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=43982

For those interested in beating a dead horse like me ^_^

Looks like this seller on YJ has a 3D printed? replacement part on the Proto Garland he is auctioning.
I have no idea how he separated that piece. I'm going to examine mine, and if I find out how I will let you guys know.

If anyone that knows Japanese and has a YJ account the auction is here:
Garland Auction YJ

I would be down with a group buy of this part if it would be possible.

Not sure if this thread is closed or not. Due to the "human malware" going around and being quarantined in home, I had some time to pull out my Yamato Garlands and try to fix them.  I decided to go ahead and design my own swing arm to replace the diecast ones with the broken pin (I just had a hard time swallowing the $20 one on shapeways).

Busted out the ol' micrometer, took some measurements, fired up TinkerCAD, and surprisingly I was able to get to a ~75% solution on the first 3d model (and I'm no CAD specialist by any means).  I then went through several further small iterations until I came out with one that made all the clearances.  There is still some room for sanding to fit the curvature of the rest of the Garland body, but this final version should fit the bill right off the printer.

Now, on to the disintegrating shoulders (*sigh*)....

OMG, I wish you could make some ProtoGarland parts! My Yamato ProtoGarland is like 15 pieces from all the parts shattering from brittle bronze plastic.

I also need the entire shoulder housing for a regular Garland (the gray plastic) as that also crumbled on my Yamatos.

6?! Wow!

Any chance a mandatory global-scale shut down might possibly give you some free time? That is...unless you are part of lifesaving infrastructure in which case your workload just went Super Saiyan

Possibly. The 3-d printing is sort of a side gig for me, but my main job is 95% work from home anyway, so the shutdown hasn't really affected me yet. On the other hand, if clients start getting worried about the economy and get nervous about spending money where it isn't absolutely necessary, then yes, I might find myself with some free time there.

OK so I went ahead and got the broken shoulder socket piece finally designed.  Again it was a ~75% solution right off the bat, and then the last 25% was refining and getting the clearances...this part unfortunately takes a majority of the time and LOTS of print attempts (plus my OCD wanting to get it perfect doesn't help either).  But, that is the cool thing about 3D printers though: you can iterate pretty quickly. I printed all the test pieces with the low quality settings (thicker layer height and very low infill density) to reduce the print time.

My Garland's shoulder crumbled right in the socket piece that clamps onto the wheel's shoulder joint. So my printed shoulder joint version just extends the socket depth back out to "grab" the shoulder peg.

Caution: I did break some of the pegs in the shoulder wings (?) to get to the shoulder socket unfortunately (I did manage to save one major peg though).  The two outer halves are glued together from the factory. I recommend using a razor blade to separate and avoid cutting or breaking the pegs; It also doesn't help that the original plastic is so ridiculously brittle. Once I'm satisfied with the final joint assembly, I will probably glue the shoulder wing back together.

Next step is to increase the print quality and try a few different materials (I used PLA on the test pieces; may try ABS and/or PETG to see which works/prints best)

Wow nicely done, I would love to print replacement parts for my MZ23pt2 Garland, get it back into fighting shape. My printer is busy making a B-1 Battledroid but I might be able to poke a friend to use his resin printer to make a smoother print.

Have you posted these files anywhere for those of us with a 3D printer to try out?  I just busted out my old Yamato and man, you guys weren't joking about how brittle this plastic has become.  But yeah, both swing bars on mine busted immediately on transform, and the shoulder sockets crumbled.

I recently just got a risen printer and have been doing some awesome builds with it. If I can I'm gonna dig around and see if I can find my old busted garland if you ever decide to share those files sometime. Feel like off my printer I can get it to fit just right with almost no issues and have a working and displayable unit again.

Here's my attempt at redesigning the swing bar and shoulder.  Jesus is this toy poorly engineered....I'd upload the STL files, but as I was putting together the left arm, the pin broke off in the same damn way that the original piece did.  It just has way too much rotational stress on that point.  The swing bar really needs to be cast in metal.

The shoulders are annoying in that they are all friction fit, and friction fit parts are hard to get right on a home 3D printer.  My printer is about 7 years old with a 0.3mm precision, but the difference between something friction fitting and not friction fitting is somewhere between 0.1 and 0.25mm.  So I can eventually get this, but it is a very trial and error process.  So the arms are able to hold fine raised from the side but not being held straight out in front (holding a gun, for instance).  This also might have to do with it being next to impossible to disassemble the shoulder without breaking tabs of some sort.  There is a screw underneath the front circle bit on the shoulder(green), but everything is so tight, it's hard to notice that while trying to take it apart.  I ended up breaking the cylinder off on both my shoulders thinking it was just the peg glued in that was holding it.

Still, I think I'll be able to have it transforming tomorrow.  I just need to reprint the left swingbar, then I'll probably post more pictures and the STL files if anyone else wants to take a crack at them.

So here the garland is back in action.  As mentioned above, because of the permanent way Yamato attempted to assemble the shoulders, it is very difficult to get them apart without destroying some of the structure that keeps everything tight.  The replacement swing bar makes me very nervous, as even in ABS I can easily snap the whole thing with my fingers.  I'm curious to see how Arcadia dealt with this with the new Garland.

The two engineering problems I see are that the entire weight of the arm is supported only be the swing bar and a magnet.  And by swing bar, I mean a 1mm diameter piece of plastic or metal.  And both of these are sort of towards the bottom of the wheel.

Anyways, here are the STLs if you want to give it a try.  The shoulders are the same on each side (at least mine were), but you'll need to mirror the swing bar.

Late in the game but anyone here know how to get a replacement of this?

The shoulder housing just broke off.

Thanks in advance.

I realize this was a while ago, but the shoulder file I posted are recreations of exactly this part.

Getting it tight is another issue, and one I never completely solved.

(or is this the new Arcadia Garland that this happened to?!
:O )
