What Current Anime Series Are You Watching?

up next... my planned re-fresher marathon of MS Nadesico. :)

That sounds cool; I loved that show. B))

I'm almost done with Gurren Lagann; just finished episode 20. I'm enjoying the crap out of this series. Eager to see how the whole Spiral/Anti-Spiral conflict gets resolved. ^_^

i thought it was a fitting end and a great irony, that despite her almost god-like stature she died ultimately because of all too human failings -- compassion and trust. but that is not the irony. rather, it's that she had wanted turn back from her nature to be human again. and she succeeded. in that brief time with claire and at the moment of her death, she was unquestionably human.

i was stunned by her abrupt death. even when the scene reminded me of the optimus vs megatron final batle, even when the screen panned to show her adversary picking up the sword again, i was thinking Teresa would be able to parry this and still deliver the coup de grace. that speaks volumes of how they developed this character. in being human she had let her guard down and trusted completely. i was in disbelief as she fell, i was like WTF... oh my sweet Teresa..

had she died after a long rocky balboa duel to the finish, or even if she died a sacrificial death, the effect would have been different and i would argue, the emotional impact much less. the abruptness made it unexpected, and intensified the emotion by concentrating it in one stab straight through the heart. that her brief time with claire was her happiest was little consolation, but was poignant and strangely uplifting.

i would've wanted to see more of Teresa, i wanted to know more of her story, but that was not to be. if they ever do a spin-off telling of how Teresa became a claymore, her escapades, and how she came to be Teresa of the Faint Smile, i will be the first to line up at the counter.

read the manga at onemanga.com

she has some mini series there... how she killed number 2... how reckless shes was when just started etc

anyway just finished episode 4 of Mnemosyne. hehehe! nice anime to watch when you dont have anything else.

wow! thanks for that lead. i immediately hopped over to the site and read the first chapter of the teresa mini-series. it's so nice to see her again

i am now even more amazed at how they crisply and accurately adapted the manga into anime (at least animation-wise). this will tide me over nicely as i hope against hope that they make a second series..

it was kinda funny when i started reading and the frames seemed to be all jumbled up... then i remembered i was supposed to read right to left

I have kinda run out of series to watch. In the past week I have watched both RaXephon and Zone of Enders and I have already seen many Sci-fi mecha anime that I can't really find more to see. I do watch Gintama from time to time as it updates slowly and of course I watch Macross and Code Geass, but they are progressing slowly. Its amazing that I am moronic enough to watch an entire 26 episode series one after another in a single run. I need more suggestions as I have seen most of the Gundams, Eva and Macross as well as others like Heroic age which I liked. I do tend to stray from the super robot type shows however.

Right now i'm watching Samurai Champloo. Great series so far. ^_^

I don't understand why Samurai Champloo didn't do better... such a good show. Maybe there's just no market for J-hop.

As for myself...

I tried watching Aquarion last week. Well, I made it through 4 episodes and think I have more DVD's coming from Netflix. Does it get any better?

I started watching Gurren Lagann and was loving it... until episode 9 or so... I'm up to episode 13 or 14 and its still good... but it feels like I've seen it all before... and I don't even watch that much anime.

Come baaaaaaaaaack Frontier...

haha, trust me, with gurren lagann, there is definitely something that you haven't seen before. in fact, up to now, the idea of it still boggles my mind. :)

for me, it's a series that gets better with each episode. just like the main mecha. :)

nevertheless, i will join you in your heartfelt appeal... come back Frontier!!!!

Same thing happened to me... I started watching it several months ago, and drifted away from the series around episode 12 or 13. I think that after the monumental events of episodes 7 and 8, the story seems like it's starting to stagnate. The introduction of Nia and the re-defining of Simon's role seems kind of anti-climatic.

I think you'll be happy if you stick with it, though. The new roles and relationships turn out to be pretty important, and for me, it all pays off in the end. I just finished watching the series today, and all I can say is "ROW-ROW... FIGHT DA POWA!" :D

The pace picks up again, and the story takes some interesting turns. I can honestly say this is one of the best series that I've seen in a long time!

I managed to finish it, and the last arc really is pretty good. I really dug the style throughout and how over the top it was.

Way too GAR for me I think, though. Simon was so GAR for Kamina the whole series it made my head spin. And Yoko seriously needed way more attention. Definitely a fun ride, tho, if shallow.

Just finished watching Last Exile, it was a good steam punk anime although the ending is kinda rushed with many element left unexplained, but still a great anime ^_^

Anyone can direct me to another steam punk genre anime?

with that, i thoroughly agree! it needed much more yoko love. :)

mnemosyne 5 is out. a number of deaths this outing, and also more sex. seems death and sex are quite intertwined in this series. some revelations, but yet more mysteries layered on top of an already perplexing plot. the story seems to go deeper, but with just one more episode to go, i fear this might be one of those stories that just suddenly end leaving you with a lot loose of ends to ponder on. i'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I just accidentally stumbled on a GONZO series called Blassreiter. Apparently, Studio GONZO has purchased space on youtube, and is putting up entire episodes there as they air in Japan.

Link-

Here's what the site has to say about the show-

"As the dark cloud of apocalypse shadows over the world, stigmatized heroes arise....for reasons yet unknown...

The story takes place in a city in Germany sometime in the near future.

A puzzling incident occurs where a corpse rises up in the form of a strange creature and attacks people.

The appearance of the monstrous undead shakes the nation as horrified people look on the incident as a sign of "the coming of demons."

The city also witnesses the rise of that can incarnate into demons at will. Each and every bearer of this special ability, while being condemned as demons, uses his/her power for different ends...

Some use the power for what they believe as justice.

Some lose themselves in the immensity of their powers and abuse them.

Some use their power to realize their ambitions.

Some use it for the purpose of revenge.

However, all are eventually burdened with the same overpowering fate: to fight in a Battle Royale in which the lives of all "demons" are ultimately jeopardized...

Each uses their powers to survive, and to fulfill their individual purposes.

However, using the special power comes with a price: their human minds gradually begin to debilitate...

An unrelenting and devastating story of young men and women racked with solitude and agony. "

Anyone out there seen this yet?

During my exile, i finished watching Kurenai. Pretty nice slice-of-life about a teenage bodyguard charged with looking after a noble Japanese girl from her family who wants to keep her imprisoned at home.

Sadly it diverges from its manga/novel source material. It would seem they removed the "shounen-action" elements from the anime making it more "drama" so the differenc causes it to seem quite strange in terms of the storyline.

But still a pretty good watch. Murasaki is cute. ;)

In addition to Macross Frontier (of course), I've started re-watching Gurren Lagann. It's amazing how many little things you can miss on just one viewing!

I've also started watching the Yoroshiku fansubs of the old Starship Troopers anime. Great show! ^_^ The music is kind of dated, but I'm really enjoying seeing the powered-armor in action!

I just dumped about a gig and a half of Real Drive off my hard drive. It's not a bad show, but it just doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I'll likely continue to watch the new episodes as they come out, but overall I expected a whole lot more from a Production IG/Shirow co-production.

On the other hand, the three Baccano direct-to-dvd episodes were fun, and wrapped up a couple of loose ends from the tv series. It's too bad this show never found a wider audience.

Then there's the Galaxy Railways OVAs. I had enjoyed the first season, but gave up on season two about 10 episodes in. These OVAs, while mildly entertaining, seem more like Galaxy Express 999 OVAs, guest starring the crew from Railways.

Bracing myself to tackle Turn-A Gundam.

After all these years, the design of the suit is finally starting to grow on me, and the idea of unifying all of the Pre-Turn-A Gundam storylines into one universe is kind of intriguing...

just watched the Laughing Man re-cut of GiTS and thoroughly enjoyed it. i don't know why some of the reviews complain that it's a butchered version of the series. i've watched both (albeit saw SAC a couple of years ago and not recently) and thought the editing was done rather well and made for a tight story. i do admit that subs were vastly superior on the Laughing Man cut that i watched as compared to the poor subs on the SAC version i had, which might have influenced my opinion.

thinking now of rewatching SAC (both gigs) but i'm holding out for their blu-ray release. in the meantime, can anyone recommend which fansub group did a decent job on SAC?

I remember reading somewhere (so you can take it with a grain of salt if you want to :p ) that the regular SAC dvd's were so well mastered that when people started comparing them to the BD versions, there apparently wasn't that much of a difference. That doesn't mean you have to keep the regular discs, but that you might not be blown away by the BD's.

As for which fansub group was better, 1st Gig was subbed by a lot of groups until Bandai shut them all down about halfway through the series. Of these, AonE were usually rated the best one. The series was then picked up by some guy calling himself the Laughing Man  and he completed the series. If I remember correctly, his subs were also pretty good.

For 2nd Gig, the only fansubber I remember is also Laughing Man who subbed about a dozen, then had to stop due to personal reasons. He then passed on his title to another person who completed the series, albeit very slowly. I don't remember how good this new guy was since my patience ran out and I watched the HK bootleg rips. Oh God, those were terrible  and I wish I had waited for Laughing Man 2 to finish.

The Shade

P.S. Don't ask me how I remember all that. I think this was due to my visiting the LM's webpage every one in a while to find out when the next episode would be release and reading his weekly updates.

Going to finish watching Odoru Daisousasen (Bayside Shakedown) tonight. For a live-action Japanese Cop Drama, it was pretty good. Not sure when I'm going to be watching the movies, but I'm sure it'll be a special treat.

For my next anime, I will be going really retro and watching Future Boy Conan by Hayao Miyazaki. I'm interested in seeing what he could do with a TV series produced during the mid 70's.

thanks shade. i'm aware the BD release might not offer a significant visual boost, but i have a lame excuse to go with BD anyway: save shelf space  if my 5-disc Bladerunner BD set is any indication, i'll save at least half the thickness of the box sets. of course, this hinges on the assumption that the BD release of a completed series will be crammed into fewer discs. but like i said, it's just a lame excuse to shift my collection to BDs

finished watching the Individual Eleven SAC re-cut, and i have to say, this didn't fare too well in the editing. it's rather ironic too considering the 2nd Gig was supposed to have been a more standalone episode structure which should have facilitated the editing. the main casualty was the Motoko-Kuze relationship angle, which this re-cut had a very light touch on, perhaps too light. it ended up lacking the emotional oomph when revelation time came.

but from a suspense/thriller angle, this recut came through rather well. stripped of the side stories, Kuze's meandering motivation became clearer, and though some of the subtleties of Ghoda's actions were lost, it conversely made it easier to piece together his complex plan.

again, i'm extremely thankful the subs were very well done. the HK bootleg SACs were really terrible and i swore never to touch them again.

Finished They Are My Noble Masters a few days back: it's decent, but I didn't see a lot of comedy animes so far therefore it's difficult to compare...

I'm onto Outlaw Star atm: it looks like the standard sci-fi/space op' anime with lots of action and comedy, and reminds me of Space Adventure Cobra sometimes. Overall, it's not bad but not unforgettable either...

After having been on a bit of a retro kick, I'm currently watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

When I can figure out which way round I'm supposed to watch the episodes in. Any one here know how to divide Pi by a Prime Number so I can know which one to watch next? :)

No bracing required. After a couple of episodes you will love it. Really. :) And the "unifying all Gundams" isn't really a big part of the show, really.

Macross Frontier of course

and Blassreiter woohoo episode 12 and waiting for more!!! WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!

The Paladin mechs are sweet in that show! Reminds me a lil of Megazone with the whole transforming bike idea.

http://www.toysdaily.com/discuz/thread-67414-1-1.html

That would look really nice playin with a Garland!!

Thanks for posting that, I went off to look for clips off that thing and ended up watching all 14 episodes, quite an impressive show considering I was expecting another cliched superpowered human nonsense fest.

Just started with the ridiculously named Birdy The Mighty Decode since ppl on the web are singing praises for it. Not bad for a 1s episode. Some scantily clad alien female (duh) investigator is chasing galactic criminals on the run. She goes undercover in a backward planet known as Earth and when she was about to arrest the criminal some hapless geek boy gets decapitated by her BUSTERRRR PUNCHHHH and somehow i assume to keep him alive put his conciousness into her body.

Anime features some impressive CG and 2D blending and some awesome fight choreography. Its like watching a lower-budget version of Diebuster. Will see how the next few episodes go to see if it deserves its own thread.
