What's that about?

Wikipedia entry: The Cockpit

Kamikaze Images

I recall seeing the VHS of "The Cockpit" in 1999, but I didn't pick it up since I was strapped for money at the time. AFAIK, there never has been a R1 DVD release of this show. I heard some good things about it, too. It's essentially 3 short, seperate stories set late in WWII. 1 of a German pilot, the other 2 being Japanese.

I'm amazed Zipang actually made it the US. It's much more introspective than most military shows, with only a few beats of action. What I liked most about it, it doesn't seem to follow any cliches of the time travel genre, and concentrates on creating its own alternate WWII world. The ending is a bit rushed, mainly due to the fact that the manga spans many volumes and I believe is still being published.

Planetes straddles the line between making a comedy of itself in the first half, but as the series gets further and further along, it picks a more dramatic path. If you've read the 5 volume manga, you'll know a fair amount of the story points, but expect the tv series to be much lighter than the hard-edged sci-fi manga. That being said, the production values are superb, right down to all the R1 dvd extras (many of the discs have an interview with a NASA employee commenting on the real-life aspects of the show)

A fansub of 1993's The Cockpit just popped up online. For anybody who hasn't seen this, you owe it to yourselves to check it out. I just wish the DVD would go back into print.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been looking for it since last year to no avail.

Flag: I've seen it up to ep 6 and I like it a lot. The camera viewpoint gimmick/narrative is done very well and the story being told is a refreshingly mature look on intervention type warfare as far as animes go.

Zipang looks cheaply made but has a nice introspective story to it as uminoken pointed out. The cast is wellrounded and the way they react to the situation they're put in is near lifelike sofar as I can judge. I highly recommend this "what if"-scenario based anime.

The anime has made me eager to check out the manga, but I haven't been able to read it yet.

Watched Whisper of The Heart yesterday: not the best Ghibli though well done as always, but the pace was a bit slow for me...

Mr March -> Planetes is very good, definitely one of the most hard-science anime of these last years, as well as a nice thought on the future of space colonisation: overally one of the best show I saw in years, don't miss it!

uminoken, T.V., gui and wolfx,

Thanks everyone. I keep hearing good stuff about theses three and this is getting me even more interested. Especially Planetes, which continues to be praised everywhere I go on the net. After reading your posts here, I sought out some more reviews and I think I'm hooked. I'm going to try all three and see what happens. I think I might dive into Planetes first, though I suppose I should get my hands on Zipang rather quickly before the stock depletes.

Methinks I shall have to look up this Planetes.

Capt Hungry, I just got the Godannar thinpak set last week, I hadn't seen the ending before and was surprised by how good it is. Glad to see someone else saw through the soft core fluff!

How many episodes are there? I've been watching via On Demand and I think I saw that episode 6 is now available. I like the series (a little too much yelling sometimes though). The mecha designs are cool and who doesn't like the Gainax jiggle..........

In this same vein of mecha/busty girls anime, I would love to see Gravion and Gravion Zwei.

There's 26 epsiodes and it's a super robo show so the shouting only intensifies towards the end, but then so do the sexual references, lol.

The dub for this is fantastic, ADV's open booth dub really paid off with the result that this is the most natural sounding dub I have ever heard. I really hope Gurren Lagann gets this treatment.

I liked the end, not sure what else you could want from a short series. There's more than enough closure.

That's the problem. It was too short and ending too adrupt. They had much more content to go through from the manga. The anime decided to come up with half baked ending and all was well with the world again. Typical manga->anime compression sickness here.

That never doesn't happen with Manga to anime adaptations, it's just one of those universal laws. It's best to treat both individually.

After watching the Godannar thinpak set last week I got the Gungrave one yesterday morning after spotting it in a shop the other day reminded me of it's existence.

I went into this completely blind, buying it only because it was by Yashurio Nightow and I'd heard a few good comments about it overall.

Well apart from the first episode it's been nothing like what I was expecting which was an ott supernatural shoot em up with Nightows trademark gimmickry weaponry and elaborate costumes.

Instead I've been presented with an increasingly gripping and well written mafia drama that really shows you the characters progression and motives.

Every now and then I kinda wish it would get back to being the aforementioned ott shoot em up that was done so well in the first episode but the mafia drama is overall better then what I was expecting.

I hope Nightow can manage another new anime some day soon.

Actually IIRC Nightow has no creative input in the Gungrave anime. When Red Entertainment decided to make the Gungrave game, they commissioned Nightow for the character designs. I don't think he came up with the scenario.

But yeah i liked how the anime gave Gungrave more meat. The game was a pure shoot-em-up with only some semblance of a story. The 1st episode bored me to death somehow...probably because the action was kinda boring and OTT. The soundtrack in the OP was very experimental and i thought this was gonna be a train wreck. But I was pleasantly surprised. ;) Loved it.

Just finished watching Rose of Versailles. Not a current series by any means, but it's one of the few series that pulled me in from the first episode and never let me go! Would love for someone to release it in the states, but don't see that happening. Currently still watching Gundam 00, have about ten episodes to go on Romeo X Juliet and just watched the first episode of Heroic Age. Put Captain Harlock on hiatus while I was watching Versailles, not sure I want to pick it back up. Now trying to decide if I should start watching Metal Armor Dragonar or Heavy Metal L-Gaim.

Based on what?

*LOL'ING VERY VERY HARD*

A school drama story with a history versus a character growth driven story..... Character Growth FTW, every single time! Sorry but right now Planetes just looks more polished than M:F does (from the plot base through the character designs).

------

Just finished the ICE ova and found it to be a nice little rainy day piece of forgettable mind fock. Also got through M7 ep 25-30. It just takes far too long to develop to ep 25-27 (which kicks alot of arse) and should've been at this point in the story at around 15-20. I still can't recommend M7 to anyone but the most die hard Macross fan as it's just bad anime. Lots & lots of wasted fleet design.

@CrusherJ, watch Dragonar first it's pretty good! :)

Really silly thing to say, we know very little about what is going on in Frontier. And what does Planetes have to do with it? Reasoning FTL.

  • 3 weeks later...

I just started watching Bamboo Blade. Pretty funny series about a poverty stricken Kendo teacher in school who had a challenge from his sempai to form an all girl's kendo team and if he wins he gets free sushi for a year.

Well anyway in episode 7, Tama-chan was rewarded "Something very rare. Something nobody has and everyone wants." according to the teacher. This was what he given her.
