New game law in California........

As a kid, I got to watch whatever, play whatever game (mind you we didn't have anything "that" violent back then) etc, and I turned out fine. Hell, I went to a theater to go see Roboocp with my mom when I was 9, blood splatting, curse words flying, people dying left & right, the ED 209, tities in the locker room, etc. And you know what? It was a farting awesome movie. Did I go out and kill a cop, turn him into a Robot, try to take over a coorperation, snort lines of coke off of hookers, etc? No, I just enjoyed an awesome movie for what it was. I also saw Terminator when I was 5, didn't go and try to start the robot apocolypse either. I'm sure you get the point.

Normal kids don't have reactions from violent games, its the crazy shits who would kill people anyway. Go do manditory psychological tests in schools, and leave the rest of us alone.

You can't place 100% of the responsibility on the parents.  That is ridiculous.  Sure parent's should be ones keeping on top of things and police their own children but not all parents are created equally and retailers should bear some of the responsibility.

I do blame them, I worked in retail, if the parents cannot open their eyes to a child's problem, then it is their fault. If parents cannot be mature and responsible enough to take care of their child, why did they have kids in the first place?

I gotta admit for those that do have a problem with children not based by environment, but within the child mentally or psychologically (not caused by the entertainment industry or parental behavior), I can't blame them for that.

The way I see it is that we have the ESRB and most retailers DO NOT repsect it.  I have seen this first hand, so they should be fined for not follwoing the ESRB.  The ESRB is not a governing body nor does it have any pull but does serve a need that parent's can use as a guide.

um retailers respect the ESRB, however, we do not police customers, it breaks their ammendment right to privacy. We just warn them.

Unfortunately,  mmany parents still think that games are still Pacman and Mario titles and have no idea of the amount of violence and sex, that many games have.  I still play games because I like them and how the industry has matured the field.  yet, I also play them and keep up to date to see what my kids want to play and decide if it's suitable for them or not.

Times have changed, and I see the parents do buy these games and understand the difference, because most of them are my age or older. Parents are informed enough to know what titles are being bought and do ask questions.

Regardless, we need all the help we can get, especially in liberal states like California, New York, etc.... which are not family friendly.  If kids want to play games, they will....by any means necessary, so road blocks like this new law, can only help.  Hell, they should add to the law and include penalties for parent's who buy their kids inappropriate games and call it the "I'm a $tupid or non-caring parent law".

One of the many reason for that is because they are playing into the parents fear. You need a way to control the kids actions and the government has found a way by releasing the responsibility of morality away from the parents and imposed it on a law. (I gotta read 1984 again.... 1+1=3)

Yes, kids will play the games any means necessary, the only way to break most of these is to ensure to take away their source of entertainment, be there when they are playing games, play the games with them, reduce the amount of time being played, question their taste in games, and ask if they understand the difference between reality and fantasy.

335098[/snapback]

IMHO, I think the kids and even adults who act out violence harbor the tendency, and will carry out violent deeds with or without the influence of games. Violence is inherent in our psychology, esp in males. History, regardless of age or society teaches us that. I see games as a stress reliever, an escape, where one can vicariously act out without doing actual harm to anyone. I think this is the case for most people who play violent games...the game fills the "need", for lack of a better term. The people that take these actions into the real world and visit their fantasies on others will or would have done so regardless. Ultimately, we've seen various media blamed for the violent or just stupid (ala "Jackass" series and movie) actions of some people. The blame rests on the individual. The only exception I see in this is if the violent person has a mental illness or retardation sufficient to limit his moral judgment. Should parents let kids play games of this nature? Probably not, but every kid is different and the parents should understand their child's maturity, personality, and social influences, and make the call. There are a lot of good kids playing violent games who have never committed any violent act. It's unfair to punish the many for the sins of the few...which is one of the things that irks me to no end about the military, but that's another discussion. In the end, I think retailers should respect and follow the laws already in place, parents should do what they can to at least know what their kids are up to( it IS difficult these days..I'm not a parent myself, but I work with alot of them, and my sister has a kid and a stepson, who plays violent games and is a great kid), and society should stop coddling those who do carry out violent crimes and punish them with greater, more character building punishments...turning big rocks into little rocks worked well for a lot of years. My final thought is that if everyone who played violent games, watched violent movies, or listened to violent music acted these things out, we'd have an international epidemic of uncontrollable violence...but I think basically most of us just want a nice quiet killing spree letting the photons and pixels fall where they may.

Parents are just afraid to say "no" to their little brats and want others to look out for them.

Where I live people are concerned about people driving fast near homes and schools.  There are so many traffic signs it's confusing.  When ever some people talk about fixing the confusing traffic rules some parent group or another step forward and scream "Won't some body think of the childern?"

Won't some body think about us adults  who think it's retarded to drive this way?  No I don't want to run over someone's kid but there would be nothing to worry about if a parent just watched the little bastards.  Yes people are morons who will let there kids play out in the middle of the street.  Instead of doing their job and watching their kids they expect society to watch out for them.

Same thing goes for the kids form of entertainment.    Hasn't nearly every game or movie that some parents flip have out about been clearly marked as not for kids?  Ratings or not titles and subject matter gives you a pretty good clue of what's for kids.  I've been in a video store once and saw a kid pick up a MA rated game.  I've pointed out I think that's too old for you.  Then saw the clerks sale the kid the game.  You can say lets make a law so the clerk won't sale the game or a law that will ban all such games from being made.  However, who should really be looking out for the kid?  The parent who should see what their kid brought home and kick their asses for doing so.

I'm a selfish arrogant a-hole of adult who doesn't give a crap about your little pissed faced bastard spawn of satan.  If I see your little bastard is in a burning building I might risk my neck to save their worstless life but I'm not gonna give up my fun cause you don't want to watch your waste of DNA.

That aisde, some one asked what it was like in other countrys. Well here in the UK it's heading pretty much the same way, we are however fortunate that Guns are nowhere near so prevalent.

None the less, politiocal correctness made corporal punishment a big no, no a while back and kids know this. There are some real spoilt brats around whose parents either don't care or are too afraid/ignorant to bring them up properly.

I as a kid used to get bored and hit my sister, my mum always gave us both one hell of a smack and not always on the arse either.

Then video games finally rolled into the UK and we all (me, my sis and my mum) liked making Sonic whiz around loops too much to get bored enough to hit each other.

These days, my younger brother is even more of a games freak then I ever was but I keep in touch with the industry so my mum always asks me which games are suitable and which aren't.

He wanted Killer 7 last month, I gave her a brief idea of what it included and she quickly decided against it. He got a Starwars game instead which he semed happy with.

I'm all for punishing parents who don't keep their jackass kids in line. But I don't really see anything wrong with this, stores aren't supposed to be selling these games to kids, and in the end this law could shift more blame to the parents. Now if a kid wants to get a game like Manhunt, then the parent would have to buy it for them, meaning the parent would now know it has violence and what not in it. It also looks like they're strating to realize games aren't just for kids, so companies might be more willing to push the envelope on what content they put in their games.

It's not like they're banning the game outright or anything, so now that violent games are treated in a similar manner as cigs or booze, so now if some de de dee parent tries to sue a game company because their kid is a out of control little sh!t the company can just say, "well who bought it for him?"

Regardless, we need all the help we can get, especially in liberal states like California, New York, etc.... which are not family friendly.

Indeed that's why states like Massachusetts, New York and California have the lowest rates of Divorce, domestic violence, and teen pregnancy. No "family values."

The way I see it is that we have the ESRB and most retailers DO NOT repsect it. I have seen this first hand, so they should be fined for not follwoing the ESRB. The ESRB is not a governing body nor does it have any pull but does serve a need that parent's can use as a guide.

Well we have the MPAA (which sets movie ratings) and there's no government sanctions against letting minors into R rated movies, and haven't been for quite some time. Society hasn't collapsed from kids buying tickets to one movie and sneaking into the latest R rated blood fest.

They must be hiding under a rock cosidering all the "training killers" style press video games get.

People have always found some scapegoat to blame thier crap parenting on. In the '50s and '60s it was comic books, in the '70s and '80s Heavy Metal and Rap music, now it's video games. Parents are always going to try to find something other than themselves to blame after they let little Johnny get away with one to many things, but it always comes back to them, they're the ones who set the rules they're the ones who determine what thier own kids can get away with. Frankly corporal punishment doesn't have to be a part of that, just setting boundaries (my parents never beat me they just made sure that I knew I couldn't get away with pulling any poo).

I am Italian. I know it is a declining nation peoples don't care about, but whoo our premier is friend of your president! :p

IIRC the last case of violence blamed on movies was a (former?) policeman who shot his divorced wife years ago. They said there were posters of Rambo in his house (although I had the impression journalists were just trying to impress the public). Anyway, he was an adult, and he got a gun because he was a policeman. Aside from hunters I think in Italy people aren't generally interested in guns; owing a weapon in itself may not be bad, but I mantain that proliferation of weapons may cause a rise in certain types of incident (*). This doesn't mean we don't have killing done with other means. The story that shocked the most was that of the two teens Erika and Omar. With the assistance of her fiancé Omar Erika killed her mother repeatedly stabbing her with a knife and then drowned in the bath her little brother because it was a witness. It seems Erika also wanted to kill her father. To the police she told her mother and her brother were killed by two Albanese, but after a while the police discovered the truth. It deeply shaken Italian beliefs about mothers and their children. Conversely, there were cases of mothers killing their children - we got a famous one in those years. It happened in a small mountain town called Cogne. It became famous namely because the outcome is still unclear: the mother was found guilty and sentenced as such in a first rate trial (I don't know the correct translations, but our judicial system is different from the anglo-saxon one; after the first rate trial there are three other rates of trial, I think), but the defense is still insisting she was framed despite every evidence they offered was proven to be manipulated. Honestly I think she is guilty - but kids killing their parents seem just a tad off. Now they don't know what was to be blamed, it could be either Titanic or Lunapop (an Italian pop group with lyrics like "how beautiful driving a Vespa". Marilyn Manson, eat your heart out!), but there was no explanation for what Erika and Omar did.

(*) In Italy we have laws about "excess of defense". You can't defend yourselves with a weapon more powerful than those of your aggressors. There was a case of a shopkeeper who was already robbed several times, so he bought a gun and shot the next robber. It turned out that the robber's gun was a fake, se he technically did commit a crime. Now, obviously there are attenuating conditions so judges won't sentence him guilty, but in Italian culture this is still a serious matter.

While luckily no-one ever found a direct correlation between anime and violent crimes in Italy, there has always been a fuss on them; they said they were violent, diseducative, all made with computers, they will turn all children into robots because of their very repetitive action, watch Sailor Moon and you will grow as a gay... anyway Italian kids like them. We had Goldrake (Grendizer) that, since it was the first mecha anime shown, remained an all time favorite, Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger (aired later than Grendizer), other Nagai's shows including Devilman, Tigerman, Hokuto no Ken, Saint Seiya... Saint Seiya is another all time favorite because of its dubbing. It was not a faithful dubbing, but characters spoke lines that were quotations of italian poets. It gives an incredible epic feeling that can't be described.

Then one day in the 80ies we were told Japanese robot anime were too violent (well, it was true) so the editorial line of Italian TV (it was Fininvest, owned by Berlusconi) chose to stop both buying new robot anime and showing old ones. Old robot anime kind of disappear except in some lucky local TV that probably aired them illegally; the last ones we saw was Gundam, if you don't count Robotech which is still considered OK. Saint Seiya and Hokuto no Ken are still rerun frequently, though, although some run had censorship of bloody scenes (we did have cases of anime censorship that were so "artsy" they were ludicrous. There was a shoujo anime where in an episode a character was about to experience her first menstruations; the episode wasn't cut, just the lines were all invented; weird, that episode in Japan was supposed to be educative :p ). Luckily Italian MTV started airing recent anime; aside from music MTV is not all that bad.

Anyway, I suggest playing soccer. What Americans call football involves a wrong kind of competition heavy on physical confrontation, and besides I think it's easier to find a soccer field, you just need something that delimitates the goals (sometimes even the penalty kick mark) and it's done, you don't even need protective gears. I think the advantage of soccer over games like cowboys and American natives is that you aren't thinking of killing your opponents. It's not that I didn't played these kind of games (I made guns with Lego and elastics), but balls are still a must. Another advantage of soccer is that you play better the more people you have, it's an inclusive game that makes you happy there are other guys around.

Now, I didn't actually play soccer that much because I have asthma, but other kids did, so at the end it became a stereotype associated with Italians, despite we haven't won a world cup for ages. There is a show called "Tourists by chance" where an Italian couple and their friends goes around the globe to visit other countries and comment their experiences. They once were in Yemen, and they were approached by Yemenite soldiers (there is piracy on their coasts, they need guards to protect people). Do you know what? When the Yemenite heard they were Italians they wanted a soccer match. Reportedly the Italians won, although I noticed the Yemenite had a trained body and the Italians seemed to eat well :)

Now, I don't guarantee soccer is the cure for all evils, but maybe it can help.

Last thing: my mother sometimes beat me with wood spoons. One of my childhood's joy was when my body broke one of those. I felt that for the rest of the day mother couldn't punish me no more, I felt that I had won on her. My family laughed at that scene. Anyway, I was seldom beaten (and that wood spoon was already half-broken), but it had its purpose.

FV

You know, if it's only people like YOU advocating "family values", it's no wonder this nation is going to hell in a handbasket. You're the one packing the sandwiches. Besides, am I mistaken or was one of the rules of this place to NOT discuss politics?

Also, I'm still waiting for proof that you've done all of this (military service, your masters degree, etc). You've not mentioned any names or places. Probably safest that way though, can't be caught in a lie if you don't try to back it. How many 9-year-olds have 50$ lying around anyways?

Not an awful lot.

And for the odd exception...

Stores that restrict sales to minors just get irate parents coming up and complaining to their cashiers because little Timmy can't by Druglord Bloodsport: Vice Titty while they plunk down the cash and vow never to shop there again.

...

Then come back later whining about how their game had boobs, drugs and violence in it and they never should have sold it to little Timmy.

Despite the large visible M rating on the front of the package, the drug use, graphic violence, and mature sexual themes content descriptors on the back of the package, the words druglord, bloodsport, and titty in the title, and the fact that they DIDN'T sell it to Timmy and attempted to explain to Timmy's parents why not at the time of purchase.

Ultimately, this legislation does nothing because PARENTS, not children, buy the games.

Too true. While growing up I knew a lot of other kids who's parents would buy them any kind of game and wouldn't know what they were about.

My parents on the other hand knew what I was getting. They would get me games and stuff that were violent, like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Doom II, etc. because they made sure I knew the difference between fantasy and reality. Besides my Mom ended up playing them more than I did, and I had to sit and watch her go on rampages in the games since there was only one computer, and my mom claimed higher priority! My mom rules.

Ultimately, this legislation does nothing because PARENTS, not children, buy the games.

My parents kept an eye on what I was playing too.

Never could persuade them that it was worth spending time on actually PLAYING, though.

Of course, that meant more game time for me, so I can't complain.

Someone should really tell MGREXX that he doesn't need to post everything he sees on Gamespot over here.

Someone should tell MGREXX a lot of things, none of them polite.

But MGREXX would just come back and explain why they were a high-school dropout and how his degrees from Imsmokinsomegoodshit University make him better than everyone else.
