I was wondering if someone who might have a copy or something of the SP2 cd. I'm not looking for the OS just the big ass update craposoft wanted you to make. I really want this to be a fast reformat so I don't want to spend up to 6 hours installing freakin' updates. <_< and like hell if I'm gonna give 20 bucks to craposoft for updates to their fauly OS...Thanks for any help you give... :D

actually, when sp2 first came around ms was giving them away for free but charging 19.99 for shipping...i assumed they were still doing that so i dunno...if no one else answers i'll send you a pm with my address so you could send me a copy...i seriously need this now since the os i have only has sp1...

sorta OT but if i buy an xp pro sp2 serial and i have a xp pro sp1 cd would the the serial still be compatable/valid?

Um no...

Technical Reason: That is just the serial number and you would still have XP w/SP1, just with XPSP2 numbers.

Moral Reason: It would be wrong, you would be stealing.

(Like that has not stopped anyone before).

Other Reason: Look at Technical Reason.

it's to fix some problems with my friend's computer...somehow everything messed up on the serials since both our serials ended up being identical (and how that happend? blame microsoft) ...and since i registered mine already MS pretty much said he was SOL...the funny thing was, his version was an oem of xp pro sp1 (which he bought on auction) and mine was a retail version of xp pro sp1.... i only asked if it was possible since i can't find xp pro sp1 anywhere now-a-days... i've looked on ebay and upon many well known and obscure online dealers and have only came up with xp pro sp2 since it has the newest service pack and all...he works in security forces in the airforce so he pretty much lives hand to mouth since he rents an appartment off base... i'm doing this for him as sort-of a late b-day present before he comes back home from iraq...

also, the real reason why i want to reformat my computer is because i uninstalled some software (forgot to back up so i could roll back if i had any problems) and it was somehow connected to some the cd audio reading and now i can just play audio cds in real player and windows media and with other programs it won't even recognize the cd, it'll see it as there's being no cd in your cd-rom drive...i wanted to convert a few (about 10) cds i've bought into high quality mp3s and i'm not able to so now...i could download the mp3s since i legally own the cds but to be honest i paid 40 dollars for a good mp3 maker and editor yet i'm only able to edit the music now so i'm pretty annoyed and have gone the drastic route...i was planning on reformating my computer simply because it's been running slow lately anyways...oh well...i guess i'll see what i can do...sorry if i offended anyone by asking that question...

I would not recommend that you use software bought from an auction, especially Operating Systems (O.S.). There is a good chance that the keys may have been illegally copied.

If you need an O.S. go to a reputable local compuer dealer, they can get you pretty good prices on OEM's. There is a catch though, you may have to buy a hard drive, mobo or processor.

Now on to the fun part... check out http://www.tigerdirect.com, xp pro w/sp2 for about $160.00 tax if applicable, plus s&h.

For your audio CD fixing, try to changing the default player, you may have to install sp1 or sp2 to do this.

To change default media player.

-Open "Control Panel"

-Open "Add/Remove program"

-Click on "Set Program access and Defaults" at the left column

-Under the heading "Choose a default media player:" choose your software.

Now to convert Cd audio to MP3.

Open Windows media player and rip official music you own in your Cd library to MP3 format.

Cool good luck with the installation... BTW, my sp2 disk came in the mail, as of the 9th and 10th of march, seemed as though I accidently click submit twice...   (submit to microsoft that is)

cool...can i have the other one then? :p

it was okay...took me 3 hours to burn all his important stuff (it sucked since i was in safe mode the whole time and some of his stuff only burnt at 12x at most) took me about an hour to do a full format and install XP...then it took me around 2 hours to install updates, install software he needed...wasn't too bad...doesn't have problems with it at all...except his cd burner has always been shitty...even when it was fresh from the factory it only burned at 24x at most, and it's a 48x  i seriously dunno what's up with it...funny thing was, windows update kept trying to install the same freakin' stuff for the video and audio

i ordered the CD...hopefully it won't take long for it to get here...

btw, i did what you said about the working with the system defaults but nothing worked...and you have to pay for mp3 ripping for windows media...i already paid for an mp3 maker and i wish to use it but it seems like i can't...ugh  oh well...my system has been running pretty slow anyways...so i might as well just bit the bullet and reformat this sucker...but after i get the sp2 disc...well thanks for the help :)

wish i had a dvd burner...i burnt 29 cd's last night and it barely made a dent in what i need off my computer <_< and now i need to look for more boxes for my cds :( i just love reformating <_<

Can't wait to hear the horror stories you have... I can see it now, a tower of CD's of all backed up hentai, downloaded mp3's, movies (Macross 7) and games..., um wait a sec. that's me. :o:huh::p:rolleyes:

Well either way good luck w/the reformat... had to reformat mine since I assumed one of my ide cables went bad and took my hard drive with it, found out it was actually my 128mb pc2100, that just went bad and there was no need to reformat drive.

BTW, you can get a dual format (not 8x dual layered) 4x dvd burner for less than $100.00

I can't seem to find an answer, so maybe someone here can verify this for me.  Does SP2 include all the updates/patches since XP came out?  Basically, does it include SP1?

pretty much does...it includes all updates from the time sp2 came out which was a few months ago...you will still have to update online to get up-to-date

btw...seems like i have to put the reformate on the back burner until sometime next week at the earliest <_< my sister wanted a friend of hers to do some stuff and i've left my computer free for her to use but has yet to come use it <_< so she needs to come and do her crap so i can do mine

NIKE! or "Just Do It!".

It should take about 3 hrs to reformat, reinstall windows, install sp2, place in all the drivers, install OpenOffice into your system, and install "other software" that you consider is important with "appropriate information backups" you made.

It will take only half the time if you just install the drivers that are backed up onto a CD, reformat and install windows, install sp2 and install OpenOffice into your system... you can install the other softwares and back ups at a later time.

You should not have to be told on when, how, and what time it is appropriate for you to service your computer. That's my feeling in a nutshell about PC's...

My sister had the same problem with me when I would tinkered around around my computer and started installing 3rd party system software that I trust (bootvis, tweakui, anti-crapware, etc), before she even got a computer... 3 yrs later, my system is still kicking arse and my sister's store bought system she got a year ago is either breaking down at the seams when it connects to the internet or certain programs are not responding the way she wants to, she does not want me to install the same programs I installed into mean that would ensure her computer would run smoothly.

Just a suggestion if you need software or anything give me a holler I can get it cheaper than you can on tigerdirect.com. One thing I love about heading up an IT department. Also you might try www.zipzoomfly.com or www.newegg.com much better sites than tiger, you don't have to deal with stupid rebates, also to get sp2 all you needed to do was go to microsofts website and download the IT Pro version, it doesn't check a lisence key, plus if you already have a legit sp1 key you don't need to change it for sp2. And if you need the cd let me know I'll burn it for you and send it off for free. Just a few helpful hints from you friendly forum Computer Pro.

DDR is easy to find... try looking for a stick of 32-bit PC1066 512 MB RAMBUS... almost impossible to find at a decent price, and I've been looking for damn near two years <_< zipzoomfly has had it listed as "On Backorder" for quite a while too...

well i haven't got around to reformatting my harddrive...got the lazy mexican syndrom and all :p anyways, i just wanted to know if it was possible to get windows 2000 on this old junker? i recently started building a computer and i feel like my computer would be better suited if it had windows 2000 on it instead...since my computer is a factory 700Mhz compaq presario, i don't have the drivers for the motherboard or anything really........so my real question is does windows 2000 come with generic drivers like xp does? if it doesn't i'm going to have to downgrade my computer to xp home  since i'll need the pro version (which this current computer has) on my new computer

IMO, may aswell stick with the current OS on that... I have friends and family members having a hard time with Windows 2k and ME.

It should have the generic drivers with it, however... you may still have to download the updates to 2K online.
