  6. They walk a thin line between good and evil. They're not in it for fame or recognition, just mostly for themselves. Nevertheless, they epitomize the word "badass" on screen. They are antiheroes, and this thread is dedicated to them. To start, here are 10 of the best antiheroes of all time. Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken (Escape from New York) "I don't give a fǚck about your war... or your President." Former U.S. Special Forces operative who is the youngest soldier to be decorated by the President during World War III. After his tour of duty, he robs the Federal Reserve Bank of Colorado and is arrested before being given a life sentence. Upon his arrival in New York, Snake is given one last chance at freedom by Bob Hauk when Air Force One crashes into Manhattan Island maximum security prison. Snake has 24 hours to rescue the President; failure to do so will result in a couple of capsules exploding in his carotid arteries, killing him instantly. Mel Gibson as Max Rockatansky (Mad Max series) "The chain in those handcuffs is high-tensile steel. It'd take you ten minutes to hack through it with this. Now, if you're lucky, you can hack through your ankle in five minutes. Go!" An officer of Australia's Main Force Police (MFP), until the biker gang Zed Runners burn his partner alive and kill his wife and son. He loses his humanity after going on a one-man rampage and killing Toe-Cutter and his gang. Several years later, Max regains part of his humanity after helping a group of denizens flee with their supply of oil from Lord Humungus' gang. Clint Eastwood as The Man with No Name (The Dollars Trilogy) "Get three coffins ready. My mistake, four coffins." Although nicknamed "Joe", "Manco" and "Blondie" in The Dollars Trilogy, this lone cowboy is best known without a name. He travels into a town overrun by two rival gangs and stirs trouble between them, eventually wiping them out of the town. Later in his adventures, he goes on a treasure hunt to recover $200,000 in gold during the Civil War. Toshiro Mifune as Sanjuro Kuwabatake (Yojimbo) "I'm not dying yet. I have to kill quite a few men first." This nameless ronin was the core inspiration for The Man with No Name. Harrison Ford as Han Solo (The Star Wars saga) "Han Solo. I'm captain of the Millennium Falcon. Chewie here tells me you're lookin' for passage to the Alderaan system?" It's sad how kids these days no longer see Han Solo as an antihero due to George Lucas' edits on Episode IV: A New Hope. Al Pacino as Tony Montana (Scarface) "Say hello to my little friend!" A Cuban immigrant who starts out washing dishes then moves up in his career by killing drug lord Frank Lopez and taking over his business. Although considered a villain for his drug smuggling business, Tony knows when to say no to an ordered hit, as he prevents a car bombing when he notices the target is with his family. This leads to the downfall of Tony's empire, as Bolivian cartel lord Alejandro Sosa sends in assassins to Tony's mansion for a shootout. Jean Reno as Léon Montana (Léon) "No women. No kids. That's the rules." French assassin in New York who spends his free time exercising, drinking milk, watering his houseplant and watching Gene Kelly movies. He is friends with his neighbor Mathilda, but gets himself in a world of trouble when he shelters her after DEA agent Norman Stansfield and his goons massacre her family. Clint Eastwood as Harry Callahan (Dirty Harry series) "I know what you're thinking. 'Did he fire six shots or only five?' Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?" San Francisco Inspector who has no problems with breaking the law to enforce it in the streets. Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle (Taxi Driver) "You talkin' to me?" Former U.S. Marine who works as a New York cabbie to compensate for his chronic insomnia. One day, he falls in love with Betsy, a volunteer for Presidential Candidate Charles Palantine. He takes her out on a date, but she dumps him after he brings her to watch a porno film. In return, he plots to assassinate Palantine, but turns away at the last minute. Meanwhile, Travis meets 12-year-old prostitute Iris and tries to convince her to go back to her parents. After the failed assassination attempt, Travis storms into Iris' apartment and kills her pimp Sport and his thugs. Ryan Gosling as The Driver (Drive) "There's a hundred-thousand streets in this city. You don't need to know the route. You give me a time and a place, I give you a five minute window. Anything happens in that five minutes and I'm yours. No matter what. Anything happens a minute either side of that and you're on your own. Do you understand? Good. And you won't be able to reach me on this phone again." Automotive mechanic and stunt driver during the day, this nameless antihero is a hired criminal driver by trade. He befriends his neighbor Irene and her son Benicio, but learns that Irene's recently released husband Standard Gabriel owes protection money to Albanian gangster Cook. The Driver offers to help Standard do a job at a pawnshop, but the job goes sour when Standard is shot dead by the pawnshop owner and Cook's men hunt him down. After interrogating Cook, the Driver discovers that the heist was orchestrated by Jewish mobster Nino Paolozzi, who stole the money from an East Coast Mafia. Intent on keeping Irene and Benicio safe for good, the Driver hunts down Nino and Bernie Rose, with the money as leverage.
  7. Snoopy and company return to the big screen after over 35 years. Peanuts is produced by Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Fox, and is directed by Steve Martino (Horton Hears a Who!, Ice Age: Continental Drift). No word on who will voice the characters, but the film will use recordings of the late Bill Melendez (1916-2008) for Snoopy and Woodstock. Peanuts premieres on November 6, 2015 Official Site
  8. The Fantastic Four will undergo yet another reboot in 2015, after the 2005 film and its sequel failed to live up to expectations. Josh Trank (Chronicle) has been given the director's chair, while Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass) and Akiva Goldsman (Batman & Robin, Jonah Hex) are on-board as producers. Screenplay is by Michael Green (Green Lantern) and Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Dark Shadows). Filming crew has moved from Vancouver to Louisiana due to better tax incentives. Currently, no actors have been named to portray the Fantastic Four or Doctor Doom, though it was heavily rumored that Michael B. Jordan (Steve in Chronicle) was to be cast as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, Miles Teller (Sutter in The Spectacular Now) as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, and Allison Williams (Marnie in Girls) as Susan Storm/Invisible Girl. The reboot is scheduled for release on March 6, 2015, and is said to share continuity with the X-Men series after Days of Future Past.

  10. From Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane comes Ted, his first-ever motion picture, premiering on June 29. Ted stars Mark Wahlberg (like no one here knows who he is...), Mila Kunis (Meg in Family Guy, Mona Sax in Max Payne), Giovanni Ribisi (Parker in Avatar, Wade in Saving Private Ryan) and Jessica Barth (various voices in Family Guy), with Ted voiced by MacFarlane and narration done by Patrick Stewart (like anyone here doesn't know his name...). In the film, John Bennett's wish for his teddy bear to come to life comes true. Unfortunately, they've been living together for over 27 years, which severely affects John's relationship with his girlfriend Lori. In order for him to move on with his life, he tries to distance himself from Ted. Early reviews have been positive so far, with a 72% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. 11. The Death of "Superman Lives": What Happened? is a documentary written and directed by Jon Schnepp (Metalocalypse). It gives an in-depth look at Superman Lives, an aborted attempt at bringing Superman back to the big screen in the mid-1990s by producer Jon Peters (Batman, Superman Returns) and director Tim Burton (Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice), with Nicolas Cage (Ghost Rider, Castor Troy in Face/Off) in the title role. Right from the get-go, the project was rife with problems - majority of which were caused by Peters' outlandish depictions of Superman and Brainiac. And right when Nicolas Cage had just finished a few costume tests, Warner Bros. pulled the plug on the film. While Peters' idea of having Brainiac as a robotic spider never materialized, it was recycled in the 1999 bomb Wild Wild West. People involved in Superman Lives such as Kevin Smith (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) and Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers) have moved on to more successful projects. So for those who were utterly disappointed by Superman Returns and Man of Steel, it could've been worse. Here's Chris Stuckmann's review of the documentary: And here are pics of the costumes that Cage tested: Official Site EDIT: Schnepp, the goddamn troll...
  12. Everyone's favorite yellow helpers from the Despicable Me series are back. Minions features the voices of Sandra Bullock (like nobody here knows who she is...), Jon Hamm (J. B. Bernstein in Million Dollar Arm, High Roller in Sucker Punch), Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice, Birdman), Allison Janney (Peach in Finding Nemo, C. J. Cregg in The West Wing), and Steve Coogan (Octavius in Night at the Museum, Silas Ramsbottom in Despicable Me 2). The film is directed by series co-creator and Minion voice Pierre Coffin with Kyle Balda, and the screenplay is written by Bryan Lynch (Puss in Boots, Hop). Minions premieres on June 26, 2015 in the UK and July 10, 2015 in the U.S. Official Site
  13. Coming to theaters on November 25 is The Good Dinosaur, which may be Pixar's most difficult project. Originally slated for release in 2014, the film experienced production problems toward the third act to a point where the whole film had to be scrubbed and the entire voice cast had to be changed after original director Bob Peterson left the project. Peter Sohn (Partly Cloudy) stepped in to finish the film. And here's a first look at the final product. Official Site

  16. One of the funniest films of all-time turns 40 this year. Monty Python and the Holy Grail will be released in a limited edition "Holy Grail" Blu-ray boxed set on October 27.
  17. Jackie Chan reboots the Police Story series once again this Christmas. Police Story 2013 takes place in Mainland China instead of Hong Kong. And much like 2004's New Police Story, this film is darker and grittier than the original 1985 film. Jackie Chan even had his hair cut short to look like a Mainland Chinese officer. Police Story 2013 hits Chinese cinemas on Christmas Eve.
  18. Crimson Peak is an upcoming horror film by Guillermo Del Toro (Pacific Rim, Pan's Labyrinth), starring Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, Alice Through the Looking Glass), Tom Hiddleston (Loki in Thor and The Avengers), Jessica Chastain (Maya in Zero Dark Thirty, Murphy in Interstellar), and Charlie Hunnam (Raleigh in Pacific Rim, Patric in Children of Men). Uncharacteristically, Ron Perlman is not in this film, considering that he's been in nearly all of Del Toro's works. The film premieres on October 16, just in time for Halloween season. Crimson Peak @ IMDb
  19. Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt Jeremy Renner as William Brandt Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell Sean Harris Rebecca Ferguson Alec Baldwin as the Head of the CIA Simon McBurney Zhang Jingchu And that actually is Tom Cruise hanging on the side of an Airbus 400M
  20. Please forgive me if this has been posted before. How old were you when you first discovered Macross? It doesn't matter if it was Robotech or not, since it 'tech uses the same animation for the first third of their saga. I was about 14, just getting into anime, back when it was still rare and underground. I had heard of Robotech from when I was younger, from commericals and all, but it was never on here. So, I discovered that a video store here had anime for rent. I clearly remember renting Project A-KO, but saw both Robotech II the Sentinels and Macross II (this was the VHS days) on the shelf as well. I later rented Robotech II, but honestly didn't understand any bit of it. A few weeks later I rented Macross II vol 1, and I was amazed by the space combat and storyline. I then subequently rented the later volumes when the store got them in. An anime all about transforming jets? Yeah I was definitely pleased. I later rented Clash of the Bionoids from another rental store, by this time I knew it was Macross, but still didn't know how it was related to Robotech at all. A few years later I found out the "awful" truth about the differences between Robotech and Macross, By that time, I had all 4 vhs OVA episodes of Macross Plus (still my favorite macross story to date), had purchased the "Uncut" version of Clash of the Bionoids, aka "SDF Macross: Do You Remember Love?" as everyone else in the world knows it as. Then Robotech came on Toonami (RIP) , and I was able to enjoy it knowing it as an alternate universe to a greater storyline. Years later I was finally able to watch the original Macross series the way it was originally intended to, and enjoy it that much more So, what's your Macross story?
  21. The Walk is an upcoming 3D biographical film directed by Robert Zemeckis (Used Cars, Beowulf) about French high-wire artist Philippe Petit's walk across the World Trade Center's twin towers in 1974. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Arthur in Inception, Johnny in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For) stars as Petit. The film opens on October 2. The Walk @ IMDb
  22. Another classic Grimm tale gets the modern Hollywood treatment. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is directed by Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) and stars Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye in The Avengers, Aaron Cross in The Bourne Legacy) and Gemma Arterton (Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace, Princess Tamina in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) as the brother-sister duo who become witch-hunting bounty hunters after a traumatic experience in a gingerbread house fifteen years prior. The film also stars Famke Janssen (Xenia Onatopp in GoldenEye, Jean Grey in X-Men 1-3) as the evil sorceress Muriel and Peter Stormare (Wolfgang in the Volkswagen GTI commercials, Meltdown in Transformers: Animated) as Sheriff Berringer. Other witches include stuntwomen Monique Ganderton (Alia in Smallville) and Zoë Bell (herself in Death Proof). So yeah, if you liked Van Helsing, then this is right up your alley. It hits theaters in 3D and IMAX on January 25, 2013. Official Site
