  1. I don't suppose anyone here saw a low budget Nicktoons TV show called Alien Dawn back in 2013?  It's a live action series with a lot of animated sequences in the form of a comic book that the show revolves around. The first episode opens with an experimental space ship being launched and there's a couple familiar faces in the crowd observing the launch.

  2. My wishlist for a new Macross, in no particular order:

    • Characters I will absolutely fall in love with by the end of the series.
    • Unique looking variable fighters that will be instantly recognizable.
    • Either a unique and interesting art style, or just bring back Mikimoto because that man can do no wrong.
    • Some new ship designs to fall in love with that aren't trying too hard to just be the old designs warmed over.
    • Music that will remain in my playlist for the next 30+ years.
    • I'm not holding my breath for 2D mecha animation, but I'd certainly love to see it.

Delta didn't do it for me. The characters, music, mecha, the art style, the ships...none of it really clicked with me. So I'm hoping this new show will give me something to get excited about. I'm not one of those "SDF or bust" types. I love Macross 7 and Frontier. Plus is a classic, and I enjoyed Zero. One thing I love about Macross is that it rarely just tries to repackage old ideas.

Launching a new Macross fansite for my translation work and lamenting the lack of any decent information for this ****ing movie.

It's downright depressing how little info there is for Absolute Live!!!!!!.  We're so hard up for data we have to get our info from a Master File book... assuming that doesn't get delayed again. >_<

This is one of the reasons I decided to poke my head in here again (Hi everyone, long time no see!) I really wasn't a big fan of Delta, but I heard Max appears in this and that was enough to make me want to check it out. But I can't seem to find it anywhere. Has it not come out on BluRay yet? I would have figured there'd be fansubs by now.

  4. This popped into my head the other day and I felt compelled to make it. Lots of people I know are talking about the strike, but not many of them are also Macross fans. So figured I'd drop in here and share. I just hope this is the right place to put it.

    You mean Caleb?

There was a comic about him during and after order 66. The Bad Batch episode retcons all of it. It proves a point I've been making ever since Disney threw out the EU and declared everything would be canon. Between the movies, the TV shows, the comics, the novels, etc there's just too many people involved, too many moving parts for it all to work as a single canon narrative. Things are going to get retconned, and the movies and TV shows are always going to take priority over the books and comics when it comes to canon because those reach the most people.

I'm not particularly bothered by the retcon itself, but as a comic artist I am always a bit miffed when comics are treated as throw-away material.

Well HG did release SDF to DVD... and I sincerely hope they think up of something for DYRL. DYRL is the biggest problem right now.

I still have and cherish my Animeigo DVD set, but I could see it being difficult now for someone to pick up SDFM if they went looking for it. HG's web store doesn't have it. I couldn't find it on Amazon. It's listed on Prime Video on Amazon but every episode says "video unavailable", so I'm not even sure SDFM is streaming anywhere.

It's my modest hope that as BigWest begins pushing the Macross franchise in the west it will prompt HG to rerelease SDFM to Blu-Ray and streaming.

On a somewhat related note, is anyone else disappointed that every video after Flashback 2012 on the Macross YouTube channel is region locked? I subscribed to the channel the day of the announcement and every time they upload a new video it's "not available in your region".

A possible solution to this is to replace the VF-1 with any other Variable Fighter. Just like what they tried doing with the PS1 game Macross VF-X2 release outside of Japan...  They will probably need to replace all the UN Spacy kite symbol on the Fighters too...

My impression is that HG's days of claiming ownership of every little Macross design are over and that all they have are a license to distribute and merchandise the original TV series (and merchandise but not distribution for DYRL).

I know after 20 years of HG being a trademark troll makes it hard to get our hopes up, but I think it's time to stop thinking in terms of HG claiming ownership of every individual element of SDFM and start thinking of HG being like any other anime licensee. The fact that Big West can distribute Flashback 2012, complete and uncut, demonstrates this.

Bigwest Begins Global Release of Animation “Macross” Series from April 9

Bigwest Co., Ltd. has announced the release of all works that are part of the “Macross” franchise made after 1987 to a worldwide audience from April 9, 2021. This not only includes the “Macross Delta” film currently in production, but all new material that follows it as well. This is not limited to anime titles, but also includes games, toys, live performances and other content and merchandising as well. The company has prepared an official YouTube channel as well as a Twitter account for its fans.

★“The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Flash Back 2012” Streaming for Limited Time★
    (※For outside of Japan only)

Bigwest has messages from members of the main creative staff behind “Macross,” Mr. Shoji Kawamori and Mr. Haruhiko Mikimoto, that the company would like to share with fans.

    Shoji Kawamori:
For creators like me, our work only comes to life for when it is viewed by people.
It seems that the time has just started to move, after years and years of stillness.
I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to all the people involved who have helped bring Macross to the world.
Last but not least, I am deeply thankful for all the support and understanding from the fans around the world.
Together, aiming for further freedom, and a brand new deculture.
TO THE WORLD, TO THE GALAXY, Listen to our MACROSS song!!!!!!

    Haruhiko Mikimoto:
Back when I was living in uncertainty, unsure whether or not I should become a professional creator or not, Studio Nue invited me to participate in their project and while I’m sure I caused some consternation for them, I was a member of the original creative team for the project that eventually was realized as Super Dimension Fortress Macross.
I was hesitant about making a career out of this field, but the Macross franchise was instrumental in compelling me hard to enter into this field of work that I do today, and for that it is a very special title to me.
On a personal level, I was frustrated not only over the fact that the global reach of the anime titles were impeded, but so too were all the production design sheets, the illustrations and the comics that were created through the involvement of many people.
I am very happy to hear that the situation has been sorted out enough that audiences around the world would be able to fully access all this material.
I humbly ask fans to please celebrate not only the anime titles that continue to evolve and change with each new series, but also support other material that is created to help promote the core titles, such as illustrations and comics, all of which are realized through the hard work on the part of myself and other creators!!

I mean, has a good film ever been made from an animated TV series?  Are Detective Pikachu or Transformers: Bumblebee the best examples we have?

I think a lot of character is lost in the translation from animated (or any drawn media) to live action. I thought "Bumblebee" was great, but it still didn't hold a candle to the 80's animated movie. "Mask of the Phantasm" is my favourite Batman movie, and none of the live action films even come close. Same goes for "Into the Spider-verse" and the live action Spider-man movies. I think the Marvel MCU films are all fine, but I'd be more excited if they put the same kind of money into animated Marvel movies.

    ETA:

That's not to say that live action has less character than animation, or animation is inherently a better medium, just that there's not a 1=1 translation between different forms of media. Take something that was live action and adapt it to animation and you both gain and lose character. Same with hand drawn animation to CG. Or CG to live action. It's going to be different and that inherently is going put it at a disadvantage with fans of the original material.

It definitely does not help if the people doing the adapting don't respect the source material or its medium and begin making changes in a bid to gain wider "mainstream appeal".

  10. I didn't really intend to start some kind of debate. The age thing wasn't a big deal for me as I still consider Frontier a great series.

I do miss hand drawn mecha, though. Dynamite 7 remains a favourite of mine partially because it's the last Macross with great hand drawn mecha action. And a great variety of mecha at that. (And no, this isn't intended to start any debate, either. The CG mecha in Zero, Frontier and such are fine, and I totally get the CG allows them to do more with a tighter budget, I just have a preference for hand drawn mecha.)

  11. Palpatine was in the first teaser trailer.

Personally, I didn't dislike the Bad Batch when they appeared in season 7. This seems like an opportunity to flesh them out beyond one note characters, and the idea of a bunch of clones going all A-Team post Clone Wars sounds like fun. Plus it has Filoni at the helm and I loved Clone Wars so I'll be checking it out.

I haven't seen Macross Delta yet, but from what I hear it's, well....pretty darn bad. And if that's true, maybe the question should be....*SHOULD* the next Macross be Kawamori's last? When was the last really good Macross in you guys' opinion? 7? Zero? Frontier?

I thought Delta was a bland rehash of Frontier. If it weren't reusing so many concepts from Frontier then I might have enjoyed it. Then again, I didn't care for the music either and that's a big part of Macross, so there's that. And the designs, aaside from the Elysion, were kinda bland.

In my mind, the last really good Macross was Frontier. I had some issues with it, like the main characters being mostly high school age, but I liked the characters, story, music, designs and animation.

As for the OP's question, no I don't think the next Macross will be the last. Will it be the last with Kawamori? Maybe, maybe not. If Kawamori enjoys what he does, he might never really retire until he's physically incapable of keeping up with the job.

  13. Hey guys. Long time, no see.

What I'm still uncertain about this are the specifics on licensing and distribution beyond the original TV series and DYRL.

Reading through the thread it sounds like HG is getting all merchandising and distribution rights to the original TV show and DYRL movie, but it kinda also sounds like they'll get a cut of newer shows like Frontier and Delta? Or will shows beyond the original get distributed independently of HG?

Or do we really not know for sure at this point and it's all just speculation?

In any case, I'm excited to see where this goes, especially with the Macross 40th anniversary on the horizon.

  14. Some food for thought when you're getting angry or frustrated by the delays. Comics generally pay crap compared to other work. Even in Japan which has a thriving comics industry. I really have to wonder how much Mikimoto gets paid working on "Macross the First"? Probably peanuts compared to his other job offers. That would certainly put the delays into perspective.

  15. If Hasbro created Jetfire's design, then why did they leave the UN Spacy logo on Jetfire's wing?

You're misreading again. I specifically said Hasbro owns the markings that they, themselves, designed. I even quoted myself and bolded that part for you.

You'll notice the SDCC "Jetfire" doesn't have the UN Spacy logo on its wing.

Of course, if the lawsuit is regarding the box art from the original G1 toy which was included, then that's a whole other issue.

  16. Sorry, I don't follow.

Hasbro owns the Jetfire markings they created.

Much of Jetfire's markings on the original toy and this G.I. Joe repaint were created by Hasbro for Jetfire. They bear little to no semblance to the original Macross markings.

Any mention of Bandai or Tatsunoko on the box would be due to the licensing of the original toy (Bandai owned the toy after Takatoku went belly up, and Tatsunoko had international merchandising rights to Macross, which they shared with Harmony Gold), not because Tatsunoko owned the Hasbro made markings. That would be like saying Big West owns the name "Robotech" because that's what HG slapped on Macross when they distributed it over here.

Even if Bandai came up with the alternate colour scheme and markings for Jetfire (highly unlikely) that would mean Bandai owned them, not Tatsunoko/HG. It's a huge stretch to suggest that Tatsunoko had any involvement whatsoever with the creation or ownership of the Jetfire markings as they would have had no involvement past approving the license to use the toy mold.

  17. You're looking at too many small things that don't matter.

All HG has to do to prove violation, is to show that it would confuse a consumer.

If you had both of the above on a store shelf, would it confuse the casual shopper.

    it's obviously yes.

IP law is not just small things, it also covers marketplace confusion buy artistic representation.

You seem confused. HG does not own either the Bandai toy mold or the Hasbro Jetfire markings.

HG would have to prove that it infringes on their license to sell Macross merchandise. In other words, does it look too similar to a design from the Macross TV series. Is it similar enough to the VF-1S from the tv series for the court to side with HG? Or different enough for Hasbro to be in the clear?

Posting pics of the old Hasbro Jetfire is misleading. Comparing the markings with those of the old Jetfire is meaningless as Hasbro owns the Jetfire markings they created.

Or to turn it around on you, is this:

Nearly an exact copy of this?

  18. That looks absolutely moronic. I'll be sticking to a conventional controller, thank you very much.

Who uses a controller for Team Fortress 2? Keyboard and mouse all the way!

Seriously, tho, I don't think something like this setup will replace traditional control options for games, but instead offer something entirely different. It's an interesting concept and I like that people are developing it. Will it be how I play all of my FPS games in the future? No, definitely not. When I want to sit on the couch and relax I'm not looking for a workout. But by that same token, when I want to get up and move, I don't want to sit on the couch with a controller in hand and I can't always get a bunch of people together and head out to a paintball arena.

Actually, one of the neat things I think of when I see this isn't traditional gaming at all, but just being able to explore an environment. Imagine if, rather than sitting on a regular treadmill, you had a device like this that let you wander through Skyrim or some similarly huge fantasy or sci-fi world. Not running and gunning, but just walking. That'd be pretty neat. Just taking a stroll from Whiterun to Windhelm, or up to High Hrothgar. Just as a part of your exercise routine.

  19. I'm so confused...yet oh so excited for whatever this may be...

Please be a VF-0D or YF-19 renewal (name still pending lol)

Personally I'm hoping for more mecha from the games and such.

    VA-3 Invader, VF-9 Cutlass, VF-14 Vampire, VF-3000 Crusader...

So many great VFs. Although I can't say I'd be unhappy to get a VF-0D or a VF-11 in the Ravens scheme.

I still need to get my hands on a VF-17, tho. Too many toys, not enough money.
