  1. Just watched it and I gave it a negative vote.

It just felt like a bunch of stereotypically anime cutesy antics. Like they wrote it directly from the big book of anime cutesy antics. Everyone is still just anime stereotype. It is all so cookie cutter. Maybe if you combine the traits of the 3 lead characters you'll end up with 1 solid character. The traditional animation isn't blending that well with the CGI. I think this episode was 4 minutes plot and 16 minutes of filler.

It's the price of anime originals. Without established/quality source material the writers tend to fall back on cookie cutter character templates. It's not bad for business either, fetishes for every demographic.

    Really like the VF-1EX dogfight.

    BUT...

A noob pilot who can't even fly the fighter & suddenly can pull maneuvers just because of a song, & than the whole squadron praise him because of that ? Feels cheesy.

My favorit moment is when Messer mess mith Hayate's victory dance.

The squadron need to push him hard, really hard.

Note : will they ever stop the W finger gesture ? I had enough of it.

Hayate is a gerwalk/battroid specialist with fancy moves though, it's just that he is an inexperienced (fighter) pilot. The song restored his confidence and allowed him the focus to use his strengths (switching to gerwalk/battroid in mid air). The moves were all his.

  2. I have no problem with accepting that it is fantasy but at least they should keep their fantasy consistent. If the Falcon needs to travel through hyper space to get to the next star system so would anything else with mass need to travel through hyperspace if they don't want to be slow. Thus the beams from the Starkiller Base would take years to get to a different system if they where not in close proximity.

This is just lazy writing. It wasn't that jarring while watching the movie but thinking about it now leaves me baffled.

It is still an enjoyable movie though. :)

The tech guy at the Resistance meeting called it a hyper lightspeed weapon so the beams do appear to travel through hyper space. That said, the whole super weapon subplot is a bit lame and detracts from the movie. I feel an inverted Hoth scenario with the First Order defending would have fit the scale of the movie better.

  3. Indeed, the only shows that break the cour format are long running daytime or primetime shows, not much mecha in that slot unless it's a Bandai or Takara Tomy toy property.

The tone of the new series will be related to the format and broadcasting time. Daytime (weekend morning) or early evening -> young kids and tweens (Macross 7, Gundam Age, Gundam Seed). Late night slot -> otaku audience aka teens and twenty somethings (Macross Frontier, Gundam 00).

Stuff like Unicorn, Macross Plus or Zero etc is pretty much reserved for OVA. Yamato 2199 did make it to TV, but that is a bit of an exception.

So the poison is either simple content or loads of otaku tropes ^_^.

  4. I just had an epiphany today concerning sports anime. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't 99% of it all essentially the same plot boiled down to this...

1.newbie with special ability beyond compare joins sport/team

    2.said sport/team is bad/disgraced/verge of disbanding

3.newbie becomes big baby jesus offering salvation

4.episodes of bonding with a practice event against another school

5.meet arrogant rival for first time, get whooped on.

    6.TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN!!!

7.bring in reluctant loner with skill rivaling newbie jesus

    8.enter tournament

9.told by authority team/school/sport will disband if you lose

    10.beat everyone until final match

11.face overpowered cheap rival of which the following will happen...

11a.team wins at last second on miracle bs play that wouldn't work in real life and big baby jesus newbie celebrates saving the school/sport/team and earns respect of cheap overpowered rivals.

11b.newbie jesus fails to win, everyone is depressed, somehow the powers that be decide to not disband the team/sport/school better luck next year, so you end up wondering why the hell you wasted all the time watching the damn show in the first place when nothing ends up mattering in the end.

Just watched girls und panzer and that's the plot to the letter. Not that I mind though, it's simple feel good fare and the predicability is just part of the charm..oh and it has tanks!

  5. Would be nice to have Mikimoto as the lead character designer again for a new Macross TV series, but it seems that Satelight is now the go-to Macross animationn house....so probably the "look" will be very similar to Macross F....but we'll have to wait and see I guess...

Risa Ebata was the character designer for both Frontier and AK0048, another more recent anime original by Satelight, so good chance she will do the character designs for the new Macross. Her style is not my cup of tea, so I'm hoping for someone else.

  6. Going to be seeing a dealer tomorrow and maybe drive away with an '09 VW GLI. Done my research on this car and haven't found many bad things about it. Checked the car out top to bottom and aside from a few dings to the hubcaps, it was clean. Still, is there anything I should know about GLI and GTI's from VW people here?

Had a Golf V GTI for a few years. Nice little car with solid handling, had some minor trouble with electronics.

  7. As for the rest, it's just the way it is. It's nice that some anime is officially available for free but, unless you're paying good money, you really have no right to complain.

It remains a difficult subject. Sometimes it doesn't pay to play by the book. Paid streaming services don't cover everything new, especially outside the States. I use a VPN tunnel to at least get the full range of crunchyroll, animax UK and netflix.

Still, inch by inch, we are getting closer to the point where we can legally watch all weekly shows:

  8. My reason for why Martha was a better companion then Amy or Donna. She had medical training and she was a looker. That puts her above Amy, who was useless except for being attractive, and Donna who wasn't even eye-candy and was irritatingly belligerent to boot. Really, at least Amy and The Doctor were tied to the fact they were both united a very early stages in each others lives. So there's that common bond, even if she was useless. Martha and Donna were just... there.

From a plot point of view I can understand the criticism on the character Donna as she doesn't offer much in terms of ability for adventures. However for me Catherine Tate is easily the best and most experienced actress to have been cast in the role of a companion. This offered the show a far wider range of options for comedy and drama scenes, which lead to some of the most enjoyable episodes in the modern era.

Piper and Agyeman in particular are very limited, offering little more than a pretty face. Imo Piper was saved by Eclestone, whose Doctor was the most alien, which contrasted nicely with girl next door Rose. Aygeman couldn't deal with Tennant's emotional exuberance which made Marta look flat and uninteresting.

  9. I feel that Coleman and Smith never had much chemistry so the Oswald character was a bit lacking when the Impossible girl mystery was solved. Hopefully Coleman and Capaldi will mesh better.

As for worst companions in the modern Who age, it's Martha Jones for me. No personality and so forgettable she could could be part of the silence.

  10. Now for another important topic: WHAT THE HELL IS IN NADEKO'S CLOSET!?

    My guess:

Her room is pink, a cute color which represents the fake Nadeko, the closet is yellow, so it has to be something that represents her true self and something Kaiki can use to help her. I'm thinking she is a closet otaku like Kirino in Oreimo. Would also explain why her parents wanted to keep it out of sight.

  11. Sorry man but it's just that damn good to me. Not sure why its grabbed me so much but I've got 11 more eps to go and it's got me by the balls. Not saying 0079, Zeta, etc are bad...far from it....but for me SEED is just on a whole 'nother level. Those characters, those intense battles, that animation quality, those beautiful colors popping at me in glorious 720p, those Gundam designs....SEED is just, *gasp*... ORGASMIC!!!!

Keep in mind I have to watch:

    G

    Wing

    00

    Unicorn

If you are that impressed with the animation of a 10 year old TV show, than I'm curious on what your reaction will be on Unicorn.

  12. So, Miyazaki retired O_O! Kinda upset by this, as I was looking forward to more awesome stuff from him, but I can totally understand, given his age.

End of an era really....I saw Spirited Away when I was only around the age of 8, and it captivated and awed me like nothing else.

I have high hopes for Kaze Tachinu where Miyazaki revisits his love for flying. Well deserved retirement, but shame to see Ghibli without him and I hope they can somehow deal with losing his amazing talent as a director.
