  1. I'm just happy that the outer space SciFi dry spell is over for a while. Granted we had a few here and there but this year we have SW7, Star Trek, Independance Day 2, and another Star Trek to look forward too.

Back to the theater on Saturday to see Star Wars again, first time I've watched a film at the theater twice since the original Star Wars.

Only TWICE...? I mean, I saw the original Star Wars TWELVE TIMES in the theater... Fourteen if you include the Special Edition!

Okay, yeah... Most of of those were before affordable home video, but STILL...

  2. I just watched Macross for the first time in it's original Japanese form. Hadn't watched the whole thing since I last watched the Robotech version on toonami...when was that...1997?

Anyway....I sure wish I'd been following your blog all along! That would have been great to read the commentary after each ep. Oh well...maybe next time.

The thing that really struck me was just how BIZARRE it all was. Was the show intended for Japanese children? I barely remember the Robotech version but they must have really had to chop it up to make it "appropriate" for American children. I can't imagine even an edited version being aired on American TV today.

What was the reception when it first aired in Japan? Did only geeks like it or was it popular with mainstream audiences?

That's a good question... I know it was pretty much the biggest thing until Zeta Gundam came out, two years later. But, yeah, two PM on Sundays was a pretty mainstream, family TV time, so I guess plenty of people were at least exposed to it...?

    Anyway, NEXT!

  3. I believe Palpatine's lines were the best scripted lines in that movie, and it's a credit to Ian McDiarmid for rising above the schmuck and delivering them with conviction (biting his tongue behind his teeth when he admits he's a Sith lord is another subtle move used to great effect).

But yeah, that dialogue is interesting when considered outside of the immediate scope of that scene - and is just as applicable to the Force Ghosts that appear later!

I've heard, as well, that the "opera speech" was the part that was rewritten by Tom Stoppard.
