So Richard Bilrer wants to build a galatic highway, yes? When does he say that it was "all for minmay"? I read that in another post and I've watched the series twice adn still can't find it. Also, in what series does it say Hikaru is lost in space?
-
As you say, Frontier rocked.
And clearly, based on how popular it's been, THAT'S what the fans want. And "Showori" is complying.

Yeah, I guess all replies have been fair. I guess a big part of it is from consuming formulaic american pop entertainment for most of my life!!! Macross definitely doesn't fit that mold. I'm pretty stoked Shoji is doing anything Macross related so no complaints here. Macross Ace could be some preliminary feelers to gauge interest in the original series and maybe spin something off?
-
With all this hype about Macross Ace and Macross Chronicle, has anyone heard of the Macross camp just flat out redoing a complete anime of the original Macross? or finally providing a sequel and end to Hikaru and Misa Hayase? I remember reading that the the original guy (Showori?) sorry, saying he didn't want to do sequels. I hope as this guy gets older he comes to his senses and a) gives the fans what they want and b) friggin cash in!!!. Anyways, thanks for reading my post. I still want an ending dammit!!!! Although I must say Macross Frontier ROCKED (I just got a Malaysian DVD version, not bad, not great quality but not bad)

#1: Macross The First One. Maybe not a clear winner. The animation was terrible in certain episodes, but as stated earlier in the post, the climax was in the middle of the series (the battle b/w Dolza and SDF1 with Minmay singing) with an adequate conclusion. I also liked that Hikaru, MAKES A DEFINITIVE CHOICE in the love triangle. He says, MinMay adios, hello Misa Hayase. The last episode is absolutely gut wrenching... at least to me. The story was compelling, and understandable. There were several subplots, from Max and Miriya, the 3 stooges, Breetai's fleet, Khron (sorry for mixing the names with Robotech, I apologize to the "purists". All in all I felt that the original series packed the most emotional response, and was better written, and more creative.
#2 Macross Frontier: Very close to the original Series. Provided TONS of new ideas from Ranka's frog phone, to the new flight suits. The love triangle storyline was pretty good, but I mean, hmmmmm should I choose Hot Girl Rockstar? or cute girl soon to be hot girl rockstar? I just don't know In the original Misa was the polar opposite of Minmay. It provided for more of a theme, to me. The production value was superior to all the other ones combined. All in all a great series. BUT no conclusion to the love triange. NO real conclusion at all??!?! The last episode is the climax!?!? WTF!?!?!?
#3 Macross Seven: Horrible. Bottom line, it was an episodic series, aka Voltron. They'd start to lose to the Protodevlin, (Voltron starts to lose to the "bad guy of the week) then they get some super powerful song to win (Voltron assembles from it's miscellaneous pieces, whips the sword out and slices said "bad guy" of the week in half. When MF references Seven, it's almost laughable that we're supposed to believe that the protodevlin is part of the macross universe. Absolutely NO resolution in the love triangle, and not even that much tension since Nekki Basara NEVER shows any interest in Mylene.
Only covering tV series here.

Yeah, kind of new with Frontier. What the F is "deculture"? Is it possible to get english subtitles with episode 18? I am guessing fansubbing is where fans translate for us. TY. I can't find it anywhere. Oh.... and why does Ranka's hair pop up like a puppy's? FRONTIER ROCKS
-
Interestingly enough, if you're streaming from anywhere west of that time zone, you're actually watching it as it takes place in the future

But even being a day ahead won't make the episodes come to us any sooner or the animators work any faster. Patience, cannon fodder.
Ahhh so. Sorry!!! I went on wikipedia, and it had an episode list, I incorrectly assumed it was a rolling episode list. I guess it's the entire 1st(?) season? Hopefully more than 23 episodes!!!

First of all, I read all the rules and guidelines and did not find that this would violate any rules. If it does, please delete this post. I also did a search for past topics and did not find an topic regarding this issue. So, I'll phrase this in the most "legal" way I can. Does anybody know where I can download episodes, or those things that can "find" episodes, for Frontier? I've found up to episode 18, but not 19 or newer. Any help? Again, I apologize if this is prohibited on this website. If you're a moderator please delete. But I'm all out!!! And I'm ADDICTED...

Animation! Does SDF:M beat M7 in terms of animation? Well, yes and no. There were certainly moments, and entire episodes, where the animation in SDF:M was great. However, there was at least an equal number of episodes where the animation was absolute garbage. Meanwhile, outside of an unaired episode and a theatrical short, M7 had no really great animation moments or episodes, but on the other hand it didn't have any dips in quality that are really comparable to those found in SDF:M.
It would be more accurate to say that while SDF:M had some great animation at times, it had some pretty awful animation at times too, whereas Macross 7 is much more consistent in its animation, never truly amazing, but never really scraping rock bottom like SDF:M was known to do.
I do wish that the reused footage in M7 was of a higher quality. I loved the Battle 7 transformation, but the fighter launching sequences and the reused battle footage was really disappointing and bland.
I can agree with that. Remember Max and Miria's first date/fight scene in the original ? HORRIBLE!!! But the war with the Zentraedi Battlefront was awesome. And M7 does kind of suck the entire way through. The reason I think SDFM out edges M7 is that M7 is 20 years newer? I guess animation technology really doesn'tn change? I really don't know. But MACROSS FRONTIER ROCKS!

The thing that annoyed me more than Basara is that the enemy is always attacking the fleet. Gets annoying real fast when they attack 10 times in a day.
I mean, it is a "cute" series. When I watch certain episodes there are countless commecials to buy Mylene's/Firebomber's albums. I think this series was really intended for a younger crowd. Maybe I'm wrong? I don't know. In the end, I really think there is a very "voltron" aka episodic feel to this series. They're perpetual enemy is gepelnitch and his monsters, and every time things start to get dangerous, here comes Basara [who is pretty much invincible] to save the day. Kind of like Voltron: they fight monsters, then they form the voltron, then they start to lose and then Voltron does his pose, with the sword then Voltron wins. Or like Hulk Hogan's wrestling matches in the 80's he starts out fast, then starts to lose, then comes back to win.
The original Macross was head and shoulders superior to Seven, and I would have to say it probably edges Seven out in ANIMATION. That's just pathetic. Zero and Plus really aren't long enough to get a full length "saga" type story in.
Anyways, sorry to be so negative!!! I just started watching Frontier. OMG it ROCKS!!!!! THAT'S a macross series for you. Seven was child's play. I think the Macross creators caught some flack for Seven and have REALLY made up for it with Frontier. Well after the first episode that is

Woah now, I think the original poster has gotten a little confused about what he was originally trying to say.
I agree with everyone else here that Mecha, Music and Love Triangles are what make any Macross title go round. They arent rehashes, they are the cornerstones of the series.
The way I read the original post however is that the original poster seems to be frustrated by the lack of over-reaching continuity.
I far prefer Macross to Robotech, although I grew up with Robotech, but I can see where the frustration is coming from.
By butchering several series, Robotech had the luxury of making this huge saga where the tales of the original characters were continued far beyond the original source material.
Macross, on the other hand, has never been like that. Each new iteration has been more or less self-contained but refers to a backdrop that is seldom expanded on. Its true that throughout 7 and now Frontier, the writers have put in this vague plot device of a colonization fleet. But why is this necessary? How long does it need to continue? Does the viewer ever SEE any new worlds or people being left on them? No, not really (although in Frontier there is a partly surveyed planet involved in the story, until.....).
I can see how, being a fan of Macross over Robotech, but having grown up with the later, one could be rather....disgruntled by the lack of tangible continuity and purpose when it comes to story.
Frontier is SUCH a good reboot for the franchise though. Its doing really well here so I hope a second season, OVA or theatrical release gets made at some point!
Actually...no, I'm not confused at all about what I originally said. I think most of the responses here started with sheer denial that Macross just rehashes the same themes, aka Love Triangles, Singing as the centerpieces. As the post evolves, all of a sudden, that's ok now!!! Now the posters say, well Bzdup, that's what makes Macross Macross. Wow. Here's the bottom line: Love triangles do NOT and are NOT necessary for a great Macross series. Macross Zero does not have a serious love triangle. Mao's relationship with Shin is completely a joke, she knows Shin loves Sara the entire time, and it is certainly NOT central, and Macross Zero actually rocks [i just saw it again]. Not to mention, singing is NOT central to the Macross Zero series. Sara sings a little bit, but it's mostly about the Birdman etc and the fight for the Birdman.
So I really take it that I brought up a topic that people don't want to see because they are in complete denial of it. Look, Macross 7 and Macross Plus are forumulaic approaches to selling videos. I don't see a whole lot of thought, or effort in either story line, well...enough effort to sell some toys using the Macross names. My frustration, and I apologize for not responding to each post separately, but it's just not worth it, is with the fact that they keep turning up formulaic, non-plot based, "new" ideas that would be completely outshined by simply continuing the original series. But ah...Tochiro. You are correct about one thing: I do want a continuation series. Or at least, a new one that's not a cheesy formulaic remake and stamp it as a "new" series.
-
formulaic? Ran out of ideas? um... if they did, they would just have used the same characters all over again, which they had every legal right to do. which is basically what robotech tried to do with its sentinels. you're confusing macross for your robotech.
who says the macross 7, plus or anything other than that was meant to be a sequel to SDFM? I, for one, have much respect for a franchise who did not decide to rest on its laurels and just use the same characters over and over again in the same setting until the audience got tired of them. props to the franchise for trying out new threats, storylines and characters with each installment.
and what, pray tell, is the unanswered question left at the end of SDFM? I mean, what more closure do you need?

don't get me wrong. i love my Triangler as much as the next guy, but i wouldn't judge other independent macross series on the basis of whether or not it continued the luvy-duv story of Hikaru Misa and Minmei.
New characters. Yes. New settings yes. Same old formulas? Yes. Want to do something truly different? How about writing a series that doesn't revolve around a love triangle? Look, Macross Plus is terribly forced with their love triangle, and in Macross 7 it doesn't even make sense. It's just not very subtle, elegant, or even believable! In my opinion. What answers are left unanswered in the original series? What about WHAT HAPPENS ON THEIR MISSION TO COLONIZE SPACE? for one...

I can't speak for anyone else, but I can't watch Robotech anymore...I start wincing at the dialogue and the voice acting and the music and I have to turn it off...even if it's just a youtube clip. Shadow Chronicles, I watched on youtube, and didn't like. In the interest of restraint, I'll just leave it at that.
And then there's Harmony Gold's more recent cutthroat business pratcies, but that's been rehashed elsewhere.
But that's not the real problem...my impression (and please correct me if I'm wrong) is that the real problem is that M7 didn't answer the questions you wanted answered, and perhaps the creators of Robotech could turn it into something you like more. A while back, there were a number of people here wanting a Macross Zero movie for exactly the same reason...they wanted it to "fix the ending." Needless to say, that didn't happen. And, I suspect, if there HAD been a Zero movie, the ending would have remained more or less the same.
If you're disappointed in M7, that's understandable. If you want more about Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay, that's also understandable. But I think you'll have to go into the realm of fan-fiction to scratch those particular itches. Kawamori could always change his mind, I suppose, but I'm not holding my breath, and I don't think anyone else should, either.
Yes. And that may be a cultural thing.... the whole leaving questions unanswered. I jsut don't know. In american screen writing, almost 100% of the time, the questions are answered, [or like the Sopranos, purposely avoided!!!} Again, I posted this in another post, I really feel that the Macross folks just ran out of ideas and keep trying to recreate the Macross magic with a forumlaic approach, like love triangles, unanswered questions, etc... Seven doesn't answer any of the questions it presents. The original series, doesn't really answer the questions you want either!!!

Besides M7 wasn't about the original trio.
We did get original characters like Max, Millia and Exsedol.
Max, Millia and Mylene forming the family triangle.
Two male and one female triangle like Basara, Gamlin and Mylene wasn't much about romance but whether the two guys can make a bond of friendship. Much like Isamu and Guld.
That also happened with Basara, Sivil and Gigil.
What I don't like AT ALL about the love triangles you mentioned, is that in my opinion, they are unnatural and almost forced as a lackluster attempt to capture the magic of the original Macross series. I think most people who watched and loved the original Macross series would say that more or less, the central and most powerful story is the love triangle between Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay. The battle between the Zentraedi and the UN Spacy folks is the perfect backdrop to that love triangle. The bittersweet ending with Hikaru leaving Minmay for Misa and his duty is really touching, with the tear drop at the end with the picture book and memories closing. I'm guessing that was Minmay? It's all very bittersweet and touching. Most importantly, that story has an authentic and believable feel to it. It seems more natural and human.
Whereas in Macross Plus, the love triangle seems to be contrived, and completely forced to attempt what happened naturally in the original series. In Macross 7, I honestly don't even think the writers knew what they were doing and just happened to make a bunch of love triangles.

Wait a year or two, and then watch it again; you might like it more.
At least, that's what happened to me.
And Hikaru was in it, kind of...at least, Bobby (the guy who was going to play Hikaru in the "Lynn Minmay Story" was played by the same voice actor who played Hikaru.
And I would never, ever, ever want to see what "the Robotech people" would do with Macross 7. The very idea gives me hives.
But the Robothech people have done something without the macross characters, aka, Southern Cross, and the Invid series, and now more recently the Shadow Chronicles, which isn't terrible, at least I don't think so. I mean, for me, I do thing there could have been a very interesting story in both the macross ending, aka the Megaroad and space colonization thing, as well as the Robotech Series, finding the Robotech Masters. Both Robotech and Macross have begun/completed continuation stories with Shadow Chronicles, and Macross 7/Frontier respectively. But both skipped a generation. I dunno. Still want to know what happens to the original Macross Characters. From my experience with Japanese culture, I don't seeing them bending to the audience's desires as much as an American series would.
I'm rewatching Macross Zero now. And I think I may end up liking it more than Plus and Seven. I mean Roy Fokker RULES.

Yes, I too have the similar disappointments, aka, unresolved issues like Mylene's love story, lack of any realism, no Hikaru!!!. But the most intriguing idea in Macross 7 was that Nekki Basara was Hikaru and Minmay's LOVECHILD!!! It would explain [finally] his piloting skills as well as his singing prowess. The plot in M7 was just SO slow that the series really turns into an episodic type story. I really wish the Macross people would wake up and finish the story the right way. Or at least let the Robotech people have a shot at it. Let's face it: had they done "the Sentinels" [for robotech] or did a real continuation with Hikaru/Misa/Minmay people would have laughed at Macross 7. But due to my yearning to have an end to the story, I found Macross 7 acceptable.
Embarassing confession: the music actually grew on me!!! I'm still dying to see a Hikaru based continuation. Never going to happen though!!! Oh and one more thing about the Nekki Basara comment: isn't there a PICTURE with Hikaru and Nekki? He does look an awful lot like HIkaru, and he's a pacifist as well. So, great piloting skills, great singing prowess, pacificst, and looks like HIkaru. I thought it would be revealed in the story for sure. Also, it would explain why Max tolerates Nekki going into flight all the time during battle scenes, or at least, why they chose Nekki to be the pilot of the VF19.
In the end Macross 7 doesn't touch the original Macross' storyline, and most surprisingly the animation wasn't up to par with a 20+ year old animation. I mean, the end of the original Macross series is one of themost powerful stories, I've ever seen. Animation or not. It's too bad that the Macross people won't just go with what works and keep on trying to reconstruct a new version of it from new parts. AKA Macross Plus, Zero, and 7. IMO< none of htem are that good.
I dunno. I really liked the Robotech series. Then again I was like 12 when it ended!!! What other anime do you recommend? I never really got into anything else since I live in California and only what is available via cable tv.

So I just started watching Macross 7. It's kind of retarded. Anybody else feel this way? Wait.... now listen to me sing while I shoot you with speakers!?!??! WTF?!?!?!? I'm only on episode 5 and I love seeing that Max and Miriya are part of it. I was hoping that the Macross series would do some sort of series that continues on the Hikaru/Misa Hayase/Minmei storyline. Did they? I know robotech started the Sentinels, but then the Macross people stopped it.
So I'm hoping this series gets better. I'm a sucker for Macross/Robotech so I'll probably watch the whole thing irrespective of how good it is.
