  2. The general tips to follow when S-ranking are - Using melee whenever possible for bonus Grapple Points - Finishing the mission ASAP - Killing named "ace" pilots as soon as they appear for the 10000 bonus - Worry about combo points last. As you upgrade your mecha's weapons it will become more difficult to get a high number of consecutive hits before killing your targets. When you unlock the EX mission, just focus on survival at first (kill big Vajra FAST or prepare for gang rape), and don't be surprised if you end up failing the missions dozens of times A good way to take down the large Vajra is to lure one away from the rest (hopefully Alto is still alive to occupy them) and kill them one at a time. Probably one of the more annoying things about this EX mission is that Alto's VF-25F is a valid target so you'll end up locking on him far too often (this is the part in the story when Alto and Mikhail are fighting with each other). Killing Alto is not advised since he distracts the enemies, and furthermore if you damage him he'll actually start ramming you if nobody else is around... (I don't remember if it's like this in the normal version) You'll have to play much more aggressively to get an S-rank, since you get a B by default just for beating it.
  3. I checked, and you are right about the stats. You are half wrong about skill selection - lemme clear things up. The Final Final Word: EX missions force you to use an UNTUNED mecha and UNLEVELED pilot with stock stats, regardless of whatever improvements you may have accrued over the course of the normal campaign. Pilot skills are usable - however, you may only use skills that the pilot already has at that stock level. Since you mentioned Max World, I am unable to use it with Mikhail on EX Friendly Fire. However, Max can equip it in his EX missions because he starts with the skill. Either way, you don't need any extra skills to beat the EX missions if you're good enough. I probably mistook the basic Iron Wall (Defense x2) skill for Ace; it still helped me beat Brera the first time though.
  4. Nyan Nyan Service Medley (Tokumori). It's on the new OST3 that was released a few days ago. I liked it already, but the old one didn't have Iteza Gogo Kuji Don't Be Late.
  5. If changing pilot stats was your problem, you can't. Not on EX missions, nor on any other mission. Pilot stats increase as you use them more and complete missions - you cannot "tune" them like you can with the mecha. As for the mecha, in the menu, it looks like you can tune your fighter, but as I mentioned earlier, all of the tuning is reset during EX missions. Honestly, how could you be having trouble switching skills, though? You would just access it in the normal manner, by pressing Square when the pilot is selected. This is the first time I've heard of such a problem. I mean, even if you go on the GameFAQs forums you'll still find plenty of people thinking tuning works in EX missions, but almost everyone has to level up characters they rarely use to get the skills for EX missions. Not my video, but it proves that you can select pilot skills on EX missions. The mission is the one where Max has to kill stuff in the canyon. It is heavily compressed, make sure you watch it in HD. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4HAOkgusIs
  6. I'd rate Macross Frontier an 8.9 out of 10. When it comes to rating things, 1 is terrible, 5 is average, and 10 is excellent. Pros: Almost always incredibly satisfying, to say the least. Tributes abound to other previous Macross series. From the subtle (Miranda Merin in Miss Macross) to the hilarious (dying over pineapples? not this time!) to the plain awesome (Fire BOMBAAH!!!), Shoji Kawamori made sure that there were plenty of references to satisfy fans that have been sticking around since the original series. As soon as I finished MF it made me want to go back and watch the entire SDF Macross and DYRL? movie. So I did A superb soundtrack. I've always been just accepting of Yoko Kanno's work, but she really outdid herself this time, composing an epic score to MF as well as all of the new songs for Sheryl and Ranka. MF returns directly to the politics, love triangles, and fighter combat that we all loved in the original SDF Macross and DYRL. The complex web of subplots, made all the more interesting by new and unexplained characters and antagonists, was IMO executed well enough so that audiences had a good feel of what was going on by the end. IMO the Vajra in particular were a worthy addition to the Macross universe, as they provide a lot of interesting backstory and answers, while raising many new ones. From the first episode, you can already tell by the quality that Macross Frontier had a huge animation budget. Like Macross Zero, MF also uses CG to draw its mechanical models and scenes. I personally think that Studio Satelight did a really good job with this, even if the Valkyries do look a bit like toys. Kawamori did state, however, that he wanted to move away from more realistic, traditional fighter design and focus on just making them look cool rather than maintaining aerodynamics or passive stealth. IMHO he succeeded in this regard. New talent Megumi Nakajima did a great job being both the spoken and written voice of Ranka Lee, especially since this is her first role in both anime and music. Even if the character herself got a bit annoying at times, I think they really nailed it with choosing someone who could live up to Mari Iijima's legacy. MF brings in some very interesting new characters and backgrounds. Alto might be a typical hothead, but whoever heard of kabuki actors piloting fighter jets? Bobby Margot is both kickass and very frightening to straight men. Sheryl seems like a tsundere tough girl at first, but develops significantly over time, and her later confirmed ancestry makes it even more awesome. Cons: A few significant issues, but otherwise minor complaints Hit-and-miss visual quality. Though MF's budget is certainly considerable, it really seems like they threw all the money into animating the first and last episodes. The 2D animation gets really drab towards the end of the first half, where models and people are often distorted or missing details. By the time the final episodes rolled around the quality was better than ever, but I feel that this inconsistency could have been avoided. Length. Or rather, lack of it. Given the probable production costs, I can understand Studio Nue's desire to cap MF at 25 episodes. However, I felt that if there had more more episodes, or if the plot had been distributed more evenly among the slower paced early-middle episodes, a lot more could have been explained. Canaria's back story, along with Grace's co-conspirators, for example, were barely touched on in the series. Because of the limited length, events were rushed towards the last few episodes, and there is never time to show the aftermath of the war or fully resolve the love triangle as SDF Macross was able to do with another ten or so episodes. Uneven writing exacerbates the short plot. There are some episodes where almost nothing of note happens, and time in MF seems to move at a turtle's pace. Other times, evil political intrigue, action-packed dogfighting, and the loss of major characters completely immerses the audience in the universe and makes you never want to stop watching. Unfortunately, those slow episodes take up a good half of the series, so I wouldn't be surprised if some people felt turned off before the series had a chance to redeem itself. (And redeem itself it did.) 25 years have passed since the production of SDF Macross. Much of what was once considered "original" and "classic" is now considered "cliched" and "stereotypical" among all but the most hardcore of fanboys. That said, with the exception of a few characters and subplots, MF fails to innovate its genre in the way that its original predecessor did. Maybe I was expecting too much after rewatching all of the older series, but though it is spectacular in many areas, MF doesn't bring much to the table that we haven't seen before. Following up on the previous point, MF contains copious fanservice, a phenomenon that was most definitely not present in SDF Macross. I suppose it was unavoidable in this day and age, but I always felt that Macross was somewhat above this. It's not so bad that it detracts from the actual show, which can't be said for some other anime. What is up with that POS VF-171(EX)? So you're telling me that the standard N.U.N.S. fighter nearly two decades after the YF-19 was chosen is inferior to the VF-17 special forces fighter, which in turn was inferior to the VF-19 that was to be adopted as the main variable fighter of the fleet? Even after its makeshift upgrades, the VF-171EX isn't even a close match for the VF-25 or a determined Vajra, much less a terrible horde of V-9 Ghosts. What happened to the SDF-2 Megaroad fleet? This is one of those questions that will never be answered, but after rewatching DYRL and Flashback 2012, I want to know more than ever. They even had the nerve to bait us with the SDF-3 Global (before we knew the name, of course) and Birla's fold quartz ring! ARRGGGH. --- Overall, Macross Frontier has its share of problems here and there, but then again, so did SDF Macross. SDF Macross and its movie spinoff are still classics, but Macross Frontier is a worthy successor to the universe in my book. I'm looking forward to the movie, and I can't wait to see what they do for the 50th anniversary. In conclusion, I leave you with this lovely picture...
  7. Don't forget these! Releasing on Christmas Eve. For those who don't remember, Bobby Margot is the Macross Quarter's homosexual helmsman who is in love with Ozma Lee. Sheryl Nome & Bobby Margot - Sheryl no Uchuu Kyoudai Fune Tracks: 1. シェリルの宇宙兄弟船 - Sheryl no Uchuu Kyoudai Fune (Sheryl's "Spaceship of Brothers") 2. ボビーのニンジン等。 - Bobby no Ninjin Tou. (Bobby's "Carrots and More") *shiver* 3. シェリルの宇宙兄弟船 (カラオケ) 4. ボビーのニンジン等。 (カラオケ) The first track is a May'n cover of the oldies-style "Uchuu Kyoudai Fune" that you heard the Zentradi singing at Formo Mall. The second track is probably "Ninjin Loves You Yeah", albeit flaming. Third and fourth songs are karaoke tracks. Ranka Lee & Bobby Margot - Ranka to Bobby no SMS Shoutai no Uta 1. ランカとボビーのSMS小隊の歌 - Ranka to Bobby no SMS Shoutai no Uta (Ranka and Bobby's "SMS Platoon Song") 2. ボビーの私の彼はパイロット~妄想の彼もパイロット - Bobby no Watashi no Kare wa Pilot ~Mousou no Kare mo Pilot~ (Bobby's "My Boyfriend is a Pilot" ~My Imaginary Boyfriend is a Pilot Too~) 3. ランカとボビーのSMS小隊の歌 (カラオケ) 4. ボビーの私の彼はパイロット~妄想の彼もパイロット (カラオケ) The first track is Nakajima Megumi and Miyake Kenta's cover of the SMS theme song. I don't have to explain track #2. Third and fourth songs are karaoke tracks. Btw, has a release date been announced for the Macross Frontier movie yet?
  8. I've never seen any Macross-class fold while in attack mode, although I don't see how that would stop it from doing so. Both Battle 7 and City 7 would most likely each have their own fold generators in the event that one would have to jump without the other, but Macross Frontier showed that fold drives are capable of jumping other vessels in the vicinity as well, such as when the Frontier initiated a long-distance fold after linking up with its colony pods. Hmm.
  9. So much misinformation! Since many people here probably can't read Japanese, I'll include the characters so you can recognize them in the menus. The Final Word: Tuned stats for mecha do NOT carry over to EX missions. EX missions force you to use a pre-selected UNTUNED mecha, and the pilot of that mecha. The pilot, however, will have any stats and skills that you have leveled or unlocked during normal missions. As with all missions, tune points are awarded upon completion depending on your performance. I know this because I grinded with Mikhail for a while when I couldn't beat Friendly Fire EX (aka Sad Sniper), and eventually I unlocked previously unavailable skills that definitely helped me beat the mission, and Mikhail's low Constitution (体力) stat was marginally higher than before, which may or may not have helped. I first tried Missile Drop (ミサイル落とし), which defeats incoming missiles. However, the time it takes to recharge and the fact that it only destroys one wave of missiles didn't help much against the Vajra hordes. Later, I unlocked the Ace (エース) skill, which temporarily raises attack power, speed, and boost meter by 50%. I managed to actually dogfight the VF-27 to death thanks to this skill, since I could never get a complete hit with the VF-25G's special attack. As for box missions: It took me FOREVER to figure out how to S-rank these deceptively simple missions, because I thought you had to walk up to a box and attack it to pick it up. Turns out, you can save a lot of time by switching to GERWALK mode and flying straight along the ground - when you touch the box while locked on, you will automatically pick it up. If enemies appear, you will be unable to lock on the box until they are gone, so either eliminate them immediately or make sure you get every box beforehand if it happens to be the last wave of bad guys. Rinse and repeat, and whatever you do don't run on foot. As for the rest, make sure you kill Kamjin or any other named enemy pilot in time to get the Ace Kill bonus, preferably using a special melee skill for the few extra grapple points.
  10. Oh, there's actually a thread on this game! I got Ace Frontier as soon as it came out. Haven't played it for a few weeks now, but I've S-ranked every single mission and unlocked every pilot, mech, and skill. (Max World FTW!) If you can read Japanese, there's a wiki that tells you how to unlock everything: Mecha: http://www1.atwiki.jp/macrossaf/pages/12.html Characters: http://www1.atwiki.jp/macrossaf/pages/15.html And before anyone asks, no, you CANNOT use the Ghost X-9 (it is mentioned on the page as "unusable") Back on topic: If you have fully tuned your PPB, it's always worth it to pop it before going into a fight. Once it's fully tuned reload time and shield strength will be strong enough to get you through most any mission unharmed. However, eventually you will unlock machines that are so fast and powerful that you won't need a PPB. For me, the best machines are Roy's VF-1S(S) and the VF-27. It is much easier to unlock the first machine though, so that got me through the game until I got the 27. Btw, tuning is completely nullified in EX missions, so you have to rely on your pilot's stats and unlockable skills, hence the unfortunate grinding that I had to go through with Mikhail in order to beat the Frontier EX mission "Friendly Fire." (I think the English title was Sad Sniper)
  11. I DID IT! After weeks of blood and sweat only made worse by school, I've finally managed to unlock every. Single. Mech. The Valkyries are actually mildly useful in multiplayer now that I have the FAST packs.
