"Moonraker" is one of my favourite Bond movies. And yes, I know that its got issues. I don't care. Farewell, Mr. Drax. -

Could they at least have tried to make it look less like every generic “Going to be taken over by a rogue A.I. and try to shoot down the hero about halfway through the movie” drone ever...? -

This perhaps shouldn't have come as much of a surprise, on reflection. I remember reading an article on vidoegame A.I. in a magazine a while ago, and various developers were quoted as saying that one their challenges when designing a game is that they have to dial the A.I. down quite a bit, otherwise it tends to make mincemeat of human players. -

Its impressive, certainly, but I'd like to see it try that in combat condition without ripping at least some of the stores it needs to fight back with right off the pylons. -
Veteran anime fans (sounds so much nicer than "old", doesn't it? ) may recall the parody "10 Little Gall Force/Scramble Wars" shorts. In "Scramble Wars", the finishing point of the featured race is a place called Bangor - which also happens to the name of the real town that was the home of Anime Projects, who distributed AnimEigo releases in the UK. I never have been able to find out if that was a coincidence or intentional!

I know a common comment about female super-characters costumes is that they look like they were "painted on", but thats the first time I've seen it depicted literally!

The heat sink is an interesting idea. Curious as to how it will dump the heat though. -

Well, if you think my slip-up was bad I told some of my work colleagues the other day about the F-15 pass and yesterday they messaged me excitedly to say that a pair of "F-111s" had just gone over...! I told them they need to work on their aircraft recognition... As it happens, I didn't see the aircraft in question but we just happened to be in a place where we heard the alleged Ghost of the Aardvarks fly over... -

Yes, sorry, typo I managed to make twice! I guess we're even now for when someone here called the British Army "The Royal Army" a while back... -

Where I live in the UK, back during the Cold War, it wasn't unusual to see military aircraft passing overhead most days - some RAF, some USAAF. But I haven't seen USAAF aircraft for quite some time, until today when what I think were two F-15Es screamed past at fairly low level. (I didn't have a great viewpoint, but they appeared to have twin tails and seemed to be painted dark green). Took me right back to the time when all we had to worry about was the risk of imminent nuclear annihilation... -

We'll be fine, we just need a maverick pilot to save us with the power of ex-girlfriends and thumping J-pop. -

I think we've all seen this anime: https://www.engadget.com/the-air-force-will-pit-an-autonomous-fighter-drone-against-a-pilot-121526011.html -
I seem to recall reading in an interview that the anime designers knew the planes were aerodynamically... er... interesting but went with "Rule of Cool".

"Six of the Best" Dave probably won't mean anything to the young pilots these days... (its a rather archaic reference to caning, a now thankfully outlawed punishment for wayward school pupils). -

Thanks for the answer about the AMRAAMs. Over here we could call it "Super Dave"... on that note, I wonder if this means a six Meteor fit would be possible? -

F-ZeroOne replied to David Hingtgen's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I've lived in the UK all my life and I've never heard "Dave" used to refer to Americans; possibly it happens somewhere but given all the other... er... affectionate terms we have for our neighbours across the pond I think I'd have heard of it by now. I suppose its possible Australian exchange pilots with the RAF used the term and it got adopted that way. One other explanation that escaped me is that David Cameron was Prime Minister when the F-35s were ordered. Regards the F-35 upgrade news - sorry, whats "Sidekick/6"? Is that the name for fitting more AMRAAMs in? -

In US service... I can't confirm this, but apparently in UK service the F-35 is known as "Dave". There could be a number of origins for this (theres a UK TV channel that plays largely classic UK TV shows of that name) but the most likely one is probably also the same source for the TV channel name, the incredibly popular UK sitcom from a little while back called "Only Fools and Horses": (The joke being the character being referred to is actually named "Rodney". And yes, that is the creator of the revamped Cybermen from the 10th Doctors run...!). -

The "Viper" name was very likely inspired by the "Colonial Viper" space fighters from the original "Battlestar Galactica" T.V. series. The F-16 at the time would have seemed suitably futuristic. Edit: Wikipedia also seems to think there is a resemblance with the snake as well.
