  1. Can I egg you on with a comparison picture? :) Seriously, that's not bad fan art, but it doesn't look quite right. Check out this schematic and tell me what you think:

SDF-1 Macross official line art schematic

That fan picture is an interesting wallpaper, but it's kinda "off".

Doesn't bother me, it's not my picture. I just found it on Google Image search. Someone last page posted a link to where it comes from but I was just looking up pics of the Macross when I found it. Thought it looked good so I posted it.

Yes both are missing the "arms."

  2. Alto vs Brera, round 2 start.

Alto already scored 1 in the first round now back with his VF-25, and looks like he got some help from his backseat co-pilot. I wish Alto didn't pull Isamu by ejecting her away during the dogfight. While Brera as predicted, is using the mysterious VF-27 with a new leg which Alto had blown up in Round 1.

The stakes are on for round 2, who will win, Alto or Brera?

Alto didn't have a copilot in round 1, he was alone... and certainly didn't eject anyone. Are you making predictions on the dogfight in ep.13 because your present and past tense is making it hard to tell.

  3. I've been thinking about getting this thing recently although I can't afford it now and I'm saving for a VF-25 later but my then hopefully I'll have more money anyway. I haven't had time to read this entire thread so I'm just curious does everything think this thing is worth the price? Is it even easy to get anymore I hear not a lot of places sell it anymore? I'd really like to own the Macross in some form and this thing looks really nice despite being small so I want to know if it is really worth it. Also if it is still available anywhere can people point me to a good site that sells it? I can't afford it now but if I do end up getting it I should know where to do so.

  4. the fishy part is that the blocks conveniently had the gears and mechanisms to be movable at all, as if the redesign had the foresight to build in some modularity. one would think that battleships would be designed to be rock solid, with nearly all the major parts bolted down, permanently.

Then it is obvious! I have figured it out!

    Plot device.

  5. exactly! ;) i also heard the dialogue in that episode, and i know what it implied. but my first thought was "yeah right. no one knew that the ship was capable of transforming into a robot.... suuuure."

it's like the engineer was messing around with global's head that time, and he was supressing his laughter the whole time. and after global left, he told his co-engineers, "what a sucker! he actually believed that crap! as if we could transform an entire frickin ship just by chance???" And that point, the entire engineering crew fell to the floor laughing their asses out. :D

I can easily imagine that happening. Global is gullible.

  6. Agreed, the fact that the VF-25 was more than a match for it in episode 9 makes me think that the erratic movemetns that it can do are more for dodging large volumes of anti-aircraft fire than dogfighting.

Which we also saw in action during ep.7. It was doing crazy quick turns but there was a Vajra hedgehog ship firing at everything that moved and it avoided everything unlike Alto who lost a wing before getting into the ship (where he proceeded to lose everything else).

  7. Actually, if it is hydrogen their burning, it's stored in liquid form in a pressurized, refrigerated tank similar to whatthose hydrogen pwoered cars you can lease from BMW, Mazda and soon Honda.

Hydrogen can be liquid or gas but it heats to plasma faster as gas. Don't forget those cars don't work the same way as nuclear engines. It isn't like we are heating hydrogen to plasma to power those cars. Hydrogen fuel cell cars are powered by a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, which produces water and electricity which the latter is use to power an electric traction motor. Although it is possible to use hydrogen in a car like gasoline, that is to burn it. However the common idea for hydrogen cars is to go with the fuel cell concept because it is clean and the aforementioned water is your only exhaust, plus your fuel efficiency (at least in Honda's new FCX Clarity) is equivalent to a gas powered car getting 78 mpg which is very high and unusual for a gas car. Good stuff.

  8. It's fridge logic. If the original design wasn't meant to transform, retrofitting the thing to be able to transform is a huge undertaking. It seems even more far-fetched than usual to think that they went "Hmm, we really need to connect these two points because the fold engines disappeared on us. I know! We'll try transforming the ship!". Surely it would've been easier to lay out long cables (considering they could rebuild a city so quickly) unless it was intentionally rebuilt to transform.

That was brought up in the show if you watch the first episode where it transforms. Global said they didn't have any spare conduit to connect the two pieces to transfer power to the gun. The only option the engineer had for him was to move the blocks together so the could be connected, and the only way to do this was to reorganize the block structure of the ship. I also always got that vibe that the fact it looked like a humanoid was mere coincidence and they didn't intend that. However I can see how that sounds fishy.

  9. Actually, after giving it some thought, I realized that it would require extra plumbing and equipment to not only suck, but compress the gas (as I figure valks probably store their propellant in pressurized tanks) would add further complications and cost to an already complicated and expensive piece of equipment.

Yeah that is probably a good point, pressurized gives you more propellant to burn (or in this case heat).

  10. And since there are (I believe) six Pin Point Barriers on the Frontier, it's double the decibels in 2059!

Though I would imagine the classic trackball system has been replace with a touchscreen allow them to point and click where to put the barrier now.

  11. I doubt it is any heavier than the VF-25. However I have wondered if it loses life because of the big engines in the middle of the wings. In the 27's case it is making up for lack of vertical stabilizers with the 3D thrust vectoring. I think the 27 does have canards (4 of them it seems) though so that shouldn't be a problem.

However we do have to remember the VF-27 seems more designed for anti-ship and search and destroy missions rather than air/space superiority like the VF-25 so it may not fare as well as it seems (unless Brera and his mental interface can compensate).

  12. Huh. The humans gave the ASS-1 transforming tech? I thought they got transformation technology from OT which was derived from ASS-1.

You're right about the ARMD though, so that's a wash then...

The transforming ability of the Macross was sort of an accident really. It came about because the Macross was built on a modular block system which may or may not have been the same on the ASS-1, but it doesn't seem so when you look at the original Supervision Army design. So it is probably how it was refitted that gave it that modular system. The only reason the SDF-1 transformed was to fill a gap in it's system keeping the main gun from firing due to a missing fold drive that vanished after that infamous botched jump. I don't think that humanity ever planned the SDF-1 to be a transforming battleship, however they must have liked the idea as they purposefully designed the New Macross class with a Storm Attacker mode for battle purposes, and even further with the Macross Quarter.

  13. Why can't it just be some other Supervision Army Gunship? It's not the ASS-1 was unique.

Because Supervision Army Gunships didn't transform or have ARMD carriers attached to them. The whole transforming and attaching other ships was something the SDF-1 did after it was refitted from the ASS-1.

  14. indeed. the new renders are much more natural.

another bit, that suggests the backgrounds were recycled: in M0 the lighting was from the left and both the valks and clouds reflected this. in MF the lighting was on the right side and correctly depicted by the left shadowing on the valks, but the clouds still had their shadows on the right facing the sun

    No one's perfect. ^_^

  15. Inches, miles and farenhieght are measured in the Imperial system. I think there is one other country in the world that still usess it besides the United States. I think it's a small third world country.

They never did come up with a Metric equivilent of lattitude and longitude. The current system is base 60.

I've never heard it called the Imperial system, sounds like something the British would say, and they should use inches and stuff still I would think unless they took the time to convert unlike lazy America (I really do prefer metric).

  16. I would preorder Ozma's but I don't have the funds at the moment. However I know BBTS is a good store to get it from. I still also want to knot if Ozma will get regular Fast packs as that is what I want the most. I'll decide if I want an armor pack later, but if Ozma only gets armor and not super then I'll go with Alto.

  17. So...lets say that a VF fly into a nebula, is that mean that it in a gas-rich environment? Wouldn't that mean it's similar to flying in the atmosphere?

    I'm just guessing here.

Not really as the turbines for sucking in air still wouldn't work because while there is gas in a nebula it is still gas in a vacuum. It would have to be densely packed with the pressure of an atmosphere to be able to be collected by the VF's engines. There is a chance it could catch some gas but I wouldn't bet on it. Now if it had another way of collecting the gas like a ram scoop or something then they could at least refuel their internal reserves. Basically they fly into the gas and the ram scoop tries to collect what it can magnetically. However the main problem with this is a ram scoop is intended for hydrogen by Bussard's theory (hence the name Bussard Ram Scoop) and if the nebula is something else it might be harder to heat up for plasma than hydrogen. Anything can be heated to plasma but not everything can be done as easily as hydrogen. The Nitrogen/Oxygen combination in our atmosphere doesn't take much more energy to heat than hydrogen so that is why that works so well but if you try collecting something that takes longer to heat you basically lose fuel efficiency. Other problems with ram scoops include the fact that it's size would need to be near 600 km in diameters and the buildup of particles might slow it down. So it is highly unlikely you'd put this mechanism on a Valkyrie.

Plausible, depends maybe on how gas-rich the nebula is.

Another thing I've been wondering about, can VFs top up their internal propellant reserves while they're in an atmosphere?

Like I mentioned before what they most likely use for their internal propellant is probably hydrogen as it is easiest to heat to plasma (hence why NASA is thinking hydrogen for its nuclear rockets). While the air of our atmosphere works as well, I don't know if mixing it with the hydrogen reserves is useful at all. However if the VF's don't even use hydrogen and just stuff their tanks with air (that is mostly Nitrogen and Oxygen) then I don't see why they can't just take what they suck in and forward it to their tanks instead of propelling it. It would make for easy refilling. However I still think pure hydrogen is probably used when in space as it is easiest and hydrogen is the most abundant element in the Universe, it is very unlikely to ever be in short supply.

  18. Standard would be 21.65 centimetres. ^_^

Standard measurement is the name for what America uses instead of Metric I thought, maybe I'm wrong and it is called something else. Well you should be able to tell what I mean, in metric it is 21.65 centimeters and in the American measurement system it is 8.52 inches. While I'm American I actually prefer Metric as it makes more sense to me. However I gave both as I know not everyone may know how big that is.
