  1. Excellent podcast for 24.

Mike's awesomeness seems to be directly proportional to the amount of screen/ action time/ intensity of Makina....

Don't worry Mike, I'm sure they'll pull through! I don't agree that the shot should have come from the front.... since you cited "padding"... lol. They still need her Hope and Dreams to anchor the fanboys!

  2. Negative

Very poor screenplay. The scenes, speech and actions of characters, mostly from Chaos side made little sense.

There are many things wrong, but one of the things that stood out for me was the plotline involving Mikumo falling into enemy hands.

I think as regular watchers/fans who have been analysing what would be the next logical step in therms of the storyline, it was logical that Roid would need a replacement singer and it was clear that Mikumo was it, and that means that sooner or later, she was going to be in enemy hands.

in this episode it happened. Now, I'm sure there are many ways one can fall into enemy hands, and i have to say that this is one of the lamest ways to do it:

Basically what happend on screen basically GIFTED her to the Windermereans, specifically Roid, JUST LIKE THAT. No fuss, no sense of danger, too convenient.

Furthermore, though Chaos would not have known the depth of her abilities, they really should have known better: ANYONE capable of interacting with the Protoculture ruins - which is clear in-universe how powerful they can be - should be deemed a priority target for protection against falling into enemy hands, which they know use a person who can...guess what? Interact with the ruins!

The abduction would have worked much much better, if Chaos had spent much effort to protect Mikumo, only to be outsmarted by their enemy.

What happened was basically very lazy writing.

if this show did not have "Macross" in its title, I would have totally written it off and refused to watch anymore episodes, and something tells me I'm not alone in this.

  3. I really wonder if the speaker podcast crew think it is worth their time and effort in discussing the last 3-4 episodes.

I have the greatest respect for you guys and i really love to listen to you guys banter.

I mean, as a normal viewer, it left a pretty sour taste just watching it. Having to watch it and spend at least an hour discussing what are probably lame episodes, then editing it before posting it? I can't imagine what a chore it could be for you (unless you really enjoyed the episodes).

  4. Just saw the Chinese subs. Very disappointed with this and the last few episodes. I used to be looking forward to what the next episode had to offer and hit the forums to see what kind of insight there are from others and perhaps join in the discussion. At this point, I seriously don't care about this series anymore. There isn't anything really new to discuss besides lamenting about how the producers are squandering the series (I think it is pretty much unanimous). What a shame too, since we only get a new Macross series/ OVA maybe once for every 2 Olympics summer games.

Perhaps the last few episodes will be different. Maybe, but I remember ourselves saying that a few episodes ago too, so, like I said, i don't really care at this point. Even through the rose tinted glasses as a Macross fan, this series had effectively jumped the shark since episode 13.

  5. Neutral vote, bordering on negative. If I were a new comer to the series, the last 3-4 episodes would have put me off the series altogether. I'm only still in this because I am a a Macross fan. I'm in it for the Valkyries, I'm in it for VF combat, i'm in it for good songs, and a good story.

So far, after episode 13, we haven't have had much of these: The VFs were barely there, they were mostly sitting in their hangers, the songs don't really do it for me, and although there might be a good story, the pacing absolutely kills it.

The episode sees too much moping around, and by the time something exciting actually happens, sorry, time's up. Grrr!

I'm not even going to put spoiler tags because there is nothing much to spoil: 1/2 the people are moping around because of last episodes reveal, and pretty much the other 1/2 of the people are trying to reach Mikumo in the Hospital ship late in the episode.

That is all the episode is all about.

Plain boring and Chaos as a PMC is a poorly run entity where members have little sense of work ethics and professionalism. IE. they do things when they feel like it and have basically little discipline when it comes to their emotions.

  6. Looking forward to it. Most war movies so far have been pretty much from the view of the United States (not that it is bad, just that there was more than just American troops being the Allied Army). Finally we have something from the POV of the British/ Commonwealth troops and by a director who has 1/2 his roots on British soil.

Hopefully it will be educational and entertaining.

  7. This episode made me root for Mirage more!

This episode seems purely to shoehorn the romance aspect, not sure if it was meant to make us root for Frejya, but it sure had the opposite effect on me.

The fact that Frejya didn't shy away when Hayate was almost touching her rune.... well, seeing as it seems analogous to a erogenous zone, seemed to imply that she was willing to let Hayate have his way there and then!

  8. I like to think of Ernest Johnson as someone like Kambei Shimada from <7 Samurai>, rather than an totally incompetent commander.

I quote this excerpt from this blog :

We learn Shimada..... has a long history of fighting on the losing side. “You’re overestimating me,” he says. “Listen, I’m not a man with any special skill, but I’ve had plenty of experience in battles; losing battles, all of them. In short, that’s all I am.” But we know he is much more.

Sounds like it can describe Ernest Johnson too.

  9. I would apreciate some enlightenment as to where (as in series, novels, etc) one can see civilian market Valkyries. I seem to have missed this part.

(Basara's does not count, it was military surplus by way of connections).

    Macross 7:

The episode where civillian VF-1s (and de-militarised Destroids) make appearances

    Macross Dynamite 7:

    VF-1 Whale Hunting Valks

Possibly VA-3s used by the whale poachers

  10. The team is showing their work on the music. While this still does not get to the sheer awesomeness of Fukuyama or Kanno, they are not just making up for it with quantity as I thought before, but also with a well thought out line of development. All five singers have lead songs after ep 10, and then in ep 11 we get an attempt at blending their voices - done acapella and with clear demonstration, in animation, who joins at what time.

Agree the music is coming together, from the past 2-3 episodes. At the very least, the music is now able to flow with and amplify the action and emotions..... or in Delta's terms, "resonate" with the audience, echoing the "resonance" in the protoculture ruins.

    Wait a minute......

Is Kawamori trolling us by suggesting we, the audience (likely in our mid 30s and up) are like relics?!

  11. Info dump (1st 1/2) and feels (2nd 1/2) episode. Now we understand why the ruins on the other planets are important and why Windemere wants to control them, based on what CHAOs has figured out. Of course, Windemere might have much bigger plans for the ruins.

Hah.... looks like Alpha and Beta guys aren't close to the Delta guys at all. At the "sendoff", though probably only a Delta squadron event, but we've got the entire bridge crew, Walkure, the mechanics, Rag Nyan Nyan personnel, but not even any representative from either squadron. Not to mention Hayate wasn't keen to entertain the notion of replacement pilots from either squadron. I get it, each are close knitted units, but they are still sister squadrons for heaven's sake!

Love how the animators pulled off a visual gag with the model plane having a sun graphic, which is strangely reminiscent of that fateful kill shot.

Hayate has some big shoes to fill with those words of his. I was like "yeah... right... get your own act right 1st"

Love the way Kaname steeled herself and awakened her resolve. She was previously resigned to just play 2nd fiddle to Mikumo and even Freya, but seems that she is now determined to be just a bright as either of them and not settle for the status quo.

  12. Her and Max both, but honestly, if you think about it, it even makes sense that she would send Messer out knowing his condition...

Johnson: "Lady M, are you sure, you want to assign Messer to Delta platoon? He'll be in high stress situation, and he is a known carrier of VAR."

M: "Of course I am, Mirage is in serious need of training, she has the basics of piloting down, but none of the instincts, Messer is ideal for training people."

Johnson: "How do we teach her instinct?'

M: "Simple, just tell Messer to be his cold hearted self, beat her up continuously on training mission, and keep criticizing her at every point."

Johnson: "but what if she doesn't improve, this isn't exactly the normal way, we might even break her."

M: "Ernie, you're a Zentradi, right? That method is the normal way for Zentradi, and we had it much tougher, we just got thrown out battle, and if we got killed, well, back then, the battle field is the only training ground we had. And a little constructive criticism better not break her, she has my genes, I damn well didn't break the first time Max shot me down, and he was using live ammo. With Messer, all she'll get is harsh language and a bunch of paint pellets."

M: "As for Messer, just keep an eye on him, and send me the data on his condition as needed. We can always pull him if we have to, I can send one of my other son in laws out there to replace him.... hmmm, where is that Gamlin."

    Sounds plausible actually.

On a separate note, it has been noted by many that there has been a lack of non-plane mode combat. Flying is Messer's and Aerial knights' (specifically Keith's) forte. This we know. But how would they perform in Battroid mode, even Keith? Til date, the only combat scenes we have seen in battroid mode come from Hayate and Arad (as far as key characters are concerned of course).

Trying to fight the Aerial Knights in the air(especially without Messer) gives Delta / Chaos/ NUNS a distinct disadvantage, they've got to take away that advantage either by, as many have said, the remainder of Delta Squadron better step up their game, or try to force the Knights to fight on the ground or at least out of their preferred mode. Maybe the 2nd tranche of episodes will see CHAOs trying to shift their strategy somewhat

  13. It just occured to me, Acard launched and we have yet to see him really do much in the last dogfight... it was pretty much all Messer until now. I'm going to have to rewatch the episode but, I'm pretty sure everyone took a hit and Messer did all the fighting. Squad Leader should be better than Messer no?

Nope all the time. Max was Hikaru's subordinate, but he was The Ace.

  14. Though we commiserate the apparent loss of the Grim Reaper, perhaps from a warrior's point of view, it was a worthy death. Dying facing the most worthy opponent, dying while having his beloved singing to him, for him, while also fighting for the beloved.

It was as worthy a death (apparent,at least, and as far as anime is concerned anyway) as it can be.

  15. What an episode! This is definitely the best episode thus far as far as "resonance'' with viewers are concerned. I must say it is pretty cartharthicto be able to discuss this episode here with like minded people.

As mentioned in the podcast (definitely recommend it), this will be the defining moment of the episode, nobody will be paying too much attention to the rest of the episode, though some things have already been mentioned by individuals here and in the podcast:

    1. Is there some 3rd party pulling strings behind the curtains? What are their goals?

    2. Delta squadron, having lost their Ace pilot, will be severely disadvantaged in the upcoming battles. This episode has really shown that even Arad can't hold a candle to the White Knight in terms of skill.

    3. There are possibly undiscovered protoculture ruins on other planets

    4. What did Freya and Mikumo see in their vision?

  16. This should probably be part of episode 8, but I was just thinking:

The planet Voldor, and perhaps their liberators (I'm assuming they were liberated) NUNS should have a captured, albeit damaged/ legless Drakken, courtesy of Bogue.

Bogue didn't seem to have destroyed the aircraft after walking out from it. If this is true, we'll have the in-world assessment of the capabilities of the Drakken soon.

  17. But I actually like Walkure Attack better than Ikenai borderline. The song, with that drumline seems a much better fit for space battles. Also, IMO it does a much better job of balancing each of the girls voices (whereas Ikenai Borderline seems to be mostly Junna).

Maybe it'll grow on me after I listen to it a few more times, but right now it isn't doing very much for me. It took me a while before Ikenai borderline grew on me.

In contrast, most of Kanno's songs(musical tunes at the very least)for frontier were "insta-buys"

  18. The new song, Walkure Attack is really growing on me. One of their best, if not their best one, IMO.

If this one is the better ones they've got, then I would have to say that that Delta's music is seriously lack lustre. Except for Ikenai borderline, non of the songs's tunes have made it enough an impression that I am able to recall the tune.

    Kanno is seriously missed here.
