  1. YDL has been a PPC Linux distro aimed at running on old Macintosh hardware long before the PS3 (first release in 1999). Terrasoft, the makers of YDL, officially support the PS3 and YDL may be more optimized for the PS3's hardware than other Linux distros, but YDL for PS3 is still basically a port of YDL 5.

YDL is, I guess, the easiest version of Linux to install on the PS3, because since it is officially supported, there's plenty of directions for how to install it. It's been a long time since I did it myself, but IIRC you need to back up your PS3, then tell the PS3 to format itself to make room for another OS. Unfortunately, you're only options are 10 for the Other OS and the rest for the PS3, or 10 for the PS3 and the rest for the Other OS, but that shouldn't be a big deal if all you really want to do is browse the net. In fact, YDL will install Firefox by default when you install it. Oh, yeah, you'll also need a bootloader. You put it on a USB memory stick or what not, and it lets the PS3 boot the Other OS before it's installed (once YDL is installed, you won't need it anymore).

In fact, the trickiest thing I remember about installing Linux is that, by default, once YDL is installed, it will become the default OS, and YDL doesn't make it clear how to boot back into the XMB. What I did was use the tools in YDL to write a little program that basically put a button on the panel (that's YDL's version of the Mac OS dock), complete with PS logo, that when click runs a Terminal script to reboot the PS3 in the XMB. I'd be happy to post directions for what I did if anyone wants them, but I should point out that I did it maybe a year ago. I know after I downloaded the YDL distro and installed it, it used one script, but after I updated YDL, it used a different script, so I had to change it. I'm not sure if the actual distro is updated now, or after you install it and update it if it's current with mine or not, so mileage may vary.

Oh, and for the record, yes, Ubuntu can run on the PS3, as long as you get the PPC version and not the Intel version. You'll also need a bootloader. I have no idea how to do it, but I'm sure it should be similar and there are probably directions on an Ubuntu forum or something. I know a friend of mine installed Kubuntu on his. (Kubuntu is Ubuntu with the KDE desktop instead of the GNOME desktop. It seems less popular, but I found it to be much more user-friendly, especially if you're not familiar with Linux.)

One final thing to note... unless you leave YDL/Ubuntu/whatever Linux distro you choose as your default OS, booting into it will involve starting the PS3, navigating to the Other OS menu in the PS3's settings, then directing it to start the Other OS, at which point the PS3 will reboot, then boot Linux. Booting Linux takes as long, if not longer, than booting Windows. You might find it easier to just use the ol' computer (or, if you've got the money to burn, an iPod touch).

As far as Sony updating their web browser, there's no reason why they couldn't via a firmware update, but whether they will or not is another story. I haven't heard anything about it. I'll let you in on a little secret (one that's sure to get me branded as a Nintendo/Microsoft/Apple fanboy, which seems to happen whenever I express the slightest displeasure with Sony, but I digress)... Sony's web browser sucks. Big time. I sucked on the PSP, and it's no better on the PS3. I'd say use Opera on the Wii if you have it, as it's slightly better, but certainly not enough to warrant paying for it. In fact, the only browser I've ever used that wasn't a computer's that I actually liked is Safari mobile in the iPhone/iPod touch. Safari mobile is almost worth the cost of the hardware by itself, but it works by not making the same crappy compromises that the Sony browser, or Opera Wii, or IE for Windows Mobile make.

Why is it that anytime somewhat starts trying to explain Linux, I get a massive headache. I'm glad some of you guys have a good mind for it...cause I surely don't.:blink::blink:

  2. Gundam noob question.

Do I have to watch the whole 0079 series or do the 3 movies make pretty good cliffnotes?

    ( I REALLY hate dubs )

If you don't like the designs simply watch the movies and you'll be ok. The original series can come off as quite dated now and we wouldn't want that to deter you from watching some of the newer better series. 0079 has a great plot and by watching the movies you'll miss out on some of the lesser seen mobile suits and even some aces but if you just want the general idea the movies are fine. You could always fill in the gaps with the episode synopses found on the web.

Once you get to Zeta Gundam in the timeline you'll know if you really like universal century gundam or not. If you do like it, then you'll try getting all the games, models, and other junk the rest of us are obsessed with. If you don't like it then you try some of the other universes like CE or AC.

Now time to go back to my new Remote control haro from gundam. B))

  3. Ive started watching Seed now, and while Im enjoying it, Im not finding it as good as 00. The designs on the GUndams arent hooking me as much, the charatcers, while good, arent as compelling and overall its just a weaker one.

The suits get better later in the series. I recently read that Bandai now considers the Freedom the most popular gundam ever in regards to sales revenue. Its right up there in my top 3 gundam designs as well.

  4. Are we going to see Gundam OPERESHONTOROI in other words GUNDAM OPERATION: TROY on the PS3 or will we be abandoned like Ace Combat 6?

The Japanese release date is June 26, 2008 for X-box.

    I don't see a PS listed at http://www.operation-troy.com/

    It does look good.

I think that is an xbox 360 exclusive. Looks pretty cool though. Imagine being a ground troop trying to take out a GM or Gundam.

I just wish they would make that Gundam Simulator you find in arcades in Japan a PS3 release. Its basically like warhawk with global rankings and such. If I had that, I'd probably never leave my house let alone by any more games.

  5. Im not so much into super-realistic or anything. i like my anime to take itself seriously, but also ghave some fun. I love full metal panic for example.

Honestly for me the avoidance was never the plots. as a kid in Australia, Gundm was a name i knew peripherally. I knew it was a big Japanese show but not much more. i was only a kid when the anime revolution of the late 80s/early 90s hit, and so wa slimited to only getting what was released here on Video (Yes.....VIDEO!). And even then, Australia is in PAL format, not NTSC, and so I couldnt import anything to watch from overseas. Not every anime translated in America came here, and not every anime was translated to English anyway. I have dim memories of knowing that Gundam was a bunch of crazy model kits with robots. i rmeember that the early ones were always a bit blocky for me, and therefore never appealed. So i stopped looking to closely.

By the time i saw my first Gundam series i was already into anime. And even then; I am primarily a toy collector, so any other hobby comes peripherally. i have quite a bit of anime, but i know true anime FANS who have a lot more. Anyway, Gundam Wing aired on Cartoon network, and i figured now was the time to see what all the gundam fuss was about.

    And i hated it.

the designs of the gundams i found vaguly dizzying and over the top. there were weapons and gear i just didnt like. Deathscythe? Why arm your robot with an impractical weapon like a Scythe? i just didnt get that. And even if I could have gotten past the designs ("Why does th Gundam have feathered wings?" I d ask...) the story itself was.... well it was a little boring frankly. i didnt give a crap about any of them. i gave it a good 3 weeks or so to grab me, and nothing. So i stopped watching, and that was it, no gundam for me!

00 hooked me because it was exciting and interesting. i liked the idea of the paramilitary force, coz im a sucker for secret organisations and the like, no matter how little sense they make (Come on, the goverments of Earth just HAD to know where Tracy Island was....), and i love the kind of graceful martical arts fighting of the Exia. The characters were interesting, the setting was fun, the animation was awesome....and for the first time the designs seemd clean and simple to me. i LOVE Exia as a robot design. i also like kyrios and dynames, though not as into Virtue.

Anyway, as to model kits i have decided i like enough to get, or try too:

http://www.toy-wave.com/eng/detail.php?id=8953&table=207 - That one is awesome

http://www.toy-wave.com/eng/detail.php?id=7643&table=207 - That one im still deciding. Im not sure bout the colour

http://www.toy-wave.com/eng/detail.php?id=6530&table=207 - That one, though i dont think i have the painting ability to do the small Gundams.

http://www.toy-wave.com/eng/detail.php?id=4370&table=207 - Ditto, and it has ships Id need to paint too....

http://www.toy-wave.com/eng/detail.php?id=5558&table=207 - Kinda like that one...

http://www.toy-wave.com/eng/detail.php?id=...9&table=05a - That one intrigues me, but Id like to see clearer pictures.

http://www.toy-wave.com/eng/detail.php?id=...8&table=05a - Again, interesting, but need cleaer pics.

http://www.toy-wave.com/eng/detail.php?id=8880&table=05a - Really like that one.

http://www.toy-wave.com/eng/detail.php?id=8548&table=05a - And that one. i have no idea what this or the 2 before are from....

    http://www.toy-wave.com/eng/detail.php?id=6696&table=05a - Thats ok...

http://www.toy-wave.com/eng/detail.php?id=6403&table=05a - Thats pretty cool. im not sure why it says it has crew in its feet, but ok....

http://www.toy-wave.com/eng/detail.php?id=1028&table=05a - Im really torn on this one. i think i need better pics....

    http://www.toy-wave.com/eng/detail.php?id=235&table=05a - Thats ok....

http://www.toy-wave.com/eng/detail.php?id=233&table=05a - I didnt realise that Gundam competed in the street Fighter contest, but ok. This one is funny anyway :)

http://www.toy-wave.com/eng/detail.php?id=197&table=05a - this guy reminds me of a swat trooper i dont want to get it, i just liked the colours...

Im still hunting round looking at stuff, but toywave is one site that i have found easy to navigate and has pics. So there u go.

    Long winded aint I?

    In order of your selections:

    1. The Strike Noir...I bought on its release day in Akihabara last year...wasn't really poplular but I find the design very cool. Watch Gundam seed stargazer to see it in action. Unique strike gundam design. I haven't built mine yet. I'm a bit backlogged.

    2. 1/100 justice...very cool but won't be as detailed as the MG kits. ALso its pinker than it is shown in the anime.

    3. The EX ship kits are awsome but you have to glue and paint them. If you have the skills go for it. These are also pretty big.

    4. Same goes for the EX eternal.

    5. Same as #2 in regards to quality. They are the same scale as the MG kits though which is nice for both this and the Justice since I don't think there are MG kits of them.

    6. Supposedly the Unicorn gundam is incredible. CHeck the gundam thread since some of the members reviewed it there. Many moving parts.

    7. I was thinking about getting Lucas MG strike myself...looks very cool.

    8. MG hi V gundam ....a good kit. Lots of detail.

    9. I've heard that this F91 mass pro kit (MG) isn't the best for quality.

    10. Zeta gundam v2.0 MG is A true work of Art. Don't pass on it.

    11. MG MK-II Aeug is a good kit.

    12. MG EX-S gundam is tryly awsome. Very large, expensive and awsome. Now they just need to make an MG deep striker pack for it.

    13. C1 Zeta MG kit. I would do some checking to make sure this is based on the v2.0 zeta or else the transformation will stink like the v1.0 zeta. This might be a prototype pic since I think this kit usually comes in orange colors.

    14. G Gundam MG kit. I've heard this is only of average quality. Plus G Gundam is considered one of the worst gundam series. Its like gundam wrestling and kung fu with horrible characters.

    15. The MG EZ-8 kit from 8th ms team. I have this kit and it is and fun build. Don't try panel lining it with a gundam pen. It over does it...use a pencil instead. The EZ-8 is a modified gundam and has a lot of extra hatches and stuff the normal ground type gundam doesn't. A good kit...I think I paid about $40 for mine.

You might want to look these up on HLJ.com or some of the gundam sites for more pics. There are also a lot of pics in the macrossworld gundam figures thread.

Keep in mind the general rule of quality and parts. (listed below from highest to lowest for parts count and quality.

    PG 1/60 scale

    MG 1/100 scale

1/100 seed series (scaled up HG kits)

    HG 1/144

EX kits are different since they are compled and require glue and paint.

HCM pro are mostly a completed kit in 1/200 scale that have a quality above the HG kits but just below the MG kits.

    Good luck..

  6. For cheep fun pick up the Eureka Seven Games for the old PS2. Dissenters let the stones fly... if anything get the second game...the battles have more surfing.

Yes, wrong system... but the Eureka Seven Game for the PSP has a level where you push the buttons in the correct order to massage Ms. Talho's legs  ... how is that for Playstation oddity.

There is also a level where you scrub floors before time runs out.

I found the Eureka seven games for PS2 to be ok at best but if they are cheap what the hey. I played the PSP version while flying to japan. There are some pretty odd things you have to do. I totally forgot about the talho leg message part.:lol:

  7. There would seem to be one natural choice for the soundtrack, and its about bloody time someone took notice of Yoko Kanno in Hollywood. :)

If they don't use Yoko Kanno for nearly all the music I will boycott this theme. She is by far the best music composer for this film. Anybody else would pale by comparison.

Also I really hope they can get the dubbed or original japanses actors to do the Tachicomas'.

This story needs to stay in Japan and not be set in America or Europe. America and Europe are the evil empires in the GITS world.

  8. Finally played some Warhawk again. new 1.3 added the wrench and healing. Forgot how much I missed it. Where are the members at? Anyone want to join, send a message to PSN: Uxi and I'll send a clan Invite.

I can't wait till the new game pack comes out. I've played way too much warhawk over the last 2 months. I have to watch it with only 3 weeks left in the semester now. Too many papers to write and about a foot tall pile of papers to grade. A friend of mine is so addicted to the game its rediculous...he's played 115 hours since getting the game in late feb.

  9. The Giren's Greed series is a strategy game, basically Romance of the Three Kingdoms but for Gundam.

If you can understand Japanese, they're probably the best Gundam game out there. Tons of fan service and alternate reality possibilities that fans would love. Hell, even if you can't understand Japanese they're still pretty solid strategy games.

I think it's funny you use "length" as a basis of judgement on the Vs. series of games, since they're designed to be multiplayer games first and foremost.

Actually length might not be the best word. I thought they were short and way too easy. Plus if you played federation vs zeon fully Titans vs Aeug seemed like a rehash of the same poor graphics...new mobile suits but the overall gameplay was forgettable. I like most of the seed games even though they too were short but at least were fast paced and the suits didn't handle like a brick in space. I too am really liking the battle series for PSP since its fast paced fun. Half the reason I get the new systems is for the Gundam games...I also liked DWG but its totally mindless fun not a lot of strategy needed.

  10. I've actually played it, and you sir, are crazy. The vs. games are some of the best Gundam games to date, with probably the Battle series on the PSP being better. Crossfire is, in fact, possibly one of the Gundam games I disliked WORSE than Zeonic Front (the one on the Dreamcast was pretty bad, too).

I've played pretty much every gundam game they have made and I would still consider crossfire in the top 5-10. I like the PSP battle series. I especially liked Rengou vs zaft 2 and most of the seed games were decent. Its in the arcades there. I really enjoyed one year war and lost war chronicles.

True Odyssy wasn't bad either for a RPG.

Aueg vs titans was average at best. Long but average.

Federation vs. Zeon was average at best. Long but average.

Journey to Jabaro was below avg.

Dynasty warriors gundam ps3 is ok at best. Crossfire is better than that...at least you have to have some talent to beat crossfire on very hard and open up everything.

The dreamcast game was bad only because of the control scheme. If one can get past that it actually had a good plot.

I haven't played Scad Hammer or 0079 for the wii but am thinking about 0079 now that freeloader is out.

I also haven't played the trivia games like Girens greed.

Without a doubt crossfire is one of the better games since you actually have to use some strategy to beat it. Decent plot and a long game to open everything. The graphics are better than most gundam games as well. If you have any liking for ground force combat like in 8th MS team or even some of the stuff in 0083 or 0079 you'll like crossfire. Especially since its one of the few ps3 games that won't bust your wallet.

  11. If you've got the money stick with the MG kits. They are 1/100 scale which is about the size of a Yamato 1/60 Valk. Very few of the MG kits made after 1999 will disappoint...most are simply remarkable. Most have a a sub frame that is built before the outer shell is added. Many opening doors and hatches, movable eyes etc.

If your looking for small scale the HCM pro line is designed to have the detail of the MG kits but in 1/200 scale. They are small and very cool for diaramas.

The HG kits just plain suck.

There is also a 1/100 scale series that started with gundam seed that are similar to the HG series. No where near the MG kit quality. they look ok but don't have the subframe. they are a nice compliment to the MG kits since they have some that are made in MG yet.

The PG kits are incredible but there aren't a lot of them. Mega dollars.

There are also the MSIA and Fix figuration series which always seem to suffer from gasphon disease. Avoid them.

My top list for gundam shows. Haven't watched 00 yet.

    Zeta gundam

    8th MS

    0083

    MS Igloo and Apocalypse 0079

    Gundam Seed and seed destiny

    Chars counter attack

    Turn A gundam

    Gundam x

    ZZ gundam (double zeta)

    0079

    0080 (Too slow!)

    Victory gundam (can't watch it)

    Gundam wing (the horror)

    SD gundam (kids crap)

The UC timeline is probably the best but to get the most out of the later ones you really have to watch them in order by UC timeline year starting with 0079 which is worth enduring to better understand the rest of UC.

  12. has anyone played :Gundam Crossfire?

I was shocked to see that the game isn't actually that bad. It takes a while to get used to the controls but the missions are a lot like the side story game for dreamcast. If you play it on very hard its actually challenging.

Its too bad so many mags gave it poor reviews without giving it a fair shot. Definitely worth the $8 I paid on ebay to get it.

  13. So I downloaded the Aquarion PS2 game...

Holy crap is that game bad. Total waste of bandwidth and time.

Its a real shame too because it could have been such a good game. All of the elements are there in the story and action...the developers were just too lazy to do a good job.

  14. Ah. what brilliant and Witty responses you have.

Don't you Americans wear armour when you play football to prevent injury? does it have a so-so success rate or soemthing?

    Now that's funny! :lol::lol::lol:

btw LMFAO = laugh my f@#$ing A## off.

  15. Japan, Sydney, Brisbane, local posty for me. But i go wih SAL, and lately it's been averaging over 3 weeks for me...

EMS? lol no time, 1 week max.

    ---

I usually go SAL from JAPAN to Minnesota in the U.S. It usually takes about a week and a half from HLJ and a week for j-list. Playasia takes 4 days and Simplyasia takes about 2 weeks.

  16. Good point! You are absolutly right about it being a more expensive product at BBTS and getting a better price somewhere else. I mearly was just going off of the only pre-order I have seen. THANKS.

Sweet...more reissues. BANDAI's gotta release the other's this time. Bring on the ELINT<OSTRICH<VF1AMAX<VF1D<GBP<and the hik strike.

  17. I'm kinda sick of my SW collection. I gotta get around to putting everything up on ebay or sell them to BBTS's vintage dept. I've got so sick of the naboo cruiser that I gave it to my nephew the other day. Now to just get rid of the 12 boxes of sealed figures. I think as toys go sw has run its course for me. Hell I've been collecting them for 25 years. I'd rather get the better toys from japan.

  18. Going back to the HCM-Pro Interview posted by Gunota from way back in 2006:

So bigger items have been discussed, but not having seen anything in almost two years is pretty disappointing and not a good sign.... :(

Actually the destroy gundam from GSD was released. That's about the same size as psycho gundam...maybe a tad smaller but not that much. Too bad the big one's cost so much. Destroy was like $68, so I imatine that Psycho would be like $100 since it transforms. The sad thing is how the price has risen so much for the regular size ones. Akasuki from seed is like $50 on its own and its a regular size mech. They need to keep the costs of the regular size mechs down below $25. Even the EZ8 is $30. Same with the GM sniper. Bandai is starting to milk us dry.
