  1. I've even noticed that at least one thread that was critical of the movie has disappeared. I posted in the "Robotech.com" forum regarding this matter out of curiousity. I almost feel like HG might be trying to keep the negative feedback to a minimum on their site. Can't say that I blame them...

Wow, this reminds of a year or two ago when Gundam Official's message board mysteriously disapeared after people started talking about how bad Gundam Seed Destiny was.

  2. I was snooping over at the RT.com message boards to see what the reaction over there is. Ummm... The only thing I can really think of is the Star Wars Prequels apologists: as long as it carries the franchise's name, it's the greatest piece of work ever. Seriously, there are people over there saying this is really an awesome movie. Of course, there are some who are bashing it, but they're being drowned out by the "I'm loving it crowd".

HG also put up a link to a review of SC, as you can expect, it's a positive one. This guy is a game reviewer, not a movie reviewer, so take it with a grain of salt.

  3. Phew! That was one crushing review. I haven't really seen too many reviews that were down on an "anime" as what I saw on ANN.

A lot of stuff that was reviewed was already talked about here: not so good cell animation; so-so CG; sub-par acting; and what looked like, at best, a so-so story.

All in all, a terrible blow to HG, and music to a lot of our ears. :D

  4. Its a joke - Beast Machines had a heavy religious, well TF religious and spiritual theme of TFs concentrating and saying the mantra 'I am Transformed!' to transform. It's as dorky as it sounds.

I know, I was just being sarcastic. And yep, the Beast Machine "I Am Transformed" was a bit over the top.

  5. People need to get over G1.... seriously. It was cool for the time, but some of us don't want to see the same thing rehashed over and over. Plus, while I love the G1 cartoon, for the most part it was pretty stupid. The old designs would look dumb next to live actors. So if a badly animated show with no detail on the characters and several inconsistencies in both plot and mechanical design can be successful, why can't a popcorn flick by Micheal Bay be successful?

One thing I don't get though: while the producers have decided to go with different mechanical designs for the movie than G1 designs, you would think that they would go with a bunch of A-list stars to provide the voices, yet they seem to be going out of their way to get the original VA's from G1 to reprise their roles. To me, that's no really letting go of G1.

  6. I'm gonna resist conversion for as long as possible. I'm not really a videophile and I'm quite happy with the video and audio quality of DVDs.

I'm certainly not going to commit to a new system until a winner becomes clear. No more VHS/Betamax fiasco thank you very much.

And who knows, BD & HD-DVD might end up being nothing more than the 2000's equivalent of Laser Discs.

  7. I looked at that trailer. I dunno. It didn't seem as if I was previewing anything extraordinary. The human characters had all the spotlight, there was even a hint of romance between the lead? male character and a female character; yeah, just what I want to see in a TF movie. The entire trailer seemed like it was nothing more than a build up for "something big". Unfortunately, we know what that something big will be: a big special fx laden fight scene at the end. Since it seems like this movie will probably last 2½ hours, let's hope it will be more than 2 hours of setup & humans gawking at the TFs with the final half hour nothing more than a fight scene. But, with Bay's track record, I think he will stick with the standard action movie formula, and stick in his trademark "very loud" soundtrack.

  8. Oh man, does that CG look cheesy. Then again, so does the cell animation & the acting. The CG scenes just looked hard to follow: they just had too much movement. It also seemed that all the CG was just there as an attention grabber: "look at me, I'm CG". I'll probably still watch, but so far, this just doesn't seem like it was worth waiting 20 years.

Oh, and that Janice android really does look like she could dethrone Mrs. Cartman on the cover of Crack Whore Magazine.

  9. Also, I've finished "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya". After all the serious shows I was watching lately, this really was a good change of pace. A lot of comedic anime references (some I didn't get, some others I did). All in all, a good fun show.

Now, should my next show be "Martian Successor Nadesico" or "Nadia The Secret of Blue Water"? (I've decided to go with a somewhat older series)

  10. Broke down and picked up the first Patlabor movie. Trying to decide between just the movie, and the $80 version with the storyboards and whatnot kept me from buying either for ages now. I hesitate to say "not as good as I remember", because where it wasn't is only in small stylistic things. Still a fantastic movie, and I got giddy towards the end. Just well done storytelling.

Of course, now I have to get the second movie.

If only I hadn't bought the Mangled versions of the Patlabor Movies, I would have bought these so quickly. Oh well, maybe I'll just cave in and buy them anyways... someday. :)

  11. In End of the Circle, the SDF-3 is sucked into some weird alternate dimension. These "shadows" (in the book they are glowing orbs of light) abduct Valkyries and their pilots. Then, the kids on the SDF-3 start chanting for some reason... I can't even remember why. I think that the SDF-3s protoculture drives were taken from the ship. The Haydonites back in realspace are stirring up trouble and Tirol is transforming (wtf?) and going to some blackhole or something.

Then, Minmay and Zor Prime (or one of the Zor guys) are on some planet in this alternate dimension where they find the SDF-1s protoculture drives and theres these little bunny things running around.

So somehow, the SDF-3 gets back to Earth and it is happily ever after. I imagine that TSC will cover the ship's journey back home in this alternate dimension thing.

I just re-read that thing this spring and that is all that sticks out to me. As you can tell, it sucked.

Whew! I'm glad I skipped that. I had the Sentinels & EotC books at one point and just barely go through Sentinels. Before I could even force myself to start reading EotC, we had a yard sale & I decided to put them for sale. Sold the entire lot for $5. I wonder if the guy who bought them is still cursing me today? :p
