This is an ancient thread, but in case someone is still looking: I have one of these for sale.

It's shockingly difficult to find a large version of the (color) image I am thinking of. I am pretty sure the one here is also in the DYRL movie program, which I can dig out and scan it if it is helpful for you.

VF-0 work. I'm not awfully concerned about making this one perfect… rather, I'm using it to improve my skills before I build the "priceless" kits.

It is common on gunpods starting with Macross Zero, but was not depicted that way in the TV series or DYRL (no gunpod markings were ever shown on screen).

I was working on a Lancer (mine is 1/72) also during my holiday break.

The fit on the parts was not super great, but I think it will be nice when finished.

Catching up after being away for a while… I had to check back in the history of this thread because I wasn't sure this was still a paper model project!

It's really amazing, and I'd never think it was made of paper after looking at the photos.

I'm curious to know how it holds its weight and whether or not it is very fragile? I'd imagine it would be easy to accidentally buckle the shape if you held it in the wrong place. Is there a lot of internal bracing necessary?

How much does the model weigh right now? How much did the paper craft book weigh before you started the model? It would be interesting to know the ratio of paper to other materials.

Yes, it's to make it look more like the TV show. The top of page 88 says approximately:

Because this kit is the movie version of the VF-1, its nose is long compared to the TV version. In order to correct this, you need to cut the tip and adjust the shape. It's technical work, but you should try it because you can make a big impression just by adjusting the length of the nose.

Nice wheels, I agree they are an improvement.

Are you keeping track of the cost of filament and other materials?

Worked really well! Ended up with a yellow tint with a golden glint but still totally transparent!

I've added my pin. There is no way I can really keep up with this forum and I just noticed this topic. I have been a member since the old forum but only post from time to time as my interest waxes and wanes.

I first encountered Macross with the first issue of Comico "Macross" (the next issue was Robotech) and various other anime books at my local comic shop in Illinois in the '80s. I stoked my interest by ordering model kits, books, and bootleg tapes from far away… and not much has changed in, uh, over 30 years. I lived and worked in Japan for a while and have family connections there now. My sons also build models. They prefer Gundam, but they respect Macross.

Thanks. I was so eager to get some pictures up that I rushed these a little bit and I'm not super happy with the depth of field (too shallow I think). I'm really inspired by pictures like those in the VF Modeling Manual or this http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=39983&p=1076104 that look like the model is part of real life. I think with my photos above the shots from below are the ones that look the most realistic. Maybe if the weather cooperates I'll try to take a few more.

I watched the series with my 10-year old… after a few episodes he was singing the theme song around the house. Since he's used to watching better-produced shows, though, it was a little hard to hold his interest at times.

Overall we really enjoyed it and have a good memory of seeing it together, but the animation quality is so uneven. And man, Hikaru is such an idiot.

Don't worry, I made all kinds of mistakes on the battroid that I just finished, including many of the ones you mention. Also including: melting a detail part with spilled liquid glue, letting CA run up into the leg and freezing it.

But the result actually looks decent IMO. You may yet be able to make something of this test kit!

Looks like you ran out of the blue spool and moved on to black! I bet this is heavy.

Might be informative. I don't have a plain Hasegawa VF-1… only the Strike and Elintseeker.

The other modeler in my house has had a blast with C-3PO and (so far) R5-D4. They are nice kits, even if they aren't my cup of tea.

The SoftBank VF Modeling Manual shows this mod, too. But your thread is in English .

Quick response, fighter mode is really the only issue. And only non super/strike, for that matter.

Yikes, it really has been a long time since I started this project… I found out that I started this topic four years ago.

Well, I'm calling it done. Even though ideally there are a few things I'd like to refine, I'm moving on.

Here are pictures of the completed kit, warts and all. Unfortunately cracks developed in the thigh parts during assembly. They were not obvious until I did the panel lines, but I don't feel like fixing this. The close-ups make me want to drill out the head cannons. Maybe someday!

Please let me know what you think and I'd really like to hear what you think I could do better next time.

Excited to get started on this little guy. I'm happy with the quality of the kit. I'm including my Babylon 5 Thunderbolt as a fairly meaningless 1/72 scale reference.

Maybe Hasegawa feel that this is a more 'real military' TV SDF-1. *cough*

I don't mean to divert this thread but have a topcoat issue, specifically with Future. I added Tamiya Flat Base X-21 to the Future in my airbrush cup, mixed with a toothpick, and got this result today. Is this just a matter of too much flat base? What should I do to remove these spots? Some parts have been painted, some have not been painted.

Agree. I didn't comment with my picture comparison up there, but it's such an obvious mistake. Really strange…they could have at least put some kind of curve there.

I thought the gun mount shoulder things were also too low based on the elevation view that I posted, but the perspective view is more like the Hasegawa kit.
